e<strong>in</strong>force the <strong>in</strong>terventions provided to the girls. A key aspect of approach<strong>in</strong>g mothers for<br />

participation <strong>in</strong> the programme is appeal<strong>in</strong>g to them <strong>in</strong> terms of their roles as women. As<br />

part of the programm<strong>in</strong>g for mothers, staff work with the group <strong>in</strong> order to build on the idea<br />

of adult women as role models for young girls. The project aims to provide mothers with the<br />

skills, self-knowledge, and confidence to be a confidant and direct source of reproductive<br />

<strong>health</strong> and developmental <strong>in</strong>formation to their daughters. They encourage the mothers who<br />

participate <strong>in</strong> the project to act as promoters, help<strong>in</strong>g their sisters, grandmothers, aunts<br />

and neighbours create positive role models for girls. The results <strong>in</strong>clude the creation of a<br />

network of alternative communication channels for their daughters.<br />

This message is re<strong>in</strong>forced by a media-based communication strategy. Project staff work<br />

with a weekly television series (soap opera) called Sexto Sentido, to develop a 13 yearold<br />

character called Claudia and her family. Thirty episodes of the show have conta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

key project themes. As part of the script development, a scriptwriter met with girls and<br />

facilitators to discuss a selected theme or situation (related to the project). The series<br />

provides role models for different k<strong>in</strong>ds of mother-daughter relationships and raises<br />

awareness among the project mothers and other adults about the difficulties faced by<br />

young adolescent girls.<br />

5Provision and protection<br />

Parents cannot meet all the needs of a grow<strong>in</strong>g adolescent. Sometimes, especially <strong>in</strong><br />

the develop<strong>in</strong>g world, they cannot even provide the basic nutrition, shelter, cloth<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

education and <strong>health</strong> care, or at least do<strong>in</strong>g so is often a daunt<strong>in</strong>g challenge. Whatever<br />

their circumstances, <strong>parents</strong> cannot provide all the mentor<strong>in</strong>g, guidance, opportunities<br />

for education, employment and life experience that fosters full maturity. Parents play an<br />

important role <strong>in</strong> assist<strong>in</strong>g adolescents to access other resources <strong>in</strong> the community, outside<br />

the family unit.<br />

The provision and protection role of parent<strong>in</strong>g refers to <strong>parents</strong>’ provision of the resources<br />

that they can, and seek<strong>in</strong>g out resources when they cannot. It entails efforts by <strong>parents</strong> to<br />

seek out relationships and opportunities with<strong>in</strong> the community that can supplement what<br />

the family is able to provide. New research <strong>in</strong>dicates that adolescents from develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>countries</strong> associate this parental role with be<strong>in</strong>g loved. 49 Examples <strong>in</strong>clude participat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> school functions, and identify<strong>in</strong>g opportunities for their adolescent to develop the<br />
