Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of KCD, 

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure to report 

that 2008–09 was a period of continued achievement for 

Kentucky Country Day. Parents and students are finding the 

value of the Kentucky Country Day School education and 

experience. That we are providing the value sought by our 

constituents is reflected by the objective measures listed below. 

KCD is well on its way to be being a regionally and nationally-recognized 

independent school. Additionally, the school 

was well positioned and prepared to deal with the adverse 

economic and financial climate of the past year. 

Looking back over the 2008–2009 school year, we have 

seen continued development and growth in nearly every area of 

the school. Without losing sight of our most critical mission – 

academics – the board, administration, and faculty all strive 

to make a positive impact on each student’s time at KCD. 

As we approach the future, we do so with forethought 

and planning. The strategic planning process has once again led us to focus on the primary objectives and 

improvements we strive to achieve at KCD. The recently completed phase of the strategic plan addressed 

faculty, technology, athletics, scholarships, and facilities renewal. The next leg of the strategic plan will focus 

on four general categories: program quality, financial strength, environment and culture, and performance 

measures. We strive to know what families seek from an independent school and to adequately prepare 

our graduates to compete in the global economy. It is an exciting time for KCD and a great time to be a 

KCD graduate. 

With respect to a few of the past year’s accomplishments, please consider the following.

Ac a de m ic E xc e l l e nc e 

KCD is well known for fostering academic excellence, especially when it comes to preparing students for 

the demands and rigor of college and providing a strong foundation of the skills necessary to succeed in 

life. More specifically: 

• Our students’ performance on standardized achievement tests for college admission has remained 

substantially above national averages. In the prior year, KCD’s ACT scores were the highest of those 

reported by the Courier Journal. 

• This year, KCD’s composite ACT and SAT scores were among the highest reported by Business 

First. 

• In 2009, 72% of graduating seniors reported that they had been offered admission to their first choice 

college or university. 

• Our students continued to be admitted to the nation’s most selective colleges and universities, including 

(in 2009) Brown, Columbia, Duke, Emory, Georgetown, John Hopkins, Penn, Vassar, Vanderbilt, 

Washington, and Washington & Lee among others. 

• In 2009, four seniors (6% of the class) were recognized as National Merit Finalists –a percentage well 

above that of other area schools. 

• 44% of graduating seniors from the class of 2009 received offers of merit-based scholarship totaling 

nearly $2.5 million.

T h e at r e / Au di tor i u m & Cl a s sro om Project 

It has been ten years since any single significant addition was made to the campus. With significant development 

efforts already completed, the school commenced the public phase of its Expanding Horizons Capital 

Campaign. Construction was started on a 400-seat theatre/auditorium, additional classrooms, parking, 

roadway improvements, and cafeteria renovation as well as efforts to increase endowment funding. The 

construction is scheduled to be completed in fall of 2010. 

This project has involved the effort of so many, to whom we are all very thankful. All of those who 

have supported the project know that future KCD students will be able to have an improved experience in 

a wonderful setting that has long been the hallmark of KCD. 

R e c or d Enrol l m e n t 

Enrollment once again reached a record level in 2008–2009, making this the sixth consecutive year that the 

school has enjoyed continued demand and growth. Enrollment at the beginning of the school year was 918, 

compared to 902 at the same time last year. This continued growth in the student body is the best indicator 

that there is strong interest in KCD from new families and that existing families have a high level of 

satisfaction with the school. Additionally, it validates the work of the faculty, alumni, administration, and 

board to make KCD the independent school of choice in the metro Louisville area. 

Broa d Pa rt ic i pat ion a n d H igh Ac h i e v e m e n t 

One of the hallmarks of a KCD education continues to be an environment of broad participation. In 

2008–2009, 

• The Upper School offered twenty-two clubs and organizations, and the Middle School offered sixteen. 

In the Lower School, a record number of students were involved in intramural athletics, after school 

programs, and the Young Strings program. 

• It was a particularly successful year for our speech, chess, and academic teams, all of which achieved 

notable results in regional, state, and even national competitions. 

• Together, the Upper and Middle Schools offered a total of over sixty athletic teams with nearly 950 

participants – many playing on two or more teams. Athletic distinctions were earned by varsity 

baseball (All-A regional champions), boys’ varsity golf (All-A regional champions), and girls’ varsity 

lacrosse (state runners-up). In addition, league or tournament championships were won by the middle 

school boys’ basketball, lacrosse, and soccer teams. 

• Upper school productions of And Then They Came for Me: A Memory of Anne Frank and Beauty and 

the Beast along with the middle school productions of Radium Girls and Seussical continued to set a 

benchmark for dramatic quality and involved record numbers of participants and audience. 

E x pa n di ng Opp ort u n i t i e s 

As always, KCD remains committed to offering opportunities outside the confines of the classroom. Listed 

below are just a few of the notable programs introduced during the last school year: 

• In January of 2009, the Parent Association again sponsored a very well-received community lecture 

by a best-selling author. This year, Dr. Walsh discussed child development in his talk titled “Say Yes


to No.” Dr Walsh is a best-selling author and child psychologist as well as a prominent speaker and 

writer on issues of family life, parenting, and the impact of media on children. 

• At the conclusion of the 2009 school year, the KCD Internship Program provided numerous upper 

school students with summer internships locally as well as internationally. 

T h e F u t u r e 

As we move ahead, we will continue to build upon these successes and accomplishments. The school is 

thriving, and there are bold plans in place for the future. It is important for everyone to know that KCD 

offers an education and curriculum addressing the skills required in the twenty-first century. In order to 

enable each student to learn and succeed, it is important that KCD as an institution has the necessary attributes 

and characteristics to fulfill its mission, including:

• employing high-quality teachers; 

• maintaining excellence in academic programming; 

• preparing students academically for college, starting in the Lower School; 

• supporting a climate that encourages and says it’s okay to study and excel; 

• keeping students motivated and enthusiastic about learning; 

• using technology; 

• providing a safe environment; 

• preventing drug and alcohol abuse. 

As the past twelve months have taught us, these are exciting times. We will not lose our focus on the importance 

of preparing the students of KCD for success in an ever-changing world. 

The school is vibrant and thriving. Simply witness the full athletic fields, the busy parking lots, the 

outstanding quality of the faculty, and the accolades the students continue to receive for their success in 

drama, debate, the sciences, languages, and community service. It is truly an exciting juncture in the history 

of the school, and on behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, I thank you for your interest and support.

Dear KCD Parents, Alumni, and Friends, 

I would like to begin by thanking those listed in this report 

for their generous support: parents, grandparents, faculty and 

staff, past parents, alumni, corporations, foundations, and 

friends of KCD. Your thoughtful contributions, in addition 

to everything else you do for this institution, ensure that our 

students, faculty, and coaches have the resources they need 

to thrive. Simply put, Kentucky Country Day would not be 

the place it is without you. 

The theme of this annual report – Breaking New Ground – 

is a fitting phrase to describe the 2008–09 academic year. 

Obviously, we literally broke ground on our new theatre and 

assembly hall, which you are now watching take shape. In 

many other ways, though, our students and faculty were setting 

a new standard for KCD and breaking new ground in a 

different way. 

Last year, the Malone Family Foundation presented KCD 

with a $2 million grant to provide need-based scholarships for 

gifted and talented students. This grant represents a significant 

step forward in our ability to make a KCD education available to the best and brightest students from 

diverse economic backgrounds. I am particularly proud of this award because the Malone Foundation is 

extremely selective in presenting grants. In fact, only one school is selected in each state. Schools are selected 

on the basis of their academic excellence; the quality of their staff; the breadth and depth of opportunities 

and accommodations for gifted and talented students; strong AP and enrichment programs; attention to 

the individual student’s needs, interests, and talents; financial strength and stability; a commitment to 

financial aid; and an economically, culturally, ethnically, and socially diverse population. That KCD was 

selected to become a Malone partner school is a resounding testimonial to the quality of our faculty, the 

caliber of our academic program, and the strength of our community. 

I truly believe that when those who come after us look back on the history of this institution, they will 

point to 2008–09 as a crucial year in the development of Kentucky Country Day. We should all take great 

pride in that, but I am even more excited about what lies on our horizon.
