Stulemeijer: Provenance Research <strong>on</strong> <strong>14th</strong>-Century Greenwares Found <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore NSC Work<strong>in</strong>g Paper No. 9<br />
1. Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />
This <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> emerged from the idea that there must be a more scientific way to assess<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>provenance</str<strong>on</strong>g> of ancient ceramics than the normal method of observati<strong>on</strong> with the naked eye<br />
employed by most experts. These thoughts developed over nearly fifteen years of object<br />
c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> work <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore and were amplified by the volunteer work I have d<strong>on</strong>e with<br />
the S<strong>in</strong>gapore Archaeological Laboratory. This <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> is meant to strengthen the<br />
knowledge of an active port-of-trade <strong>in</strong> the 14 th <strong>century</strong> <strong>on</strong> the island of S<strong>in</strong>gapore, not<br />
much different from present-day S<strong>in</strong>gapore.<br />
This <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> explores the possibilities of employ<strong>in</strong>g EDXRF (Energy-Dispersive X-ray<br />
Fluorescence Analysis) to obta<strong>in</strong> an enhanced <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to the greenware ceramic<br />
assemblage uncovered from the excavated 14 th -<strong>century</strong> layers at Empress Place and the<br />
S<strong>in</strong>gapore Cricket Club, S<strong>in</strong>gapore. The scientific test<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>ducted for this thesis is aimed<br />
to provide repeatable tests with a dataset, which can be analysed to <strong>in</strong>vestigate <str<strong>on</strong>g>provenance</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
questi<strong>on</strong>s. The 130 tests c<strong>on</strong>ducted for this <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> have been compared with each other<br />
<strong>in</strong> order to f<strong>in</strong>d comm<strong>on</strong>alities or differences <strong>in</strong> chemical f<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>ts. The 130 objects have<br />
been put <strong>in</strong> a sort<strong>in</strong>g system; though this system is subjective, no pre-test<strong>in</strong>g sort<strong>in</strong>g system<br />
has been described <strong>in</strong> previous literature <strong>on</strong> the chemical analysis of ancient Ch<strong>in</strong>ese<br />
porcela<strong>in</strong>. This sort<strong>in</strong>g system will allow us to compare the different test results with each<br />
other <strong>in</strong> unique ways. Test results show great promise when compar<strong>in</strong>g chemical elements<br />
and display<strong>in</strong>g the results <strong>in</strong> graphs. Though more <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> will be needed to draw absolute<br />
c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s, results of this <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> show that employ<strong>in</strong>g EDXRF for <str<strong>on</strong>g>provenance</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> to<br />
solve problems regard<strong>in</strong>g ancient trade <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore is a viable opti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
2. C<strong>on</strong>text of the Research<br />
In order to place this <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> with<strong>in</strong> its c<strong>on</strong>text, it is necessary to def<strong>in</strong>e its geographical<br />
locati<strong>on</strong>, chr<strong>on</strong>ological period, and scientific genre. The field of this <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> is multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary;<br />
thus, its <strong>in</strong>tellectual boundaries must be def<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>formity with the<br />
questi<strong>on</strong>s which this thesis proposes to address.<br />
