National School Tournaments <strong>2010</strong>/11<br />

Primary, intermediate and secondary school cricketers from throughout<br />

the country competed in the annual national schools’ development<br />

competitions and their finals tournaments.<br />

The <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> <strong>Cricket</strong> development department organize and run<br />

the national tournaments. These events are a major opportunity to<br />

profile and promote cricket to younger players.<br />

· The national secondary school boys’ Gillette Cup [est. 1990]<br />

· The national secondary school <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> Community Trust Girls’<br />

Cup [est. 1995]<br />

· The national primary school MILO Cup (boys) and MILO Shield (girls)<br />

[est. 2000]<br />

· The national secondary school <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> Community Trust<br />

Junior Boys’ Cup [est. 2004].<br />

More than 10,500 players, from over 850 schools, now compete in these<br />

tournaments. In many cases, the competitions provide the stimulus<br />

for schools to create a cricket team, giving pupils the opportunity to<br />

participate in competitive cricket from the local to national level.<br />

The most recognisable of the competitions is the long standing Gillette<br />

Cup. In this year’s final Kings College from Auckland beat defending<br />

champions Christchurch Boys’ High School in a hard fought match.<br />

The NZCT Secondary Girl’s competition was won by Christchurch Girls’<br />

High School who beat Hillcrest High School in the final at Taupo.<br />

The NZCT Junior Boy’s, also held in Taupo, came down to a clash<br />

between two Canterbury teams with Christchurch Boys’ High edging out<br />

Shirley Boys’ High to lift the Cup.<br />

The annual MILO Cup (boys) and MILO Shield (girls) were played in<br />

Palmerston North with Raroa Normal Intermediate School taking out the<br />

MILO Cup and Tawa Intermediate lifting the MILO Shield.<br />

Secondary School <strong>Cricket</strong> Coordinators<br />

The network of Secondary School <strong>Cricket</strong> Coordinators was expanded<br />

this year with 40 positions in place around the country. Coordinators<br />

oversee the organisation and running of cricket in these schools.<br />

The growth of this network will enable more schools to service and<br />

sustain the game, and assist school leavers in making the transition into<br />

club cricket.<br />
