Winter driving
An avoidable, fatal accident
A 37-year-old business owner was delivering supplies
to a local hospital at 4:00 a.m. and was killed after he
rolled his vehicle off the highway on a sharp corner.
His overworn tires failed to grip the icy road.
Before the first blast of winter
Maintain your vehicle. Check your tire tread and
air pressure (including your spare). Install fresh
wiper blades and add antifreeze to both your
window washer and coolant system.
Carry these things in your vehicle
Chains, flashlight, first aid kit, reflective warning
devices, ice scraper, abrasive material (sand, kitty
litter), shovel, and blankets.
Practice chaining up
Learn how to install your chains before bad
weather strikes.
Safety Quiz
What do you do if you lose traction on
a slick road and begin to slide
A. Apply the brakes to slow
yourself down.
B. Oversteer to compensate for the
direction of the skid.
C. Take your foot off the accelerator.
D. All of the above.
Oregon winters are notorious
for dangerous driving conditions.
It’s better to be late than to get hurt.
Plan your trip
Check the weather and road. Choose main routes
and only drive when rested and alert, and when
road conditions are safe. Delay your trip if necessary.
Inform others
Share your itinerary with others and advise them
if you make any changes.
Winter driving demands extra caution
Foresight matters
Anticipate lane and speed changes several
seconds in advance. Allow extra space between
you and the car in front of you, so you have plenty
of time to brake.
Brake, steer, and accelerate smoothly
If you lose traction, gradually slow down. Don’t
slam on the brakes. Attempt to follow your
original direction. (Oversteering can result in
your vehicle losing control and crossing the road
from right to left before flipping.) Slow down
before going into a curve, down a hill, or reaching
potentially icy areas, such as bridges, concrete
highways, and shaded areas. Driving in this
manner will also improve your gas mileage.
Don’t drive blindly
If torrential rain, fog, or white-out conditions
compromise your driving ability, pull off the
pavement. Turn off your lights, turn on your flashers,
set the emergency brake, and take your foot off the
brake to be sure your taillights are not illuminated.
