<strong>Richard</strong> J. <strong>Murphy</strong>Memorial ScholarshipLRHS <strong>Murphy</strong> ScholarsVisionary Leader. Public Servant. Lifelong Learner.<strong>Richard</strong> J. <strong>Murphy</strong> embodied these traits as a teacher, an educator and an administrator duringthe 36 years he served the Wake County Public <strong>School</strong>s. He completed his undergraduatedegree at Campbell University where he was the first Campbell soccer player to be named tothe All America team and where he later was inducted into the Hall of Fame. With anassistantship, he completed his graduate degree at the University of North Carolina and begana career in education that would span 36 years. Mr. <strong>Murphy</strong> served as a teacher for 8 years atCarnage Junior <strong>High</strong> and Broughton <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>s; he then gained administrative experience atEast Wake and Sanderson <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>s. As the first principal of <strong>Leesville</strong> <strong>Road</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>,which opened in 1993, his visionary leadership launched a top-notch school devoted to highstandards for teachers and students, and dedicated to exemplary performance in all aspects ofcurricular and extra-curricular activities. His legacy continues to live in that institution, and<strong>Leesville</strong> <strong>Road</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> and its reputation for excellence continue to benefit the community,the teachers employed there, and students who are part of the Pride.<strong>Richard</strong> <strong>Murphy</strong> passed away in March of 2011. Family members, active and retired teachers,fellow administrators, former <strong>Leesville</strong> students and parents, and former staff members formeda committee and determined that an appropriate way to memorialize his significantcontributions to the community would be to establish an endowed scholarship. The <strong>Murphy</strong>Scholarship will recognize a <strong>Leesville</strong> <strong>Road</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> senior who embodies the highexpectations and commitment to visionary leadership, service, and lifelong learning that<strong>Richard</strong> <strong>Murphy</strong> epitomized and inspired others to achieve.Recipients of the <strong>Murphy</strong> Scholars Award will receive a $2,500 scholarship to use toward theircollege education. Interested seniors should read and complete the attached application. TheLRHS Scholarship Committee along with members of the <strong>Murphy</strong> Scholarship Committee willdetermine the recipient of this scholarship.


Scholarship RequirementsEach <strong>Murphy</strong> Scholar must have at least a weighted GPA of 3.0Each <strong>Murphy</strong> Scholar must have taken a full course load each semesterwhile in high school (Exceptions to this would be students who have a documentedmedical issue or students who had release time in order to take a class somewhere otherthan LRHS)Each <strong>Murphy</strong> Scholar must have documented, paid employment outside ofschoolEach <strong>Murphy</strong> Scholar must have contributed to the advancement of<strong>Leesville</strong> <strong>Road</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> through their significant involvement in schoolactivities. The Scholarship Committee is looking for depth of involvement,not breadth.Each <strong>Murphy</strong> Scholar must complete an essay that addresses the charactertraits that inspired the scholarship: Visionary Leader, Public Servant andLifelong Learner. (The essay should be between 500 and 750 words, double spacedwith 12 pt. type)Each <strong>Murphy</strong> Scholar must submit a reference checklist letter from anemployer that speaks to their character (form is attached)Each <strong>Murphy</strong> Scholar must provide the name of a LRHS teacher who canprovide a reference for them. (This can be a classroom teacher, coach ororganization sponsor)Each <strong>Murphy</strong> Scholar’s financial need may be considered by the ScholarshipCommittee as part of the selection processEach <strong>Murphy</strong> Scholar must provide documentation of acceptance to a fouryearcollege or university
