MPharm (Honours) Pharmacy
At the School of Pharmacy, you will experience an integrated range of
teaching and learning styles — from traditional lectures and tutorials to
practical classes and workshops.
• Lectures, usually lasting 50 minutes, are the main method of
conveying information to large groups.
• Tutorials are discussion sessions undertaken on a one-to-one basis or
in small groups with a member of staff.
• Workshops are problem-solving sessions involving larger numbers of
students than tutorials and often more than one member of staff.
• Practical classes are designed to emphasise aspects of the theory
course and improve your practical skills.
The course develops a range of transferable skills, with the ability to
work to the highest professional and ethical standards being paramount.
Our academic staff at the Malaysia Campus are drawn not only from
Nottingham's UK Campus, but also from institutions and governmental
organisations from within the UK, Malaysia and internationally.
• Amongst our staff we have academics who are qualified to practise as
pharmacists within the UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Europe, South Asia
and numerous other locations.
• Visiting Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences academics from the UK
Campus also deliver lectures, workshops and practical classes during
years one and two of the MPharm degree.
The School of Pharmacy offers a four-year undergraduate Pharmacy
programme leading to the honours degree of Master of Pharmacy
(MPharm). The MPharm programme develops naturally from the
pre-university subjects of chemistry, biology, physics and mathematics.
The first two years of the modular pharmacy course will be taught at the
Malaysia Campus and will involve the development of core pharmacy skills
and knowledge. You will then transfer to the UK for the final two years of
study. During this time you will continue your studies in pharmaceutical
sciences and learn more about the clinical and legal aspects of the
pharmacy profession. You therefore have the unrivalled opportunity of
learning and experiencing UK aspects of clinical pharmacy prior to practice.
In your third year you will have the opportunity to be involved in
pharmaceutical research by working under the supervision of a member
of the academic staff.
The Pharmacy course at Nottingham is modular.
• Modules are self-contained units of study, taught over one semester
(the academic year comprises 2 semesters - each lasting 14-16 weeks).
• The major part of the course is built up of compulsory (core) modules.
• A range of more specialised and career-orientated optional modules
across the subject areas is also available to third year students.
An element of the course is integrated with other healthcare
professions emphasising the multi-disciplinary nature of healthcare
provision in the 21st century. The programme is taught by staff who
undertake nationally and internationally recognised research, who can
reflect scientific approach in their teaching.
This course has 4 main aims:
• To provide students with the scientific, clinical and professional
expertise necessary for a career as a registered UK pharmacist.
• To enable students to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and
professional integrity required to become competent pharmacists.
• For students to develop a patient-centred approach to their practice
as pharmacists.
• To provide a breadth of education in pharmaceutical discovery,
development, action and clinical application.
The overall aim of the course is to produce excellent pharmacists — by
equipping you with both knowledge and technical ability, developing
your personal and professional skills and nurturing an ethical and
patient-centred approach, all of which are necessary for this important
profession wherever you decide to practice.
• Practising community, hospital and industrial pharmacists also
contribute to teaching at both campuses. This provides students with
a real insight into the profession of Pharmacy prior to their
graduation.
Physiology laboratory session with Dr Geoffrey Bennett, a visiting
lecturer from the UK.
We believe that a supportive environment is essential for student
development. That is why every student is allocated a personal tutor to
help with personal as well as academic issues. In addition, the School has
a Learning Community Forum that provides an opportunity for student
and academic representatives to discuss issues related to the course.
Year One
Semester 1 focuses on the transition to higher education and the
pharmacy profession. In semester 2 students are taught the
fundamentals of the course through highly integrated 'Drug, Medicine
and Patient' modules. At the end of year one, students are strongly
encouraged to take advantage of one of the many vacation work
experience placements which the School secures each year.
Year Two
You consolidate the main areas of Pharmacy through more integrated
modules. You will also study alongside a number of UK Campus
Pharmacy students who are given the opportunity to spend their second
year in Malaysia. This popular ‘study abroad scheme’ means that by the
time you transfer to the UK you are already likely to have friends at the
UK Campus.
Year Three
Some specialisation is developed in the third year with optional modules
and a research project, which may be a whole semester in length. Prior
to starting year three, students from the Malaysia Campus may possibly
undertake a short work placement in the UK pharmacy sector.
Dr Yvonne Mbaki demonstrates equipment usage in a Physiology and
Pharmacology laboratory session.
Year Four
In year 4 students carry out advanced studies in Clinical Pharmacy,
Pharmacy Practice and Science. This final year is designed to prepare
students for the work-based training that will follow their graduation.

Hospital pharmacist in the UK
Nottingham’s 2+2 pharmacy degree was a blessing for me. By studying in Malaysia for part of the degree
I felt that I was eased into university life without having to get used to being far away from friends and
family. We studied the same modules as our counterparts at the UK Campus (but I felt that we had it
better since the teaching groups were smaller than in the UK). Having passed my pre-registration exam I
am now working as a pharmacist in a UK hospital and finding myself drawing on what I learnt at the
University of Nottingham - even the things that I had thought would be of no use to me when I qualified
as a pharmacist!
Graduated: 2009
PhD student at School of Pharmacy, Nottingham (UK)
I belong to the pioneer batch of the 2+2 pharmacy course. Upon graduation, I entered my
pre-registration year with an NHS district general hospital in the UK. It was a challenging year but the
University of Nottingham’s course equips each and every graduate with the knowledge, critical thinking
skills and soft skills needed to be a professional pharmacist in a wide variety of sectors such as
community, hospital and industry. Since passing my pre-registration exam and registering as a pharmacist
in the UK I have now commenced an Industrial PhD with my alma mater and Novo Nordisk of Denmark.
My project involves studying Factor XI of the clotting cascade using protein X-ray crystallography as a
tool for drug discovery, an interest that has developed during my undergraduate years.
Hospital pharmacist in Singapore
I was fortunate enough to secure a training post at one of the UK’s largest and busiest acute teaching
hospitals – the Queen’s Medical Centre Campus of the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The
pre-registration training involved a lot of learning and gaining the experience and knowledge to prepare
ourselves as pharmacists. Having passed my pre-registration examination and registering as a pharmacist
in the UK, I decided to jet over and work as a hospital pharmacist in Singapore. Although I have only
recently graduated, the recognition of the Nottingham 2+2 MPharm degree has already allowed me to
practise in two different countries.
PhD student at School of Pharmacy, Nottingham (UK)
Throughout these four years, I was given plenty of opportunities to apply and enhance my
clinical knowledge within the community and hospital pharmacy settings in Malaysia and in
the UK. During my first year, I secured a summer placement in the School of Pharmacy at the
Malaysia Campus for 2 weeks. The following year, I had an opportunity to spend 8 weeks at
Alliance Boots Pharmacy (one of Europe’s largest community pharmacy chains) in the Isle of
Wight (UK). Under the close supervision of my tutor and store manager, I learnt and
experienced the roles of a community pharmacist in the UK. During my third year, I was back
to Malaysia for a placement with the Hospital University Kebangsaan Malaysia, where I
gained full exposure to all the departments within the hospital setting. Completing the
pharmacy course is not the end of the story, the next chapter of my life will be continuing my
pre-registration training with the general hospital in Malaysia to practise as a pharmacist
locally.
Upon graduation I undertook the split pre-registration training program with
GlaxoSmithKline and Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS trust. I was based at GSK for the first
six months and the training was intensely focused on quality roles. The second six months was
a comprehensive rotational training programme with an emphasis on clinical pharmacy in the
Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS trust. Being part of a healthcare team, working closely with
other healthcare professionals and fulfilling individual patients’ needs makes each and every
day at work a highly enjoyable experience. After my pre-registration training, I was glad to be
awarded an International Research Scholarship by the University of Nottingham to undertake
a PhD studentship with the Nottingham School of Pharmacy, Medicinal Chemistry Division. I
believe that the PhD in medicinal chemistry will take my interest and experience a step higher
and prepare me for the challenges of 21st Century healthcare.
BSc Pharmaceutical and
Health Sciences
Is a career in Pharmaceutical Sciences right for me
Do you enjoy science and want to pursue a science-based career
Do you like to work hands-on in a laboratory setting
Do you have a desire to contribute to the health and wellbeing of society
through the development, production and marketing of medicines and
therapies
If so, then a career in pharmaceutical sciences may be for you.
The BSc programme is distinct from the MPharm degree. You will study
core modules delivered by the Schools of Pharmacy and Biomedical
Sciences as well as optional modules from both within and outside of
the Faculty of Science. For example, in the final year of the
Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences degree students take advanced
modules in areas such as Drug Delivery, Drug Design and Molecular
Pharmacology as well as optional modules in areas such as Marketing,
Entrepreneurship and Business. Graduates of the BSc programme will
therefore be ideally placed for a career in Malaysia’s burgeoning RM 1.4
billion pharmaceutical industry.
Year 1
Teaching will concentrate on the fundamentals of the main areas of the
course which are Pharmaceutical/Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutics,
Physiology & Pharmacology, Cellular & Molecular Biology. There are also
additional specialist lectures on areas key to the pharmaceutical
industry.
Year 2
You will consolidate the main topics taught in year one and start to
the introduction of a selection of optional modules including some in
the field of business and entrepreneurship to meet the needs of
employers in the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare sectors. Crucially, a
semester-long research project allows the student to develop scientific
research and data analysis skills in an area of their choosing.
Career opportunities
Pharmaceutical scientists are central to the discovery and development
of new drug entities, formulation science and the design of novel drug
delivery systems and therapeutics. Graduates with a BSc in
Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences would be well placed to pursue
careers in the following areas:
• Pharmaceutical, cosmetic, chemical or biotechnology industries as
researchers or managers
• Academics in institutions of higher education
• Medical sales and marketing
• Scientific writing
• Other appointments which require a general science background
Open Days
Dr Andrew Morris
Director of Studies, Pharmacy
University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus
Throughout the year we will be holding Open Days from time to time.
Our Open Days will give you and your parents/guardians an opportunity
to visit us and to ask any questions you have about aspects of the course
and life at the campus. There will be a short briefing about the MPharm
and BSc courses and you will also have the opportunity to join a guided
tour around the School. During the Open Days, MPharm applicants will
also be interviewed by members of our academic staff. Interviews and
Open Days run throughout the year and you will be given the
opportunity to reschedule if the date allocated to you is not convenient.
Look out for our School newspaper advertisements. Alternatively, do
browse our pharmacy website at www.nottingham.edu.my/pharmacy
for more information and announcements of Open Day dates.
Our academic year commences in mid September. Prospective students
are encouraged to submit applications from January onwards.
Applications will be considered by our Admission Tutors and a decision
will be made within 2 working weeks. Students that meet the entry
requirements for the MPharm course will be invited for interviews during
one of our Open Days.
You may apply for a conditional offer using your forecast results. If you
already have your final grades you may apply for unconditional entry.
Although September may seem a long way off we recommend that you
use the intervening time to try and gain some Pharmacy experience,
which will be an invaluable aid during your studies.
