Good for its own sake. 75 Put still another way, a virtue<br />

is an excellence of your moral character that helps<br />

you become all that you can be. No wonder that the<br />

<strong>Air</strong> Force sees “excellence” as a virtue or Core Value.<br />

When someone is lazy or mediocre at his job, we<br />

object because we know he can be better. It’s wrong<br />

not to do your best. It’s wrong not to have a habit of<br />

striving toward goodness for its own sake. Perhaps<br />

our slacker will get into trouble at school or work and<br />

eventually disappoint everyone in his life, including<br />

himself. So the slacker’s life lacks virtue and produces<br />

misery, while the focused achiever achieves virtue<br />

and becomes happy in the process. Virtue and happiness<br />

go together.<br />

The Pursuit of Virtue. The quest for virtue is a heroic<br />

adventure and pursuit of the good life. “Men are good in one way,” teaches<br />

Aristotle, “but bad in many.” 76<br />

Right Desire. Good conduct presupposes that you have the right desire. 77<br />

Have you ever heard of someone anonymously donating money to a charity<br />

The donor remains secret because her desire is simply to help the charity.<br />

That desire is proper. But perhaps you’ve also seen someone do something<br />

nice only for the recognition. In that case, the desire is improper because it<br />

aims at recognition, not at the virtue of generosity.<br />

True Reason. Men and women have the capability to think. Therefore,<br />

their teleological end is to be rational thinkers. You always have to be in deep<br />

thought to be virtuous because you’re trying to live your life in accord with<br />

reason. The fact that people debate and philosophize and persuade one another<br />

shows that we believe good reasoning is important. 78<br />

Balance. Recall that in chapter 3, we discussed Aristotle’s golden mean.<br />

Virtue lies between two extremes. For example, it’s wrong to be a nosey<br />

neighbor. It’s also wrong to be so aloof that you don’t know your neighbors.<br />

It’s best to be friendly with your neighbors while still respecting their privacy.<br />

This idea of balance is not just theoretical, it is something each person can<br />

discover on his or her own, through reason. A person who is inclined to shyness<br />

becomes virtuous by being a bit more outgoing and daring to accept a<br />

public speaking assignment. A person who is inclined to be an outgoing<br />

chatterbox (the opposite of our shy person) becomes virtuous by listening<br />

more carefully and acting with a bit more reserve.<br />

Discipleship. Right and wrong is whatever produces and expresses<br />

character of a certain sort, the type of character we call virtue. In this way,<br />

each person is a disciple, a disciplined follower of an “ideal man.” For example,<br />

regardless of its religious message, the “WWJD” bracelets some Christians<br />

wear (“What Would Jesus Do”) illustrate the principle. These individuals are<br />

saying that they measure their actions against an idealized figure, in their<br />

case, Jesus. As such, they are pursuing virtue ethics. Likewise, <strong>Air</strong> Force lore<br />

is filled with idealized figures, paragons of virtue. <strong>Air</strong> Force Academy cadets,<br />

for example, study the steadfast loyalty and valor of Capt Lance Sijan, a<br />
