M ESSAGE FROM THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD
In the few weeks since my term as president of the CBS
board began, I’ve been thinking about connectedness. As
a synagogue community, we have a lot going on. From
classes to services, school and committees, Beth Shalom
is an active place. Our Mitzvah Corps supports us in times
of joy and need. The volunteers who planted our garden
bring fresh produce to our communal tables for Shabbat
kiddush. But how many of us feel truly connected to one
another
My goal for this year is to increase that sense of
connection to Beth Shalom for our members. By building
one-to-one and one-to-many relationships and by increasing
networking opportunities, I hope we will be able
to build stronger friendships and relationships with one
another.
and still feel less connected to shul in a deep, meaningful
way.
Board members Rhona Feldman and Neelz Gharavi will
co-chair The Kesher Project: Connecting Beth Shalom.
You’ll hear and read more about it in the coming weeks.
Please take a moment to answer the question they’ve
posed to all of us on the back of our Yom Kippur tickets:
How connected do you feel to other members of Beth
Shalom
I wish us all a sweet, healthy new year and that we will
be sealed in the book of life,
I try not to confuse activity with feeling connected. A
person could be a regular at Shabbat services every week
or participate in one of our many educational programs
Jill Cohen
M ORE ABOUT THE KESHER PROJECT: CONNECTING BETH SHALOM
The goal of this project - named using the Hebrew word
kesher, meaning "connection" - is to help more Beth
Shalom members connect to each other in new and
meaningful ways. We've asked you to answer a question
on the back of your pink High Holiday ticket and drop
your ticket into one of the Kesher Project boxes at shul
on Yom Kippur. We intend to contact everyone who
responds and use their candid feedback to help interested
members improve their connections with other
members. We plan to create a variety of opportunities,
including new and existing programs at Beth Shalom, for
members to meet other members with similar interests.
Of course, we will respect the confidentiality of every
response.
If you have any questions, please contact Neelz Gharavi
at mdragonsinger@yahoo.com (206-334-7408) or Rhona
Feldman at rhonaf@comcast.com (206-355-7369) for
more information.
M IDDAH OF THE MONTH FOR AUGUST — NEDIVUT (GENEROSITY)
נְדִיבוּת
The generous heart gives freely.
Jewish tradition distinguishes between two types of
generosity. The first is giving that comes because your
heart is so moved that your hand rushes to dig into your
pocket to give, without even the flicker of a thought. In
the Torah, this generosity is called t’rumah, which means
“gift.” Generosity of this sort comes neither from
obligation nor rational thought nor guilt but out of an
irresistible feeling that stirs deep within. The other kind of
generosity, called tzedakah, is obligated giving, such as
tithing, charity and other acts that come from
commitment, whether or not the heart is moved to act in
that way. We’ll see, though, that these two forms of
generosity are not quite as distinct as we might suppose.
The human heart is naturally inclined to give. Caring
comes easily to that organ, but it is able to act on that
inclination only when it is open. That isn’t always the
heart’s condition. When our hearts are closed or walled
off, we are suffering from a spiritual ailment that the
Mussar teachers call timtum ha’lev, meaning a blocked or
barricaded heart—literally, a stopped up heart. Instead of
being open, flowing, and generous, we are sluggish,
constipated, and unwilling at our core.
Are you aware that blockages obstruct your heart One
Mussar approach to changing the condition of your heart
is to take on commitments to certain behaviors.
To develop a generous heart, you might commit to
tithing, regular charitable donations or other forms of
tzedakah, for we learn that “the heart follows the deed.”
Systematic giving can soften a hardened heart.
Because we live in a money-centric culture, we tend to
think of generosity only as acts that involve reaching into
our wallets. But as with all soul traits, generosity is a
quality of the soul and so it can find expression in many
ways. You can be generous with money but also with
your time, your energy, and your possessions.
Youth Updates
F ROM THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION: IRIT ELIAV
Looking back in time to September 1, 2000….
After graduating from college in Florida, I had moved to
Seattle just a couple of months earlier. I was about to
begin a Masters in Social Work program at the University
of Washington. And, it was my first day as an employee
at Beth Shalom.
It’s amazing how much has changed since then.
The world was a very different place. We had not yet
experienced the horrors of September 11th. We were not
fighting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Bill Clinton was
president. No one could imagine that the leading
Democratic Presidential candidates could be a woman and
an African-American man.
I was in a very different place. At 22, I was just
beginning my career. I had not yet purchased my first
home or held my first full-time job. I had almost no
friends yet in Seattle. This was not yet my home, not
really.
Beth Shalom was a very different place. Rabbi Borodin
had not yet joined our congregation. We did not yet own
the house next door. Our Early Childhood Center wasn’t
something we had even dreamed of creating. Matanot
and Chaverim (our youngest youth groups) did not yet
exist.
On September 1, 2000, I thought I was beginning a
small, part-time job that would give me a little spending
money while I was in graduate school. Looking back on
the last ten years, I am amazed at the tremendous role
Beth Shalom now plays in my life.
Beyond the fact that I work here every day, I also view
Beth Shalom as my second family. When people ask me if
I have children, my response is usually “Yes, about 300
of them, and I love them all.” When I think of the people
who have been mentors and role models in my life, I
often am thinking of Beth Shalom members. When I look
back on some of my moments of greatest sadness and
deepest joy, they are also connected to Beth Shalom.
Ten years is a long time and it has also flown by faster
than I can believe. I am so honored to have grown and
changed here and to have been a part of growing and
changing our congregation. I feel blessed and honored
every day to be a member of this sacred community.
Thank you all for an incredible ten years. I look forward
to being a part of this community for many years to
come.
Y OUTH ACTIVITIES, CONTACT: IRIT ELIAV
Some people wonder why the youth group programming
we do here at Beth Shalom is so important. How much
value can there be in going roller skating and eating ice
cream
Actually, far more than you can imagine. Study after
study cites participation in informal Jewish education (like
youth groups and summer camps) as a primary shaper of
Jewish identity. I personally believe that I live a
meaningful Jewish life, including choosing a career in
Jewish education, as a direct result of my involvement in
Kadima and USY. I also learned tremendous amounts
about leadership, teams, and myself in the process.
We are lucky at Beth Shalom to have thriving, active,
youth programming with dedicated, committed advisors.
If you have not yet encouraged your child(ren) to get
involved, please do. It is a decision that they will one day
thank you for making.
We currently offer four different youth groups:
Matanot – 2 nd and 3 rd graders
Chaverim – 4th and 5 th graders
Kadima – 6 th – 8 th graders
USY – 9 th – 12 th graders
These all offer wonderful opportunities to spend time with
friends both new and old, try new things, and have
positive Jewish experiences! Youth Department calendar
for the year will be released around the high holidays. If
you’d like to get more involved, please contact Irit Eliav,
Family, Youth and Child Programs
In response to feedback from congregants, we have greatly expanded our programs for families, youth and
children. All programs take place at Beth Shalom or neighboring buildings. We have taken much care in
crafting quality programs for all age groups and to that end, greatly appreciate your help in ushering your
children into an age appropriate option. We recognize that families may have children in different age
groups and deciding what program to attend may be a challenge. Family Services may be a good option for
children who wish to stay with their parents. Should you have any questions as to which program is best
for your family or child, please feel to call Irit Eliav, Director of Education at 206-524-0075. If you would
like to volunteer to help with any of these programs, we’d be thrilled to have your help. Call and let us
