(Continued from page 1)Message from the Rabbi continuedincluding shelter, clothing, food, sexual intimacy and amonetary sum (called the ketubah) in case of his deathor divorce. In an earlier age, this relationship wasconsidered ahead of its time in its protection of thewoman. Today, many of us wrestle with sanctifying ourpartnerships under the traditional paradigm of marriage– be it the inequalities between the genders, or that thisformat is based on it being a straight partnership, or thatit reflects a understanding of marriage which is not ourcontemporary reality. Today, some couples and rabbisare looking for other models including looking at historicJewish business partnerships as another possibleparadigm for the partnership of marriage, and others aretrying to find a way to make the acquisition model be amutual one, rather than a one-sided one, and others aresuggesting new models altogether or new metaphors forunderstanding the classic model of kinyan. We live in atime of ritual fluidity, and our movement has not yetcoalesced into a standard universal egalitarian ceremonywith a number of different models and variations beingused. Also in play is how different metaphors and ritualsintroduced with the intent of sanctifying same sexrelationships are influencing the sanctification of straightrelationships. My wedding ceremony is still a work in progress as Icontinue to talk with colleagues and research the historyand evolution of the Jewish wedding ceremony andcontemporary alternatives that are being used. It hasbeen fascinating learning what pieces colleagues havewrestled with and their alternatives and adaptations. This research process has been helpful for me inreexamining my views on halachic and ritual change andthe relationship between symbolism and practice. On thepractical side, I have figured out some of the pieces ofour ceremony, and others remain a work in progress. And most of all, I look forward to the sharing with youmy thinking on the subject as it is put into practice at ourwedding on June 16th.Dues Agreements & Religious School Packets! - Your 2013/2014 dues agreements andReligious School packets should be arriving in your homes shortly. Yasher koach to all who were able to donate! This year, we count the ‘omer’ throughout April and intoMay. Traditionally, this has marked the period betweenPesach and Shavuot, and while Shavuot marks the givingof the Torah at Mt. Sinai, it was also the first dayindividuals could bring the Bikkurim (first fruits) to theTemple. Between the Pesach seder meal and thebikkurim, we should always be reminded of those whoare underfed and rely on The Jewish Family Service FoodBank for assistance in our community. April also marksseveral observances: Yom Hashoah, Yom Hazikaron, andYom Ha’Atzmaut. Although the Social Action Committeeis usually focused on issues closer to home, we want tobring your attention to a charity in Israel mentioned byDanny Siegel. Many of you know Danny, who has beendoing Mitzvah and Tikun Olam work for 40 years. TheRabbanit Kapach, now 90, has been helping families inIsrael with Passover food and other food needs for 50years and relies primarily on individual donations. If youwould like to help the Rabbanit, checks can be made to:Jewish Helping Hands; c/o Rabbi Joel Soffin; 304 W 89thSt; NY, NY 10024.Please indicate that you recommend that the donation beused for the Rabbanit Kapach’s needs.IMPORTANT UPDATE: The Habitat for HumanityInterfaith Build scheduled for April 28th, had to bechanged due to a scheduling conflict. Youth UpdatesF R O M TH E D I R E C T O R OF E D U C A TI ON: I R I T E L I A V“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember.Involve me and I learn.” – Benjamin FranklinWe have incredible educators in the Beth ShalomReligious School. Yet, what happens in the classroom isonly a small part of the education that happens here.We regularly speak to the students about various waysto do mitzvot and g’millut hassadim, acts of lovingkindness. We have often talked and learned about themitzvah of bikkur holim, visiting the sick, and themitzvah of honoring our elders. The kids have alwaysunderstood why these mitzvot are important in theory. One of our primary goals at CBS is to help Judaismcome to life for our students. In March, we helped thathappen with a wonderful Sunday morning field trip. Onour field trip, we went to The Summit at First Hill, aJewish retirement and assisted living facility. While wewere there, we sang Passover songs (both traditionaland silly) for the residents, shared some cookies withthem, and played a few lively games of Bingo! Withinmoments, the residents clearly fell in love with our kids.So many residents pulled me aside and said things like“these children are lovely and so well behaved!” Severalothers asked me, “which one is yours?” and I smiled asI replied that “they are all mine, they are my students.”Watching our students interact with our residents therewas truly inspirational. They were kind, thoughtful, friendly, and very loving. They were modeling all of thebehaviors and values that we have tried so hard toteach them. And this trip reinforced the lesson BenjaminFranklin was teaching above. We have told the kidsabout these mitzvot and have taught them the meaningand lessons behind them. But until we involved them inactually doing the mitzvot, they hadn’t truly learnedthem. Now they have. And, they will likely continue tolook for ways to continue to fulfill these mitzvot. The same can be said about any of the lessons we wantto teach our kids. Another incredible way to fully involveyour kids in Jewish life is by sending them to a Jewishsummer camp. Research consistently shows thatparticipation in a Jewish summer camp, like CampSolomon Schechter, is one of the strongest factors thatwill lead to lifelong Jewish identity. While at camp, ourkids are immersed in prayer, Jewish learning, singingsongs, and much more all while surrounded by otherJewish kids and having an amazing time! Finally, you can also implement this at home. The morewe involve our kids in Jewish life – bringing them to shulfor Jewish holidays, eating Shabbat dinner together, anddiscussing Jewish values on a regular basis - the moreJudaism and the Jewish community will become a corepart of who they are. And ultimately, isn’t that the bestinvolvement of all?F R O M TH E D I R E C T O R OF L I V N O T: J U L I E H A Y O NAttention All High School Students:The Livnot Project is honored to welcome Nigel Savage foran engaging and interactive conversation and think tank. The Food Justice class will co-lead a fun, thoughtprovokingevent with Nigel Savage on April 21from 1-3 pm.Come learn the most effective ways to createenvironmental change and the next big trends in foodjustice and the environment. Adult EducationApproaching the Divine Other –Opportunities, Dangers, and ResponsibilitiesInstructor: Beth HuppinStudy of Jewish texts can help us talk about our innerspiritual life. Sometimes God feels near, and other timesGod feels far away, and both can be frightening andconfusing. How can we talk about it? Frequently we don’thave a common language for an experience that is veryprivate. By definition, God is beyond language. Our textsare filled with guidance and metaphors for this deeplypersonal spiritual experience. From the Bible to the Rabbisof the Talmud, to the “hevraya” of the Zohar (Jewishmystical text), to Hassidic literature, our people havegrappled with issues of the human spirit and how weexperience God. We seek these spiritual experiences fordifferent reasons, but especially at difficult and/ortransitional times in our lives. Examine traditional texts thatspeak about these issues. Learn the language of Jewishmystical practice and the great responsibilities, dangers andopportunities that can be created by these experiences.Time: Choose between Tuesday morning at 9-10:00am,Tuesday evening at 7-8:00pm, and Tuesday evening at8:15-9:15pmSection VDates: April 9-23 (3 weeks)Cost: $30/Member, $45/Non-memberShabbat LearningThere is no charge for Shabbat Learning.Learn Talmud after Lunch with Rabbi Stuart LightWhat’s Shabbas without a little Talmudic logic? Ithas long been regarded as a rare treasure of our Torahtradition. Pirkei Avot, as contrasted with the Talmud’sdiscussions around Jewish law, centers our attention directlyon the Jew’s efforts to improve one’s relationship with G-dand fellow human being. Of all the many commentarieswritten on Avoth, perhaps the clearest is that published in1747 by Rabbi Yitzchak Magriso of Constantinople , as partof the famed Me’am Lo’ez series. His commentary waswritten in Ladino and was translated into English in 1978 byDavid N. Barocas, a Sephardic scholar from Rodesto, Turkeyand then edited into a contemporary idiom by Rabbi AryehKaplan. Rabbi Magriso ferrets out the root meaning of thetext, and presents it in clear, unambiguous language.Stories, parables and ethical discussions round out hiscommentary to produce a clear and highly inspirationalteaching.Time: All classes held onSection VTuesday nights, 8:15—9:15pmDates: April 9-23 (3 weeks)Cost: $30/Member, $45/Non-memberNew Spring Session of Pirkei AvotWednesday nights, 7-8:00pmDates: May 1– June 26th (8 weeks)Cost: $80/Member, $120/Non-memberWomen’sRosh ChodeshChavurahRosh Chodesh Iyar,Sunday, April 14, 2013, 7-9pm.KlezmerThe Yiddish word "klezmer" comes from the Hebrew words" - kley," meaning "tools or utensils," and " זמר - zemer,"meaning "to make music." No charge.Middah of the MonthNext meeting, April 27, 1:15-2:30pmTopic: Faith—EmunahThe target for a life welllived is summed up in theword wholeness (sh’lemut),about which Rabbi ShlomoWolbe says: “We seek onlyour wholeness.” Then heguides, “The foundation ofwholeness is faith.” Without faith, wholeness willelude us.Alan Morinis writes: “to my way of thinking, theprimary question is not whether or not you believe inGod, but rather a more empirical issue of where tolook to find God. If you know where to look for God,then you have the potential to perceive a reality, andthat is a far better foundation for faith than eitherblind belief or adherence to received opinions.”To build a foundation of faith, then, we need to payattention to the sorts of glimpses, intuitions andflashes that are the only way in which we can hopeto experience something of the presence of God.How can you grow in faith, or into faith? The doorway to faith is not opened by rationalthought. Only through elevated inner experience canone come to faith or strengthen the faith one has.Through reflection and learning, we may beconvinced that there must be more to life than isapparent, but it is only through lived experience thatthis notion becomes implanted as faith. Each of us needs to ask ourselves what it is thatstands in the way of opening to faith, and what wecan do about it. There are many sorts of actions thatcan be undertaken as a result of faith, and that inthe doing can also become a source of faith. This istrue of the classic acts of loving-kindness, like givingcharity, visiting the sick, clothing the naked, andburying the dead. The same is true of prayer. It islogical to think that living a life by thecommandments would demand that faith be in placefirst; my experience is that living by thecommandments fosters and nurtures faith as well. Inthe end, what is important about faith is that wekeep seeking. Please join Rabbi Harry Zeitlin and Shirah Bell toexplore emunah after Shabbat Kiddush April 27,2013, 1:15-2:30pm.(© copyright Shirah Bell.
