This course is designed to give the student a general background to prepare for first year college
chemistry. It promises to be challenging while providing a good foundation for future studies.
Pre-requisites: Algebra 1 and currently enrolled in Algebra 2 or higher.
Materials:
Chemistry books will not be handed out to each student; however, a book is available
for any student that would like to check one out to use as a reference.
A scientific calculator. It must at least have exponents, scientific notation
and logs. Most of you already have an appropriate calculator that is required for your math
class. A cell phone is not an acceptable calculator.
A lecture notebook. A three ring binder is suggested so you can add
pages; such as, worksheets, homework, etc. Dividers for each section.
Notebook paper.
Pencils, pens, ruler.
A quad ruled lab notebook. We will distribute these.
Safety goggles. Will be provided; however, if you want your own pair, they
can be purchased at any college bookstore, Home Depot, any place with
welding supplies. They must have side and top shielding.
A roll of paper towels, a box of Kleenex, and/or sponges
Web Site: rvmustangs.org/ departments academic web sites science chemistry web site
All units for the year are listed. Each unit has labs, worksheets, practice exams, extra practice
that can be printed. We strongly urge you to take advantage of this extra practice. The element of the
week demonstration and questions will also be on this site.
Expectations:
Attendance must be excellent to succeed in chemistry. This class will have a strategy for learning every
class period. Each class builds on the previous class. If you must miss class, make up work as soon as
possible or you may have trouble with new material. You should attend the next access period. It is your
responsibility to find out what you have missed. All three of us teach the same thing on the same day. If
you know you are going to be absent, and you have an off block, try to attend a chemistry class, even if it is not
your regular teacher. Just check with us before the absence occurs.
This is a homework class. Practice is essential. If you are having trouble, please utilize the access
period or see your teacher to set up a time for extra help. Late homework is worth one-half credit if received by
the next class period; if received later than the next class period, it will be graded, but no credit will be issued.
Labs turned in after the due date will be docked 10% per school day late.
Any work made-up from excused or unexcused absences will be graded according to the district policy as stated
in the RVHS student planner.
GRADING:
25% of your grade is daily work – homework, worksheets, quizzes, materials, etc.
25% of your grade is laboratory work and reports. This includes formal and informal lab reports.
50% of your grade is EXAMS. There will be an exam at the end of each unit worth 100 points (approximately
one per month) and a cumulative final exam at the end of each semester worth 150 points.

GRADING SCALE:
90 – 100% A
80 – 89% B
70 – 79% C
60 – 69% D
0 – 59% F
Inappropriate use of electronic devices during the class period, including cell phones, graphing
calculators, ipods, etc., will result in confiscation by the teacher and returned at the end of the block on the first
offense. Any further offenses will result in confiscation of the device and turned over to an administrator.
SAFETY is mandatory in the chemistry lab. You will be working with materials that will require special
handling. Safety rules will be handed out and the safety contract MUST be signed by a parent or guardian and
the student before you will be allowed to participate in labs. HORSEPLAY of any kind will not be tolerated, no
matter how harmless it seems. If you display inappropriate behavior of any kind in the lab, you will be asked
to take your seat and receive a ZERO for that lab. Depending on the severity, it may also result in an office
referral.
Ralston Valley Honor Code: Challenge yourself to be a person others admire…be honest,
responsible, and respectful.
Be aware that we hold academic integrity in high regard. We wish to encourage you to do your own
work; your grades will suffer if you don’t. Any infraction relating to academic integrity will result in one-half credit
on the first offense and parent contact. Subsequent offenses will receive zero credit and parent contact. Issues
that relate to academic integrity include, but are not limited to:
- Copying any assignment in part or full
- Allowing any of your work to be copied
- Sharing any interpretation of data on a lab
- Using information about a test in advance to better your score (i.e. from another block or year)
In general, your work should be a product of your thoughts. Be cautious of “working together”. While discussion
among students is immensely important to learning and is encouraged by your teachers, the product of that
learning shall be your own. If you find yourself in a situation where you feel that sacrificing your academic
integrity is the only way for you to get the points or grade you need, come talk to us in advance. We find that
often, students engage in these practices due to lack of understanding, fear of failure, lack of preparation or any
combination. Whatever your reason for considering an academic integrity violation, we would like to help you
solve the real underlying issue.
Please have your parents/guardian read this introduction and sign the form. You will receive 10 points for
returning the signed form.
Good luck, work hard, have fun!
