OUR MISSION 

At Westchester Land Trust, our mission 

is clear and simple: We preserve land in partnership 

with private property owners. We help communities 

create new parks and preserves. And we work to foster 

sound land use planning. 

We think our accomplishments show that we've been true to 

our mission. 

From our founding in 1988, we have protected 4,464 acres in 25 communities 

- 2,825 acres in conservation easements, 1,123 acres in new 

public parks and preserves, and 516 acres in preserves that we own. 

We've highlighted some of our 2006 successes in this annual 

report, and illustrated them with photographs by Christian

OUR DONORS 

The breadth of support Westchester Land 

Trust receives from the community leaves us speechless. 

In 2006, we worked with at least 26 different partners 

on land protection projects - partners who put untold 

amounts of time, energy, and money into projects as 

small as one acre and as big as 654 acres. 

In 2006, financial support came from more than 900 donors, in 

amounts both large and small. All told 930 acres are now forever 

green thanks to their efforts. 

It's worth saying again: without such support, we would 

accomplish little. 

Our land preservation partners are listed on page 21 and we 

recognize our financial supporters on pages 24-27. 

But our "Thanks!" begin here.

Land Acquisition 

Westchester Land Trust is not generally considered 

an urban organization, and Westchester County is not typically 

thought of as farming country. But an important addition to 

a park in New Rochelle and a state-funded agreement to keep a 

family farm in Yorktown and Cortlandt operating were among 

our biggest land acquisition achievements of 2006. 

Add to those preservation projects the Angle Fly Preserve in 

Somers and smaller acquisitions in Lewisboro and Cortlandt, and 

2006 was the year in which we acquired the largest number of 

acres in the most diverse locales. Next steps: help Somers, 

Westchester Land Trust’s 

goal is to protect a total 

of 5,000 acres by 2008, our 

twentieth anniversary year. 

Lewisboro, and other towns create management plans for all these 

new preserves. 

In New Rochelle, WLT worked with residents and city officials 

to help buy an acre of woods to add to Glenwood Lake Park. 

We're firm believers that for Westchester's cities to remain attrac-

tive, they need vibrant and welcoming parks to balance new development. 

There's no better example of how important green space can 

be than Glenwood Lake Park, which we've now helped expand twice. 

Further north, we worked with officials from Westchester 

County, New York State, the Watershed Agricultural Council, and 

Yorktown and Cortlandt to secure $2.7 million in state funding to 

protect Hemlock Hill Farm. The 116-acre farm, which spans the 

Yorktown-Cortlandt border just north of the Croton Reservoir, has 

been in the DeMaria family for years and, as part of the preservation 

deal - the first of its kind in Westchester - the DeMarias promised 

to continue to farm the land. 

It's a stunning locale that easily could have been 

the site of a housing development. Instead it will 

help keep Westchester's rural heritage alive.

Conservation 

Easements 

Preserving community character isn't everything, but it 

counts for a lot, particularly when the characteristics we're protecting 

include wetlands that are part of a public water supply watershed, 

woods and fields that are home to a diversity of plants and animals, 

and views that make passers-by look twice. 

When Peter and Janet Harckham donated a conservation easement 

on five acres they own on Mount Holly, in Bedford, we accomplished 

all three objectives. 

Mount Holly is one of the older, historic areas of Bedford, Katonah 

and Lewisboro. It's a neighborhood of dirt roads that wind through

the woods, of fields and century-and-a-half-old houses. 

Westchester Land Trust now holds eight conservation easements, 

protecting, 92 acres, in the Mount Holly area, and three other nature 

private hands.

preserves protect an additional 540 acres. There's more to accomplish 

on Mount Holly, of course, but the Harckham easement is a small but 

important part of that larger whole. 

Further south, the easement that Kenneth Heller donated in Rye 

Brook protects 2.5 acres on Blind Brook, a tributary of Long Island 

Sound. Stormwater-borne pollutants are serious problems in the 

Sound and its harbors, and in an area like Rye Brook, where houses 

on half-acre lots are the rule, every piece of protected land makes a 

difference. 

At 2.5 acres, the Heller property thus became one of our top 2006 

easements, and Rye Brook became the 25th community in which we 

had protected land.

We have conservation easements that protect water 

quality, easements that protect wildlife habitat, easements that 

provide access to trails. But we think it's just plain cool to have a 

conservation easement that does nothing more - or less - than protect 

the character of Pocantico Hills, one of those timeless places of 

white clapboard and quiet streets that connects you to the past. 

Pocantico Village Green is just an acre in size, and it's not exactly 

wildlife habitat. But the Laurance Rockefeller Trust donated it 

with the idea that if the Green were allowed to change, Pocantico

the area would be different, and not better. 

But with the donation of the Pocantico Village Green conservation

In Somers, Jim Zappi donated an 80-acre easement as part of his 

Meadow Ridge development. Planned in conjunction 

with the Town of Somers, it protects a watershed area 

and sets aside room for recreation in an innovative 

subdivision.

Habitat Protection 

When we tell people we're conducting a research 

project at a calcareous fen, we tend to get blank stares in response.

While biological research is not the biggest part of our portfolio, 

the opportunity in Pound Ridge was too good to ignore and fit 

well within the land use part of our mission. 

We had special funding, willing landowners, the scientific staff 

to oversee the work, and the calcareous fen.

understatement. They are, in fact, considered globally rare. 

Using money left to us by the late Shelly Satin and Joan 

Throckmorton, who lived in Pound Ridge, we hired Jason Tesauro, 

a top researcher, and studied the fen for a month. 

Tesauro's work confirmed what we suspected: the fen, which 

covers more than eight acres, is an extraordinary habitat. We 

found numerous juvenile spotted turtles and rare plants such as 

grass of Parnassus, fringed gentian, and sundews. 

We'll be returning to the fen to work on a plan to manage 

and protect it. And we'll continue to work elsewhere in 

Westchester on habitat protection and land use reforms, to 

help ensure that our best lands are protected and our buildable 

lands are developed in the best ways.

THE CAMPAIGN FOR 

WESTCHESTER LAND 

TRUST 

To be sure we'll stand the test 

of time, Westchester Land Trust 

needs to secure enough funds to 

consistently monitor and maintain 

the land we protect. We 

also need to raise working capital, 

today, to support the 

increasing number of new land 

acquisition projects being proposed 

throughout Westchester. 

So, in June 2005, we began the 

first phase of our Capital/ 

Endowment Drive - the $8 million 

Campaign for Westchester 

Land Trust. Included in this 

campaign is a $3 million dollar 

Preservation Fund for acquisition 

projects.

CHRISTIAN HARDER 

Christian acquired his love for photography 

while exploring the environments of his home state of New 

York and his adopted state of Rhode Island. He took the 

photographs in this Annual Report with a Holga camera, 

an inexpensive, plastic, medium-format, pinhole camera. 

The Holga uses a single plastic, convex lens with a 60-millimeter 

focal length. The lens presents a fish-eyed, soft focused take on the 

subject matter. The Holga can capture multiple exposures because 

the film advance is manual (rather than linked to the shutter button). 

Christian says, "It is this characteristic that attracts me. I work with 

a technique that allows me to create panoramic images by overlapping 

frames. I create a shorter picture by overlapping two or three 

frames, or a very exaggerated picture by overlapping all 16 of the 

roll's frames."
