Message from President of SEAGIG
As the first World Glaucoma Day took place on March 6, 2008 and SEAGIG is a member of the World
Glaucoma Association whose current President is Founding President of SEAGIG we cannot overstress the
pressing need for us to support this laudable initiative even as we prepare to attend a well designed and
prepared scientific program by the Organizing Committee of SEAGIG and AACGC.
We are indeed challenged to treat well and eagerly support our glaucoma patients including their families.
We are also tasked to reach out to the innumerable undiagnosed patients who deserve early diagnosis and
treatment to prevent glaucoma morbidity and blindness.
We therefore look forward to visiting Seoul, Korea - really the soul of Asia, as we in friendship and
camaraderie unite and put up a solid medical front against glaucoma truly a public health concern specially
in Asia - home to most of us.
Even as we congratulate our Korean colleagues on their excellent program we also join all our other Asia
Pacific colleagues be they from developed or evolving nations to rally behind the call to serve well our
glaucoma patients by learning the best from past researches and studies during our 5th biennial meeting.
Warm greetings and best wishes to all!
Message from President of AACGC
Dear Colleagues,
As President of the Asian Angle-Closure Glaucoma Club (AACGC), it is my great pleasure and honor to
invite you to the 6th Meeting of Asian Angle-Closure Glaucoma Club, to be held in conjunction with the 5th
Congress of SEAGIG at the Lotte Hotel Seoul, in Korea from September 25-27, 2008.
The 6th Meeting in Seoul was made possible thanks to the passion and dedication of all its members
whom I’d like to thank once again, including Professors Dong Ho Youn, Yoshiaki Kitazawa, and Por Tying
Hung who never hesitated to give their warm advice and support to the Club, Professors Prin
Rojanapongpun (Thailand), Ningli Wang (China), Kwou-Yeung Wu and Tsing-Hong Wang (Taiwan), and
Tetsuya Yamamoto (Japan) who graciously hosted the previous meetings in their countries, and Professors
Yong Yeon Kim and Ki Ho Park who helped to prepare the upcoming Meeting in Seoul.
I feel especially privileged and rewarded to have been able to witness the boundless enthusiasm and
sense of mission of our members through the AACGC meetings, and form friendships with colleagues from
many different countries. In particular, I am especially proud of the united efforts made by all the members
of AACGC at the Gifu Meeting in September 2007, which resulted in the publishing of the “Angle-Closure
Glaucoma” textbook (Kugler Publications). I would like to take this opportunity to thank once again all the
AACGC members for their participation in the book.
The upcoming Seoul Meeting will be an occasion to look back on the accomplishments of the AACGC since
its launch, as well as establish an upgraded system befitting the new era we are entering. I hope that the
Meeting will help to further enlarge the academic information exchange infrastructure in Asia, the “Asian
Glaucoma Road,” and instill a renewed sense of mission and hope to our members to leave behind a
noteworthy academic heritage for the scholars who will follow us.
Korea will be covered in beautiful autumnal hues in September. I sincerely hope that all our members will
be able to gather together in the historically and culturally rich city of Seoul at that time, capital of our
nation since 600 years, to give thanks to our friendship and all that has come to fruition, and celebrate new
accomplishments.
Wishing all our members’ health and happiness.
The South East Asia Glaucoma Interest Group (SEAGIG) was established to facilitate
contact between glaucoma specialists in the region, to encourage collaborative
research and service projects, to increase the opportunities for exchange of skills and
knowledge in this rapidly advancing field, and to assist comprehensive
ophthalmological colleagues and other eye care workers (whether medically trained
or not) to be up to date with advances in all aspects of glaucoma diagnosis and
management. (http://seagig.org)
Angle-closure glaucoma is prevalent in Asia and it is estimated that a half of the
glaucoma patients might have primary angle-closure glaucoma. The aim of the Asian
Angle-Closure Glaucoma Club (AACGC) is to establish a scientific network for the
Asian glaucomatologists who are interested in angle-closure glaucoma in exchange
of knowledge about angle-closure glaucoma. (http://www.aacgc.org)
