Stulemeijer: Provenance Research <strong>on</strong> <strong>14th</strong>-Century Greenwares Found <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore NSC Work<strong>in</strong>g Paper No. 9<br />
local manufacture, ch’ih ch<strong>in</strong> (already obsolete co<strong>in</strong>age, when Dayuan wrote<br />
his remarks), porcela<strong>in</strong> ware, ir<strong>on</strong> pots, and suchlike.<br />
These historical descripti<strong>on</strong>s are thus far the <strong>on</strong>ly direct descripti<strong>on</strong>s of the two known<br />
<strong>in</strong>habited locati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> ancient S<strong>in</strong>gapore. Both locati<strong>on</strong>s seem to have thrived <strong>on</strong> trade,<br />
either regulated or unregulated. Important is the menti<strong>on</strong> of porcela<strong>in</strong> ware be<strong>in</strong>g used <strong>in</strong><br />
trade. Greenware is <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese a porcela<strong>in</strong> ware; <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese there are <strong>on</strong>ly words for<br />
Earthenware (Taoqi 陶 器 ), and Porcela<strong>in</strong> (Ciqi 瓷 器 ). In the Modern Ch<strong>in</strong>ese language, there<br />
is another term for the modern c<strong>on</strong>cept of "st<strong>on</strong>eware" (shiqi 炻 器 ) 1 .<br />
It is unknown whether there was <strong>on</strong>e or there were several producti<strong>on</strong> centres export<strong>in</strong>g<br />
their Greenware products to S<strong>in</strong>gapore <strong>in</strong> the fourteenth <strong>century</strong>. This <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> will likely<br />
be able to identify if the Greenware objects <strong>found</strong> <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore were produced <strong>in</strong> several<br />
areas <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a or <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e. If there was <strong>on</strong>e producti<strong>on</strong> centre trad<strong>in</strong>g its wares through and<br />
<strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore, it is likely that the other products named by Wang Dayuan were also from or<br />
traded with <strong>on</strong>e area <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a.<br />
14 th -<strong>century</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore seems to have been unique <strong>in</strong> other ways <strong>in</strong> additi<strong>on</strong> to its<br />
geographical locati<strong>on</strong>. There seem to be no similar ports-of-trade <strong>in</strong> the regi<strong>on</strong> fulfill<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
same purpose as S<strong>in</strong>gapore. There were vaguely similar locati<strong>on</strong>s earlier and later but n<strong>on</strong>e<br />
at the same time as S<strong>in</strong>gapore. Kota C<strong>in</strong>a <strong>in</strong> North Sumatra played the same role around the<br />
turn of the first millennium, as did Palembang <strong>in</strong> South Sumatra, though more up river, not<br />
so near the coast <strong>in</strong> the 7 th through 12 th Century, and then later there was Malacca <strong>in</strong> the<br />
late 14 th early 15 th Century. Nor were there similar places <strong>in</strong> Vietnam, the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es, Siam<br />
(Thailand), or Majapahit (Ind<strong>on</strong>esia).<br />
For local trade, by which I mean trade with<strong>in</strong> the Southeast Asian regi<strong>on</strong>, little is known. As<br />
A. B. Lapian (1985) menti<strong>on</strong>s, the Orang Laut, though not a term preferred by these ‘people<br />
of the sea’, were an extensive group of people who lived their lives <strong>on</strong> or next to the sea.<br />
They could be <strong>found</strong> from Thailand to Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, S<strong>in</strong>gapore, Kalimantan,<br />
