Penn State Game Day - FRIDAY, September 24. 2010 - 2
MAILBAG BY NEIL RUDEL
PSU fans kind of hoping
there is no Temple upset
Sorting through the Penn State
mailbag in search of the Lions’
first four-quarter performance
of the season:
Neil:
They had better be ready to play this Saturday.
This has the potential to be a big
game with ramifications about the future of
PSU football.
They could get outhustled. They could get
outcoached. They could get outplayed and
lose.
It would be a signature win for Golden. It
would also be a statement game: Al Golden
should be the next head coach at Penn State.
Nice change of pace on your Bear Bryant
column. I hear Joe is getting “Caller ID” installed.
Ron Falk
Ron:
Even with Caller ID, my hunch is he takes
the Bear’s call.
Neil:
A buddy and I watched the game. He’s a
Michigan fan and thus has had his share of
hard knocks the past few years.
He looks for a statistic (he claims it as his
own) called YAFT or Yards After First
Tackle. He estimated that ’Bama gained 94
yards after the first tackle (a miss).
If there is one signature belief during the
Paterno era it is this: In big games, win or
lose, the Lions always seem to play above
their ranking or expectation.
“Joe will throw something at them” has
been a sort of rallying cry among the faithful.
But combined with the USC loss two
years ago, I am wondering if we really have
the stuff to compete with the best in the
country.
Greg Guise
Falls Church, Va.
Greg:
We’ll have to agree to disagree: I don’t
see the Lions playing “above their ranking”
in big games much anymore.
Neil:
After the Alabama game, Joe made the
comment “we didn’t do a very good job
coaching, getting ready for this thing.”
Why not He knew this game was on the
schedule, and he had plenty of time to get
the team ready. He plays the same way
every year against good teams so I guess we
just expect it and move on to the next game.
PSU was lucky Alabama only put 24
points on the board.
Randy Sibert
Harrisburg
Randy:
Other than the red-zone turnovers, I
thought the game went as expected — at no
point were the Nittany Lions a threat to win.
Neil:
Better to get a bloody nose from ’Bama
than scrimmage Youngstown State and
Kent.
There is a silver lining: PSU did move the
ball consistently and at least taught the rest
of the SEC how to beat ’Bama through misdirection.
I’m sure the players and coaches learned
what’s needed if they want a top-level team
this season, and PSU will be much better
from here on.
Weekly Pick
Line: Penn State is a 14-point favorite.
Inside the line: In the last four years,
Temple has yet to score a touchdown
against the Lions, but the Owls did a cover
a 29-point line in 2009 in a 31-6 loss ...
Previous three years: Owls got 29, 24 and
36 but lost 45-3 in 2008, 31-0 at home in
’07 and 47-0 in ’06 ... In last decade, Owls
are 0-9 straight up vs. Big Ten and 1-8 vs.
number with lone cover a 23-10 loss to
PSU in 2003 ... In its last 70 games as a
road dog, Temple is 9-61 straight up but
35-34-1 vs. number ... After an underdog
win, which was the case last week after getting
6 points vs. UConn, Owls are 23-20 vs.
RECRUITING CORNER
Nittany Lions starting
to focus on the lines
By PHILIP CMOR
pcmor@altoonamirror.com
Although quarterbacks, running backs,
receivers and linebackers mostly excite
football fans, it’s still always the guys in
the trenches that form the foundation of a
football team.
Penn State’s coaches seem really focused
on shoring up those positions this year, in
spite of the fact that a lot of people think
the secondary is a bigger area of need and
that they signed four offensive linemen
and highly-rated DaQuan Jones and Evan
Hailes in February to follow up a strong
group headed up by Eric Shrive, Sean
Stanley and Jordan Hill in 2009.
The Nittany Lions are in good shape at
defensive end. They already have commitments
from 6-foot-8 Shawn Oakman and
Erie County’s Jordan Kerner, both sleepers
with big upside. On top of that, Penn State
is among the leaders for Ishaq Williams of
New York and Deion Barnes from
Philadelphia, who are both fairly highly
rated.
Williams is ranked as the No. 1 prospect
in his state, and Abraham Lincoln High
School coach Shawn O’Connor says he is
a Jason Taylor-type player on the scholastic
level.
Expected to be a January enrollee,
Williams is believed to be down to Penn
State, Notre Dame and Alabama, essentially,
with the Lions having the inside track.
Barnes is a very similar prospect in size
and speed; he’ll play in the Chesapeake
Bowl all-star game with Lion offensive
line commit Angelo Mangiro following the
season. Again, Penn State is reputed to be
the school to beat.
The Lions also are currently co-favorites
for Michigan’s Anthony Zettel, who some
see as a guard but probably fits into Penn
State’s plans on defense. Michigan is his
other current leader.
Mangiro has gotten the Lion offensive
line recruiting off to a solid start. He’s considered
a typical Penn State guard. With
11 signees from the past two classes still
with the team — and some now cracking
the two-deep depth chart — the Lions
might only bring in one other offensive
lineman with the 2011 class. The odds-on
favorite is four-star Maryland tackle Donovan
Smith. Suburban D.C.’s Jay Whitmire
is a possibility, but he sees more likely
headed to in-state Virginia.
Ohio’s mammoth Aundrey Walker is a
very long shot.
The Lions’ biggest concerns are at defensive
tackle.
Penn State lost out on a couple of its top
targets quickly when Marquise Wright
picked Pitt and Marco Jones chose Virginia.
The Lions would probably like to
bring in at least two tackles, one at each
spot.
At 6-foot-1, 295 pounds, Maryland’s
Darian Cooper could develop into an Anthony
Adams/Ollie Ogbu on the nose. He’s
still far from whittling down his list, but
Penn State is in as good a position as any
of his top contenders. Florida’s Quinton
Pompey has emerged as a surprise
prospect to nab the other scholarship, and
Ohio linebacker Andre Sturdivant might
figure in, as some project him to grown into
a tackle.
However, the situation is very fluid at the
position. Just recently, Iowa Western
Community College’s Jared Ebert showed
up on the radar. Also, 6-1, 316-pound
Shaun Underwood could be back in play
because of the uncertainty surrounding potential
BIG 10 NOTEBOOK
Iowa special teams
not so special thus far
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz had been
worried about his special teams since fall camp.
Against Arizona, it didn’t take long to see why.
The Hawkeyes opened Saturday night’s 34-27 loss by allowing
a quick touchdown after a blocked punt deep in their own territory,
then gave up another on a kickoff return in the second quarter.
No. 18 Iowa (2-1) made a valiant comeback effort against the
Wildcats and were poised to take the lead in the fourth quarter after
Broderick Binns’ interception return for a score. But kicker
Trent Mossbrucker’s extra-point try was blocked, and Arizona responded
with the winning touchdown.
The Hawkeyes fell from ninth to 18th in the polls after the loss,
which can be blamed in large part on Iowa’s not-so-special teams.
Ferentz said Tuesday that the coaching staff is mulling major
changes in time for Saturday’s non-conference finale against Ball
State (1-2).
“Two things have to happen. Either we have to mix in some veteran
guys that have done it already, and that’s one option. Or the
second thing is, some other guys have step up and grow up a little
bit.” Ferentz said. “The opportunity is there for guys right now, and
that’s what we need. We need somebody to take a little ownership,
jump in there and go.”
Iowa’s issues began in the opener, but few noticed as the
Hawkeyes rolled to a 2-0 start.
Eastern Illinois surprised the Hawkeyes with a fake punt from
their own 20 and rumbled 36 yards en route to their only touchdown.
Iowa also struggled covering kickoffs against Iowa State,
though it didn’t matter much as the Hawkeyes cruised to a 35-7
win.
But Ferentz dubbed the performance of Iowa’s coverage units
against Cyclones “pathetic” and said that if it happened again in
Arizona, they’d be down 28 at halftime.
Try 20.
Iowa’s Ryan Donohue, one of the nation’s top punters, never had
a chance as David Roberts blew past the Hawkeyes line to block
the punt and set up Arizona’s first score. Iowa later pulled within
14-7, but Travis Cobb ran 100 yards on the subsequent kickoff to
give Arizona a 21-7 lead.
Iowa ranks 115th out of 120 FBS teams in allowing 30.9 yards
per kickoff return, even though freshman kickoff specialist
Michael Meyer has had six touchbacks in 17 tries.
“We’ve just got to either change our mindset or change some personnel,
and maybe a combination of both,” Ferentz said. “We’ll
look at everything this week and try to get it straightened out. I said
that a week ago and it went from bad to worse.”
GIGERʼS GAME
BREAKDOWN
PENN STATE
There are still major question marks.
QB Rob Bolden has to start protecting
ball better (5 INTs, 3 TDs), and
RB Evan Royster must get going (31
carries, 110 yards). Royster picked
Temple game last year to find his
stride with 134 yards on 19 carries.
Lions coming off shutout, but three
games in there are injuries (DE
Crawford, S Astorino) and position
battles (both DE spots, OLB) that
prevent entire unit from getting cohesive.
Front seven will load up to stop
run since Temple
not a great passing team.
It’s amazing, after last year’s major
troubles, that this is the strength of
the team. Solid everywhere so far.
PK Collin Wagner is 5-of-6 on FGs,
and P Anthony Fera averaging 41
yards per kick. KO returners Chaz
Powell and Stephfon
Green both dangerous.
Joe Paterno has never lost to Temple
as a head coach, winning all 26 meetings.
The Lions also haven’t given up
a TD against the Owls in the past
four games, outscoring them, 154-9.
Anyone thinking Temple has good
shot at upset needs to think again.
OFFENSE
DEFENSE
SPECIAL TEAMS
COACHING/INTANGIBLES
TEMPLE
RB Bernard Pierce has been a force
averaging 100 yards per game, but
Villanova, Central Michigan and
UConn aren’t exactly great run stoppers.
QB Chester Stewart has completed
61.4 percent for 510 yards, 2
TDs and no INTs so far.
Owls aren’t great, giving up 141 yards
rushing and 207 passing per game
against suspect competition. Their defense
has allowed more plays (203 to
180) and more yards (1,043 to 943)
than their offense has gained, yet
somehow they enter this 3-0.
Temple is traditionally solid here. PK
Brandon McManus is 7-of-10 and 4-of-
5 beyond 40 yards. P Jeff Wathne averaging
38.8 yards. Owls have allowed
only 6 yards on punt returns and have
good one themselves as Delano Green
averages 8.8 yards.
Al Golden and his staff are doing a
fine job at Temple and led the team
to its first bowl game in 30 years last
season. Another one should be in the
cards this year. Golden and coordinators
Mark D’Onofrio and Matt Rhule
all played at PSU
and know program well.
PREDICTION: Just like last year, look for Royster to finally get going against Temple and for offense to play a more crisp
MEDIA COMMENTARY
BTN has established
its place in television
What has become a Big Ten Network tradition
— one of the longest-running in
terms of football broadcasts on the fouryear-old
network — renews Saturday
when Penn State plays host to Temple.
The Big Ten Network has broadcast
the annual non-conference matchup
each of the past two years, making it a
staple on the network’s schedule.
Although the outcome Saturday
might not differ from that of the past
couple years (or anytime in the past
40 years when Penn State and Temple
have played for that matter), the outlet
— the Big Ten Network itself — certainly
has changed greatly since its inception
in 2007 and the first Penn
State-Temple game in 2008.
Three years ago, viewers in much of STEVE
Pennsylvania could not get the channel
at all. This year, only small pock-
SAMPSELL
ets of viewers served by four cable
companies do not carry the BTN in Pennsylvania.
Three years ago, the thought of a successful network carrying
mostly sports and shunning advertising for alcohol
and gambling seemed far-fetched, at best. This year, the
BTN finds itself enjoying an almost unrivaled growth period.
Viewers in more than 75 million homes in 38 states (including
19 of the top 20 U.S. television markets) and Canada
have access to the network. One firm that analyzes the
media industry, SNL Kagan, estimates the BTN will produce
more than $272 million in revenue and 36 percent
profits by 2012.
The Big Ten Conference owns 51 percent of the network,
and Fox owns the minority stake at 49 percent. Still, the network
has been a 100 percent winner since its inception.
With devoted alumni/fans from 11 schools (and 12 once
Nebraska begins competition next year), the conference and
its network have a group of vocal viewers to lobby for the
channel to be added to their respective cable lineups. As a
result, the BTN has been able to secure an average of 36
cents per subscriber from cable companies that carry it.
That’s lower than what outlets such as ESPN charge, but
it still produces a hefty revenue stream — even before another
$21 million from ad revenue gets added to the pot.
And, to its credit, the BTN has not taken the money and
pocketed it. Sure, schools benefit from the division of income,
but broadcast quality has improved since 2007 and a
variety of non-game programming has been added as well.
So far, it’s been a clear-cut winner, providing a model that
some other leagues, such as the Pac-10 Conference, hope to
follow.
And with Penn State and Temple agreeing this week to
play games in 2014, 2015 and 2016 those matchups have
an almost guaranteed home on the BTN.
FOOTBALL
New Irish starting to
look like 2009 team
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — There are
few things Notre Dame fans enjoy more
than reveling in their history.
This is not what they had in mind.
After two straight losses, each by less
than a touchdown, each thanks to a late
score, this year’s version of the Fighting
Irish is starting to look an awful lot like
last season’s. That team limped to a 6-6
finish and got Charlie Weis fired, and the
Irish were confident that kind of ugliness
was a thing of the past when Brian Kelly
was hired to resuscitate the once-proud
program.
But Kelly insists Notre Dame is not on
the verge of another tailspin. Take away
one play here and there, and the Irish
record looks much different.
‘‘We’re in the first quarter of our season,
first chapter of the book. I think it’s a
little frustrating to read right now, but I’d
stick with the book. I think it’s going to be
a good read,’’ he said. ‘‘This team is getting
better each week. They’re frustrated
right now that they haven’t got it over the
finish line, so to speak, but I like our kids
and the way they’re competing.’’
Dating back to last Nov. 1, Notre Dame
(1-2) has lost six of seven games. That
kind of losing percentage would be
enough to set off a panic around these
parts — Knute Rockne needed eight years
to lose six games — but even more disturbing
was the way the Irish lost.
All six losses were by a touchdown or
less, and all but one were decided late in
the fourth quarter. Two, including Saturday’s
loss at Michigan State, were in
overtime.
‘‘I’ve had teams that didn’t know how
to win. You could just tell. That’s not this
group,’’ Kelly said. ‘‘They need to play
cleaner. They’ve got to do some things
during the game that obviously puts them
in a position to close out games.’’
Just look at the stats. Take away those
two fumbles in the red zone at Michigan
State, and the game doesn’t even go to
overtime. Maybe if Dayne Crist didn’t
have to sit out most of the first half against
Michigan after getting a shot to the head,
it might be Notre Dame, not the Wolverines,
back in the Top 25.
Oh, and consider that the Irish were
without starting safety Jamoris Slaughter
(sprained ankle) against Michigan and for
part of the Michigan State game.
‘‘When you play evenly matched football
teams and they play well, then it
comes down to a couple of plays,’’ Kelly
said. ‘‘That’s what we have to get to.’’
But perhaps most reassuring is the Irish
themselves. Unlike the last few years,
when players often appeared dazed and
beaten down as the losses began to pile
up, Kelly said his team is as fired up as it
was when it started training camp.
Maybe even more so.
Tennessee substantially
but lost on two long runbacks
by Bobby Majors
and a long return of an
interception by Jackie
Walker. That Penn State
team later roasted
Texas in the Cotton
Bowl. I think that was
Joeʼs best team with
Hufnagel, Lydell
Mitchell and Franco
Harris.
My favorite PSU rivalry:
I hate Ohio State.
Iʼve hated them since
1963 and ʼ64 when I
was in high school and
we beat ʼem twice —
and they still lorded it
over us.
My all-time favorite
win: It has to be the
Georgia game that finally
won the first national
title in the 1983 Sugar
Bowl.
Former Penn State assistant
turning around Temple
WINE MAKING
UNIVERSITY PARK —
When Al Golden decided in
2005 to take over at Temple, he
heard from a number of people
who questioned why he would
want to become the head coach
at a school that had lost 31 of
34 games in the three years before
he took over.
Professional and college
teams saturated the Philadelphia
market, Temple had no
football tradition and minimal
fan support existed, and the
combination derailed coaching
careers.
In fact, one of Golden’s predecessors
at Temple, Ron Dickerson,
said his experience with
the Owls’ program in the early
1990s was “probably the demise”
of his fledgling coaching
career, which included a sevenyear
stint under Joe Paterno.
But Golden, a Penn State captain
on the 1991 squad and the
team’s linebackers coach/recruiting
coordinator in 2000, is
enjoying success where many
others who came before him
never could. Temple won nine
games last season in finishing
with its first winning record
since 1990, and the Owls
played in their first bowl game
in 30 years.
“The people closest to me, for
the most part, understood and
supported my reasons for taking
the job and the vision I had for
the program. … But certainly,
there’s skeptics,” Golden said.
Those skeptics have turned into
believers, both within and
outside the program. Golden’s
success has placed him in the
running for jobs at UCLA,
Cincinnati and Tennessee, and
he would likely be a candidate
if Penn State hires from the outside
to replace Paterno.
Some never needed to witness
Golden’s success to become a
believer.
“The confidence he has when
he talks to you, I don’t know
what it is,” safety Justin Gildea
said. “When he came to my
house and visited me whenever
he was recruiting me, he sat
down with my parents, and I
knew then this guy was going to
take Temple places.”
Staples of a traditional Paterno-coached
team are engrained
into the Owls, and Golden said
Paterno’s fingerprints and Temple’s
success aren’t coincidental.
The Owls, 3-0 for the first
time since 1979, bring a stable
running game, ball-hawking defense
and resiliency in the
fourth quarter into Saturday’s
matchup against Penn State.
“No matter what, it’s about
the process,” Golden said. “It’s
about your core values. It’s
about not compromising your
values or your integrity or academics,
and I certainly hope
that’s what we’re doing here. …
I think that obviously starts
with Coach Paterno and his
staff and all those guys there
that obviously helped mold me
and helped teach me and helped
mentor me.”
Penn State defensive tackle
Ollie Ogbu was around in
2006, the year before Golden
took over, and redshirted when
the teams met that year in a 47-
0 whitewashing.
Temple was comically overmatched
in recording just two
first downs that day, and although
the series has still been
lopsided (Penn State has
outscored Temple 154-9 in the
last four contests), Ogbu has
seen the progress.
“Every year I’ve been here,
they’ve gotten tougher, tougher
and tougher,” he said. “And
they have that Philly bravado.
They’re tough guys, and they
want to come in here and push
us around because we’re all
‘high and mighty’ Penn State.”
Golden virtually laughed off
any suggestion his team was in
a position to knock off Penn
State for the first time since
1961, noting “the gap is huge
between us and them.” He cited
the score over the past four
years: 154-9. He cited the total
yardage disparity: 1,073. He
cited the difference in punts:
17.
“I could go on and on,” Golden
said.
He stopped himself there, but
other numbers surrounding his
blossoming program like wins
and losses have caught the attention
of his former colleagues,
even if, for one day,
friendships are cast aside.
“I’m happy for him,” Penn
State defensive coordinator
Tom Bradley said. “I cheer for
him all the time. It’s just one
week of the year that I don’t.
And I mean that. I hope he does
well. He’s a special person.”
