OWNER & GOVERNOR
Charles B. Wang is the owner of the New York
Islanders of the National Hockey League and New
York Dragons of the Arena Football League, as
well as the creative force and master developer
of the Lighthouse, the transformation of the
Nassau Coliseum and surrounding 77 acres. He
is an entrepreneur primarily investing in new and
emerging technologies in the United States and
China. In 1976, he founded Computer Associates
and served as Chairman until November 2002.
Mr. Wang has been cited by Sports Illustrated
as one of the “Top 101 Influential Minorities in
Sports.” After acquiring a franchise that missed
the playoffs eight consecutive seasons, the New
York Islanders have been rejuvenated under Mr.
Wang. The Long Island business community has
embraced the Islanders. He has used the team’s
popularity to integrate it more heavily into the
community, creating the New York Islanders
Children’s Foundation, which works to enhance
the lives of children on Long Island. Under Mr.
Wang’s leadership, the New York Dragons have
also been a success story on and off the field.
Mr. Wang recently partnered with Scott
Rechler, of RexCorp., to develop a number of real
estate projects that will benefit Long Island for
decades to come, particularly: the Lighthouse
project will include a five-star hotel; condominiums;
an Athletic Complex featuring four ice rinks,
a basketball facility and state-of-the-art health
club that will serve as the Islanders’ practice
facility and also be open to the public; a Sports
Technology Center; open air plaza; and conference
center; and Old Plainview will be a transformation
of underutilized buildings and into a traditional
village combining townhouses, apartments,
offices, restaurants, a Hyatt hotel and
recreation space using “smart growth” concepts.
Mr. Wang has invested in a variety of emerging
technologies, most prominently in IPTV. He is
a founding investor in KyLinTV, which is breaking
new ground in entertainment for Chinese-language
audiences in the United States.
During his tenure, Mr. Wang built CA from a
single product company into a global enterprise
with a complete array of eBusiness solutions.
Under his leadership Fortune called CA one of
“Americas Most Admired Companies” as well as
“Best Company to Work for in America” and
Computer World named CA its “Best Place to
Work” five years running. In 1998 and 1999,
Industry Week also identified CA as one of the
“100 Best Managed Companies in the World.”
In addition, he has his own Foundation and is
extremely active in supporting charitable causes
such as The Smile Train and the National Center
for Missing and Exploited Children.
Born in Shanghai, China in August 1944, Mr.
Wang moved to the United States with his family
in 1952. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree
in mathematics from Queens College and began
his computer career at Columbia University’s
Riverside Research Institute as a programming
trainee. He is the author of TECHNOVISION II:
Mastering Technology and the Internet, which
educates decision makers about taking advantage
of the eBusiness revolution.
