Middah of the Month: Silence - Shtikah<br />
with Rabbi Harry Zeitlin and Shirah Bell from 1:15pm in the Beit Midrash<br />
The central statement of faith in Judaism is the Sh’ma, which reads: “Hear Israel, the<br />
Lord your God, the Lord is One.” Only in silence is it possible to hear. Two aspects of<br />
silence are explored in Mussar—restraint in speaking with others and contemplative quiet.<br />
The interpersonal dimension of silence gets more attention. In the Tanach we are told<br />
that a wise person is one who knows what to say and when to say it but also<br />
knows when to keep silent. (Proverbs <strong>17</strong>:28).<br />

Come Leyn Torah on Weekdays or JUST COME<br />
The daily minyan at <strong>Beth</strong> <strong>Shalom</strong> is looking for volunteer<br />
leyners and people to make minyan. Whether you are<br />
dusting off your leyning skills or giving it a first try, you<br />
could not find a more supportive and appreciative group.<br />
We read the torah every Monday and Thursday, plus Rosh<br />
Chodesh and the like. Services start at 7:00 am and are<br />

We are looking forward to creating a new holiday planning<br />
committee this year that will work with the rabbi and<br />
program director helping to dream, plan, and implement<br />
our synagogue holiday programs. If you are someone who<br />
has ideas for celebrating the holidays, or likes to work on<br />
details, or happy to help out at the holiday celebrations<br />
themselves - we would love to have you for this exciting<br />

For the sixth year in a row, we look forward to producing<br />
our own original book of prayers, poems and reflections<br />
written for the high holidays. We would love to include<br />

office by <strong>Aug</strong>ust 31. This book of prayers and poems has<br />
been an important source of inspiration during the<br />

Sheldon Lewis was born in Chicago and educated at the<br />
University of Chicago and the Jewish Theological<br />
Seminary in New York City, where he received his<br />
rabbinic ordination. He is rabbi emeritus of<br />
<strong>Congregation</strong> Kol Emeth in Palo Alto, which he served<br />
for thirty-three years. Rabbi Lewis has always tried to<br />
promote peace and understanding in his community,<br />
within families, between varying streams in Judaism,<br />
and among religious faiths. He has been deeply<br />
engaged as well in nurturing peace between nations, in<br />
the Middle East and beyond.<br />

Yiscah has just returned from Israel and is eager to<br />
share her deep knowledge of Hebrew prayers. This<br />
pre-holiday class will focus on the tefillot, prayers, of<br />
the High Holiday Machzor, offering both literal and<br />
theological ways to understand the prayers. This class<br />
will help you understand what you’re saying when<br />
davening in Hebrew. Students should have a basic<br />
knowledge of Hebrew grammar and vocabulary.<br />

commentary of Me’am Loez to help us understand the<br />
