From the Pastor . . . . . . . .
I want to thank you for your gracious
welcome home. Over the last few weeks
you have been so warm and positive and
encouraging. You are so good to me and
my family. And you have been so for many,
many years.
I did have a long and wonderful break
on sabbatical. Full of rest, reading, good
family time and reflection. I believe that I
have settled back in well. The staff and
our officers have done great work in bringing
me back up to speed. I continue to be
amazed at how smooth and positive this
whole process has been the last few
months. God has been good to us.
In September, I will continue a series
of sermons on the epistle of James. On
September 5 Joy and I will begin teaching
a great group of youth in our Confirmation
Class during the fall months. Tim
Kubatzky and I will teach a class, “Begin
with the End in Mind,” to borrow a phrase
from the late Stephen Covey. I will talk
about the legacy we leave and important
points in planning your memorial service/
funeral. People often have questions about
these matters and I have not spoken about
these topics in several years. Tim will share
his expertise on ways that you can remember
the church in your will and with your
resources. This will be on the 2 nd at 9:40 in
the Sanctuary.
I do want to remind you that September
23 rd is the All-Church Retreat at Mo-
Ranch. About 140 of our people will attend
the weekend retreat led by former interns
Jim and Laurie Barker and coordinated by
Joy Bedford. Back home in Georgetown, I
will lead one worship service at 11 a.m.
Both our worship at home and at the retreat
will focus on the 23 rd Psalm.
Services of Wholeness start
Sept. 23 in Sanctuary
The nine Services of Wholeness for 2012-
13 begin September 23, and each bears
the name of a Biblical title of Jesus, for example,
Good Shepherd, Living Word, The
Way, Healer.
These services are an important part
of the healing ministry of our church and
other churches in Georgetown.
We find Jesus Christ present as Emmanuel,
in Communion, and in the
singing of his praises and assimilating of
his word.
Taize prayer music is performed during
the service and includes tunes with words
that are repeated in a posture of prayer.
Praying through singing has a unique way
of opening us to the presence of God.
The same leaders will continue, with
an added minister, Rev. Amy Forsythe of
First United Methodist, and a new vocal
soloist, Vicki Moffatt.
The services are held in our sanctuary
at 7:30 p.m., and are all on the 4 th Sunday
of the month except the one December 9.
Child care is provided, and we will try to
help with transportation.
Join us for a time
about who we are
as God’s people through
the stories
in the Bible.
“It’s for life!”
C H R I S T I A N E D U C A T I O N
It really is for life—growing up into a maturity
in Christ. I repeat: It really is for life.
One of my great blessings is getting to
watch the teachers plan their time with
the children, youth and adults of our
church. Just as Pastor Mike is intentional
in choosing what he will teach us through
his sermons, so are our teachers of adult
classes as they choose their topics, our
Education/Nurture Committee as its
members plan the year, our children and
youth Sunday School and Logos teachers
as they work through their curriculum,
Mrs. Kathleen and the Logos Board as they
plan their themes and games, Mrs. Suzanne
and the Childcare Team as they
think about our youngest ones…
They intentionally want to teach you,
your children and your youth how to love
and live like Jesus Christ. If you consistently
come to worship and classes that
are offered, you can’t help but grow up in
Christ.
“until we all reach unity in the faith
and in the knowledge of the Son of God
and become mature, attaining to the
whole measure of the fullness of
Christ…speaking the truth in love,
we will in all things grow up
into him who is the Head,
that is Christ.” —Ephesians 4:13, 15
WOW!! WOW!!! WOW!!
The Property Committee, Robert Bedford,
Bill Caudle and I, Joy Bedford, cannot say
thank you enough to all of our helpers over
the last month.
Faithful helpers cleaned, patched,
sanded, painted and touched up the 1 st
floor of the Education Building (seven
classrooms and that long hallway). The
faithful helpers are: Kathy Jones, Adam
Jones, Roger Taylor, Bill McKenna, Susan
Moreno, Susan and Brian Bell, Keith
Brainard, Robby and Katy Bedford, Ruth
and Jay McEntire, Bob Albers and Sam
Guardado. The Saturday that we spent the
day painting, Amy, Nolan and Allen Pratt
brought us a delicious lunch. Thank you!!
Then, on Saturday, Aug. 18, the amazing
sorter/cleaner/organizer group came
in mass: Kathy Jones, Betty Smith, Marlene
Watts, Helen Douglass, Linette and
George Harwell, Katie Bradford, Robert
and Katy Bedford, Chrissy Creech,
Cade and Noah Maidlaw, Pat Hilgeman,
Suzanne Gumpl, Sam Guardado, Sydney
Sorenson, Courtney and Sterling Root,
and Lynn Moran.
It is absolutely amazing what everyone
was able to get done working together.
In the process we had a little fun and got
to know each other a little better. I thank
each of these people from the bottom of
my heart. I cannot wait for the kids, teachers
and parents to see the amazing results.
I also want to say thank you to Katie Bradford
who spent her time finding furniture
for the Education Building 1 st floor lobby.
(And Keith for helping her pick up and
deliver.) The lobby now looks comfortable
and homey – just what we wanted.
Thank you to Mike Carson for fixing
shades and installing thresholds and door
stops!
(continued on next page)

Logos begins with “thgin sdrawkcab”
Logos is set for another action-packed semester
with great nights of fun, learning
and fellowship. We start off the month with
our Welcome Back “thgin sdrawkcab.”
That’s backward’s night for those of you
not familiar with the lingo. We will wear
our clothes backwards, eat backwards
(dessert first) and play the get-to-knowyou
game of Human Bingo.
Many of you know that Logos is our
mid-week ministry for children kindergarten
through 6 th grade. It bridges the
gap from Sunday to Sunday and serves
to build relationships with children, adults
and God.
We meet weekly on Wednesday from
4:45 - 7:15 p.m. to be in community together.
Each week we have a theme and
everyone is encouraged but not required
to come dressed for the theme. All children
participate in a worship skills class
and learn how to participate in worship
as well as how to make a “joyful noise.”
Our Logos choir will lead in worship Sunday,
September 30, at the 11 a.m. service.
Dinner time is 5:30, when we all come
Logos themes, attire and after-dinner games for September
Christian Education
(continued from previous page)
AND a big thank you to the family
who donated enough money for three
adult classes to have flat screen TVs
mounted in each of their classrooms (no
more will you have to avoid me and the
TV carts on Sunday morning as I make
them available to the different classes).
This will help the teachers—and others
who use those rooms—have all the teaching
tools they need for each class. Thank
you to Timothy Roberts who helped pick
out the TVs and cables needed to make it
all work right.
together to enjoy a family-style dinner and
game. Our wonderful dinners are prepared
by our four amazing cook teams.
These teams are made up of wonderful
volunteers, most of whom do not have
children in our program—and one made
up entirely of men!
After dinner, we break up into groups
by grade level for Bible study class. We
have several amazing volunteers who lead
these classes, and here again, most do not
have children in the program. We also
have two nights a semester called “Fifth
Wednesday Fun” and these nights are all
about building and strengthening relationships!
The nights are theme-oriented and
have ranged from “Minute to Win It,”
where the children participate in handson
challenges, to “Logos Got Talent-
Show,” where the children showcase their
talents in a safe and welcoming atmosphere.
As I have often said, “Logos is the
most fun you can have on a Wednesday
night.” If you are looking to get “hooked”
on FPC ministry this year, I encourage you
to consider Logos. —Kathleen Wenzel
of all the teachers and volunteers those
require, and all the programs and missions
to be involved with, and our wonderful
Adult Elective:
• “Begin with the End in Mind”
September 2 (one day only), Sanctuary
Dr. Michael Roberts and Tim Kubatzky
How do you want to be remembered
What will be your legacy What themes,
scriptures and hymns will help celebrate
your life at your memorial service You’ll
learn ways to plan ahead for your funeral
and the best ways to remember the
church with your resources.
• “Babylonian Exile”
September 9 - 16, Sanctuary
Sam Matthews
Last spring’s Adult Elective course on
the Babylonian exile did not get through
all the course material during the time allotted.
Join Sam as he completes the study
in two sessions. After a quick review of
last spring’s topics, the new materials and
discussions will address the conquest of
Babylon by the Persian Empire; the release
of the Israelites to return home to the land
of Judah; and attributes of Persian life and
religion that will forever change the lives
of the returnees and Judaism itself. We will
examine how the emigrant community
reinvented itself again to be the community
of the one true God.
• “Christian Faith in the Modern World”
September 30 - October 21, Sanctuary
Dr. David Jensen, Austin Seminary
This class introduces four important
modern theologians from different corners
of the world (Europe, North America and
South America). Each expressed Christian
faith in response to challenging cultural
and political situations. We will discuss
what it means to confess Christian faith
today.
September 9 - 16, Room 207
Phil Smith
This class focuses on the attributes of
God and is designed to remind us how
awesome God is and encourage us to respond
in worship and praise. Ignorance
of God’s attributes is no small thing. How
can our hearts be gripped by the glory of
God if our understanding of His character
is shallow How can our lives be transformed
by His grace if we do not grasp
both God’s wrath and his love The course
draws from the writings of John Piper and
R. C. Sproul.
September 9, Room 107
Doug and Judy Bond
• “Christian Classics”
September 16 - October 21, Room 107
Dr. Ken Peters
Each week we will read two short
prose pieces and one poem by some of
the greatest Christian devotional writers,
from the 3 rd century to the present, from
A(ugustine) to Z(inzendorf). The readings
vary in difficulty, from fairly challenging
to very easy, but discussing them will enhance
our understanding and enjoyment
of this rich heritage of our Christian faith.

Women’s Midweek Bible Study: “The Bible Jesus Read”
by Philip Yancey, September 5 - October 24
The Old Testament is not a mysterious, outdated book. It is God’s biography, the story
of His passionate encounters with His people, and the prequel to the story of Jesus. It is
also the Bible that Jesus read, used and loved.
Author Yancey challenges the perception that the New Testament is all that matters
and the Old Testament isn’t worth taking the time to read and understand. Like nothing
else, the Old Testament depicts the cries, the complaints, the deep, insistent
questionings of the heart, the stuff of life we all must contend with. With his candid,
signature style, Yancey interacts with the Old Testament from the perspective of his
own deeply personal journey. Yancey reveals how the Old Testament deals in astonishing
depth and detail with the issues that trouble us most. The Old Testament in fact
tackles what the New Testament often only skirts. But that shouldn’t surprise us. It is,
after all, the Bible Jesus read.
“The Bible Jesus Read” will give you abundant new insights into the heart of God
the Father. And as you read with a fresh eye the prayers, poems, songs and bedtime
stories that Jesus so revered, you will gain a profound new understanding of Christ.
“The more we comprehend the Old Testament,” Yancey writes, “the more we comprehend
Jesus.”
Former Romanian mission worker is PW speaker
A firsthand report on services to Romanian
orphans, supported by a Presbyterian
Women’s Birthday Offering grant,
will be given by a former PC(USA) mission
worker in Romania at the PW Fall
Gathering and Brunch on Saturday, September
29.
Rev. Mary Ferris, who has been attending
FPC, was a mission worker in Romania
from 2001 until this past February, in
partnership with New Opportunities for
Romanian Orphaned Children (NOROC).
NOROC was one of three recipients
of PW Birthday Offering grants in 2012.
The organization offers spiritual, social,
physical and emotional support of children
from racial and ethnic groups, as well
as a large Roma population, who have
been orphaned. The grant is making possible
the purchase of land and construction
of a gymnasium/activity center for the
some 400 children served by NOROC.
At NOROC, Mary helped with three
programs: Big-Hearted Grannies, which
uses retired persons to give individual attention
to three or four infants or toddlers
on a daily basis; Big-Hearted Teachers,
which depends on retired teachers and
professors to tutor students; and Big-
Hearted Friends, which develops life-skills
training and arranges transitional employment/housing
for children who are required
to leave the orphanages at age 18.
Mary holds a Master of Divinity degree
from McCormick Presbyterian Theological
Seminary, Chicago. She was ordained
a minister in 2001 at First Central Presbyterian,
Abilene, which founded NOROC
and provides the primary support for the
program. A minister member of Palo Duro
Presbytery, Mary holds a master’s degree
in Christian education, and her bachelor’s
degree in psychology is from the University
of Texas, Austin.
“SHOW ‘N SHARE”
Starting its 12th season
Each year 10 more presenters join that
wonderful fellowship of folks who have
SHARED something that “makes their
heart sing.”
On September 9, we enter into the
watercolor world as seen and painted by
Dick Beach. He comes to painting from
his college training in architecture. Back
in his days, a watercolor class was a requirement
at the University of Kansas.
Dick’s schooling was interrupted by The
Army Air Corps in WW II. He returned to
classes at war’s end. By 1950, he’d mastered
both art and architecture and won
the heart of Dottie.
Dick worked in his chosen field for 40
years and during that time the Beach
family, now with their three children,
moved with his work to Fort Worth. Actually,
their home was on Eagle Mountain
Lake. There Dick and Dottie learned to
sail. Later they moved to “Bar Harbor” in
Clear Lake and Dick combined his love
of sailing over the water with his sometimes
hobby of painting. And, voila! Seascapes
and landscapes blended into life
memories.
Come enjoy these SHARED sights as
Dick SHOWS his favorite paintings. The
conference room awaits. Come aboard any
time that morning.
Faith Village in Smithville (about 45 miles
Bastrop fire-recovery efforts. The 2011 fire
was the most destructive wildfire event in
Texas history and destroyed more than
1,600 homes in Bastrop County.
About 50% of the destroyed homes were
either uninsured or under-insured. Volunteers
time to start! If you’re interested, contact
me at philip.smith@fpcgeorgetown.org or
Whether or not you are a member of
the Music Ministry, here is some information
that you might want to know.
This fall, the Praise & Worship ensemble
will take a temporary break due
to scheduling and logistical issues that
need to be addressed. As a worshipping
congregation, we will continue to sing
Songs of Adoration in addition to the hymns
from The Presbyterian Hymnal. A variety
of musical styles will continue to be incorporated
into our worship services
through congregational singing and
through choral and instrumental music.
Three new ensembles are starting this
fall at FPC! They are:
• Sanctuary Bells—A new ensemble that
will provide handbell music at 8:30 a.m.
worship services. It is a sub-group of Jubilation
Ringers consisting of 6-8 players.
• FPC Brass—If you play a brass instrument,
you should check out the FPC Brass
ensemble! This is a group for all ages, and
though basic knowledge of your instrument
is required, all experience levels are
welcome! Rehearsals are Sunday afternoons
from 4:00 - 4:45.
• Youth Handbells—Ever wanted to ring
handbells Well, come and learn! Youth
Handbells starts this fall! This is an awesome
opportunity for 7 th - 12 th graders,
and we’ll meet Sundays at 4:45 p.m. That’s
just before SNL! Contact me for more
2012 Cantata
For this year’s cantata, I have selected a
20-minute major work by modern composer
Mark Hayes. The work is entitled
Gloria, and the text is derived from the
Latin mass. Three years ago, we presented
Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi, and that work
was sung entirely in Latin. The Mark
Hayes Gloria is exciting in many aspects,
but the text is particularly interesting.
Hayes decided to use both the Latin and
English translations of the Gloria text. By
that, I don’t mean one language can be
used in place of the other. Both languages
are used periodically throughout the work.
This is a particularly challenging piece
of music. Choir members, along with several
of the instrumentalists, have been
working individually on their parts since
the middle of May, and we will soon begin
working on the choral parts together!
The cantata will be presented this year
on December 16 th at both 8:30 and 11 a.m.
worship services. The Cantata Chorus will
again be accompanied by an orchestra
consisting of both FPC members and professional
instrumentalists. You won’t want
to miss this! More information about the
cantata will appear in a future issue of First
Word.
Thank you for your involvement and
support of the Music Ministry at FPC.
HOPE provides supplemental food for some
I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned a program
of The Caring Place called the HOPE
distribution. It delivers a supplemental
food order to those over 55 who are
homebound and meet income-eligibilty
standards. It’s supported by the Capital
Area Food Bank at no charge to The Caring
Place or the individuals receiving the
food. In August, 148 people received the
extra food. This program could use your
help as a volunteer once a month. There
are no training requirements. If you would
like to help but don’t have much free
time, this program would be a good place
to start.
Don’t forget: It’s not too late to donate
a fan! And remember the city of Georgetown
Good Neighbor fund. By adding $1
per month to your Georgetown utility bill
you will contribute to a fund that helps
people pay their utility bills. This is particularly
important in the hot weather.
Dental/hygiene donations
I am not trying to push Family Dollar store
on you, but you can buy a card of four
toothbrushes for $1 and a tube of toothpaste
for $1. When you’re in great need of
food, dental care can easily be left by the
wayside, which, of course, in the longer
term can be very expensive.
Again, thank you for all you do to help
our brothers and sisters in need.
Get ready to walk: 2012 CROP Hunger Walk
Needs for this month:
The most needed items
are, in order of importance:
cereal, toiletries
and personal care
items, boxed dinners,
canned beans (but not
green beans; for some
reason The Caring Place
gets masses of canned
beans—perhaps the
mothers of old thought
they were good for us!),
all tomato products,
and condiments such
as catsup, mustard,
mayo, etc.
The CROP Hunger Walk is here again at
First Presbyterian. Recruiting started August
26 for the October 7 walk.
This will be the 22 nd consecutive year
that our church has supported the walk.
Last year we had 87 walkers who raised
$26,674, placing FPC first in Texas and
Louisiana of all the churches that participated
in the 2011 walk.
This year our goal is for 101 FPC walkers
to be on one or more of the three San
Gabriel Park trails in Georgetown that
Sunday afternoon—making a difference
towards alleviating hunger locally and
around the world, helping fund disaster
relief programs and providing for self-help
projects and refugee resettlement programs
internationally.
You will be able to obtain CROP walker
envelopes: 1) after each Sunday worship
service from now until the day of the
walk; 2) during the week from the church
office; or 3) by contacting Joe Porch at 864-
with a pledge one or more of the
walkers.
What’s special about CROP Walks
• More than 1,600 communities have
them in the U.S. throughout the year.
• They provide an opportunity for each
of us to respond to Christ’s message to feed
His sheep and help the least of His children
in the world.
• 25% of the funds raised will remain in
Georgetown and go to The Caring Place
and Meals on Wheels.
• By providing funds for self-help projects,
people are trained and assisted to help
themselves.
• They support the work of Church
World Services (a cooperative ministry of
37 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican denominations)
in meeting human needs
and nurturing self-reliance in more than
80 countries.

support many
mission projects
to help strangers
overseas, and in
the U.S. at the
However,
before Friends in
didn’t have a
Volunteers lend a hand in members’ homes
WHEN IT COMES TO MINOR HOME REPAIRS
and maintenance, people sometimes need
a helping hand because they lack the
physical ability or skill. Climbing a ladder
to change a light bulb might not sound
challenging to some, but for a senior citizen
or a person suffering from vertigo, it
could become a daunting task. And then
there’s the cost of calling a service person
to perform a simple household job—fixing
a leaky faucet, cleaning out gutters,
changing an air conditioner filter, or replacing
batteries in a smoke detector.
FPC’s “Friends in Deed” ministry, begun
by the Mission Committee late last
year, has come to the aid of several church
members requesting help around their
homes. A group of willing, dedicated volunteers,
or “Friends,” makes the program
work.
Mike Carson and Bob Jones, unofficial
coordinators of the ministry, recently
talked about their experiences with
Friends. Mike retired more than a year ago
with a construction company specializing
in underground utility contracting, and
Bob is a retired Marine.
They worked with the Mission Committee
to get things started. Seed money
for supplies and other items to make repairs
was provided in this year’s budget.
“We tell people who receive our services
what the materials cost, and if they
wish to reimburse the church, they can.
But since the ministry has a budget, it’s
not necessary or required,” Mike said.
“Our volunteer labor is donated so there
isn’t a charge for it.”
In some cases, Friends volunteers confirm
that work recommended by a service
company or contractor is needed and
what that work might cost.
Bob said, “We have the volunteers and
capability to handle more requests for
work than we’ve been receiving.” Other
volunteers who have participated include
Jerry Fine, Bill Stump, Ray and Karen
Rayburn, Harry Wiesner and Lou Brown.
“We’ve all been called to this ministry,”
said Mike, who describes himself as
a life-long “avocational” carpenter. “We are
trying our hardest to make it work. But
we can’t do what we love to do, and what
gives us joy, unless we have recipients of
our services to share in this ministry with
us. I know there are other church members
out there who need this kind of help.
I don’t think we have begun to plumb the
depth of this need.”
Over the years, church volunteers have
done enough odd jobs in members’ homes
to know the need exists for Friends in

Deed. Pastor Roberts and the Mission
Committee agreed when the idea was presented.
Mike said he also hears feedback
from recipients of services who tell him
how much they saved by using the services
of Friends.
“Having a handyman come to your
home to change several light bulbs can
cost more than a hundred dollars,” he said.
The two Friends in Deed volunteers are
also “Friday guys” at FPC—church members
who perform a variety of both routine
and emergency repairs and
maintenance jobs around the church facility
each Friday. In a facility of more than
50,000 square feet, there’s always something
needing repair or maintenance. Having
a knowledgeable church volunteer do
these jobs saves the church money by not
having to call a local plumber, electrician
or other contractor.
Mike and Bob also have volunteered
with local charitable and nonprofit organizations,
not to mention disaster relief
efforts in Louisiana and Missouri. Last
spring the two built an outdoor bicycle
shed for The Caring Place and replaced
the floor in a room there. Through The
Caring Place, they did demolition and
other work on the Madella Hilliard Neighborhood
renovation and expansion. Also
through The Caring Place’s client services
program, the two men have done work
in clients’ homes.
Friends perform a variety of jobs
Howard and Eleanor Bond, who celebrated
their 71 st wedding anniversary in August,
are thankful for the work done in their
home. The jobs required climbing a ladder,
and Howard said, “I’m not supposed
to get up that high.” He called Cindee
Molenda in the church office, and his request
was relayed to Mike and Bob, who
volunteered to lend a hand over a couple
of days.
They replaced a socket in a kitchen
light fixture and installed a new light fixture
in a bathroom. Outside the house, the
long nails that held the gutters to the eaves
were coming loose, so Mike and Bob replaced
those nails with bolts. “They also
cleaned out all the gutters for the whole
house,” Howard said. “And that was a lot
of linear feet of gutters. We thanked them
profusely for what they did.”
Howard is being repaid for similar
work he did years ago as part of a program
started by the Men’s Christian Fellowship,
which recruited volunteers to
perform minor repairs and maintenance
in members’ homes.
Jennie Mann, whose husband passed
away last November, called the church
when she couldn’t clean a window full of
insect spray that had dripped onto the
glass inside the window screen. Ray and
Karen Rayburn went to her house and
attacked the problem, taking off the screen
and cleaning the window inside and out.
“He left me his card and told me to call if
I had anything else I needed to have done,”
Jennie said.
Jane Belford and daughter Bonnie have
sought help from Friends in Deed twice.
Both women are “challenged” heightwise.
With cathedral ceilings in their
home, changing light bulbs is a problem.
“Bill Stump came over and changed bulbs
in the laundry room, a bathroom and outside
the back patio doors,” Jane said. He
also unstopped a couple of sinks. Jane’s
husband, a retired Presbyterian minister,
passed away in 2010.
On another occasion, when Jane was
gone, Bonnie needed help storing some
15 boxes of Christmas decorations in the
attic, so Bob went to her rescue. Tim
Smith, a neighbor and FPC member, had
also helped with the boxes in the past.
Other examples of jobs performed by
Friends in Deed are:
• Putting in a new support or pillar for a
member’s carport
• Confirming what a member had been
told about the need for insulation in her
attic
• Building a wheelchair-accessible ramp
to enter a home
• Helping a member take clothes down
from closets with a high bar so she could
discard some after moving to a small
apartment
• Adjusting the heads on a sprinkler system
• Grouting cracks in the sidewalk at the
home of a member who uses a walker
Stephen Ministry training
begins Sept. 10 at FUMC
A new Stephen Ministry training class begins
Monday, September 10, at 7 p.m. at
First United Methodist and continues
through February 2013. The 50 hours of
training is broken down into 20 2½ hour
sessions held on Monday evenings. The
training combines sound theological principles
with contemporary psychology. The
skills our Stephen Ministers learn and
practice prepare them to provide a high
level of Christian caregiving. The training
is intense since it explores serious life issues,
but it is also a time of spiritual renewal
for the trainees.
Among the training topics are: feelings
(yours, mine and ours); the art of listening;
distinctively Christian caring; confidentiality;
ministering to the grieving; and
caring for people before, during and after
hospitalization.
About the training, Melissa Pilcher
said, “I expected to learn a lot about
caregiving but did not anticipate the personal
and spiritual growth I experienced.”
First Presbyterian Youth are back in action,
and while we have many events and
activities that we have done before, this
year we’re trying it with a baby! So far,
Lily has been okay during office hours,
and she even got to attend a few Wednesday
Night Lives this summer. I think
church work suits her as she seems to
draw people with her baby charisma!
New small group format
Other changes for the fall include a new
approach to Wednesday night Bible study.
We will try a small group format where
all youth enjoy dinner at 5:45, gather for a
few announcements and prayer at 6:30,
and then head to small groups for Bible
study and discussion until 7:30. We have
recruited some quality adults to help lead
groups. As of press time, our small group
leaders are David Lee Hulsey, Leann
Y O U T H M I N I S T R Y
Hutton, Debbie Saddington and Tim Taylor.
We are working to recruit one more
person to help if needed! Pray that this
new direction will be a blessing to all!
In our youth Bible study, we will begin
with a six-session study of the book of
Acts in order to dig into what it means to
be a part of the body of Christ. We will
work to live out this mission by serving
both our church and community. You will
see youth serve as ushers and greeters on
some Sunday mornings at the 11 a.m. service.
We will help with one of the cemetery
work days, and we would like to
plug in with the Boy’s and Girl’s Club on a
Wednesday evening.
David Lee and I are ready for a great
semester and excited to see the FPC youth
and friends at church, Sunday Night Live
and Wednesday Bible studies!
