Καλά Χριστούγεννα, και Ευτυχές το Νέο Έτος
CHAPTERNews
Let us be thankful to God for all the blessings He has given us, and be thankful for our burdens are always lighter than those of our neighbors. It is
also always good, in this hurried world of today, to stop every so often and take a look back to the events that have brought in our life happiness and
sadness, to activities who were successful and gave us the strength to continue the struggle towards family and individual excellence, and to friends
and brothers who are not any longer with us, and yet who are always in our minds.
September 15, 2012, was such a day, and as a matter of fact, it was a double-header day of events for our Chapter. After much planning for almost
a year, and much brotherly discussion weighing success versus failure, the Basile show went on with much success, thanks to the hard work of our
President, Manny Kanas and his Lodge officers.
Over 250 persons gathered at the Holy Trinity Hellenic Center to enjoy a wonderful dinner and laugh at Basile’s hilarious antics. One half of the
net proceeds of the event were offered to support the work of our church, in Wilmington, the Holy Trinity.
The same morning began the preparations for the 6th annual 5K Olympic Run, which for the past two years has been dedicated to the revival of
the ancient Nemean Games. Over 300 runners of all ages, 80 to 8 years old, took part in the competition which is characterized by “Amilla”, the
ancient Greek word which means striving for excellence motivated by noble means.
After the game, came the recognition of those who had excelled in the run, and who
were honored with trophies and medals. I must add here, that in the ancient times,
winners of the Nemean Games were honored with a crown made of wild celery.
In the aftermath, everyone was invited to partake of Greek food, fruit and refreshments,
an excellent selection, all very generously provided by Bro. Dimitri Halakos. The
proceeds from this event, as always, were offered to support the progress of our Odyssey
Charter School.
I believe when it comes to generosity, my brother Ahepans are one of the most
sensitive groups. Their support of philanthropic, charitable, and education causes is
unparalleled. Some of the major contributions made this year are:
$65,000 to Odyssey Charter School (to forgive the school’s start-up loan)
$6,000 to Holy Trinity Greek School
$3,500 to Holy Trinity Operating expenses
$1,000 to Ahepa Foundation Inc. (earmarked for Greece Humanitarian Relief Effort
$1,900 to Ahepa Cancer Research Foundation
$360 to Holy Trinity for AHEPA memorial brick
And many, many more smaller, but numerous contributions to worthy causes.
