LAST MEETING UMKC won 1-0 on 10/3/10 in Kansas City The Coaches In his 14th season at UMKC, Rick Benben is the winningest coach in school history, posting a 104-124-25 record. Under his guidance, UMKC has captured four Summit League regular season titles and has made three appearances in the NCAA College Cup with the most recent appearance coming in 2008. Benben, the fourth head coach in the Division I era, began the 2011 season with 100 wins to his credit. Adam Howarth is in his 12th season as the head coach at Eastern Illinois, and has an 85-109-21 record there. He played for the Panthers from 1989-92, and served as an assistant on the women’s staff prior to becoming the head coach. The Series It will be the 13th meeting with Eastern Illinois in the overall series, with the Panthers leading 8-4. The ‘Roos won last season’s meeting by a 1-0 score, but had not won previous to that since 1997. At home, the ‘Roos are 2-3 against EIU. The last four meetings have been decided by a goal. Benben is 1-4 vs. EIU, while Howarth is 3-1 vs. UMKC. They are 3-1-1 in their last five games, including wins in their last two against Oral Roberts and Loyola (Ill.). They are led by Jake Brillhart and Garet Christianson with three goals apiece, while goalkeepers Tyler Kelley and Evan Turner have split time this season. The Panthers have allowed 18 goals, and scored 15 on the season. They have also out-shot the opposition 159-144. Durwood Dominance Since Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field opened in 2009, the ‘Roos have been dominant there, posting a 13-5 mark (.722). Last season UMKC went 8-1 at home, while going 4-2 in 2009. A Win vs EIU Means... - UMKC would have back-to-back wins vs. the Panthers for the first time since 1994 and 1995. - The Kangaroos would have two wins in Summit League play during every season Benben has been the coach, and the last 18 years in a row (every year UMKC has been in the league). Back Up Top Junior David Sarabia hit his stride after moving back to forward. He started the season playing goalkeeper (where he was recruited to play). The last two years he was an All-Summit League forward but was moved to goalkeeper after the graduation of Ken Cooper. He has made an immediate impact on the offense, scoring his sixth career game-winning goal against MNU. He then earned Summit League Player of the Week for scoring the game-winner and dishing out an assist in a victory over Oregon State. Summit Preseason Poll UMKC was picked to repeat as Summit League regular season champions, along with Oakland in the 2011 Coaches Preseason Poll. The ‘Roos received 32 points, along with two first place votes, while Oakland, who won last year’s conference tournament, received three first place nods. This is the second consecutive year the ‘Roos have been picked to win the Summit League by the coaches. Championship Pedigree The ‘Roos, who have played in the championship game of the league tournament in three of the last five years, have won four Summit League regular season titles (1999, 2001, 2003, 2010) and three league tournament crowns (2001, 2003, 2008), all of which led to NCAA Tournament appearances. The ‘Roos have advanced to the Summit League Conference Tournament in the last five seasons, and in 12 of Benben’s 13 seasons as the head coach (2005 was the only miss). Overall, UMKC has advanced to 16 Summit League Tournaments. Slow Start, Strong Finish The Kangaroos have had a habit of starting seasons slow, going 0-4 to start 2011. They have gone 4-2-1 in their last seven games though, and have started slow when they have had success in the past. 2011 UMKC Men’s Soccer 3 Up Next The ‘Roos hit the road for a contest at Missouri State in non-conference action on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. It will be the fifth team from the Missouri Valley that UMKC has faced this season. Non-Con Strength The Kangaroos are testing themselves outside of Summit League play, and started with defending Missouri Valley champion Creighton on August 31. They face six of the seven teams in the MVC in Bradley, Missouri State, SIU-Edwardsville, Drake, and Central Arkansas. The ‘Roos also faced a Pac-12 opponent (Oregon State), a Big 10 team (Northwestern), and a West Coast Conference member (Gonzaga).
