Awards and Scholarships Congratulations to these exemplary staff members for being recognized for their contributions. NYSARC, Inc. Thomas A. Maul Direct Support Professional (DSP) Excellence Award - Tom Bushnell, a Community Habilitation aide, was nominated for this regional award in recognition of the former OMRDD Commissioner. Recipients consistently demonstrate excellence, creativity and commitment in providing supports to people with developmental disabilities. J. Michael Fitzgibbons Scholarship to Lena Benvenuto, Art Coordinator at Creative Endeavors, who will apply the $500 towards a computer graphic class that will benefit individuals across the agency. Established in his memory by his family, friends and business associates, Michael was the Treasurer of the Board of Directors for many years. Mary Frawley Scholarship to Matt Durkee, Day Habilitation Assistant with the Day Hab Without Walls Program, who will apply the $500 towards his degree in Special Education at SUNY Adirondack. Established in her memory by her family, Mary was the well-loved Director of Day Services for our Wilton and Clifton Park sites. Mary Lawless Scholarship to Deidre Therrien, a LPN in our Residential Program, who will apply the $500 towards her degree as a Registered Professional Nurse at SUNY Adirondack. Honoring Those Who Care 13 Everyday Heroes The third year of our Everyday Heroes initiative concluded with these teams showcasing their journeys: Catherine Spaneas (hero), Sandy Izzo (mentor), Gary Tetreault (individual) Gary spent many Saturdays volunteering with Catherine for Homes for Orphaned Pets Exist (H.O.P.E.) animal rescue. Together they enjoyed dinner with friends, camping on Lake George where Gary learned to drive a boat and going to Fort Ticonderoga and the Aero Sciences Museum. Heather DeMayo (hero), Tiffanie Clark (mentor), Jeffrey Lewis (individual) Since Jeffrey is a huge car fan, he and Heather went to several races at the Malta Speedway and volunteered at Saratoga Bridges All Car and Truck Show. Heather helped Jeffrey organize dances at the Clifton Park Day Hab and they explored new places to visit in his neighborhood. Jennie Zuger (hero), Amie Maguire (mentor), Danielle Guy (individual) As Danielle loves Johnny Depp, Jennie assisted her in becoming a member of his fan club and writing letters to him. They had a spa day and went to the golf driving range. Most importantly to Danielle, they spent time having lunches with her friend David before he moved to Florida and keeping in touch with him since then. Joanne White (hero), Melanie Jones (mentor), Elizabeth Hassell (individual) With Elizabeth becoming a new member of the Saratoga Bridges family, she wanted to improve her self image. Joanne took Liz for her first manicure and her hair cut. Liz was thrilled with her appearance and proudly showed it off at a local carnival, trip to Lake George and other community outings. Joseph DeVivo (hero), Lena Benvenuto (mentor), Joey Giannone (individual) Joseph helped Joey apply for and obtain a library card from the Malta Library. They attended art classes at Saratoga Arts and participated in several exhibits. Together with Catherine and Gary, they went to Fort Ticonderoga and the Aero Sciences Museum. Joseph arranged for Joey to go roller skating with friends. Kim Falanga (hero), Lucia Valentine (mentor), Phil Dickenson (individual) Kim arranged opportunities for Phil to connect with his sister and other members of his extended family. They had a gathering that provided Phil a chance to see people he had not seen in a while. Kim and Phil took a great trip to Boston to visit several places including the aquarium. Sonya Durrum (hero), Becky Merilo (mentor), Lisa Pyzewlocki (individual) Lisa was interested in pursuing new sites and locations to explore in her community. Sonya saw this as an opportunity to provide Lisa with fun, enjoyable activities. They were able to attend a rock concert at SPAC and eat out on several occasions. Stacey Kepner (hero), Jennifer Rivers (mentor), Jay Putaski (individual) Jay loves the excitement at the Saratoga Gaming and Raceway so they went there several times to watch harness horses race and to play with the slot machines. Because Stacey and Jay both love photography, they took excursions to shoot favorite sites around Saratoga. Then Stacey helped Jay put together a book of all his photos. Steven Gibbs (hero), Zachery Richards (mentor), Douglas Halter (individual) Douglas wanted to pursue some new community opportunities. Steven took him to the Malta Speedway and arranged many activities for Douglas to increase his courtship with his long- time girlfriend. Steven also took Douglas fishing so he could catch the “big one”. On July 20th several people from OPWDD visited Mt. Ledge, our seniors Day Program, to view the interactions first-hand after hearing such glowing accolades. Cecile Gutchell, our Senior Companion, who was recognized as our Volunteer of the Year, told her Supervisor Charlotte Hooper that she was touched by the recognition and had expressed how the job had changed her life.
