Regional Centre for Brakishawater Development (BBAP) in Ujung Batee - NAD The Centre, located in Aceh Besar district, is 16 km from Bandar Aceh, <strong>the</strong> capital city <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> province, reportedly 80% destroyed. The activities in <strong>the</strong> Centre were spread over 2 villages in Masjid Raya subdistrict. The facilities in Durung village covered an area <strong>of</strong> 3.55 ha. One kilometer away is Neheun village with a bigger spread <strong>of</strong> facilities i.e. 6.28 ha. The Centre’s functions were as follows: • Development <strong>of</strong> seed technology <strong>of</strong> brackishwater fish culture • Development <strong>of</strong> culture technology <strong>of</strong> brackishwater fish • Health management and environmental monitoring • Transfer <strong>of</strong> technology – training and extension - to fish farmers and to students (for hands on field training and research) • Restocking <strong>of</strong> brackish water fish To support those activities, <strong>the</strong> Centre had <strong>the</strong>se facilities: • Shrimp broodstock ponds • Milkfish and grouper broodstock ponds • Shrimp and fish hatchery • Tank for natural feed culture • Sea water reservoir • Tank for larval culture • Brackishwater ponds • Laboratory for feed • Laboratory for pest and disease • Meeting room • Staff Housing • Library • Mosque c. Private Shrimp Hatchery There were 17 private shrimp hatcheries with varying scales <strong>of</strong> production, from small- to medium. They were producing some 200 million PL a year. They have all been heavily damaged. 2. Losses estimation a. Material losses 8
Almost all o <strong>the</strong> brackishwater pond areas were destroyed as well as <strong>the</strong> support infrastructure such shrimp hatcheries and <strong>the</strong> Regional centre in Ujung Batee. These losses consist <strong>of</strong> fish and shrimp pond structures, water channels, irrigation canals, building, housing and training facilities, equipment, library collections, and o<strong>the</strong>rs. Estimate <strong>of</strong> loss based on <strong>the</strong> establishment costs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> facilities and structures destroyed is about US$ 210,835,555, which consist <strong>of</strong>: 1) Brackishwater ponds in NAD Province = US$ 202,811,782 2) Private Shrimp hatcheries = US$ 6,233,33 3) BBAP, Ujung Batee = US$ 1,790,444 Total = US$ 210,835,555 b. Losses in life The number <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tsunami</strong> victims in The Regional Centre consists <strong>of</strong> 20 people dead and 11 people missing, presumed dead. UNOSAT Satellite Images for Aquaculture Site in Aceh Satellite images obtained from UNOSAT provide a comparison <strong>of</strong> before and after tsunami in Aceh on aquaculture sites. These aquaculture sites may culture a range <strong>of</strong> marine finfish (milkfish, seabass, mullet etc.) and crustaceans (crabs, shrimps, etc.). The severity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> damages is apparent. Figure 1 shows <strong>the</strong> aquaculture areas have been totally destroyed. The aquaculture sites in Figure 2 is slightly inland compare to <strong>the</strong> area in Figure 1, <strong>the</strong> severity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> damaged is also <strong>the</strong> same.
