Informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> estimated damages to fisheries, aquaculture <strong>and</strong> coastal livelihood in<br />

Nor<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn Sumatra is still very limited due to poor accessibility to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> area by fisheries<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficials. However, we know that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> province <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Aceh <strong>and</strong> Nias Isl<strong>and</strong>s in North<br />

Sumatra has been severely impacted.<br />

Early status report prior to January 5, 2005 by various senior <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficers from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> DGA<br />

Ind<strong>on</strong>esia (Mr Agus Budhiman, Director <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Seed Producti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> Ms Maya Sudjarwo,<br />

Director for Internati<strong>on</strong>al Cooperati<strong>on</strong>) provided a very brief inside into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> potential<br />

damaged caused <strong>and</strong> pledged for help in assisting creating jobs for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> victims for<br />

those who are in Nor<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn Sumatra particularly Aceh province.<br />

Mr Andy Pradjaputra (ASEAN Foundati<strong>on</strong>, Jakarta) also ascertains that ASEAN<br />

Foundati<strong>on</strong> will c<strong>on</strong>tribute to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rehabilitati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> tsunami-hit areas in whatever<br />

efforts <strong>and</strong> ways it can.<br />

<strong>Fisheries</strong><br />

Early reports suggest that in Aceh Province about 70% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> small-scale fishing fleet<br />

was destroyed (980 canoes, 50% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which were motorized. In Nias Isl<strong>and</strong>s,<br />

preliminary reports indicate that 800 fishing canoes were destroyed.<br />

<strong>Aquaculture</strong><br />

The area available for marine fish farming was almost 400 ha, mostly in Central<br />

Tapanuli <strong>and</strong> Sibolga districts (Tapian Nauli Bay). It is very likely that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

grouper farms in North Sumatra, by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> date <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tsunami, was in excess <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1,000<br />

farms, with each farm having usually 4 but up to 20 cage units.<br />

The earthquake <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Tsunami</str<strong>on</strong>g> affected vast aquaculture areas especially those located<br />

near <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> coast. These included brackishwater p<strong>on</strong>ds for fish <strong>and</strong> shrimp culture,<br />

shrimp <strong>and</strong> fish hatcheries <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Regi<strong>on</strong>al Centre for Brackishwater Culture<br />
