‘Roos Drop 1-0 decisions to IUPUI, Bradley
(Indianapolis, Ind.) – The IUPUI Jaguars scored a goal in the 83rd minute off a UMKC miscue to
steal a 1-0 win over the Kangaroos in men’s soccer action on Saturday.
IUPUI (3-7-2, 1-0-1 SL) scored the late goal thanks to a corner kick that fell to the ground off
the goalkeeper’s hands. Galen Cassady knocked in the rebound in the 83rd minute to get the
win, and keep the Jaguars undefeated against UMKC in Indianapolis since 2003.
The Kangaroos had a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal, including five shots (three on goal) by
junior forward David Sarabia. The total shot count for the game was 13-13, with each team tying
in shots in each half.
(Peoria, Ill.) – The UMKC men’s soccer team saw a penalty kick called and converted in the 84th
minute on the road by Bradley, and fell by a 1-0 score on Monday afternoon.
The Braves (8-3-2) came into the contest receiving votes in the latest top 25 poll, and generated
several chances, out-shooting the Kangaroos 25-10 overall, and 11-1 on goal. UMKC (4-6-1)
sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Corby kept it scoreless most of the night though, making a
career-high 10 saves.
The ‘Roos had a chance in the first half when freshman Julian Musa headed one off the post, but
the rebound was smothered up by BU. The Braves had some solid chances in the half repelled
by Corby, and the two squads went into the break tied.
Senior Bryan Gaul gave the ‘Roos trouble, taking six shots in the game, three of which were on
frame. He converted the penalty kick after Christian Meza was apparently fouled in the box late
in the game. It was Gaul’s team-best seventh goal.
The Kangaroos dropped to 0-6 on the road all-time to BU. It was the first meeting with the
Braves since 2007, when they fell by a 3-1 score at home.

SERIES RECORD
EIU leads 8-4-0.
LAST MEETING
UMKC won 1-0 on 10/3/10 in Kansas City
The Coaches
In his 14th season at
UMKC, Rick Benben is
the winningest coach in
school history, posting
a 104-124-25 record.
Under his guidance,
UMKC has captured four
Summit League regular
season titles and has
made three appearances in the NCAA College
Cup with the most recent appearance coming
in 2008. Benben, the fourth head coach in the
Division I era, began the 2011 season with 100
wins to his credit.
Adam Howarth is in his 12th season as
the head coach at Eastern Illinois, and has
an 85-109-21 record there. He played for
the Panthers from 1989-92, and served as
an assistant on the women’s staff prior to
becoming the head coach.
The Series
It will be the 13th meeting with Eastern
Illinois in the overall series, with the Panthers
leading 8-4. The ‘Roos won last season’s
meeting by a 1-0 score, but had not won
previous to that since 1997.
At home, the ‘Roos are 2-3 against EIU. The
last four meetings have been decided by a
goal. Benben is 1-4 vs. EIU, while Howarth is
3-1 vs. UMKC.
Scouting the Competition
The Panthers come in at 6-5-1 overall and
1-1-1 in Summit League play. They are 3-1-1
in their last five games, including wins in their
last two against Oral Roberts and Loyola (Ill.).
They are led by Jake Brillhart and Garet
Christianson with three goals apiece, while
goalkeepers Tyler Kelley and Evan Turner
have split time this season. The Panthers
have allowed 18 goals, and scored 15 on the
season. They have also out-shot the opposition
159-144.
Durwood Dominance
Since Durwood Soccer Stadium and
Recreational Field opened in 2009, the ‘Roos
have been dominant there, posting a 13-5
mark (.722).
Last season UMKC went 8-1 at home, while
going 4-2 in 2009.
A Win vs EIU Means...
- UMKC would have back-to-back wins vs.
the Panthers for the first time since 1994 and
1995.
- The Kangaroos would have two wins in
Summit League play during every season
Benben has been the coach, and the last 18
years in a row (every year UMKC has been in
the league).
Back Up Top
Junior David Sarabia hit his stride after
moving back to forward. He started the season
playing goalkeeper (where he was recruited to
play). The last two years he was an All-Summit
League forward but was moved to goalkeeper
after the graduation of Ken Cooper.
He has made an immediate impact on the
offense, scoring his sixth career game-winning
goal against MNU. He then earned Summit
League Player of the Week for scoring the
game-winner and dishing out an assist in a
victory over Oregon State.
Summit Preseason Poll
UMKC was picked to repeat as Summit
League regular season champions, along with
Oakland in the 2011 Coaches Preseason Poll.
The ‘Roos received 32 points, along with
two first place votes, while Oakland, who won
last year’s conference tournament, received
three first place nods.
This is the second consecutive year the
‘Roos have been picked to win the Summit
League by the coaches.
Championship Pedigree
The ‘Roos, who have played in the
championship game of the league tournament
in three of the last five years, have won
four Summit League regular season titles
(1999, 2001, 2003, 2010) and three league
tournament crowns (2001, 2003, 2008), all of
which led to NCAA Tournament appearances.
The ‘Roos have advanced to the Summit
League Conference Tournament in the last five
seasons, and in 12 of Benben’s 13 seasons as
the head coach (2005 was the only miss).
Overall, UMKC has advanced to 16 Summit
League Tournaments.
Slow Start, Strong Finish
The Kangaroos have had a habit of starting
seasons slow, going 0-4 to start 2011. They
have gone 4-2-1 in their last seven games
though, and have started slow when they have
had success in the past. In 2001, 2003 and
2008, all seasons that they advanced to the
NCAA Tournament, they didn’t record a win
until at least their second game.
2001 - Started: 0-1; Finished: 12-7-1
2003 - Started 0-4-1; Finished: 10-7-1
2008 - Started 0-1-1; Finished: 10-7-3

Up Next
The ‘Roos hit the road for a contest at Missouri
State in non-conference action on Tuesday at
7:00 p.m. It will be the fifth team from the
Missouri Valley that UMKC has faced this season.
Non-Con Strength
The Kangaroos are testing themselves outside of
Summit League play, and started with defending
Missouri Valley champion Creighton on August
31. They face six of the seven teams in the MVC
in Bradley, Missouri State, SIU-Edwardsville,
Drake, and Central Arkansas.
The ‘Roos also faced a Pac-12 opponent (Oregon
State), a Big 10 team (Northwestern), and a
West Coast Conference member (Gonzaga).
2011 UMKC Men’s Soccer 5
Rick Benben
The longest tenured and most successful coach in
UMKC men’s soccer history, Rick Benben is entering
his 14th season at the helm of the Kangaroos.
Under his guidance, UMKC has captured four
Summit League regular season soccer titles and has
made three appearances in the NCAA College Cup
with the most recent appearance coming in 2008.
Benben, the fourth head coach in the Division I era,
begins the 2011 season with 100 wins to his credit,
and he has had more than 78 student-athletes earn
all-league recognition and 15 players be named
to all-region squads. Post season play has been a
norm in Benben’s career, as he has guided the ‘Roos
to the league tournament in 12-of-his-13 seasons
on the sidelines.
Benben led the Kangaroos to their fourth regular
season conference championship in 2010, posting
a 10-5-3 overall record, and a 4-1-1 mark in league
play to earn Summit League Coach of the Year for
the fourth time. The ‘Roos led the conference in
both goals (1.28 pg) and goals against average
(0.80 pg). They also had the league’s Offensive
and Defensive Players of the Year in John Bayron
Sosa and Brian Quintana, respectively. UMKC also
had three players on the all-leage first team, three
on the second-team, and two on the all-newcomer
squad. Sosa also became the first ever ‘Roo to be
named first-team NSCAA All-Midwest Region.
In 2009, Benben guided the ‘Roos to a 7-10-
2 overall record and the squad advanced to The
Summit League Tournament final for the third time
in four seasons. Benben’s squad was an offensive
jugernaut, as it led the league in scoring for the
second straight season finishing with 31 goals. The
UMKC coaching veteran coached a school record
five First Team all-Summit League honorees and
had a pair of student-athletes garner major awards,
as Bryan Perez became the second straight ‘Roo
to earn Summit League Offensive Player of the
Year honor, while David Sarabia was the league’s
Newcomer of the Year. Perez was also tabbed as
SIU Edwardsville, 1973
14th Season
an NSCAA all-Region
honoree for the third
straight year - the only
player in school history
to accomplish the feat.
During the 2008
campaign, Benben
guided the ‘Roos to
10 victories, which
were the most for
the program since 2003. UMKC received national
recognition during the season, as the squad posted
a 1-0 victory at No. 3 Creighton in September. The
win helped the ‘Roos finish the year with a solid
2-1-1 record against ranked foes.
Benben coached two players to NSCAA all-Region
Second Team honors in 2008 in Brian Harris and
Perez. It was the second straight year that Perez
had garnered all-region recognition under Benben’s
watch. Harris, meanwhile, earned Summit League
praise, when he became UMKC’s first player
to garner Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Benben then led his squad to The Summit League
Tournament title - the third in school history.
Benben has claimed three Coach of the Year
honors during his 12-year tenure with the most
recent accolade coming on the heels of the 2003
campaign. The Kangaroos finished the season
with a 10-7-3 overall record (5-1-0 conference)
and an appearance in the NCAA College Cup. The
squad captured the first league “double” in school
history as they finished atop the regular season
table before capturing the conference tournament
championship.
In 2001, Benben earned the Mid-Con Coach of
the Year honors after guiding his team to the
best season in UMKC’s Division I history, putting
together a 12-7-1 overall record and winning the
first league tournament championship in school
history. With their first appearance in the NCAA
Tournament, the Blue-and-Gold picked up the only
NCAA Tournament win for any team sport, knocking
off Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the first round by a 2-1
overtime scoreline.
With his success on the field, the Kangaroos were
recognized for their achievements. Larry Scheller
was named the Mid-Con Player of the Year to go
along with honorable mention College Soccer News
all-America honors. Scheller still is the only player
in school history to receive all-America accolades.
Benben received his first Coach of the Year nod in
his second season on the sidelines for the ‘Roos
after he guided the squad to an 11-6-0 record.
Under his direction, Erik Kuster netted nine goals
to earn the Mid-Con Player of the Year accolade.
In addition to his success on the field, the ‘Roos
have been honored for their work in the classroom
under Benben’s tutelage. Garret Guthrie earned
ESPN The Magazine Third Team Academic all-
America honors and was a finalist for the Lowe’s
Senior CLASS Award, while Brian Harris was a 2008
NSCAA College Scholar all-American. In addition,
the ‘Roos have had 10 academic all-region honors
during Benben’s tenure.
In addition to his success with UMKC, Benben
has a storied soccer career. As a player at
Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, he was a three-year
letterwinner at goalkeeper, backstopping the squad
to a national championship in 1972.
Benben became an assistant coach at SIUE after
his graduation in 1973, helping to lead the team to
another national championship in 1979. In 2008,
Benben was recognized by his alma mater for his
athletic achievements, as he was selected to the
school’s Hall of Fame.
In 1982, Benben joined the professional ranks, as
he became assistant coach and director of player
personnel for the Kansas City Comets of the Major
Indoor Soccer League. He was then named head
coach of the Comets in 1984, midway through
the 1983-84 season. His squad recovered to finish
fourth in the Western Division, falling in a five-game
playoff series to the St. Louis Steamers. During
his tenure with the Comets, he missed the playoffs
just once, during the 1986-87 season, his final full
season with the team.
Since 1987, he has been the director of Rick
Benben Soccer Camps in Lenexa, Kan., helping
to educate young elite-level soccer players during
the summer. He received his bachelor’s degree
in physical education and health in 1973 and a
master’s degree in education administration and
supervision in 1976, both from SIUE.
Benben and his wife, Meg, have three children,
Matt, Rachel and Andrea, and they reside in
Lenexa, Kan.
