Entry Guidelines and Conditions
We are delighted to announce the first Constructing
Excellence Regional Awards Dinner showcasing
excellence and rewarding achievement within the
construction industry across Yorkshire and Humber.
The Awards are designed to celebrate the best of the
Construction Industry’s practices and practitioners in the
region and are open to everyone, large and small businesses
alike. Constructing Excellence is keen to encourage the
participation of smaller companies in the Awards. In the
interest of promoting, recognising and rewarding collaborative
working we welcome third party nomination of individuals,
teams and companies who have made notable contributions in
this area.
Being recognised by your peers for excellence in construction
will bring enormous benefits to your business, helping you to
attract new clients, cement existing relationships and raise
your staff morale. In order to be remembered and rewarded
for all your efforts you must take part in the Awards and
apply!
Winners in some categories will be automatically
entered into a National Constructing Excellence in the
Built Environment Award.
These Awards are open to all involved in creating construction
and the built environment in Yorkshire and Humber –
developers, clients, contractors, specialist and sub-contractors,
members of the design team and other consultants.
Entries will be considered by an independent panel of judges.
The Awards Dinner will be held at the Royal Armouries,
Armouries Drive, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS10 1LT on Tuesday
12 June, 2007.
The Categories
Integration and Collaborative Working
This award will be given to an organisation/project which has
introduced an integrated and collaborative way of working.
This will include large and small organisations who can clearly
demonstrate how they have implemented working practices,
methods and behaviours which encourage individuals and
organisations to work together efficiently and effectively. This
will have resulted in co-operation, collaboration and mutual
support across the organisation or project.
Integration and collaborative working may be demonstrated
through procurement, systematic project management,
integrated logistics and collaboration up and down the supply
chain.
Obvious benefits will include a less adversarial approach, but
judges will require evidence of how workforce development
has improved as a result of collaboration, in addition to the
products or services and customer satisfaction. Successful
entries will have succeeded in integrating their teams to such
a level that they appear as a single entity to the customer.
Leadership and People Development - Organisational
Don’t be afraid to take a big step… you
cannot cross a chasm in two small steps!
Lloyd George
This award will be presented in recognition of outstanding
performance by an organisation which has demonstrated
excellent leadership and commitment to people development.
The winning entry will have shown the vision to lead their
organisation or supply chain in a way which has encouraged
the delivery of real change, demonstrated a step change,
ensured long-term benefits for the organisation, workforce
and customers. The winning organisation will have Respect for
People at the heart of its culture and leadership.

Health & Safety (CDM)
The Legacy Award – Sustainability
This award will be given to an organisation who has
implemented innovations or ideas that have contributed to
improving safety and health in construction and can show
clear evidence of the improvements or where CDM duties
have been best demonstrated and complied with in the
project; namely the systematic and effective management of
hazards associated with a project. In order to be successful in
this award, the judges will be looking for evidence that best
practice has been utilised in producing a scheme where
buildability, future maintenance and final demolition have
been fully considered.
In particular the judges will assess:
• The role played by the client in setting the tone for the
project
• Collaborative working between all the parties involved
• The verification of performance through benchmarking
and third party assurance
• The effective management of health and safety hazards
and risks
• Worker involvement / engagement.
Innovation
As ‘Building’ has noted, “Sustainability covers a very wide
range of issues – the remediation of land, reducing energy or
water consumption, bio-diversity, encouraging economic
regeneration and local employment, ensuring staff are well
protected, minimising the impact construction activities have
on neighbours, the list goes on and on.”
What the judges are looking for here is a committed approach
to sustainability issues across an organisation, embracing a
number of projects and/or interventions.
The key criteria are:
• Systematic and sustained application of the set of shared
UK principles applied to construction and/or development
and/or the management of construction operations
• Clarity of thought about the impact of the total
development/construction process and subsequent use on
our grandchildrens’ grandchildren and those that follow
them. For example
- sustainable development
- sustainable construction
- developing tools and techniques to manage
significant issues.
NB: these are only examples – we welcome applications from
“outside the box” and particularly applications that bring a
range of benefits to the table.
Qualifying
This award is about getting away from the idea that we should
continue to do what we have always done, because we feel
comfortable with it. It is about developing new solutions to the
problems we encounter, achieving an innovative solution
which enhances the value of the finished product, without
increasing the risks associated with it.
The award could be for multi-organisational or multi-discipline
organisations, with the emphasis being placed on achieving
maximum benefit from a team environment.
It could also be targeted at research and development
programmes where the cost may be split between the
proposer(s) and other agencies.
The routes to the award could be through:
• Finding technical or environmental solutions
• Overcoming problems within a project or process
• The use of Information / Communication Technology
• The development of new procedures
• The development of new skills
• Research and development activities in industry or in
academia.
The industry is defined as all who commission, produce,
develop, plan, design, build, alter or maintain the built
environment.
The company/organisation or project(s) must demonstrate
improvements in line with Constructing Excellence principles
and the Rethinking Construction agenda.
• An application can be made for a project, process, a
product or a service
• Demonstrating excellence in practice; where evidence is
requested there should be a clear “audit trail” available for
qualitative and quantitative data
• Where a project or project leader is the subject, the project
should have been based in Yorkshire and Humber and you
must have the approval of the owner of the
building/project
• Where an individual, process, product or service is the
subject, the nominating organisation/divisional
office/individual should be based in Yorkshire and Humber
• All nominations and submissions should relate primarily to
work carried out between January 2006 and December
2006.

How to enter
1. Complete the entry form.
2. Prepare a 750-word statement explaining why the chosen
award should go to your nominee. Make sure your
statement answers the specific criteria set out in the
category descriptions. Please forward electronic version on
disc.
3. Each submission must contain a separate document detailing
information about the project(s) or intervention(s) focusing
on:
- The objectives
- The budget
- The planning
- Implementation
- Evaluation of the project(s) or intervention(s):
performance against budget
- Evaluation of the project(s) or intervention(s). (No
set word count).
4. Include a set of good quality photographs. You may enclose
a floor plan, site location plan and a section, but these
should be in black and white and no more than A4 size.
Digital photographs on disc would be useful.
5. Each individual entry should be placed in a box file
containing:
a. Three clear plastic wallets each containing a copy of
the entry form and 750-word summary (both
concisely and clearly completed)
b. Any support material (e.g. floor plans, section, press
cuttings, promotional literature).
6. Photocopies are acceptable.

Entry Guidelines
• All submissions must be made by 17.00 on 5 June 2007
• All entries should be enclosed in a box file
• Box files should be marked with the category name and
submitting organisation both on the spine and on the front
• If an organisation is submitting an entry for more than one
category, each category should be a complete entry and
not share any information
• The 750-word summary sheet should be on top of the
entry inside the box file
• Receipt of entries will not be acknowledged. Entries can be
hand-delivered or sent by registered post or courier
• The organisers reserve the right to reject any entry, if in
their opinion, it fails to comply with the rules.
Specific Entry Considerations
• Clients must be made aware in advance of any entries that
refer to them and the judges may require evidence of client
endorsement
• Membership of Constructing Excellence or a Constructing
Excellence Club is not a requirement of entry
• The organisers reserve the right to feature/display
submitted material in any editorial or promotional work
related to the Award scheme
• A précis of short-listed entries will feature on the
Constructing Excellence in Yorkshire and Humber website
and elsewhere. Short-listed entrants will be expected to
participate in Constructing Excellence in Yorkshire and
Humber programme of seminars and case history
presentations
• No materials will be returned
• Every project entered will be considered for demonstration
status.
Judging
• The panel of judges will consider each submission against
the category criteria
• Winners will be announced at the Constructing Excellence
Awards Dinner on Tuesday 12 June 2007
• All awards are made at the discretion of the judges and
Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber. The right
is reserved not to make awards in a particular category
• The judges reserve the right to refuse entries without
giving reasons
• The judges have authority to move entries into more
applicable categories. Their decision is final and no
correspondence will be entered into following the Awards
• Information supplied by the judges, or discussed between
the judges and entrants, will be treated in complete
confidence, and confidentiality on the part of the entrants
if requested.
