On Day 2, visit Tiananmen Square and explore the Forbidden City. Next day head out of the city and on to the spectacular Great Wall of China for a walk on this immense structure. On Day 4, wander the narrow streets of Beijing’s hutongs and later visit the tranquil Summer Palace, a world away from the hectic city vibe. After dinner at a local restaurant, board the overnight train to Xi’an. (3B, 2L, D) Xi’an / Shanghai Enjoy breakfast in Xi’an and then a tour of the world-famous Terracotta Warriors. On Day 6, cycle the ancient Xi’an City Wall, visit the Muslim Quarter and shop for local specialities. Catch a flight to Shanghai this afternoon and soak up the city views from the 88th floor of the Jin Mao Tower. On Day 7, visit the temples, shops, eat or just take time to chill. Stroll along the Bund, Shanghai’s most famous promenade and marvel at the impressive architecture. (3B, L, D) Yangshuo Catch a flight to Guilin this morning and head to Yangshuo. Explore the night markets of one of the ‘quietest’ bustling towns in China. On Day 9, try a local cooking class or just take Yangshuo at your own pace. Tonight, choose to watch the Liu Sanjie Impressions light show, a stunning performance set amongst the local mountains. (2B) Yangshuo / Hong Kong Ride through the magical scenery of the Guilin Province before you catch a flight to the bright lights of Hong Kong. On Day 11, gawk at the views over this exciting city from Victoria Peak, visit the fishing village of Aberdeen and shop for souvenirs at Stanley Markets. Enjoy a final dinner before your trip ends on Day 12. (3B, D) DAY 01 02 03-05 06-07 08 09-11 12-13 14 ITINERARY Beijing Arrive into the bright oriental lights of Beijing at any time today. Beijing Explore some of the city’s greatest sites including Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Great Wall / Rural Volunteering Project Venture into the countryside to experience the grandeur of the Great Wall of China. Volunteer with young people with learning difficulties at a rural farm and help to plant and harvest crops. Xi’an Visit one of China’s greatest treasures - the Terracotta Warriors. You will also have the option to cycle the ancient city walls too. Chengdu Time to yourself - indulge in Sichuan cuisine or enjoy an orientation walk. Classical music lovers could always catch a Sichuan Opera. Volunteer Experience Bifengxia Panda Breeding Centre The centre is designed to provide the ideal breeding environment for its pandas. Help care for them, clean their enclosures and gather behavioural data. On completion of your time volunteering at the centre, take a fast overnight train to Shanghai. Shanghai Get to know eclectic downtown Shanghai - cruise the Bund, check out the classy bars and generally make yourself at home. Shanghai Sadly your trip ends this morning, goodbye Shanghai. DAY 01 02-05 06-07 08-09 10 11-12 13-15 ITINERARY Hong Kong An early start to kick off your 25-day adventure; today enjoy an optional guided hike up Victoria Peak for incredible views over the city and harbour below. In the afternoon, cross the border into China before taking a night bus to Yangshou. Yangshuo Wake up in rural Yangshuo, one of the most popular backpacking destinations in China and famed for its stunning karst scenery. This afternoon’s activities include rafting down the Li River on bamboo rafts whilst the sun sets over the karst peaks. There are no shortage of optional activities to fill your three days here, you can visit mud-baths in underground caves, enjoy a guided bike tour to swimming spots and lookouts, sample snake liquor or take a Chinese cooking class! On the final morning, rise early to see an incredible sunrise over the karst peaks from an ancient pagoda before taking the night train to Chengdu. Chengdu Arrive in Chengdu and join an optional tour to the world’s largest statue of Buddha at Leshan before enjoying a traditional Sichuan Hotpot that night. In the morning visit the Panda Breeding Research Centre arriving in time to watch them tuck into breakfast. This evening, board the night train to Xian. Xian After arriving in Xian, visit another unmissable and free attraction; the Terracotta Warriors. In the evening you have the chance help out at a soup kitchen for Xi’an’s homeless people. On Day 9, enjoy an independent walking tour of the Muslim quarter which finishes with a visit to the Great Mosque, or join an optional bike tour around the ancient city walls. Tonight, don’t miss the fountain and light show before experiencing a night out Chinese style; yes, there will be Karaoke, or KTV as it is known here. QingLing Mountains This morning you’ll head deep into the heart of the QingLing mountains, stopping enroute for tubing and sunbathing by a river. Enjoy hikes into the mountains visiting a series of waterfalls and in the evening enjoy a meal of organic food from the farm. Shaolin An early morning transfer back to Xian where you’ll take the train and then bus to Dengfeng where you’ll visit an orphanage in the evening. All the children at the orphanage are trained in Kung Fu and will put on a performance for you. Its then your turn to teach the children games and help them practice their English. The Kung Fu teacher who trained in the Shaolin Monastery will teach you the basics in an optional lesson. On Day 12, rise early to visit the Shaolin Temple before boarding the night train to Beijing. Beijing / Great Wall of China After arriving in Beijing you’re off to The Great Wall of China! You visit a deserted part of the wall where you can hike along as the sun sets without any other tourists around before pitching your tent for a night of camping on the wall. In the morning wake for what will be one of the most memorable sunrises of your life and then head back to Beijing.
