Threats<br />
The general c<strong>on</strong>sensus am<strong>on</strong>gst locals<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> experts is that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> populati<strong>on</strong> is decreasing<br />
at an unsustainable rate. Live<br />
animal trade, trade for parts (pelts) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
indiscriminate hunting are thought to<br />
have <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> greatest effect <strong>on</strong> populati<strong>on</strong><br />
numbers (CBSG 2000). Direct persecuti<strong>on</strong><br />
due to predator-livestock c<strong>on</strong>flicts<br />
occurs <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> local farmers <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> shepherds<br />
are also known to be <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> opini<strong>on</strong> that<br />
any predator threatening <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir livestock<br />
will be shot.<br />
Competiti<strong>on</strong> with man in early<br />
years was restricted by natural factors<br />
such as limited perennial water <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> inability<br />
to easily access wadis c<strong>on</strong>taining<br />
water. Farming was limited to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> carrying<br />
capacity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> natural envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />
Recent years have witnessed a<br />
rapid increase in development throughout<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> UAE as a result <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> new wealth<br />
generated mainly from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> discovery<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> major oil resources. C<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
new roads (Fig. 4) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> highways across<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> country <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> expansi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> many<br />
small villages scattered throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
mountains has resulted in important<br />
habitat fragmentati<strong>on</strong> for many species.<br />
Improved availability <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> resources such<br />
as pumped water has led to increased<br />
cultivati<strong>on</strong> (Fig. 5) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> overexploitati<strong>on</strong><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> limited wadi resources. Also <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
enormous impact to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> loss <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> viable<br />
habitat is extensive quarrying <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Shumayliya Mountains (Fig. 6) for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> multiple <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f-shore residential<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> pleasure isl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s al<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
UAE coastline.<br />
Hunting <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> increased livestock<br />
numbers have resulted in a decrease<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> natural prey species, such as Arabian<br />
tahr Hemitragus jayakari. During<br />
a survey c<strong>on</strong>ducted by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> BCEAW at<br />
perennial water holes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> various wadi<br />
branches in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Shumayliya Mountains<br />
(B in Fig. 1) it was c<strong>on</strong>firmed that Arabian<br />
tahr do still occur in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> regi<strong>on</strong> but<br />
in very limited numbers. The survey,<br />
which was c<strong>on</strong>ducted between June<br />
2000 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> January 2002, included camera<br />
trapping, behavioural observati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> faecal <strong>sa</strong>mple collecti<strong>on</strong>. During <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
18-m<strong>on</strong>th period <strong>on</strong>ly thirteen photographs<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> tahr were obtained (Ruddock<br />
2002, Ruddock & Smith 2002). There<br />
were five live animal sightings (Ruddock<br />
& Smith 2002) <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which was<br />
photographed (Fig. 7).<br />

remote areas (Photo J. Edm<strong>on</strong>ds).<br />
Local residents are known to have<br />
limited interest <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> awareness <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
natural history <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> UAE. A popular<br />
pastime enjoyed by both locals <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
expatriates in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> regi<strong>on</strong> is “wadi-” <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
“dune-bashing”, which requires careful<br />
attenti<strong>on</strong>. Aside from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> noise<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> disturbance <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> habitat, problems<br />
such as plant <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> animal destructi<strong>on</strong>,<br />
erosi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> polluti<strong>on</strong> have a negative<br />
impact <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se fragile habitats.<br />
Habitat<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Leopard</str<strong>on</strong>g>s have a wide habitat tolerance<br />
but are generally associated with rocky<br />
hills <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> mountainous ranges (Fig. 9 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
10; Skinner & Smi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs 1990, Harris<strong>on</strong><br />
& Bates 1991). They are <strong>sa</strong>id to seldom<br />
venture <strong>on</strong>to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> open plains (Harris<strong>on</strong><br />
& Bates 1991) however; an individual<br />
trapped in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> early 1990’s was in fact<br />
caught <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> open plains near Manama<br />
(4 in Fig. 1). <str<strong>on</strong>g>Leopard</str<strong>on</strong>g>s are believed to<br />
be absent from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> true desert <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
central Arabian peninsula (Harris<strong>on</strong> &<br />
Bates 1991).<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mountains (Photo J. Edm<strong>on</strong>ds).<br />
The Shumayliya Mountains run<br />
from north to south al<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> east coast<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> UAE, covering an approximate<br />
area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 3,200km 2 . Scrapings, tracks <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
kills have all been found in mountain<br />
wadis with permanent water (CBSG<br />
2000, R. Llewellyn-Smith, pers. comm.<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> D. Egan, pers. comm.).<br />
Not enough is known about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> habitat<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Arabian leopard to accurately<br />
identify primary or marginal habitat in<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> UAE, assessment is based <strong>on</strong> scattered<br />
reports <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> knowledge <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> leopards<br />
from o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r regi<strong>on</strong>s. It is thought that<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> UAE provides a corridor for leopards<br />
moving between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mus<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>am<br />
Peninsula <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Al Hajar Mountains<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Oman (CBSG 2000). However, it<br />
should be noted that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> leopard is c<strong>on</strong>sidered<br />
to be absent from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> massive<br />
Al Hajar Mountain range in nor<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn<br />
Oman (Spalt<strong>on</strong> et al. 2006) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> existence<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a corridor today would <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore<br />
be redundant.<br />
Whilst <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> leopard itself is <strong>sa</strong>id to be<br />
independent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> water <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> able to obtain<br />
