• Malaysia is <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> top 5 Asian producers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> marine finfish, producing about<br />

8,691 t<strong>on</strong>s in 2002. For some species such as groupers, many cage farmers are still<br />

dependent <strong>on</strong> wildcaught seed to stock <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir cages. Wild-caught adult fish are also<br />

used in hatcheries for spawning. The impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tsunami <strong>on</strong> this supply line for<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> marine finfish aquaculture, if any, is not known.<br />

• Immediate destructi<strong>on</strong> to mangrove swamps <strong>and</strong> forests al<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> coasts is<br />

currently not known. Slow destructi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mangrove forest could result from<br />

changes in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> soil topography compromising water run-<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fs, changes in soil<br />

salinity, etc., as a result <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tsunami. Compromised health <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mangrove<br />

ecosystem may compromise fishing returns in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> coastal areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nor<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn<br />

Malaysia.<br />
