教 宗 復 活 節 的 訊 息<br />

“Cantemus Domino, gloriose enim magnificatus est.”<br />

「 我 們 要 歌 頌 上 主 , 因 為 祂 大 獲 全 勝 。」<br />

( 復 活 節 日 課 裡 的 誦 讀 對 經 一 )<br />

愛 的 弟 兄 姊 妹 們 !<br />

親<br />

藉 著 這 禮 儀 的 句 子 ,<br />

我 向 你 們 宣 告 復 活 節 - 以 上<br />

的 這 句 話 , 使 以 色 列 子 民 在<br />

過 了 紅 海 後 所 唱 的 歷 久 讚 美<br />

歌 , 迴 響 不 停 。 這 禮 儀 的 句<br />

子 陳 述 出 谷 紀 裡 的 事 跡 ( 參<br />

看 谷 15 :19-21): 當 梅 瑟 和 亞<br />

郎 的 姐 妹 - 女 先 知 米 黎 盎 和<br />

其 他 婦 女 看 到 埃 及 人 淹 沒 在<br />

水 裡 時 , 她 們 便 載 歌 載 舞 ,<br />

引 吭 高 歌 唱 著 :「 你 們 應 歌<br />

頌 上 主 , 因 祂 獲 得 全 勝 , 將<br />

馬 和 騎 士 投 入 海 中 。」 世 界<br />

各 地 的 基 督 信 徒 在 復 活 前 夕<br />

時 , 重 唱 這 詩 歌 和 一 個 解 釋<br />

這 詩 歌 的 特 別 祈 禱 經 文 ; 在<br />

復 活 節 光 輝 的 照 耀 之 下 , 我<br />

們 現 在 喜 悅 地 將 這 祈 禱 經 文<br />

變 為 是 我 們 自 己 的 :「 天<br />

主 , 祢 昔 日 所 行 的 奇 跡 , 今<br />

日 仍 閃 爍 著 光 輝 : 正 如 祢 昔<br />

日 曾 以 大 能 拯 救 了 一 個 被 迫<br />

害 的 民 族 , 現 在 祢 願 以 再 生<br />

的 洗 禮 拯 救 整 個 人 類 ; 求 祢<br />

使 天 下 萬 民 , 都 能 成 為 亞<br />

巴 郎 的 子 孫 和 祢 特 選 的 子<br />

民 。」<br />

福 音 啟 示 了 給 我 們 知 道 一 些<br />

舊 約 人 物 的 最 終 使 命 : 耶 穌<br />

藉 著 祂 的 聖 死 與 復 活 將 人 類<br />

從 最 深 徹 的 奴 役 - 那 罪 惡<br />

的 奴 役 中 解 救 出 來 , 祂 打 開<br />

了 前 往 福 地 的 道 路 - 那 前<br />

往 天 國 、 前 往 普 世 正 義 的 國<br />

度 、 前 往 平 安 與 愛 的 國 度 的<br />

道 路 。 這 「 出 谷 紀 」 首 先 是<br />

來 臨 到 人 的 心 中 , 是 一 個 在<br />

聖 神 中 的 再 生 、 是 基 督 藉 著<br />

逾 越 奧 跡 帶 來 的 聖 洗 聖 事 所<br />

產 生 的 效 果 。 舊 人 讓 位 給 新<br />

人 ; 以 往 的 生 活 已 拋 諸 腦<br />

後 , 我 們 可 以 在 嶄 新 的 生 命<br />

教 宗 復 活 節 的 訊 息<br />

中 前 進 ( 參 看 羅 6:4)。 然<br />

而 , 那 靈 修 上 的 「 出 谷 紀 」<br />

只 是 一 個 全 面 性 的 解 救 的 開<br />

端 , 但 卻 能 更 新 人 生 的 每 一<br />

個 範 圍 , 個 人 的 和 團 體 的 。<br />

是 的 , 弟 兄 們 , 逾 越 節 是 人<br />

類 真 正 的 救 恩 ! 如 果 基 督 -<br />

天 主 的 羔 羊 沒 有 為 我 們 傾 流<br />

祂 的 寶 血 的 話 , 我 們 就 沒 有<br />

希 望 , 我 們 和 這 世 界 的 命 運<br />

只 會 是 死 亡 , 定 數 難 逃 。 然<br />

而 , 逾 越 節 卻 扭 轉 了 乾 坤 :<br />

基 督 的 復 活 是 一 個 嶄 新 的 創<br />

造 , 像 一 條 嫁 接 用 的 嫩 枝<br />

能 使 整 棵 植 物 重 獲 生 氣 。 基<br />

督 的 復 活 是 一 個 徹 底 改 變 了<br />

歷 史 方 向 的 事 跡 , 使 人 類 歷<br />

史 一 勞 永 逸 地 日 趨 完 善 、 轉<br />

向 生 命 、 轉 向 寬 恕 。 我 們 恢<br />

復 自 由 了 , 我 們 得 救 了 ! 這<br />

是 為 什 麼 在 我 們 的 心 坎 中 最<br />

深 處 , 我 們 歡 唱 :「 我 們 要<br />

歌 頌 上 主 , 因 為 祂 大 獲 全<br />

勝 。」<br />

天 主 的 子 民 , 在 從 洗 禮 的 水<br />

中 出 來 之 後 , 被 邀 請 在 世 界<br />

各 地 為 這 救 恩 作 見 證 , 去 結<br />

出 逾 越 節 的 果 實 , 帶 給 所 有<br />

的 人 - 這 果 實 就 是 一 種 嶄<br />

新 的 生 命 , 擺 脫 罪 惡 , 而 且<br />

恢 復 生 命 原 有 的 美 麗 、 慈 善<br />

和 真 實 。 在 過 去 的 兩 千 年 歷<br />

史 中 , 基 督 信 徒 , 特 別 是 那<br />

些 聖 人 , 一 直 持 續 不 斷 地 ,<br />

以 他 們 把 逾 越 節 活 出 來 的 經<br />

驗 , 使 歷 史 結 果 櫐 櫐 。 教 會<br />

是 出 谷 的 子 民 , 因 為 她 不 斷<br />

地 活 出 逾 越 奧 跡 , 並 且 時 時<br />

處 處 散 播 她 更 新 的 力 量 。 同<br />

樣 地 , 在 我 們 的 日 子 裡 , 人<br />

類 需 要 「 出 谷 」, 但 並 非 不<br />

是 一 個 表 面 上 的 化 裝 , 而 是<br />

一 個 靈 修 和 道 德 上 的 悔 改 。<br />

人 類 需 要 來 自 福 音 的 救 恩 ,<br />

為 的 是 要 能 脫 離 一 個 深 切 的<br />

危 機 - 這 危 機 要 求 人 作 洗 心<br />

革 面 般 的 改 變 , 要 從 良 心 開<br />

始 。<br />

我 祈 求 主 耶 穌 , 希 望 在 中<br />

東 , 尤 其 是 在 被 祂 的 死 亡 和<br />

復 活 聖 化 過 的 土 地 , 那 裡 的<br />

人 民 能 從 戰 爭 和 暴 力 中 能 實<br />

踐 一 個 真 正 及 圓 滿 的 「 出<br />

谷 」, 走 向 和 平 與 和 睦 相<br />

處 。 願 復 活 的 主 對 那 些 基 督<br />

信 仰 團 體 , 特 別 是 在 依 拉<br />

克 , 重 說 祂 向 那 些 在 晚 餐 廳<br />

的 宗 徒 們 所 說 出 充 滿 安 慰 和<br />

鼓 勵 的 這 句 話 :「 願 平 安 與<br />

你 們 同 在 !」( 若 <strong>20</strong>:21)<br />

對 於 那 些 正 在 經 歷 一 些 危 險<br />

販 毒 罪 案 的 拉 丁 美 洲 及 加 勒<br />

比 海 的 國 家 , 願 基 督 的 逾 越<br />

能 彰 顯 出 和 平 共 處 和 對 公 益<br />

的 尊 重 。 願 遭 受 地 震 蹂 躪 海<br />

地 的 人 民 能 實 踐 一 個 脫 離 哀<br />

傷 及 絕 望 的 「 出 谷 」, 往 嶄<br />

新 的 希 望 前 進 , 蒙 受 國 際 精<br />

誠 團 結 的 支 持 。 願 那 些 心 愛<br />

的 智 利 的 人 民 , 他 們 受 到 嚴<br />

重 的 災 難 打 擊 , 能 堅 毅 不 撓<br />

地 面 對 重 建 的 工 程 。<br />

願 在 非 洲 當 地 的 人 民 能 藉 著<br />

耶 穌 復 活 的 大 能 終 止 那 些 一<br />

直 在 制 造 破 壞 和 痛 苦 的 紛<br />

爭 , 並 且 能 達 到 那 保 證 國 家<br />

發 展 的 和 平 與 和 好 。 我 特 別<br />

將 剛 果 民 主 共 和 國 、 幾 內 亞<br />

和 奈 及 利 亞 托 付 給 上 主 。<br />

願 復 活 的 上 主 扶 助 那 些 因 信<br />

仰 而 遭 受 迫 害 , 甚 至 被 殺 的<br />

基 督 信 徒 , 正 如 在 巴 基 斯<br />

坦 。 那 些 被 恐 怖 主 義 , 被 階<br />

級 或 宗 教 歧 視 折 磨 的 國 家 民<br />

族 , 願 復 活 的 上 主 賜 給 他 們<br />

力 量 去 尋 找 溝 通 與 和 平 相 處<br />

的 途 徑 。 願 基 督 逾 越 的 光 輝<br />

及 力 量 接 觸 到 所 有 國 家 的 領<br />

袖 , 好 使 財 務 及 經 濟 的 運 作<br />

終 於 能 按 照 真 理 、 正 義 和 互<br />

助 的 準 則 進 行 。 願 基 督 復 活<br />

救 恩 的 大 能 充 滿 整 個 人 類 ,<br />

好 使 人 類 能 克 服 一 個 到 處 散<br />

播 的 「 死 亡 文 化 」 所 帶 來 的<br />

多 種 悲 慘 後 果 , 而 能 建 立 一<br />

個 愛 與 真 理 的 將 來 , 使 每 個<br />

生 命 都 被 尊 重 和 接 納 。<br />

親 愛 的 弟 兄 姊 妹 們 ! 逾 越 節<br />

並 不 做 出 什 麼 把 戲 。 正 如 以<br />

色 列 子 民 過 了 紅 海 之 後 便 身<br />

處 在 沙 漠 一 樣 , 教 會 也 是 ,<br />

在 復 活 節 過 後 , 教 會 經 常 都<br />

要 面 對 歷 史 , 連 同 歷 史 上 的<br />

喜 悅 及 希 望 、 悲 痛 與 焦 慮 。<br />

但 這 歷 史 是 被 轉 變 的 了 , 被<br />

一 個 新 而 永 久 的 盟 約 顯 示 出<br />

來 , 是 真 的 向 未 來 開 放 。 為<br />

此 , 我 們 既 然 在 希 望 中 得<br />

救 , 讓 我 們 繼 續 我 們 朝 聖 的<br />

旅 途 , 在 我 們 心 中 帶 著 這 歷<br />

久 又 永 遠 嶄 新 的 詩 歌 :「 我<br />

們 要 歌 頌 上 主 , 因 為 祂 大 獲<br />

於 第 廿 五 屆 世 界 青 年 日<br />

「 善 師 , 為 承 受 永 生 , 我 該 做 什 麼 」( 谷 十 17)<br />

愛 的 朋 友 們 ,<br />

親<br />

今 年 我 們 慶 祝 世 界 青 年<br />

日 創 立 第 二 十 五 周 年 , 可 敬<br />

的 先 教 宗 若 望 保 祿 二 世 期 望<br />

全 世 界 的 青 年 信 友 能 藉 此 機<br />

會 相 聚 。 這 真 是 個 充 滿 先 知<br />

性 的 創 舉 , 並 結 出 豐 碩 的 果<br />

實 , 讓 新 一 代 的 基 督 徒 彼 此<br />

認 識 , 一 起 聆 聽 天 主 聖 言 ,<br />

發 現 教 會 之 美 , 活 出 那 曾 經<br />

帶 領 著 無 數 青 年 全 然 委 身 於<br />

主 的 堅 定 信 德 經 驗 。<br />

下 一 次 全 球 性 世 界 青 年 聚 會<br />

將 於 <strong>20</strong>11 年 在 馬 德 里 舉 行 , 第<br />

二 十 五 屆 世 界 青 年 日 代 表 了<br />

往 前 走 的 一 步 , 屆 時 我 希 望<br />

你 們 能 踴 躍 參 予 這 充 滿 恩 寵<br />

的 活 動 。<br />

為 了 幫 助 我 們 準 備 這 慶 日 ,<br />

我 想 根 據 今 年 的 主 題 「 善<br />

師 , 為 承 受 永 生 , 我 該 做 什<br />

麼 」( 谷 十 17) 來 提 供 你 們 幾<br />

個 反 省 題 目 - 那 是 從 耶 穌 與<br />

那 位 富 貴 少 年 相 遇 的 福 音 章<br />

節 中 節 選 出 來 的 ,1985 年 教 宗<br />

若 望 保 祿 二 世 寫 給 年 青 人 一<br />

封 極 美 的 信 就 是 使 用 這 個 主<br />

題 。<br />

一 、 耶 穌 與 一 位 年 青 人 相 遇<br />

聖 史 馬 爾 谷 這 樣 記 載 : 正 在<br />

耶 穌 出 來 行 路 時 , 跑 來 了 一<br />

個 人 , 跪 在 他 面 前 , 問 他<br />

說 :「 善 師 , 為 承 受 永 生 ,<br />

我 該 做 什 麼 」 耶 穌 對 他<br />

說 :「 你 為 什 麼 稱 我 善 除<br />

了 天 主 一 個 外 , 沒 有 誰 是 善<br />

的 。 誡 命 你 都 知 道 : 不 可 殺<br />

人 , 不 可 奸 淫 , 不 可 偷 盜 ,<br />

不 可 做 假 見 證 , 不 可 欺 詐 ,<br />

應 孝 敬 你 的 父 母 。」 他 回<br />

答 耶 穌 說 :「 師 傅 ! 這 一 切<br />

我 從 小 就 都 遵 守 了 。」 耶<br />

穌 定 睛 看 他 , 就 喜 愛 他 , 對<br />

他 說 :「 你 還 缺 少 一 樣 : 你<br />

去 , 變 賣 你 所 有 的 一 切 , 施<br />

捨 給 窮 人 , 你 必 有 寶 藏 在 天<br />

上 ; 然 後 來 , 背 著 十 字 架 ,<br />

跟 隨 我 !」 因 了 這 話 , 那 人 就<br />

面 帶 愁 容 , 憂 鬱 地 走 了 , 因<br />

為 他 有 許 多 產 業 。( 谷 十 17-22)<br />

這 段 福 音 明 白 表 達 出 耶 穌 對<br />

年 青 人 、 對 你 們 每 一 位 、 對<br />

你 們 所 期 待 的 、 你 們 所 盼 望<br />

的 有 著 的 極 大 關 注 , 也 顯 示<br />

出 祂 是 多 麼 渴 望 與 你 們 每 一<br />

位 相 遇 , 與 你 們 個 別 開 啟 對<br />

話 。 事 實 上 , 基 督 停 下 他 的<br />

腳 步 是 為 了 回 答 這 位 年 青 人<br />

的 提 問 。 祂 定 睛 注 視 這 年 青<br />

人 , 這 年 青 人 多 麼 熱 切 渴 望<br />

與 這 位 「 善 師 」 談 話 , 為 了<br />

向 祂 學 習 生 命 之 道 。 我 的 前<br />

任 ( 教 宗 ) 也 曾 經 用 這 段 福<br />

音 勉 勵 你 們 每 一 位 「 與 基 督<br />

開 展 屬 於 自 己 的 對 話 : 這<br />

對 話 對 年 青 人 既 基 本 又 重<br />

要 。」(《 給 青 年 的 信 》2)<br />

二 、 耶 穌 定 睛 看 他 , 就 喜<br />

愛 他<br />

在 福 音 中 , 聖 史 馬 爾 谷 強 調<br />

「 耶 穌 定 睛 看 他 , 就 喜 愛<br />

他 」( 谷 十 21) 上 主 的 凝 視 是<br />

這 很 特 殊 見 面 的 核 心 , 也 是<br />

全 體 基 督 徒 的 經 驗 。 其 實 ,<br />

基 督 信 仰 首 先 並 不 是 一 套 道<br />

德 規 範 , 而 是 體 驗 到 耶 穌 基<br />

督 - 祂 個 別 地 愛 著 我 們 每<br />

一 個 人 的 , 無 論 老 或 少 、 貧<br />

或 富 ; 就 連 我 們 背 離 他 的 時<br />

候 , 他 也 愛 我 們 。<br />

當 教 宗 若 望 保 祿 二 世 談 到 福<br />

音 的 這 一 段 時 , 他 對 你 們 青<br />

年 人 說 :「 我 希 望 你 們 也 能<br />

經 驗 到 這 凝 視 ! 我 希 望 你 們<br />

經 驗 到 基 督 滿 懷 著 愛 意 看 著<br />

你 !」(《 給 青 年 的 信 》7) -<br />

這 份 愛 在 十 字 架 上 如 此 充 分<br />

及 完 整 的 呈 現 , 並 讓 聖 保 祿<br />

驚 喜 的 寫 下 :「 祂 愛 了 我 ,<br />

且 為 我 捨 棄 了 自 己 。」( 迦 二<br />

<strong>20</strong>) 。 教 宗 若 望 保 祿 二 世 又 寫<br />

道 :「 天 父 總 是 在 祂 愛 子 內<br />

愛 我 們 、 基 督 總 是 愛 著 我 們<br />

每 個 人 , 這 意 識 是 所 有 人 類<br />

生 存 的 穩 固 基 礎 。」(《 給 青<br />

年 的 信 》7) , 而 且 使 我 們 能<br />

夠 戰 勝 所 有 的 考 驗 : 在 我 們<br />

察 覺 我 們 罪 惡 的 時 候 、 在 痛<br />

苦 與 沮 喪 中 。<br />

在 這 份 愛 內 , 我 們 找 到 所 有<br />

基 督 徒 生 活 的 泉 源 和 福 傳 最<br />

基 本 的 理 由 : 如 果 我 們 真 正<br />

的 與 基 督 相 遇 過 , 我 們 就 會<br />

不 由 自 主 的 為 基 督 向 那 些 尚<br />

未 與 祂 的 凝 視 相 遇 的 人 做 見<br />

證 !<br />

三 、 發 現 生 命 的 計 畫<br />

我 們 在 福 音 中 的 那 位 年 青 人<br />

身 上 可 以 看 到 他 很 像 你 們 每<br />

個 人 。 你 們 有 豐 富 的 才 華 、<br />

活 力 、 夢 想 與 希 望 , 這 些 都<br />

是 你 們 所 擁 有 的 豐 沛 資 源 !<br />

你 們 的 年 齡 本 身 就 是 一 大 財<br />

富 , 不 只 為 你 們 自 己 而 言 ,<br />

為 別 人 也 是 , 特 別 為 教 會 、<br />

為 全 世 界 。<br />

這 富 貴 少 年 問 耶 穌 :「 我 該<br />

做 什 麼 」 你 們 現 在 正 經 歷<br />

的 生 命 階 段 是 個 發 現 時 期 :<br />

發 現 天 主 在 你 們 和 你 們 的 責<br />

任 上 所 傾 注 的 恩 寵 。 這 也 是<br />

你 們 要 為 你 們 的 人 生 要 做 些<br />

重 要 決 定 的 時 期 。 所 以 這 是<br />

你 們 要 想 想 自 己 生 命 真 正 意<br />

義 的 時 候 :「 我 滿 意 我 的 生<br />

活 嗎 有 缺 什 麼 嗎 」<br />

就 像 福 音 中 的 那 位 年 青 人 ,<br />

或 許 你 們 身 處 在 不 確 定 、 焦<br />

慮 或 痛 苦 的 景 況 中 , 使 你 們<br />

追 求 一 個 不 是 一 般 的 人 生 。<br />

使 得 你 們 自 問 : 什 麼 構 成 成<br />

功 的 生 命 我 該 做 什 麼 什<br />

麼 該 是 我 生 命 的 計 畫 「 我<br />

該 為 我 的 生 命 做 什 麼 , 好 使<br />

我 的 生 命 獲 得 圓 滿 的 價 值 與<br />

意 義 」(《 給 青 年 的 信 》3)<br />

你 們 別 害 怕 問 自 己 這 些 問<br />

題 ! 但 這 些 問 題 不 但 不 會 困<br />

擾 你 們 , 反 而 會 表 達 出 你 們<br />

的 胸 懷 大 志 。 所 以 要 聆 聽 你<br />

們 的 心 聲 。 這 些 問 題 等 待 著<br />

一 些 並 非 是 膚 淺 的 答 案 , 而<br />

是 一 些 能 夠 滿 足 你 們 對 生 活<br />

與 幸 福 真 正 渴 望 的 答 覆 。<br />

為 了 要 發 現 那 能 讓 你 真 正 幸<br />

福 快 樂 的 生 命 計 畫 , 你 們 要<br />

開 始 聆 聽 天 主 ! 祂 對 你 們 每<br />

一 位 都 有 一 個 愛 的 計 畫 。 你<br />

可 以 自 信 的 問 祂 :「 上 主 !<br />

是 造 物 主 、 是 父 親 , 對 我 生<br />

命 的 計 畫 是 什 麼 的 旨 意 是<br />

什 麼 我 渴 望 要 完 成 它 。」<br />

你 們 放 心 , 祂 一 定 會 回 答 你<br />

們 的 。 你 們 別 害 怕 祂 的 答<br />

案 !「 因 為 天 主 比 我 們 的 心<br />

大 並 知 道 一 切 !」( 若 壹 三<br />

<strong>20</strong>)<br />

四 、 來 , 跟 隨 我 !<br />

耶 穌 邀 請 這 位 富 貴 少 年 做 得<br />

更 多 , 不 只 是 滿 足 他 的 渴 望<br />

與 個 人 的 計 畫 , 祂 對 他 說 :<br />

「 來 , 跟 隨 我 !」 基 督 徒 的<br />

聖 召 來 自 於 上 主 滿 溢 愛 情 的<br />

謙 遜 順 服 的 跟 隨 被 釘 且 復 活<br />

的 基 督 。 他 們 的 成 全 , 在 信<br />

仰 的 邏 輯 裡 很 多 時 候 是 人 類<br />

無 法 理 解 的 , 不 再 自 我 中<br />

心 , 反 其 道 而 行 , 按 著 福 音<br />

親 愛 的 朋 友 們 , 你 們 若 追 隨<br />

眾 多 基 督 門 徒 們 的 榜 樣 , 你<br />

們 也 能 喜 樂 的 接 受 祂 的 邀 請<br />

去 跟 隨 祂 , 在 這 世 界 上 積 極<br />

的 生 活 , 並 且 果 實 櫐 櫐 。 透<br />

過 洗 禮 , 祂 召 叫 我 們 每 一 個<br />

人 以 具 體 的 行 動 跟 隨 祂 、 愛<br />

祂 在 萬 有 之 上 , 並 且 在 我 們<br />

的 兄 弟 姊 妹 身 上 服 事 祂 。 但<br />

遺 憾 的 , 這 位 富 貴 少 年 並 沒<br />

有 接 受 耶 穌 的 邀 請 , 他 面 帶<br />

愁 容 的 走 了 。 他 沒 有 找 到 拋<br />

棄 物 質 財 富 的 勇 氣 去 發 掘 耶<br />

穌 所 提 得 更 大 的 好 處 。<br />

福 音 中 這 位 富 貴 少 年 的 憂<br />

傷 , 就 是 當 每 一 個 人 沒 有 勇<br />

氣 跟 隨 基 督 、 作 正 確 的 決 定<br />

時 在 心 中 所 產 生 的 憂 傷 。 但<br />

回 應 基 督 永 遠 不 嫌 遲 !<br />

耶 穌 從 不 厭 煩 的 一 再 以 愛 情<br />

回 顧 我 們 和 召 喚 我 們 作 祂 的<br />

門 徒 ; 但 祂 向 一 些 人 建 議 作<br />

更 基 本 的 選 擇 。 在 此 司 鐸 年<br />

之 際 , 我 想 鼓 勵 年 青 男 子 想<br />

想 是 否 天 主 邀 請 他 們 接 受 更<br />

大 的 恩 寵 , 走 上 司 鐸 職 務 的<br />

道 路 , 並 且 以 慷 慨 與 熱 忱 之<br />

心 接 受 這 份 特 別 的 愛 的 記<br />

號 , 在 神 父 或 神 師 的 協 助 下<br />

進 行 所 需 的 分 辨 。 親 愛 的 年<br />

青 男 女 , 你 們 千 萬 不 要 害<br />

怕 , 如 果 天 主 召 叫 你 過 修 道<br />

生 活 、 隱 修 生 活 或 傳 教 生<br />

活 , 或 是 特 別 的 奉 獻 生 活 :<br />

祂 必 會 賜 給 那 些 勇 敢 回 應 祂<br />

的 人 深 刻 的 喜 樂 !<br />

我 也 邀 請 那 些 被 召 叫 度 婚 姻<br />

生 活 的 人 士 , 以 信 德 接 受 這<br />

聖 召 , 同 時 努 力 建 立 穩 固 的<br />

基 礎 , 好 能 活 出 這 份 偉 大 的<br />

愛 、 保 持 忠 心 , 並 且 將 生 命<br />

視 為 禮 物 來 迎 接 - 此 為 社 會<br />

與 教 會 的 財 富 與 恩 寵 。<br />

五 、 以 永 生 為 目 標<br />

「 為 承 受 永 生 , 我 該 做 什<br />

麼 」 福 音 中 這 位 年 青 人 所<br />

問 的 這 個 問 題 , 看 起 來 與 現<br />

今 大 部 分 青 年 所 關 注 的 截 然<br />

不 同 。 先 教 宗 這 樣 說 過 :<br />

「 我 們 的 這 個 世 代 , 不 是 完<br />

全 被 世 界 與 短 暫 進 步 所 充 滿<br />

嗎 」(《 給 青 年 的 信 》5)<br />

但 是 , 當 在 我 們 生 命 中 一 些<br />

痛 苦 時 刻 , 當 我 們 面 臨 失 去<br />

親 人 或 經 歷 失 敗 時 ,「 永<br />

生 」 這 問 題 就 重 現 了 。<br />

但 這 富 貴 少 年 所 指 的 「 永<br />

生 」 是 什 麼 耶 穌 是 這 樣 描<br />

述 的 , 他 對 門 徒 說 :「 但 我<br />

們 要 再 見 到 你 們 , 那 時 , 你<br />

們 心 裏 要 喜 樂 , 並 且 你 們<br />

的 喜 樂 誰 也 不 能 從 你 們 奪<br />

去 。」( 若 十 二 22) 這 句 話 指 出<br />

主 的 愛 所 包 圍 的 永 久 喜 樂 。<br />

我 們 思 考 那 等 待 著 我 們 每 一<br />

個 人 的 最 終 將 來 , 我 們 便 會<br />

找 到 人 生 的 整 個 意 義 , 因 為<br />

這 會 使 我 們 的 生 命 計 畫 往 不<br />

再 受 限 制 或 並 非 轉 瞬 即 逝<br />

的 , 而 是 往 寬 廣 且 深 入 的<br />

方 向 發 展 , 使 我 們 愛 這 世<br />

界 - 這 天 主 深 愛 的 世 界 ,<br />

使 我 們 以 自 由 及 出 於 信 德 與<br />

望 德 的 喜 樂 自 我 獻 身 去 發 展<br />

世 界 。 這 方 向 幫 助 我 們 不 再<br />

視 世 俗 的 現 實 為 絕 對 , 同 時<br />

清 楚 天 主 為 我 們 準 備 了 更 大<br />

的 未 來 。 因 此 , 我 們 能 與 聖<br />

奧 斯 定 一 起 說 「 讓 我 們 渴 望<br />

天 上 的 家 園 , 讓 我 們 思 慕 天<br />

鄉 , 讓 我 們 覺 得 在 此 是 個 異<br />

( 義 籍 Pier Giorgio Frassati),<br />

1925 年 去 世 得 年 24 歲 , 他 的<br />

目 光 一 向 都 專 注 在 永 生 上 ,<br />

他 說 :「 我 要 生 活 , 而 不 要<br />

偷 生 !」 在 一 張 爬 山 時 拍 攝<br />

的 相 片 上 他 留 言 給 朋 友 說 :<br />

「 往 高 處 看 」, 說 明 不 只 追<br />

求 基 督 徒 的 成 全 , 還 要 追 求<br />

永 生 。<br />

親 愛 的 年 輕 朋 友 們 , 我 切 望<br />

你 們 在 你 們 的 計 畫 人 生 裡 不<br />

會 忘 記 這 角 度 : 我 們 被 召 叫<br />

去 進 入 永 生 , 天 主 創 造 我 們<br />

是 為 了 與 祂 永 遠 在 一 起 。 這<br />

會 幫 助 你 們 做 出 有 意 義 的 決<br />

定 , 也 活 出 美 滿 的 人 生 。<br />

六 、 誡 命 - 真 愛 之 道<br />

耶 穌 提 醒 這 位 富 貴 少 年 說 ,<br />

十 誡 是 「 承 受 永 生 」 的 必 需<br />

條 件 。 為 了 能 在 愛 中 生 活 、<br />

清 楚 的 分 辨 善 惡 , 並 且 建 立<br />

穩 固 又 長 久 的 人 生 計 畫 , 十<br />

誡 是 中 重 要 的 指 南 。 耶 穌 也<br />

問 你 們 是 否 知 道 十 誡 、 是 否<br />

設 法 按 天 主 的 律 法 建 構 良<br />

心 , 並 且 將 十 誡 付 諸 實 行 。<br />

不 用 說 也 知 道 , 這 些 問 題 都<br />

與 今 日 的 世 界 大 相 逕 庭 - 今<br />

日 世 界 所 提 倡 的 自 由 是 不 考<br />

慮 價 值 、 律 法 與 客 觀 規 範<br />

的 , 並 且 慫 恿 人 們 拒 絕 這 些<br />

使 他 們 即 時 的 欲 望 受 限 的 規<br />

則 。 可 是 , 這 種 的 選 擇 , 不<br />

但 不 會 帶 人 走 向 自 由 , 反 而<br />

使 人 成 為 自 己 私 慾 的 奴 隸 、<br />

自 己 即 使 需 求 的 奴 隸 、 一 些<br />

偶 像 的 奴 隸 , 如 同 權 力 、 金<br />

錢 、 無 節 制 的 享 樂 和 世 俗 的<br />

各 種 誘 惑 , 使 人 無 法 追 隨 天<br />

生 就 得 到 的 召 喚 去 發 揮 愛<br />

心 。<br />

天 主 給 了 我 們 十 誡 , 因 為 祂<br />

要 教 育 我 們 得 到 真 正 自 由 ,<br />

祂 要 與 我 們 一 起 建 立 愛 、 正<br />

義 與 和 平 的 國 度 。 當 我 們 聽<br />

從 十 誡 , 並 付 諸 實 行 時 , 這<br />

並 不 表 示 我 們 身 不 由 主 , 而<br />

是 我 們 找 到 通 往 自 由 與 真 愛<br />

的 道 路 , 因 為 十 誡 並 未 限 制<br />

幸 福 , 而 是 指 出 如 何 找 到 幸<br />

福 。 在 與 富 貴 少 年 談 話 的 開<br />

頭 , 耶 穌 提 醒 他 說 , 天 主 所<br />

七 、 我 們 需 要 你 們<br />

做 為 今 日 社 會 的 年 青 人 , 就<br />

要 面 對 來 自 失 業 、 缺 乏 一 些<br />

清 楚 的 理 想 及 前 途 茫 茫 的 困<br />

難 。 有 時 候 , 面 對 眼 前 的 危<br />

機 和 它 們 的 影 響 , 你 們 會 感<br />

到 無 能 為 力 。 儘 管 有 這 些 困<br />

難 , 你 們 不 要 灰 心 喪 氣 , 並<br />

且 不 要 放 棄 夢 想 ! 你 們 反 而<br />

要 更 加 培 養 你 心 中 對 友 愛 、<br />

正 義 與 和 平 的 熱 烈 渴 望 。 未<br />

來 是 掌 握 在 那 些 懂 得 尋 找 並<br />

發 現 生 命 與 望 德 的 緣 由 的 人<br />

們 手 中 。 如 果 你 們 願 意 , 未<br />

來 就 在 你 們 的 手 中 , 因 為 天<br />

恩 寵 , 藉 由 與 基 督 的 相 遇 而<br />

挑 戰 : 地 球 資 源 的 使 用 、 對<br />

生 態 的 尊 重 、 資 源 的 公 平 分<br />

配 以 及 財 經 機 制 的 控 管 、 人<br />

類 大 家 庭 中 與 貧 窮 國 家 的 互<br />

助 、 對 抗 全 球 饑 荒 、 勞 工 尊<br />

嚴 的 尊 重 、 服 務 生 命 文 化 、<br />

種 族 間 的 和 平 、 跨 宗 教 交<br />

談 , 與 社 會 傳 播 工 具 的 妥 善<br />

你 們 被 召 叫 去 回 應 這 些 挑<br />

戰 , 為 了 要 建 立 一 個 更 為 公<br />

義 與 友 愛 的 世 界 。 這 些 挑 戰<br />

需 要 一 個 高 標 準 與 充 滿 熱 忱<br />

的 人 生 計 畫 , 在 這 人 生 計 畫<br />

中 , 你 們 要 按 照 天 主 為 你 們<br />

每 一 個 人 的 計 畫 來 運 用 你 們<br />

所 有 的 才 賦 。 這 不 是 說 一 定<br />

習 聖 人 的 行 懿 , 特 別 是 那 些<br />

司 鐸 聖 人 。 你 們 會 發 現 天 主<br />

就 是 他 們 的 嚮 導 , 也 將 會 明<br />

白 他 們 是 如 何 在 信 、 望 、 愛<br />

中 度 過 每 一 天 。 基 督 召 叫 你<br />

們 每 一 位 與 祂 合 作 , 肩 負 起<br />

你 們 的 責 任 建 立 愛 的 文 明 社<br />

會 。 如 果 你 們 聽 從 祂 的 聖<br />

給 我 機 會 作 一 個 符 合 你 們 在<br />

今 年 司 鐸 年 的 默 想 主 題 :<br />

「 見 證 喚 醒 聖 召 」。. 我 們 努<br />

力 推 動 聖 召 的 成 果 基 本 要 靠<br />

天 主 的 自 由 行 動 , 然 而 , 正<br />

如 牧 靈 經 驗 所 證 實 的 , 那 些<br />

已 經 答 覆 天 主 召 叫 , 選 擇 司<br />

鐸 職 責 和 度 奉 獻 生 活 的 人 ,<br />

他 們 個 人 和 團 體 的 見 證 品 質<br />

與 深 度 也 有 幫 助 , 因 為 他 們<br />

的 見 證 能 喚 醒 他 人 心 中 慷 慨<br />

回 應 基 督 召 叫 的 渴 望 。 這 一<br />

主 題 與 司 鐸 和 度 獻 身 生 活 者<br />

以 , 我 想 在 此 邀 請 所 有 蒙 受<br />

的 人 , 更 新 他 們 忠 誠 的 回<br />

應 , 特 別 是 在 這 司 鐸 年 ──<br />

我 為 紀 念 法 國 亞 爾 斯 本 堂 神<br />

父 聖 維 雅 納 、 這 位 歷 久 彌 新<br />

的 模 範 司 鐸 和 牧 者 , 去 世 150<br />

週 年 那 時 宣 布 的 。<br />

舊 約 中 的 先 知 明 白 , 他 們 被<br />

召 叫 , 是 要 以 他 們 的 生 活 來<br />

為 他 們 宣 講 的 訊 息 作 證 , 並<br />

且 準 備 好 面 對 誤 解 、 排 斥 與<br />

迫 害 。 天 主 交 付 給 他 們 的 任<br />

務 , 要 他 們 全 心 全 力 , 像 心<br />

果 , 他 們 不 僅 準 備 好 要 向 天<br />

父 派 遣 ( 參 閱 若 五 36), 向<br />

全 人 類 為 天 主 的 愛 作 證 , 一<br />

視 同 仁 , 對 最 弱 小 的 弟 兄 姊<br />

妹 、 罪 人 、 被 棄 者 和 窮 人 特<br />

別 關 心 。 耶 穌 是 天 主 , 以 及<br />

天 主 關 心 全 人 類 得 救 的 至 高<br />

見 證 者 。 在 新 約 時 代 的 曙 光<br />

初 現 的 時 候 ── 天 主 的 許 諾<br />

翰 看 到 耶 穌 走 向 他 正 施 洗 的<br />

約 旦 河 時 , 他 便 指 著 耶 穌 向<br />

門 徒 說 :「 除 免 世 罪 的 天 主<br />

羔 羊 」( 若 一 29)。 他 的 見 證<br />

是 如 此 地 有 效 , 所 以 兩 個 門<br />

徒 「 聽 見 他 說 這 話 , 便 跟 隨<br />

了 耶 穌 」( 若 一 37)。<br />

正 如 我 們 在 若 望 福 音 所 看 到<br />

的 , 伯 多 祿 的 蒙 受 召 喚 , 同<br />

樣 地 也 是 藉 著 他 的 哥 哥 安 德<br />

肋 的 見 證 ── 安 德 肋 遇 見 師<br />

傅 之 後 便 接 受 邀 請 , 留 下 來<br />

與 祂 同 住 , 就 感 覺 得 要 立 刻<br />

跟 伯 多 祿 分 享 與 主 「 同 住 」<br />

的 經 驗 :「『 我 們 找 到 了 默<br />

西 亞 』── 意 即 基 督 , 遂 領<br />

他 到 耶 穌 跟 前 」( 若 一 41-<br />

42)。 納 塔 乃 耳 、 巴 爾 多 祿<br />

茂 的 情 形 也 一 樣 , 多 虧 另 一<br />

門 徒 斐 理 伯 的 見 證 ── 他 興<br />

高 彩 烈 地 告 訴 他 自 己 的 重 大<br />

發 現 說 :「 梅 瑟 在 法 律 上 所<br />

記 載 , 和 先 知 們 所 預 報 的 ,<br />

我 們 找 著 了 , 就 是 若 瑟 的 兒<br />

子 , 出 身 於 納 匝 肋 的 耶 穌 」<br />

( 若 一 45)。<br />

天 主 自 由 及 寬 仁 的 召 叫 接 觸<br />

及 呼 喚 要 那 些 接 受 祂 邀 請 的<br />

人 負 起 責 任 , 藉 著 他 們 的 見<br />

證 成 為 祂 聖 召 的 工 具 。 今 日<br />

的 教 會 也 是 一 樣 : 上 主 使 用<br />

忠 於 自 已 使 命 的 司 鐸 們 的 見<br />

證 來 喚 醒 新 的 司 鐸 和 修 道 聖<br />

召 , 為 天 主 子 民 服 務 。 為<br />

此 , 我 想 提 出 司 鐸 生 活 的 三<br />

個 要 點 , 我 認 為 對 司 鐸 們 的<br />

有 效 見 證 是 極 為 重 要 的 。<br />

司 鐸 聖 召 及 獻 身 生 活 聖 召 的<br />

基 本 和 顯 而 易 見 的 要 素 , 是<br />

與 基 督 的 友 誼 。 耶 穌 的 一 生<br />

都 與 父 持 續 不 斷 地 結 合 , 這<br />

使 門 徒 們 渴 望 也 有 同 樣 的 經<br />

驗 , 並 從 耶 穌 身 上 學 習 與 天<br />

主 共 融 和 不 斷 地 對 話 。 若 司<br />

鐸 稱 為 「 天 主 的 人 」, 意 即<br />

他 屬 於 天 主 , 並 且 幫 助 他 人<br />

瞭 解 和 愛 天 主 , 那 麼 , 他 不<br />

能 不 培 養 與 天 主 間 深 刻 的 親<br />

密 關 係 , 居 住 在 天 主 的 愛<br />

內 , 並 留 出 聆 聽 天 主 聖 言 的<br />

空 間 。 祈 禱 是 喚 醒 聖 召 的 首<br />

要 作 證 方 式 。 如 同 宗 徒 安 德<br />

肋 , 向 他 的 兄 弟 宣 報 他 認 識<br />

了 師 傅 , 任 何 人 想 要 成 為 門<br />

徒 , 為 基 督 作 證 , 也 必 須 親<br />

自 「 見 過 」 祂 , 認 識 祂 , 懂<br />

得 愛 祂 並 與 祂 同 住 。<br />

在 司 鐸 和 度 獻 身 生 活 者 的 生<br />

命 中 的 另 一 要 點 是 對 天 主 的<br />

全 然 自 我 奉 獻 。 宗 徒 若 望 這<br />

樣 寫 :「 我 們 所 以 認 識 了<br />

愛 , 因 為 那 一 位 為 我 們 捨 棄<br />

了 自 己 的 生 命 , 我 們 也 應 當<br />

為 弟 兄 們 捨 棄 生 命 」( 若<br />

壹 三 16)。 若 望 以 這 話 邀 請<br />

門 徒 們 進 入 耶 穌 的 道 理 原<br />

則 : 祂 一 生 承 行 父 的 旨 意 ,<br />

直 到 獻 上 自 己 寶 貴 的 生 命 ,<br />

死 在 十 字 架 上 。 天 主 的 慈 悲<br />

便 在 此 充 分 地 顯 示 出 來 ──<br />

滿 懷 慈 悲 的 愛 戰 勝 了 邪 惡 的<br />

黑 暗 、 罪 惡 與 死 亡 。 耶 穌 在<br />

最 後 晚 餐 時 所 做 的 ── 從 坐<br />

席 起 來 , 脫 下 外 衣 , 拿 起 一<br />

條 手 巾 束 在 腰 間 , 然 後 把 水<br />

倒 在 盆 裡 , 開 始 替 門 徒 們 濯<br />

足 , 表 達 了 祂 一 生 所 宣 示 的<br />

服 務 與 恩 賜 的 意 義 , 以 及 對<br />

的 人 , 都 必 須 竭 盡 全 力 為 自<br />

己 對 天 主 的 全 然 奉 獻 作 證 。<br />

這 就 是 他 自 我 付 出 能 力 的 來<br />

源 , 他 能 將 自 己 獻 身 於 那 些<br />

透 過 天 主 的 上 智 安 排 而 託 付<br />

給 他 牧 靈 職 務 的 人 , 全 然 、<br />

不 斷 、 喜 悅 地 成 為 眾 多 弟 兄<br />

姊 妹 們 的 旅 途 同 伴 , 好 使 他<br />

們 開 放 地 與 基 督 相 遇 , 而 且<br />

祂 的 聖 言 變 成 他 們 路 途 上 的<br />

亮 光 。 每 一 個 聖 召 故 事 , 幾<br />

乎 都 與 一 位 司 鐸 喜 悅 地 為 了<br />

天 國 而 獻 身 於 他 的 弟 兄 姊 妹<br />

所 作 的 見 證 交 織 在 一 起 , 因<br />

為 一 位 司 鐸 的 臨 在 和 話 語 能<br />

引 發 探 問 , 進 而 導 致 最 後 的<br />

決 定 ( 參 閱 教 宗 若 望 保 祿 二<br />

世 勸 諭 《 我 要 給 你 們 牧 者 》<br />

39)。<br />

第 三 個 要 點 必 然 是 司 鐸 和 度<br />

獻 身 生 活 者 的 特 色 就 是 共 融<br />

的 生 活 。 耶 穌 指 給 我 們 , 若<br />

要 成 為 他 的 門 徒 , 其 標 記 是<br />

在 愛 中 的 深 度 共 融 :「 如 果<br />

你 們 之 間 彼 此 相 親 相 愛 , 世<br />

人 因 此 就 可 認 出 你 們 是 我 的<br />

門 徒 」( 若 十 三 35)。 司 鐸<br />

必 須 特 別 是 一 個 共 融 的 人 ,<br />

向 所 有 人 開 放 , 能 把 上 主 在<br />

慈 善 中 所 託 付 給 他 的 羊 群 全<br />

部 聚 集 起 來 , 在 合 一 中 帶 領<br />

前 進 , 同 時 又 彌 合 分 裂 、 療<br />

癒 失 睦 、 解 決 衝 突 和 誤 會 、<br />

並 寬 恕 過 犯 。<strong>20</strong>05 年 7 月 ,<br />

我 在 與 奧 斯 塔 (Aosta) 神 職 人<br />

員 聚 會 時 提 到 說 , 若 是 年 輕<br />

人 眼 裡 的 司 鐸 是 孤 獨 而 憂 傷<br />

的 , 他 們 大 概 不 會 受 鼓 舞 步<br />

其 後 塵 。 如 果 他 們 以 為 這 就<br />

是 司 鐸 的 生 活 , 當 會 心 存 疑<br />

慮 。 因 此 , 重 要 的 , 是 要 將<br />

司 鐸 的 共 融 生 活 化 為 事 實 ,<br />

使 這 事 實 彰 顯 出 身 為 司 鐸 的<br />

美 好 。 然 後 , 一 個 青 年 人 才<br />

會 說 :「 是 的 , 這 也 可 以 是<br />

我 的 未 來 , 這 樣 我 才 能 度<br />

這 種 生 活 」(Insegnamenti I,<br />

〔<strong>20</strong>05〕, 354)。 梵 蒂 岡 第 二<br />

次 大 公 會 議 , 在 論 及 見 證 喚<br />

醒 聖 召 的 文 件 中 , 強 調 司 鐸<br />

必 須 呈 現 愛 德 和 弟 兄 合 作 的<br />

楷 模 ( 參 閱 《 司 鐸 之 培 養 法<br />

令 》2)。<br />

在 此 , 我 願 回 顧 我 可 敬 的 前<br />

任 教 宗 若 望 保 祿 二 世 所 說<br />

的 :「 司 鐸 們 的 生 活 本 身 ,<br />

那 種 無 條 件 地 獻 身 給 天 主 的<br />

羊 群 , 對 主 和 祂 教 會 愛 心 服<br />

務 的 見 證 ── 以 滿 懷 希 望 的<br />

心 情 及 復 活 的 喜 樂 , 自 由 地<br />

接 受 十 字 架 所 標 示 的 見 證<br />

── 以 及 兄 弟 般 的 團 結 和 向<br />

普 世 福 傳 的 熱 火 , 都 是 聖 召<br />

成 長 中 首 要 的 與 最 具 說 服 力<br />

的 因 素 」(《 我 要 給 你 們 牧<br />

者 》41)。 可 以 這 樣 說 , 聖<br />

召 的 產 生 來 自 與 司 鐸 們 的 接<br />

觸 , 像 似 一 個 用 言 語 、 典 範<br />

和 整 個 生 命 傳 遞 下 來 的 寶 貴<br />

遺 產 。<br />

度 獻 身 生 活 的 意 義 也 是 一<br />

樣 。 修 會 的 男 女 會 士 , 當 他<br />

們 以 對 福 音 的 全 然 忠 誠 跟 隨<br />

基 督 , 並 喜 樂 地 以 福 音 的 價<br />

值 和 行 為 標 準 作 為 自 己 的 價<br />

值 與 標 準 , 他 們 的 生 命 本 身<br />

就 宣 講 基 督 的 愛 。 在 這 受 物<br />

質 主 義 、 自 我 中 心 和 個 人 主<br />

義 影 響 的 世 界 裡 , 他 們 成 了<br />

「 反 對 的 標 記 」。 由 於 他 們<br />

臣 服 於 天 主 , 這 樣 地 自 我 棄<br />

絕 , 他 們 的 忠 信 和 見 證 的 力<br />

量 就 不 斷 地 喚 醒 眾 多 青 年 心<br />

中 的 渴 望 , 使 年 青 人 慷 慨 和<br />

全 然 地 終 身 跟 隨 耶 穌 。 要 肖<br />

似 耶 穌 , 貞 潔 、 神 貧 和 服<br />

從 , 要 與 耶 穌 認 同 : 這 就 是<br />

獻 身 生 活 的 理 想 、 是 一 個 為<br />

天 主 在 人 類 生 活 與 歷 史 中 的<br />

絕 對 首 要 性 作 出 的 見 證 。<br />

當 每 位 司 鐸 和 每 位 度 獻 身 生<br />

活 者 忠 於 自 己 的 聖 召 , 他 們<br />

事 奉 基 督 的 喜 樂 就 自 然 流<br />

露 , 並 邀 請 所 有 基 督 信 徒 回<br />

應 成 聖 的 普 世 召 叫 。 因 此 ,<br />

為 了 要 推 動 司 鐸 和 度 獻 身 生<br />

活 的 聖 召 , 並 且 為 使 對 聖 召<br />

的 呼 籲 更 有 力 量 及 有 效 果 ,<br />

已 經 回 應 了 天 主 和 接 受 了 天<br />

主 為 他 們 個 人 的 生 命 所 安 排<br />

的 計 畫 的 那 些 人 , 他 們 的 榜<br />

樣 是 絕 對 不 可 少 的 。 個 人 的<br />

見 證 、 來 自 具 體 而 實 際 生 活<br />

而 作 的 選 擇 , 將 會 鼓 勵 青 年<br />

人 為 自 己 的 將 來 打 算 , 做 出<br />

有 關 未 來 嚴 以 律 己 的 決 定 。<br />

幫 助 年 輕 人 , 必 須 要 懂 得 交<br />

往 與 溝 通 上 的 技 巧 , 方 能 啟<br />

發 並 陪 伴 他 們 , 更 重 要 的 ,<br />

卻 是 以 身 作 則 活 出 聖 召 的 生<br />

命 。 這 正 是 聖 善 的 亞 爾 斯 本<br />

堂 神 父 所 做 的 : 總 是 和 本 堂<br />

教 友 保 持 密 切 聯 繫 ,「 以 自<br />

己 的 生 活 見 證 來 教 導 他 的<br />

本 堂 教 友 。 從 他 的 榜 樣 ,<br />

他 們 學 會 祈 禱 」(<strong>20</strong>09 年 6<br />

月 16 日 ,《 司 鐸 年 致 司 鐸 信<br />

函 》)。<br />

祈 願 聖 召 節 這 一 天 再 次 為 許<br />

多 年 輕 人 提 供 一 個 機 會 , 讓<br />

他 們 省 思 自 己 的 聖 召 , 並 以<br />

簡 單 、 信 賴 和 全 然 開 放 的 態<br />

度 忠 於 它 。 祈 求 童 貞 瑪 利 亞<br />

── 教 會 之 母 護 佑 天 主 召 喚<br />

與 祂 更 親 近 的 每 一 位 年 輕 人<br />

心 中 的 小 種 子 , 幫 助 它 成 長<br />

為 一 棵 茁 壯 大 樹 , 為 教 會 和<br />

全 人 類 結 出 豐 盛 的 果 實 。 我<br />

適 逢 宗 座 醫 療 人 員 牧 靈 委 員<br />

會 成 立 廿 五 週 年 , 也 是 教 宗<br />

若 望 保 祿 二 世 發 表 宗 座 牧 函<br />

「 帶 來 救 恩 的 痛 苦 (Salvific<br />

doloris)」 廿 六 週 年 。 所 以 一<br />

方 面 , 本 次 大 會 再 次 研 讀 若<br />

望 保 祿 二 世 深 具 啟 發 性 的 牧<br />

函 , 一 方 面 也 檢 視 這 廿 五 年<br />

來 委 員 會 的 成 果 , 並 感 念 若<br />

望 保 祿 二 世 的 卓 見 與 德 澤 。<br />

會 議 開 始 時 , 大 會 主 席 辛 懋<br />

斯 基 主 教 ( 宗 座 醫 療 人 員 牧<br />

靈 委 員 會 主 席 ) 先 概 括 地 解<br />

釋 教 宗 牧 函 「 帶 來 救 恩 的 痛<br />

苦 」 的 梗 概 。 這 篇 牧 函 的 前<br />

半 解 釋 痛 苦 的 原 因 、 後 半 解<br />

釋 痛 苦 的 目 的 。 痛 苦 的 意 義<br />

只 能 在 基 督 的 生 命 內 獲 得 解<br />

答 。 基 督 卓 絕 的 愛 , 就 是 祂<br />

無 罪 卻 出 於 自 願 地 受 苦 。 這<br />

種 愛 澈 底 地 轉 化 了 痛 苦 。 將<br />

不 幸 轉 化 成 富 饒 。 因 此 整 部<br />

福 音 可 說 是 一 部 苦 難 的 福<br />

音 , 而 最 終 的 目 的 就 是 要 我<br />

們 行 善 。 這 種 信 仰 使 人 性 提<br />

昇 到 超 性 的 境 界 。 經 由 愛 的<br />

奧 蹟 , 人 能 夠 接 受 痛 苦 而 獲<br />

得 救 恩 。 因 此 , 醫 療 照 護 的<br />

目 的 , 並 非 只 是 提 供 醫 學 上<br />

的 治 癒 。 因 為 不 論 哪 種 治 療<br />

的 措 施 , 最 後 遲 早 會 失 敗 ,<br />

而 人 永 遠 無 法 完 成 消 弭 痛<br />

苦 。 但 是 藉 由 信 仰 的 超 性 解<br />

答 , 我 們 卻 能 彼 此 支 持 與 關<br />

懷 。<br />

第 二 堂 演 講 由 宗 座 文 化 委 員<br />

會 主 席 拉 瓦 西 主 教 主 講 。 他<br />

更 深 入 地 探 討 教 宗 牧 函 「 帶<br />

來 救 恩 的 痛 苦 」 的 意 涵 。 拉<br />

瓦 西 主 教 表 示 , 痛 苦 象 徵 的<br />

本 質 是 人 體 會 到 自 身 有 限 的<br />

存 在 。 痛 苦 不 僅 具 有 物 質 上<br />

的 及 心 理 上 的 層 面 , 也 包 含<br />

道 德 上 的 層 面 。 因 為 受 苦 者<br />

不 僅 承 受 肉 體 上 的 疼 痛 , 也<br />

伴 隨 心 理 的 焦 慮 , 以 及 精 神<br />

上 認 定 自 己 遭 受 道 德 上 的 懲<br />

罰 。 所 以 我 們 不 只 是 從 肉 身<br />

上 , 也 從 精 神 上 ; 不 只 是 以<br />

醫 學 的 治 療 , 也 從 人 性 的 同<br />

情 去 關 懷 受 苦 者 。 拉 瓦 西 主<br />

教 進 一 步 指 出 痛 苦 的 三 個 層<br />

次 。 第 一 、 痛 苦 常 是 一 種 危<br />

機 。 自 古 以 來 , 人 們 多 以 負<br />

面 的 角 度 看 待 痛 苦 。 痛 苦 代<br />

表 喪 失 生 存 的 意 義 , 因 此 死<br />

亡 反 而 被 視 為 解 脫 。 拉 瓦 西<br />

主 教 也 指 出 ,「 痛 苦 是 無 神<br />

論 者 邪 惡 的 堡 壘 」。 無 神 論<br />

者 的 二 個 論 述 , 一 個 就 是 神<br />

無 法 免 除 人 類 的 痛 苦 , 這 樣<br />

的 神 是 個 無 能 的 神 。 另 一 個<br />

論 述 就 是 神 能 夠 但 卻 不 願 意<br />

免 除 人 類 的 痛 苦 , 而 這 樣 的<br />

神 就 是 一 個 殘 酷 的 怪 物 。 因<br />

此 , 若 是 我 們 不 能 為 痛 苦 找<br />

到 一 個 積 極 的 意 義 ,「 天 主<br />

是 全 能 與 仁 慈 的 」 這 個 信 念<br />

便 會 受 到 挑 戰 。 確 實 , 人 在<br />

遭 受 痛 苦 的 時 候 , 第 一 個 危<br />

機 就 是 人 與 天 主 的 關 係 受 到<br />

挑 戰 。 就 如 約 伯 在 痛 苦 中 也<br />

抱 怨 天 主 「 全 能 者 的 箭 射 中<br />

了 我 , 我 的 心 靈 喝 盡 它 們 的<br />

毒 汁 , 天 主 的 恐 嚇 列 陣 攻 擊<br />

我 。」( 約 六 3) 其 次 痛 苦 也<br />

帶 來 人 與 人 的 危 機 , 就 如 約<br />

伯 的 妻 子 朋 友 都 遠 離 他 或 責<br />

備 他 。 在 痛 苦 中 , 人 體 會 到<br />

孤 獨 。 最 後 痛 苦 往 往 跟 隨 著<br />

道 德 的 責 難 與 懲 罰 。 在 痛 苦<br />

中 , 人 常 追 問 「 為 什 麼 」。<br />

在 約 伯 傳 的 最 後 , 天 主 並 沒<br />

有 直 接 回 答 這 個 問 題 , 卻 將<br />

自 己 啟 示 给 他 。 最 後 約 伯<br />

說 :「 以 前 我 只 聽 見 了 有 關<br />

你 的 事 , 現 今 我 親 眼 見 了<br />

你 。 」 ( 約 四 二 5 ) 在 這 樣<br />

的 啟 示 之 下 , 人 不 再 探 求 惡<br />

的 原 因 , 卻 去 尋 找 天 主 的 臨<br />

在 。<br />

痛 苦 的 第 二 個 層 次 就 是 痛 苦<br />

有 它 的 功 效 。 痛 苦 可 以 帶 來<br />

皈 依 , 並 建 立 新 的 價 值 觀 。<br />

在 約 伯 傳 中 , 天 主 沒 有 向 約<br />

伯 解 釋 痛 苦 的 理 由 , 卻 向 他<br />

展 示 祂 的 計 劃 , 而 這 個 計 劃<br />

是 擁 抱 眾 生 的 。 因 此 痛 苦 也<br />

包 含 在 天 主 創 造 的 奧 蹟 內 。<br />

唯 有 透 過 信 仰 的 途 徑 , 才 能<br />

超 越 痛 苦 。<br />

痛 苦 的 第 三 個 層 次 就 是 基 督<br />

與 苦 難 的 關 係 。 在 馬 爾 谷 福<br />

音 中 , 耶 穌 四 成 的 奇 蹟 都 跟<br />

治 病 相 關 。 代 表 耶 穌 如 何 向<br />

受 苦 者 伸 出 雙 手 。 其 中 最 動<br />

人 的 一 段 就 是 耶 穌 治 好 了 一<br />

個 痲 瘋 病 患 , 祂 不 僅 治 好<br />

他 , 還 深 手 撫 摸 這 個 在 當 時<br />

被 視 為 不 潔 而 必 須 被 隔 絕 的<br />

病 人 。 耶 穌 在 山 園 祈 禱 時 ,<br />

也 感 到 憂 懼 , 也 經 歷 到 天 主<br />

的 緘 默 , 在 十 字 架 上 , 他 感<br />

到 被 遺 棄 , 最 後 大 喊 一 聲 而<br />

斷 氣 。 這 說 明 了 耶 穌 願 意 以<br />

自 己 的 身 體 經 驗 並 認 同 人 的<br />

痛 苦 。 雖 然 耶 穌 確 實 死 了 並<br />

甚 至 成 了 一 具 屍 體 , 他 仍 然<br />

是 神 。 這 些 苦 難 並 不 會 減 損<br />

祂 的 神 性 。 這 向 我 們 顯 示 ,<br />

我 們 所 遭 受 的 痛 苦 , 也 絲 毫<br />

不 會 減 損 我 們 成 為 人 的 尊<br />

嚴 。 這 就 是 天 主 降 生 奧 蹟 的<br />

超 性 意 義 , 一 個 愛 與 受 苦 的<br />

奧 蹟 。 天 主 並 沒 有 解 釋 或 保<br />

護 我 們 不 受 痛 苦 , 卻 出 於<br />

愛 , 親 自 進 入 人 的 世 界 來 感<br />

覺 與 經 驗 人 的 痛 苦 。<br />

第 一 天 上 午 的 第 二 個 單 元 是<br />

各 個 不 同 宗 教 的 代 表 ( 猶 太<br />

教 、 印 度 教 、 伊 斯 蘭 教 、 佛<br />

教 ) 來 解 釋 他 們 宗 教 對 痛 苦<br />

的 看 法 。 其 中 佛 教 部 分 是 由<br />

台 灣 南 華 大 學 的 釋 慧 開 法 師<br />

主 講 。 最 後 是 台 灣 輔 仁 大 學<br />

的 陳 美 琴 教 授 介 紹 在 亞 洲 文<br />

化 中 的 痛 苦 。<br />

第 一 天 下 午 的 第 一 單 元 是 由<br />

醫 院 牧 靈 神 師 、 醫 師 、 護<br />

士 、 病 患 、 病 患 家 屬 、 志 工<br />

各 一 名 組 成 的 圓 桌 演 講 。 其<br />

中 有 許 多 值 得 參 考 之 處 。 例<br />

如 該 牧 靈 神 師 提 到 許 多 病 患<br />

常 會 埋 怨 「 為 什 麼 」, 對 於<br />

病 患 的 質 問 , 我 們 有 時 保 持<br />

有 敬 意 的 沉 默 , 比 滔 滔 不 絕<br />

的 說 教 來 的 更 好 , 因 為 太 多<br />

的 話 反 而 可 能 造 成 傷 害 , 只<br />

有 那 些 能 夠 安 慰 人 並 給 人 力<br />

量 的 話 才 能 進 入 人 的 內 心 。<br />

他 也 提 到 一 些 探 訪 病 患 的 技<br />

巧 : 保 持 喜 樂 的 心 、 面 帶 微<br />

笑 、 不 要 增 加 病 患 的 痛 苦 、<br />

把 所 有 的 悲 傷 留 在 門 外 。 他<br />

有 時 會 帶 著 吉 它 , 用 音 樂 來<br />

緩 和 病 患 的 痛 苦 , 傾 聽 病 患<br />

的 抱 怨 , 陪 同 病 患 一 齊 祈<br />

禱 、 感 恩 、 默 想 。<br />

對 於 醫 師 而 言 , 演 講 者 強 調<br />

我 們 必 須 堅 持 我 們 的 信 仰 與<br />

教 會 的 教 導 , 並 且 要 以 病 患<br />

的 利 益 為 第 一 考 量 , 而 不 是<br />

先 考 慮 技 術 上 的 方 便 性 或 經<br />

濟 效 益 。<br />

在 護 士 方 面 , 演 講 者 提 供 了<br />

幾 個 建 言 : 不 要 低 估 病 患 所<br />

受 到 的 痛 苦 , 要 耐 心 聆 聽 ,<br />

不 要 打 斷 病 患 的 談 話 。<br />

在 志 工 方 面 , 特 別 有 用 的 建<br />

議 是 : 一 、 要 謙 遜 , 不 要<br />

以 為 自 己 擁 有 魔 杖 。 二 、<br />

能 夠 聆 聽 。 三 、 要 找 到 時<br />

間 充 實 自 己 。 演 講 者 也 強<br />

調 , 病 人 是 我 們 照 顧 的 主 體<br />

(subject), 而 不 是 一 個 對 象<br />

(object)。<br />

最 後 一 位 坐 著 輪 椅 的 病 人 敘<br />

述 自 己 的 經 歷 。 她 雖 是 殘<br />

障 , 但 遇 到 深 愛 她 的 丈 夫 ,<br />

他 們 生 了 小 孩 , 組 織 家 庭 。<br />

她 表 示 她 的 疾 病 從 來 不 是 困<br />

擾 她 的 理 由 , 她 比 較 擔 心 是<br />

否 能 提 供 她 的 子 女 必 須 的 物<br />

質 需 求 。 而 會 議 的 主 席 表 示<br />

她 是 一 位 了 不 起 的 母 親 , 因<br />

為 母 親 的 角 色 並 不 是 做 飯 洗<br />

碗 。 她 所 付 出 的 愛 才 是 家 庭<br />

最 重 要 的 支 柱 。<br />

第 一 天 下 午 的 第 二 單 元 有 二<br />

場 演 講 。 首 先 是 哥 倫 布 騎 士<br />

會 的 最 高 騎 士 Dr. Carl Anderson<br />

演 講 若 望 保 祿 二 世 所 受 的 痛<br />

苦 對 教 會 與 世 界 的 意 義 。<br />

Anderson 指 出 , 若 望 保 祿 二 世<br />

充 分 利 用 天 主 的 一 切 恩 賜 。<br />

是 有 力 量 的 , 這 個 力 量 是 只<br />

有 天 主 才 能 賜 予 的 , 而 他 大<br />

膽 地 在 世 人 前 承 受 痛 苦 , 展<br />

現 人 性 的 尊 嚴 。 在 若 望 保 祿<br />

二 世 的 任 期 前 半 , 他 是 個 運<br />

動 健 將 , 有 這 強 壯 的 體 魄 ,<br />

無 法 抵 抗 的 群 眾 魅 力 , 週 遊<br />

各 國 , 處 處 受 人 歡 迎 。 但 到<br />

他 任 期 後 半 , 卻 身 受 病 苦 。<br />

但 他 卻 毅 然 承 受 , 將 自 己 的<br />

苦 難 與 基 督 結 合 , 做 為 獻 給<br />

教 會 的 犧 牲 。 A n d e r s o n 提 到<br />

一 個 若 望 保 祿 二 世 的 故 事 ,<br />

生 說 : 『 我 們 在 墨 西 哥 見<br />

面 』。 若 望 保 祿 二 世 見 證 了<br />

痛 苦 是 一 種 愛 的 行 動 , 是 一<br />

種 聖 召 與 殉 道 者 的 精 神 , 只<br />

有 在 天 主 的 愛 中 , 才 能 提 昇<br />

痛 苦 的 意 義 。 因 此 , 教 友 都<br />

希 望 若 望 保 祿 二 世 能 早 日 封<br />

聖 , 並 被 立 為 「 受 苦 著 的 主<br />

保 」。<br />

第 二 場 演 講 , 是 C o m a s t r i 樞<br />

機 主 教 演 講 痛 苦 對 這 個 時 代<br />

的 人 有 何 意 義 。 樞 機 主 教 指<br />

出 當 今 的 世 界 受 到 三 種 思 潮<br />

的 毒 害 。 一 是 唯 物 主 義 。 樞<br />

機 以 馬 克 斯 主 義 為 代 表 , 指<br />

出 馬 克 斯 在 研 究 經 濟 學 的 時<br />

候 , 忘 記 了 經 濟 學 的 主 體 是<br />

人 , 而 不 是 物 。 第 二 是 虛 無<br />

主 義 。 在 虛 無 主 義 下 , 世 上<br />

的 一 切 事 情 都 是 沒 有 意 義<br />

的 。 第 三 是 商 業 主 義 。 樞 機<br />

以 花 花 公 子 雜 誌 為 代 表 , 好<br />

像 人 只 要 享 樂 就 夠 了 , 其 他<br />

一 切 都 不 值 得 關 心 。 在 這 些<br />

思 潮 下 , 天 主 教 信 仰 及 對 痛<br />

苦 的 闡 釋 更 為 突 出 。 在 聖 神<br />

的 啟 發 下 , 痛 苦 使 我 們 與 天<br />

主 更 加 親 近 。<br />

會 議 第 二 天 的 早 晨 , 在 伯 多<br />

祿 大 殿 的 地 下 墓 穴 裡 舉 行 彌<br />

撒 。 結 束 後 大 家 前 往 若 望 保<br />

祿 二 世 的 墓 前 祈 禱 , 並 表 達<br />

追 思 。<br />

第 二 天 的 議 程 主 要 在 探 討 教<br />

宗 詔 書 「Dolentium Hominum」<br />

與 介 紹 宗 座 醫 療 人 員 牧 靈 委<br />

員 會 成 立 的 宗 旨 、 歷 程 與 這<br />

廿 五 年 來 的 成 果 。 辛 懋 斯 基<br />

主 教 表 示 : 對 病 人 的 關 懷 一<br />

直 是 教 會 服 務 不 可 欠 缺 的 一<br />

部 份 。 若 望 保 祿 二 世 體 會 到<br />

這 樣 的 工 作 , 憑 著 個 人 的 力<br />

量 是 不 夠 的 , 所 以 必 須 團 結<br />

起 來 , 群 策 群 力 , 不 僅 經 由<br />

地 區 性 的 合 作 , 更 進 一 步 透<br />

過 國 際 性 的 合 作 , 才 能 有 效<br />

地 捍 衛 信 仰 。 因 此 教 廷 在 若<br />

望 保 祿 二 世 的 指 示 下 成 立 了<br />

宗 座 醫 療 人 員 牧 靈 委 員 會 。<br />

這 個 委 員 會 的 工 作 , 就 是 針<br />

對 醫 療 工 作 人 員 , 包 括 醫<br />

師 、 護 士 、 專 業 人 士 、 志 工<br />

與 牧 靈 人 員 提 供 訓 練 與 多 種<br />

支 援 與 聯 繫 , 清 楚 地 傳 達 教<br />

會 的 倫 理 。 並 以 基 督 徒 的 身<br />

份 , 積 極 參 與 科 學 與 醫 學 的<br />

專 業 研 究 。 其 中 有 位 演 講 者<br />

指 出 , 是 醫 院 , 而 不 是 某 個<br />

大 教 堂 , 才 是 一 個 不 分 宗<br />

教 、 國 籍 、 種 族 , 所 有 的 人<br />

都 會 去 尋 求 協 助 並 受 到 平 等<br />

對 待 的 地 方 。 因 此 醫 院 有 著<br />

一 個 宗 教 性 的 本 質 。 在 當 今<br />

這 個 有 著 去 人 性 化 及 輕 視 生<br />

命 的 傾 向 的 社 會 中 , 如 何 堅<br />

持 最 基 本 的 醫 學 倫 理 ( 自<br />

主 、 善 意 、 公 義 ) 更 是 所 有<br />

從 事 醫 護 工 作 的 基 督 徒 責 無<br />

旁 貸 的 使 命 。<br />

順 帶 一 提 的 是 : 衛 生 署 長 楊<br />

志 良 先 生 有 參 加 當 日 的 議<br />

程 , 辛 懋 斯 基 主 教 亦 將 他 介<br />

紹 給 大 家 認 識 。 在 Angelini 樞<br />

機 主 教 講 述 他 前 往 大 陸 訪 問<br />

的 時 候 , 辛 懋 斯 基 主 教 也 立<br />

刻 告 訴 他 台 灣 的 衛 生 署 長 就<br />

坐 在 聽 眾 席 中 。<br />

當 日 下 午 尚 有 一 場 世 界 衛 生<br />

組 織 代 表 的 演 講 。 主 講 者 指<br />

出 當 今 世 界 中 , 尚 有 57 個 國<br />

家 面 臨 醫 療 照 護 嚴 重 不 足 的<br />

危 機 , 可 由 這 些 國 家 極 高 的<br />

產 婦 與 嬰 兒 死 亡 率 看 出 。 導<br />

致 這 些 國 家 這 種 困 境 的 主 要<br />

原 因 就 是 貧 窮 、 政 府 無 能 與<br />

社 會 不 平 等 。 要 提 昇 這 些<br />

國 家 初 級 健 康 照 護 ( primary<br />

health care) 就 必 須 動 員 社 會 各<br />

階 層 , 貫 徹 平 等 、 社 會 公 義<br />

與 全 民 健 保 的 價 值 , 並 透 過<br />

全 民 健 保 、 醫 療 服 務 、 公 眾<br />

政 策 與 領 導 階 層 的 革 新 才 能<br />

成 功 改 造 這 些 國 家 的 衛 生 系<br />

統 。 而 在 其 中 , 教 會 扮 演 著<br />

極 重 要 的 角 色 。 因 為 信 仰 團<br />

體 所 經 營 的 機 構 , 常 是 這 些<br />

國 家 唯 一 的 醫 療 提 供 者 。<br />

第 二 天 晚 上 , 大 會 安 排 了 一<br />

場 音 樂 會 。 難 能 可 貴 的 是 音<br />

樂 會 的 前 半 是 由 來 自 台 灣 的<br />

大 會 的 第 三 天 沒 有 安 排 演<br />

講 , 而 是 一 系 列 的 禮 儀 活<br />

動 。 由 早 上 聖 伯 爾 納 德 的 聖<br />

髑 遊 行 開 始 。 眾 人 一 邊 頌 唸<br />

玫 瑰 經 , 由 聖 天 使 堡 遊 行 到<br />

伯 多 祿 大 殿 。 接 著 就 是 教 宗<br />

本 篤 十 六 世 主 祭 的 大 禮 彌<br />

撒 。 教 宗 講 道 中 再 次 強 調 服<br />

務 病 患 與 受 苦 者 的 重 要 。 當<br />

日 傍 晚 則 有 露 德 聖 母 遊 行 。<br />

眾 人 手 持 燭 光 , 由 聖 天 使 堡<br />

遊 行 到 伯 多 祿 大 殿 廣 場 。 在<br />

廣 場 上 頌 唸 玫 瑰 經 , 由 多 位<br />

神 父 與 教 友 代 表 以 意 大 利<br />

文 、 英 文 、 法 文 與 西 班 牙 文<br />

帶 唸 聖 母 經 。 羅 馬 市 長 也 來<br />

到 現 場 。 結 束 時 教 宗 出 現 在<br />

寓 所 陽 台 上 , 手 持 蠟 燭 , 與<br />

大 家 一 同 歌 唱 露 德 聖 母 頌 ,<br />

最 後 降 福 大 家 。 因 為 當 天 是<br />

教 宗 生 日 , 所 以 禮 儀 結 束 後<br />

大 會 安 排 了 一 場 絢 麗 的 煙 火<br />

表 演 , 為 教 宗 祝 壽 , 並 為 這<br />

為 期 三 天 的 盛 會 畫 上 完 美 的<br />

句 點 。<br />

行 後 感<br />

這 次 開 會 朝 聖 之 旅 , 雖 是 一<br />

星 期 前 臨 危 受 命 , 行 前 心 中<br />

雖 有 一 些 忐 忑 不 安 的 心 情 ,<br />

但 是 天 主 的 恩 寵 滿 被 隨 行 ,<br />

讓 我 感 受 到 天 主 臨 在 的 力<br />

量 , 實 在 是 一 趟 美 妙 的 朝 聖<br />

之 行 。<br />

一 下 飛 機 , 因 為 不 曾 自 由 行<br />

進 出 羅 馬 , 不 想 付 太 貴 的 接<br />

機 服 務 。 我 與 外 子 正 要 搭 機<br />

場 快 捷 到 市 區 。 入 口 時 , 隨<br />

口 確 認 方 向 , 一 名 男 子 正 好<br />

問 我 們 的 目 的 地 是 哪 裡 。 剛<br />

好 有 六 名 旅 客 正 等 著 去 梵 蒂<br />

岡 , 一 人 十 二 歐 元 , 共 乘 去<br />

梵 蒂 岡 就 成 交 了 。 到 了 飯 店<br />

門 口 , 才 發 現 訂 的 飯 店 與 會<br />

議 廳 只 有 一 牆 之 隔 , 實 在 樂<br />

不 可 支 。 下 了 行 李 , 馬 上 去<br />

報 到 。 在 那 裡 遇 到 了 教 廷 的<br />

Charles 神 父 ( 唯 一 英 語 講 的 最<br />

好 的 )。 他 特 別 提 到 主 教 團<br />

交 代 要 照 顧 我 們 , 心 中 感 覺<br />

遇 到 了 天 使 。 隨 後 進 入 伯 多<br />

祿 大 殿 在 聖 若 瑟 堂 望 彌 撒 。<br />

在 領 聖 體 時 , 分 送 到 了 神 父<br />

在 祭 台 上 祝 聖 的 聖 體 , 內 心<br />

很 感 動 , 覺 得 天 主 在 照 顧 歡<br />

迎 遠 道 而 來 的 信 友 。<br />

第 一 天 早 上 的 會 議 , 主 教 的<br />

演 講 很 精 彩 。 到 了 下 午 中 場<br />

休 息 時 間 , 因 為 巧 遇 Charles 神<br />

父 , 忽 然 想 起 隔 日 早 上 在 地<br />

下 墓 穴 的 彌 撒 不 知 如 何 去 ,<br />

就 詢 問 他 。 他 二 話 不 說 , 就<br />

指 示 旁 邊 一 位 神 父 , 那 位 神<br />

父 從 他 口 袋 中 掏 出 二 張 票 。<br />

那 時 我 才 恍 然 大 悟 , 原 來 那<br />

是 要 票 才 能 去 的 彌 撒 ( 只 能 容<br />

下 八 十 人 )。 第 二 天 帶 著 興 奮<br />

的 心 情 去 望 彌 撒 。 在 路 上 遇<br />

到 了 二 位 大 陸 來 的 史 修 女 與<br />

余 修 女 , 等 著 她 們 的 總 會 長<br />

去 參 加 彌 撒 。 她 們 在 拉 特 朗<br />

大 學 讀 書 ( 露 徳 聖 母 遊 行 時 ,<br />

協 助 為 我 們 解 說 帶 領 者 祈 禱<br />

的 意 向 ) 。 隨 後 我 們 在 大 殿<br />

等 著 , 也 看 不 到 認 識 的 人 。<br />

正 發 愁 的 時 候 , 有 位 主 教 走<br />

過 來 , 竟 用 流 利 的 國 語 說 :<br />

「 來 望 彌 撒 」 當 時 驚 訝 的<br />

說 不 出 話 來 。 他 領 我 們 入 地<br />

下 墓 , 盛 情 簡 直 比 衛 隊 還 熱<br />

切 , 覺 得 又 遇 到 了 天 使 。 在<br />

石 墓 中 的 彌 撒 , 沐 浴 在 天 主<br />

的 慈 愛 裡 。 感 謝 若 望 保 祿 二<br />

世 為 我 們 祈 求 的 恩 典 。<br />

早 上 的 會 議 開 始 時 , 介 紹 了<br />

台 灣 來 的 楊 署 長 , 非 常 地 驚<br />

訝 。 休 息 時 終 於 有 機 會 盡<br />

「 地 主 之 誼 」 領 署 長 、 參 事<br />

參 觀 一 下 環 境 及 喝 咖 啡 。 中<br />

午 大 使 館 邀 請 大 家 與 大 使 及<br />

署 長 共 進 午 餐 。 最 終 這 次 參<br />

加 會 議 的 所 有 人 聚 首 一 起 ,<br />

署 長 、 參 事 、 陳 教 授 、 法 師<br />

及 我 們 。 飯 後 署 長 在 一 樓 聖<br />

物 店 買 了 苦 像 十 字 架 。 揣 想<br />

是 否 署 長 也 是 教 友 原 來 署<br />

長 夫 人 與 女 兒 是 長 老 會 信<br />

友 。 我 趕 緊 補 充 基 督 教 通 常<br />

不 用 苦 像 十 字 架 。 署 長 風 趣<br />

地 回 答 :「 那 有 什 麼 關 係 <br />

都 是 十 字 架 !」 心 想 署 長 真<br />

是 英 明 啊 !<br />

第 二 天 會 議 結 束 , 如 釋 重<br />

負 。 晚 上 有 一 場 音 樂 會 , 很<br />

高 興 參 加 。 入 場 時 看 見 一 位<br />

東 方 神 父 , 心 想 不 知 從 哪 個<br />

國 家 來 的 。 一 問 才 知 是 台 灣<br />

來 的 邱 神 父 。 想 起 十 年 前 隨<br />

堂 區 李 鴻 皋 神 父 來 朝 聖 , 遇<br />

到 有 位 神 父 在 大 殿 聽 告 解 ,<br />

細 問 才 知 真 是 十 年 前 認 識 的<br />

邱 神 父 。 覺 得 太 不 可 思 議 ,<br />

因 聖 神 的 帶 領 , 又 遇 到 了 天<br />

使 。 隔 天 參 加 教 宗 主 禮 彌 撒<br />

後 , 神 父 帶 我 們 參 觀 教 宗 御<br />

花 園 、 行 政 廳 、 俯 瞰 整 個 梵<br />

蒂 岡 風 景 , 覺 得 恩 澤 滿 被 、<br />

美 不 勝 收 。<br />

最 後 一 天 是 靈 性 的 祈 禱 感 恩<br />

的 高 峰 。 在 聖 伯 爾 納 德 的 聖<br />

髑 遊 行 及 露 德 聖 母 遊 行 時 ,<br />

我 也 特 別 把 在 醫 院 受 到 病 痛<br />

的 兄 弟 姐 妹 的 求 恩 意 向 , 託<br />

給 至 愛 的 母 親 及 聖 伯 爾 納<br />

德 , 為 他 們 轉 求 。 記 得 十 年<br />

前 曾 經 到 露 德 朝 聖 , 從 沒 想<br />

過 十 年 後 會 在 梵 蒂 岡 參 加 露<br />

德 聖 母 顯 現 日 的 遊 行 。 十 年<br />

前 在 露 德 得 到 了 聖 母 的 恩<br />

典 , 十 年 後 是 另 一 段 信 仰 旅<br />

程 恩 澤 的 開 始 。 帶 著 天 主 的<br />

恩 典 、 聖 母 的 祝 福 、 聖 伯 爾<br />

納 德 的 及 若 望 保 祿 二 世 的 轉<br />

求 , 把 信 仰 的 恩 澤 化 為 愛 的<br />

行 動 , 服 務 陪 伴 醫 院 病 苦 中<br />

的 人 。 然 而 在 這 個 旅 程 中 ,<br />

我 們 一 點 也 不 孤 單 。 因 為 有<br />

教 會 成 為 我 們 有 力 的 後 盾 。<br />

有 世 界 各 地 不 同 的 信 友 彼 此<br />

代 禱 。 在 這 次 的 會 議 中 , 雖<br />

然 東 方 面 孔 極 少 , 但 是 一 點<br />

也 不 感 到 孤 立 。 彌 撒 中 我 們<br />

有 同 一 的 天 主 , 有 著 相 同 的<br />

信 仰 。 唸 玫 瑰 經 時 , 語 言 雖<br />

不 同 , 但 聖 母 帶 著 我 們 每 個<br />

人 走 向 天 主 。 教 宗 的 祝 福 ,<br />

成 為 我 們 旅 途 中 的 力 量 。 我<br />

深 深 感 到 自 己 是 天 主 的 子<br />

民 。 信 靠 上 主 的 人 真 是 有<br />

福 !<br />

“Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life”<br />

Dear Friends,<br />

This year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the inauguration of World<br />

Youth Day in response to the desire of the Venerable John Paul II for an<br />

annual gathering of young people of faith from throughout the world. It<br />

was a prophetic initiative that has borne abundant fruits, enabling the new<br />

generations of Christians to meet one another, to listen to the Word of God,<br />

to discover the beauty of the Church, and to have a deep experience of faith.<br />

This led many of them in turn to decide to give themselves completely to<br />

Christ.<br />

The present 25th World Youth Day is one step along the way leading to<br />

the next international encounter of young people, scheduled for Madrid in<br />

August <strong>20</strong>11. I hope that many of you will be there to experience this gracefilled<br />

event.<br />

To prepare ourselves for this celebration, I would like to offer you some<br />

reflections on this year’s theme: “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit<br />

eternal life” (Mk 10:17). It is drawn from Gospel passage where Jesus<br />

meets the rich young man. It is a theme that Pope John Paul II reflected on<br />

in 1985, in a very beautiful Letter, the first ever addressed to young people.<br />

1. Jesus meets a young man<br />

“As [Jesus] was setting out on a journey” – the Gospel of Saint Mark tells<br />

us – “a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, ‘Good teacher,<br />

what must I do to inherit eternal life’ Jesus answered him, ‘Why do you<br />

call me good No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments:<br />

You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you<br />

shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honour your father<br />

and your mother.’ He replied and said to him, ‘Teacher, all of these I have<br />

observed from my youth’. Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to<br />

him, ‘You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the<br />

poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me’. At that<br />

statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions”<br />

(Mk 10: 17-22).<br />

This Gospel passage shows us clearly how much Jesus was concerned with<br />

young people, with all of you, with your expectations and your hopes, and<br />

it shows how much he wants to meet you personally and to engage each<br />

of you in conversation. Christ interrupted his journey to stop and answer<br />

the young man’s question. He gave his full attention to this youth who was<br />

moved with an ardent desire to speak to the “good Teacher” and to learn<br />

from him how to journey through life. My Predecessor used this Gospel<br />

passage to urge each of you to “develop your own conversation with Christ<br />

– a conversation which is of fundamental and essential importance for a<br />

young person” (Letter to Young People, No. 2).<br />

2. Jesus looked at him and loved him<br />

In his Gospel account, Saint Mark emphasises that “Jesus, looking at him,<br />

loved him” (Mk 10: 21). The Lord’s gaze is at the heart of this very special<br />

encounter and the whole Christian experience. To be sure, Christianity is not<br />

primarily a moral code. It is an experience of Jesus Christ who loves each of<br />

us personally, young and old, poor and rich. He loves us even when we turn<br />

away from him.<br />

When Pope John Paul II commented on this scene, he turned to you and<br />

added: “May you experience a look like that! May you experience the truth<br />

that he, Christ, looks upon you with love!” (Letter to Young People, No. 7).<br />

It was love, revealed on the Cross so completely and totally, that led Saint<br />

Paul to write in amazement: “He loved me and gave himself up for me”<br />

(Gal 2:<strong>20</strong>). Pope John Paul II wrote that “the awareness that the Father has<br />

always loved us in his Son, that Christ always loves each of us, becomes<br />

a solid support for our whole human existence” (ibid.). It enables us to<br />

overcome all our trials: the realization of our sins, our sufferings and our<br />

moments of discouragement.<br />

In this love we find the source of all Christian life and the basic reason for<br />

evangelization: if we have really encountered Jesus, we cannot help but bear<br />

witness to him before those who have not yet met his gaze!<br />

3. Finding a plan in life<br />

If we look at the young man in the Gospel, we can see that he is much like<br />

each of you. You too are rich in talents, energy, dreams and hopes. These are<br />

resources which you have in abundance! Your age itself is a great treasure,<br />

not only for yourselves but for others too, for the Church and for the world.<br />

The rich young man asks Jesus: “What must I do” The time of life which<br />

you are going through is one of discovery: discovery of the gifts which God<br />

has bestowed upon you and your own responsibilities. It is also a time when<br />

you are making crucial choices about how you will live your lives. So it is<br />

a time to think about the real meaning of life and to ask yourselves: “Am I<br />

satisfied with my life Is there something missing”<br />

Like the young man in the Gospel story, perhaps you too are experiencing<br />

situations of uncertainty, anxiety or suffering, and are yearning for<br />

something more than a life of mediocrity. It makes you ask yourselves: “What<br />

makes a life successful What do I need to do How should I plan my life<br />

“What must I do for my life to have full value and full meaning” (ibid., No.<br />

3).<br />

Do not be afraid to ask yourselves these questions! Far from troubling you,<br />

they are giving voice to the great aspirations that you hold in your hearts.<br />

That is why you should listen to them. The answers you give to them must<br />

not be superficial, but capable of satisfying the longing you truly feel for life<br />

and happiness.<br />

In order to discover the life-project that will make you completely happy,<br />

listen to God. He has a loving plan for each one of you. You can confidently<br />

ask him: “Lord, what is your plan, as Creator and Father, for my life What<br />

is your will I want to carry it out”. You can be certain that he will answer<br />

you. Do not be afraid of his answer! “For God is greater than our hearts and<br />

knows everything” (1 Jn 3:<strong>20</strong>).<br />

4. Come and follow me!<br />

Jesus invites the rich young man to do much more than merely satisfy his<br />

aspirations and personal plans. He says to him: “Come and follow me!”<br />

The Christian vocation derives from a love-filled invitation made by the<br />

Lord, and it can be lived out only by a love-filled response: “Jesus invites<br />

his disciples to give their lives completely, without calculation or personal<br />

interest, with unreserved trust in God. The saints accept this demanding<br />

invitation and set out with humble docility in following the crucified and<br />

risen Christ. Their perfection, in the logic of faith which is at times humanly<br />

incomprehensible, consists in no longer putting themselves at the centre<br />

but in choosing to go against the tide, by living in line with the Gospel”<br />

(Benedict XVI, Homily at Canonizations, 11 October <strong>20</strong>09).<br />

Following the example of so many of Christ’s disciples, may you too, dear<br />

friends, joyfully welcome his invitation to follow him, and so live your lives<br />

intensely and fruitfully in this world. Through Baptism, in fact, he calls each<br />

of us to follow him concretely, to love him above all things and to serve<br />

him in our brothers and sisters. The rich young man, unfortunately, did not<br />

accept Jesus’ invitation and he went away saddened. He did not find the<br />

courage to leave behind his material goods in order to find the far greater<br />

good proposed by Jesus.<br />

The sadness experienced by the rich young man in the Gospel story is the<br />

sadness that arises in the heart of all those who lack the courage to follow<br />

Christ and to make the right choice. Yet it is never too late to respond to<br />

him!<br />

Jesus never tires of turning to us with love and calling us to be his disciples;<br />

to some, however, he proposes an even more radical choice. In this Year<br />

for Priests, I would like to urge young men and boys to consider if the Lord<br />

is inviting them to a greater gift, along the path of priestly ministry. I ask<br />

them to be willing to embrace with generosity and enthusiasm this sign of<br />

a special love and to embark on the necessary path of discernment with the<br />

help of a priest or a spiritual director. Do not be afraid, then, dear young<br />

men and women, if the Lord is calling you to the religious, monastic or<br />

missionary life, or a life of special consecration: He knows how to bestow<br />

deep joy upon those who respond to him with courage!<br />

I also invite those who feel called to marriage to embrace this vocation with<br />

faith, working to lay a solid foundation for a love that is great, faithful and<br />

receptive to the gift of life. This vocation is a treasure and grace for society<br />

and for the Church.<br />

5. Directed towards eternal life<br />

“What must I do to inherit eternal life”. This question which the young<br />

man in the Gospel asks may seem far from the concerns of many young<br />

people today. As my Predecessor observed, “Are we not the generation<br />

whose horizon of existence is completely filled by the world and temporal<br />

progress (Letter to Young People, No. 5). Yet, the question of “eternal life”<br />

returns at certain painful moments of our lives, as when we suffer the loss of<br />

someone close to us or experience failure.<br />

But what is the “eternal life” to which the rich young man is referring<br />

Jesus describes it to us when he says to his disciples: “But I will see you<br />

again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from<br />

you” (Jn 16: 22). These words point to an exciting possibility of unending<br />

happiness, to the joy of being surrounded by God’s love for ever.<br />

Wondering about the definitive future awaiting each of us gives full meaning<br />

to our existence. It directs our life plan towards horizons that are not limited<br />

and fleeting, but broad and deep, and which motivate us to love this world<br />

which God loves so deeply, to devote ourselves to its development with the<br />

freedom and joy born of faith and hope. Against these horizons we do not<br />

see earthly reality as absolute, and we sense that God is preparing a greater<br />

future for us. In this way we can say with Saint Augustine: “Let us long for<br />

our home on high, let us pine for our home in heaven, let us feel that we<br />

are strangers here” (Tractates on the Gospel of Saint John, Homily 35:9).<br />

His gaze fixed on eternal life, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, who died in<br />

1925 at the age of 24, could say: “I want to live and not simply exist!” On<br />

a photograph taken while mountain-climbing, he wrote to a friend: “To the<br />

heights”, referring not only to Christian perfection but also to eternal life.<br />

Dear young friends, I urge you to keep this perspective in developing your<br />

life plan: we are called to eternity. God created us to be with him, for ever.<br />

This will help you to make meaningful decisions and live a beautiful life.<br />

6. The commandments, the way to authentic love<br />

Jesus reminded the rich young man that obedience to the Ten<br />

Commandments is necessary in order to “inherit eternal life”. The<br />

Commandments are essential points of reference if we are to live in love,<br />

to distinguish clearly between good and evil, and to build a life plan<br />

that is solid and enduring. Jesus is asking you too whether you know the<br />

Commandments, whether you are trying to form your conscience according<br />

to God’s law, and putting the Commandments into practice.<br />

Needless to say, these are questions that go against the grain in today’s<br />

world, which advocates a freedom detached from values, rules and<br />

objective norms, and which encourages people to refuse to place limits<br />

on their immediate desires. But this is not the way to true freedom. It leds<br />

people to become enslaved to themselves, to their immediate desires, to<br />

idols like power, money, unbridled pleasure and the entrapments of the<br />

world. It stifles their inborn vocation to love.<br />

God gives us the Commandments because he wants to teach us true<br />

freedom. He wants to build a Kingdom of love, justice and peace together<br />

with us. When we listen to the Commandments and put them into practice,<br />

it does not mean that we become estranged from ourselves, but that we find<br />

the way to freedom and authentic love. The commandments do not place<br />

limits on happiness, but rather show us how to find it. At the beginning of<br />

the conversation with the rich young man, Jesus reminds him that the law<br />

which God gives is itself good, because “God is good”.<br />

7. We need you<br />

Being young today means having to face many problems due to<br />

unemployment and the lack of clear ideas and real possibilities for the<br />

future. At times you can have the impression of being powerless in the face<br />

of current crises and their repercussions. Despite these difficulties, do not<br />

let yourselves be discouraged, and do not give up on your dreams! Instead,<br />

cultivate all the more your heart’s great desire for fellowship, justice and<br />

peace. The future is in the hands of those who know how to seek and find<br />

sound reasons for life and hope. If you are willing, the future lies in your<br />

hands, because the talents and gifts that the Lord has placed in your hearts,<br />

shaped by an encounter with Christ, can bring real hope to the world! It<br />

is faith in his love that, by making you stronger and more generous, will<br />

give you courage to face serenely the path of life and to take on family<br />

and professional responsibilities. Try hard to build your future by paying<br />

serious attention to your personal development and your studies, so that<br />

you will be able to serve the common good competently and generously.<br />

In my recent Encyclical Letter on integral human development, Caritas<br />

in Veritate, I listed some of the great and urgent challenges essential<br />

for the life of our world: the use of the earth’s resources and respect for<br />

ecology, the fair distribution of goods and control of financial mechanisms,<br />

solidarity with poor countries within our human family, the fight against<br />

world hunger, greater respect for the dignity of human labour, service to the<br />

culture of life, the building of peace between peoples, interfaith dialogue,<br />

and the proper use of social communications.<br />

These are challenges to which you are called to respond in order to<br />

build a more just and fraternal world. They are challenges that call for a<br />

demanding and passionate life plan, in which you use all your many gifts<br />

in accordance with the plan that God has for each of you. It is not a matter<br />

of accompanishing heroic or extraordinary acts. It means allowing your<br />

talents and abilities to flourish, and trying to make constant progress in<br />

faith and love.<br />

In this Year for Priests, I ask you to learn about the lives of the saints, and<br />

in particular of those saints who were priests. You will see how God was<br />

their guide and how they made their way through each day in faith, in hope<br />

and in love. Christ is calling each of you to work with him and to take up<br />

your responsibilities in order to build the civilization of love. If you follow<br />

his Word, it will light up your path and lead you to high goals that will give<br />

joy and full meaning to your lives.<br />

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, watch over and<br />

protect you. With the assurance of my prayers, and with great affection, I<br />

send my blessing to all of you.<br />

“Let us sing to the Lord, glorious his triumph!” (Liturgy of the Hours,<br />

Easter, Office of Readings, Antiphon 1).<br />

Dear Brothers and Sisters,<br />

I bring you the Easter proclamation in these words of the Liturgy, which<br />

echo the ancient hymn of praise sung by the Israelites after crossing the<br />

Red Sea. It is recounted in the Book of Exodus (cf 15:19-21) that when<br />

they had crossed the sea on dry land, and saw the Egyptians submerged by<br />

the waters, Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron, and the other women<br />

sang and danced to this song of joy: “Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed<br />

wonderfully: horse and rider he has thrown into the sea!” Christians<br />

throughout the world repeat this canticle at the Easter Vigil, and a special<br />

prayer explains its meaning; a prayer that now, in the full light of the<br />

resurrection, we joyfully make our own: “Father, even today we see the<br />

wonders of the miracles you worked long ago. You once saved a single<br />

nation from slavery, and now you offer that salvation to all through baptism.<br />

May the peoples of the world become true sons of Abraham and prove<br />

worthy of the heritage of Israel.”<br />

The Gospel has revealed to us the fulfilment of the ancient figures: in his<br />

death and resurrection, Jesus Christ has freed us from the radical slavery of<br />

sin and opened for us the way towards the promised land, the Kingdom of<br />

God, the universal Kingdom of justice, love and peace. This “exodus” takes<br />

place first of all within man himself, and it consists in a new birth in the<br />

Holy Spirit, the effect of the baptism that Christ has given us in his Paschal<br />

Mystery. The old man yields his place to the new man; the old life is left<br />

behind, and a new life can begin (cf. Rom 6:4). But this spiritual “exodus”<br />

is the beginning of an integral liberation, capable of renewing us in every<br />

dimension – human, personal and social.<br />

Yes, my brothers and sisters, Easter is the true salvation of humanity! If<br />

Christ – the Lamb of God – had not poured out his blood for us, we would<br />

be without hope, our destiny and the destiny of the whole world would<br />

inevitably be death. But Easter has reversed that trend: Christ’s resurrection<br />

is a new creation, like a graft that can regenerate the whole plant. It is an<br />

event that has profoundly changed the course of history, tipping the scales<br />

once and for all on the side of good, of life, of pardon. We are free, we are<br />

saved! Hence from deep within our hearts we cry out: “Let us sing to the<br />

Lord: glorious his triumph!”<br />

The Christian people, having emerged from the waters of baptism, is sent<br />

out to the whole world to bear witness to this salvation, to bring to all<br />

people the fruit of Easter, which consists in a new life, freed from sin and<br />

restored to its original beauty, to its goodness and truth. Continually, in the<br />

course of two thousand years, Christians – especially saints – have made<br />

history fruitful with their lived experience of Easter. The Church is the<br />

people of the Exodus, because she constantly lives the Paschal Mystery and<br />

disseminates its renewing power in every time and place. In our days too,<br />

humanity needs an “exodus”, not just superficial adjustment, but a spiritual<br />

and moral conversion. It needs the salvation of the Gospel, so as to emerge<br />

from a profound crisis, one which requires deep change, beginning with<br />

consciences.<br />

I pray to the Lord Jesus that in the Middle East, and especially in the land<br />

sanctified by his death and resurrection, the peoples will accomplish a true<br />

and definitive “exodus” from war and violence to peace and concord. To the<br />

Christian communities who are experiencing trials and sufferings, especially<br />

in Iraq, the Risen Lord repeats those consoling and encouraging words that<br />

he addressed to the Apostles in the Upper Room: “Peace be with you!” (Jn<br />

<strong>20</strong>:21).<br />

For the countries in Latin America and the Caribbean that are seeing a<br />

dangerous resurgence of crimes linked to drug trafficking, let Easter signal<br />

the victory of peaceful coexistence and respect for the common good.<br />

May the beloved people of Haiti, devastated by the appalling tragedy of<br />

the earthquake, accomplish their own “exodus” from mourning and from<br />

despair to a new hope, supported by international solidarity. May the<br />

beloved citizens of Chile, who have had to endure another grave catastrophe,<br />

set about the task of reconstruction with tenacity, supported by their faith.<br />

In the strength of the risen Jesus, may the conflicts in Africa come to an end,<br />

conflicts which continue to cause destruction and suffering, and may peace<br />

and reconciliation be attained, as guarantees of development. In particular I<br />

entrust to the Lord the future of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea<br />

and Nigeria.<br />

May the Risen Lord sustain the Christians who suffer persecution and even<br />

death for their faith, as for example in Pakistan. To the countries afflicted<br />

by terrorism and by social and religious discrimination, may He grant the<br />

strength to undertake the work of building dialogue and serene coexistence.<br />

To the leaders of nations, may Easter bring light and strength, so that<br />

economic and financial activity may finally be driven by the criteria of truth,<br />

justice and fraternal aid. May the saving power of Christ’s resurrection fill<br />

all of humanity, so that it may overcome the multiple tragic expressions of<br />

a “culture of death” which are becoming increasingly widespread, so as to<br />

build a future of love and truth in which every human life is respected and<br />

welcomed.<br />

Dear brothers and sisters, Easter does not work magic. Just as the Israelites<br />

found the desert awaiting them on the far side of the Red Sea, so the<br />

Church, after the resurrection, always finds history filled with joy and hope,<br />

grief and anguish. And yet, this history is changed, it is marked by a new<br />

and eternal covenant, it is truly open to the future. For this reason, saved<br />

by hope, let us continue our pilgrimage, bearing in our hearts the song that<br />

is ancient and yet ever new: “Let us sing to the Lord: glorious his triumph!<br />

Dear priests, consecrated persons belonging to religious communities and<br />

secular institutes, and faithful in Christ,<br />

May the loving God grant you during this New Year peace, good health<br />

and joy!<br />

I. CONTINUE THE SPIRIT OF THE CELEBRATION OF<br />

THE 150th ANNIVERSARY<br />

The Church in Taiwan successfully celebrated the 150th anniversary of<br />

evangelization of Taiwan at the thanksgiving ceremony held in the National<br />

Taiwan Sport Stadium, Linkou. Those who attended were all in high spirit<br />

and until now they still kept a very ardent enthusiasm. This great event that<br />

covers such amplitude is a rare scene recently experienced by the Catholic<br />

Church. It not only enhanced the nearness of the faithful towards the<br />

Church, but also sparked the missionary zeal for evangelization.<br />

THE REAL TREASURES OF THE CHURCH<br />

The real treasures of the Church are not the properties that the Church<br />

possesses, nor the towering majestic churches, nor the beautiful religious<br />

arts, the impressive liturgy… the real treasure is Jesus Christ who founded<br />

the Church and to whom she belongs. Moreover, it is the Lord Jesus<br />

Christ whom the world needs. Thus, all the activities of the Church have<br />

the ultimate goal to bring Christ to others: “to preach to the Gentiles the<br />

inscrutable riches of Christ…” (Eph. 3:8). Only Jesus Christ is the hope and<br />

Savior of mankind, the message and content of evangelization.<br />

INVOLVEMENT AND COMMITMENT OF THE PEOPLE OF GOD<br />

The reason why the Church exists is to preach the Gospel (cf. Vatican<br />

II: Lumen Gentium #16-17). Therefore, every member of the Church has<br />

a mission and a responsibility to evangelize. The bishop is the pillar who<br />

bears the responsibility of the entire work of evangelization. However,<br />

priests and religious should arouse the missionary zeal of the people of<br />

God, especially the lay people, because the latter are in direct contact with<br />

the society and culture. They have even a more important, practical and<br />

concrete missionary task.<br />

A MORE VIRTUOUS SPIRITUAL LIFE<br />

The source of all missionary work of the Church is Jesus Christ who<br />

was sent by the Father. The effectiveness of evangelization by the Church<br />

depends on the union between each Church member and Christ in daily life.<br />

“Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without<br />

me you can do nothing.” (Jn 15:5) This kind of spiritual life, which is union<br />

with Christ, draws its nourishment through an active participation in the<br />

sacraments and liturgies of the Church. Every Christian cannot let his life<br />

and his union with Christ be dissociated. He should accomplish the duty<br />

which is inherent to his state according to the will of God, doing ordinary or<br />

extraordinary things with a heart full love for God and neighbor, as St. Paul<br />

says: “Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of<br />

the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Col 3:17).<br />

This kind of life needs to frequently practice the three supernatural virtues<br />

of faith, hope and charity. The work of evangelization needs holy people<br />

(cf. John Paul II, “Redemptoris Missio” # 90). Therefore, every Christian<br />

should make a regular examination of conscience, cultivate virtues and do<br />

works of charity. The Christian should put an end to the seven venial sins of<br />

pride, envy, gluttony, sloth, lust, wrath, and avarice and replace them with<br />

the three supernatural virtues of faith, hope and charity, and the four cardinal<br />

virtues of courage, prudence, justice and temperance. Without these virtues,<br />

one cannot live an authentic Christian life nor can one glorify God. There<br />

will not be any result and fruit of evangelization.<br />

HOLISTIC FORMATION<br />

In today’s cultural environment imbued with various ways of thinking<br />

and ideologies, in order to effectively explain to non-Christians the reason of<br />

one’s hope (see 1 Pt. 3:15), every Christian needs to increase his knowledge<br />

regarding the different aspects of the Church’s doctrine, the Holy Scriptures<br />

and theology, so as to have a better understanding of the riches of one’s<br />

faith. Our Lord Jesus Christ asked his disciples: “Go, therefore, and make<br />

disciples of all nations… teach them to observe all that I have commanded<br />

you.” (Mt. 28:19-<strong>20</strong>) Therefore, before we go and spread the Good News,<br />

we first need to understand what Jesus “has taught us”. For this reason, the<br />

faithful should try to choose courses, lectures, books, magazines, websites<br />

and related materials that are suitable to one’s needs to deepen one’s<br />

understanding of the doctrines of the Church and sacred scriptures so that<br />

one become more confident and courageous to preach and proclaim.<br />

INTERRELIGIOUS DIALOGUES CANNOT REPLACE THE<br />

KERYGMA<br />

Taiwan is a society with pluralistic beliefs. We should have a cordial<br />

dialogue and communication with our brothers and sisters of other religions.<br />

But religious dialogue cannot replace the kerygma. One should not avoid<br />

speaking of Jesus Christ in our interreligious dialogues. Jesus Christ was<br />

born for each one of us. He sacrificed his life for every single one of us. He<br />

is the only “way, truth and life” (Jn 14:6) of mankind. Other people have no<br />

Christian faith because they have never heard of Jesus Christ. Although we<br />

have to respect the beliefs of others, we cannot compromise the truth that<br />

Jesus Christ is the only Mediator, the only Redeemer. Therefore, sharing<br />

the Christian faith with the person with whom we dialogue, bringing God to<br />

them and bringing them to God, means keeping the commandment to love<br />

God and to love others at the same time and is a way of evangelization.<br />

SUCCESSFUL EVANGELIZATION<br />

The Holy Spirit of Christ is the one who makes the work of<br />

evangelization effective. This is why after the coming of the Holy Spirit on<br />

the feast of Pentecost, the apostles started to evangelize without fear and<br />

reaped bountiful fruits. Without the help of the Holy Spirit, we have no<br />

force to evangelize. We may toil in evangelizing for a long time, but get no<br />

obvious results, like Peter who said to Jesus: “Master, we have worked hard<br />

all night and have caught nothing.” (Lk 5:5) Nevertheless, precisely at this<br />

very moment, we must be like St. Peter and say to Jesus Christ, the Master<br />

of evangelization: “but at your command I will lower the nets." (Lk 5:6)<br />

Yes, we must constantly pray, believing deeply that when the time comes,<br />

the Lord Jesus will enable us to bear fruit far beyond our hard toil. (Lk<br />

5:6-7)<br />

II. THE YEAR FOR PRIESTS<br />

Priests are the most important cooperators of the bishops. They are<br />

the clergy of God’s mercy in the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and<br />

Reconciliation. In this Year for Priests, let us give the clergy our warmest<br />

support and encouragement. Today when the entire people of God are<br />

to participate in the work of evangelization, the zeal and enthusiasm<br />

of priests to evangelize are more than necessary. There is a shortage of<br />

priestly vocations in the Church today. Priests and lay people should make<br />

a personal reflection and make improvements. When priests and lay people<br />

have different opinion at work, or their ways of doing things are different,<br />

this is not something surprising but can test the depths of our Christian<br />

spirit. Christ-centered communities make the truth of Christ prevail.<br />

Being the “elder” of a parish and a community, the priest should be a<br />

figure of unity and let the spirit of cooperation among lay people integrate<br />

into the community. The priest should not have outbursts of emotion<br />

towards the personnel, nor should he be an “opportunist” or judge people<br />

by appearance. In our present society where there is a growing disparity<br />

between the rich and the poor, where many people in the world are suffering<br />

from hunger and starvation, the ascetic spirit of cloistered priests and<br />

religious who live a life without worldly desires is ever more meaningful.<br />

Let us “endure and enjoy, enjoy and endure”, encouraging mutually to be<br />

strong witnesses of the Gospel.<br />

For many faithful who lead busy lives, the Sunday homily is the only<br />

moment where they find spiritual nourishment from the Word of God.<br />

Carefully prepared homilies of priests have deep impact on the spiritual life<br />

of the faithful and even on the spiritual life of the whole parish community.<br />

Aside from this, priests should continue to learn, make further studies,<br />

acquire knowledge on theology and the Sacred Scriptures, and learn some<br />

methodologies on how to give homily. Moreover, the priests, aside from<br />

preparing well the Sunday homily, should also celebrate the entire Mass<br />

with his whole heart and soul to convey its sacredness. The celebration of<br />

Mass should not be taken lightly.<br />

We hold this treasure, Christ, in earthen vessels (2 Cor 4:7). Without the<br />

help of the daily Bread, we are weak and we succumb easily to temptations.<br />

Priests should strengthen their prayer life (Mass, Office of Readings, Sacred<br />

Scriptures, Holy Rosary etc.) The faithful should also pray more for their<br />

shepherds, give them moral support so that they grow each day in holiness<br />

and serve God’s flock with joy. Through their joy, they may attract more<br />

young people to follow their examples to live the vocation of consecrated<br />

life. We hope that during this New Year, Catholic parents and different<br />

organizations in the Church will encourage young people who have the<br />

spirit of prayer and service to consider following the priestly vocation, to<br />

address the shortage of vocations in Taiwan.<br />

III. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION<br />

The theme of Pope Benedict XVI’s World Day of Peace Message this<br />

year is “If you want to cultivate peace, protect creation”. Environmental<br />

protection is an urgent issue of global concern today. The Pope pointed<br />

out: “Consequently, “when ‘human ecology’ is respected within society,<br />

environmental ecology also benefits”. Because the multiple crises mankind<br />

is facing, such as climate change, desertification, reduced productivity<br />

of agricultural land, pollution of rivers and underwater sources, loss of<br />

biodiversity, deforestations and others, these ecological crises bring about<br />

economic crisis, food crisis, and social crisis. In fact, all are related to the<br />

moral crisis of mankind.<br />

The problem lies in the heart of the people: when human beings lose<br />

the sense of responsibility of the mission God has entrusted to them, they<br />

become the exploiters of the creation, they become the authoritarian rulers<br />

of the earth. Today, many people forget that the whole creation constitutes<br />

a heritage for all mankind. If we over-exploit the natural resources of the<br />

world today, we will let the present generation, and more so, the generations<br />

to come fall into the crisis of not having anything left for them.<br />

We implore the entire people of God in Taiwan to respond to the appeal<br />

of the Pope, to turn the tide of moral crisis before it gets worst, to keep away<br />

from greed, to be loving and fervent in sharing, and to make efforts to live a<br />

frugal life. Environmental protection should start from oneself, from one’s<br />

own family. We also make an appeal to all our faithful to start with good<br />

examples and to be a model in the movements promoted by the Taiwan<br />

government to save energy and reduce carbon emissions.<br />

CONCLUSION<br />

There are still many people in our society who need the Gospel of Christ.<br />

As Christians in Taiwan, we should become bearers of the Gospel. As we<br />

start a new year, we should be more active in preaching and proclaiming<br />

Jesus Christ as Savior. We should be more creative in organizing activities<br />

to promote evangelization. We should all the more intensify our spiritual<br />

life and take the initiative to have further studies, do research, know the<br />

doctrines of the Church, study the Sacred Scriptures, and theology. Only<br />

then can we be confident in spreading the Good News. We hope that priests<br />

as pastors grow deeper in virtues and in wisdom. May they lead the faithful<br />

of Taiwan to spread the light and love of Christ Jesus, so that the world in<br />

the midst of crisis and anxieties may have HOPE.<br />

Let us entrust this new year, a year of commitment and revival, with all our<br />

spiritual needs to the intercession of our Merciful Mother Mary.<br />

Happy New Year! May the Lord’s blessings descend abundantly over!<br />

Thank you very much for inviting me to join you on this program. I'm very<br />

grateful for your invitation and happy to be here.<br />

1. The Apostolic Nunciature, the Vatican and the Holy See, which is the<br />

official title<br />

You’re not the first person to ask me this question. The terminology used in<br />

the Catholic Church can be confusing. When we say "Holy See", we mean<br />

the umbrella organization which includes the entire Catholic Church around<br />

the world and the tiny Vatican City State. More specifically, the "Holy See"<br />

is the central government of the Catholic Church – popularly known as "the<br />

Vatican". Vatican City is the capital of the Vatican City State. We often<br />

refer to a country by the name of its capital. In these past months, here in<br />

Taipei, there have been several international seminars, entitled: “Taipei-<br />

Washington-Beijing Relations.” Of course, what is being discussed is the<br />

relationship between Taiwan, the United States, and China. But the correct<br />

title is: the Holy See.<br />

Now, about the meaning of Apostolic Nunciature: when countries<br />

have diplomatic relations, they send ambassadors who live and work in<br />

embassies. Ambassador is the person and embassy is the building. In<br />

the case of the Holy See, its title for ambassador is "apostolic nuncio".<br />

"Apostolic" because the person represents the Pope, who is the successor<br />

of the Apostle Peter. "Nuncio" comes from the same Latin word as the<br />

verb “to announce” or “to speak”. The Pope's diplomatic representative is<br />

someone who speaks on behalf of the Pope. I would also say that the Pope's<br />

diplomatic representative is someone who listens on behalf of the Pope. An<br />

apostolic nuncio lives in an Apostolic Nunciature. Nuncio is the person and<br />

Nunciature is the building. My title, however, is Chargé d'Affaires, which is<br />

a more humble ranking than Nuncio, although the responsibility is the same<br />

and the work is the same.<br />

2. His Holiness the Pope’s Message for the Celebration of the 43rd<br />

World Day of Peace <strong>20</strong>10 entitled “If You Want to Cultivate Peace,<br />

Protect Creation. What is the message the Pope hopes to convey<br />

Peace is important. Everyone wants peace. No one wants war. Now<br />

for many years, since the time of Pope Paul VI, the Catholic Church has<br />

celebrated the World Day of Peace on January 1st. Every year, the pope<br />

issues an important message on a theme related to peace, showing how<br />

peace is the fruit of other things. One of the most famous quotations from<br />

Pope Paul VI on this theme is: “If you want peace, work for justice.” In<br />

other words, peace is the fruit of justice. When there is justice, there is<br />

peace. This year, Pope Benedict XVI wants to highlight the fact that there<br />

is a strong bond between peace and protection of the environment. If you<br />

want peace, protect the environment. When the earth’s resources are used<br />

incorrectly, there is environmental degradation, people suffer, and then<br />

enter into conflict. We see this very clearly in the world. Climate change,<br />

desertification, reduced productivity of agricultural land, pollution of<br />

rivers and underwater sources, loss of biodiversity, deforestation and other<br />

environmental crises bring about economic crises, food crises, water crises,<br />

social crises and sow the seeds of conflict and violence. Protecting the<br />

environment and building peace go hand-in-hand.<br />

3. Hundreds of charity workers in Catholic organizations from all<br />

over Asia gathered in Taiwan last year for the Pontifical Council “Cor<br />

Unum” - or “One Heart”. Is that a regular spiritual exercises program<br />

Spiritual Exercises were organized for the church's charitable workers by the<br />

Pontifical Council Cor Unum from September 7-11, <strong>20</strong>09 at Fu Jen Catholic<br />

University in Taipei. It was a program of prayer and reflection for people<br />

serving the poor, the neglected, the needy, and victims of natural disasters.<br />

There were 452 participants, including 250 priests, 48 Archbishops and<br />

Bishops, and five Cardinals: Cardinal Paul Cordes, Cardinal Paul Shan<br />

of Kaohsiung (Taiwan), Cardinal Joseph Zen of Hong Kong, Cardinal<br />

Gaudencio Rosales of Manila (Philippines) and Cardinal Thelesphore<br />

Toppo of Ranchi (India). Participants came from 250 Dioceses in 29<br />

countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia,<br />

Iran, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal,<br />

Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Syria, Taiwan, Tajikistan,<br />

Thailand, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and the Vatican City.<br />

There were also representatives of United States Catholic Relief Services.<br />

The largest number of participants came from India and the Philippines,<br />

respectively with 126 and 92 participants. The Pontifical Council Cor Unum<br />

has been arranging such programs in different continents to give spiritual<br />

help to the church's charity workers so that they can continue to give<br />

spiritual and material help to others. We have to grow in union with God,<br />

who is the source of our energy and strength. When a person knows the<br />

love of God, that person can share love with others. The program for North<br />

and South America was held in Mexico. Last September, the program for all<br />

of Asia was held here in Taipei. The program could have been anywhere in<br />

Asia, but we chose to have it in Taipei. It was really an extraordinary, oncein-a-lifetime<br />

event.<br />

4. Msgr. Ambrose Madtha, former Vatican chargé d'affaires in<br />

Taiwan, said The Church's "coming of age" in Taiwan can also be seen<br />

in the reduced number of foreign missionaries present Taiwan. Has<br />

there been more Taiwanese missionaries<br />

I would agree with my predecessor that the Church in Taiwan has "come of<br />

age". It has come of age in so far as it is not dependent on outside financing<br />

to run itself and its charitable works. The Church in Taiwan is selfsupporting.<br />

It has "come of age" in the sense that the Catholic Church in Taiwan<br />

has an impressive number of institutions which give excellent service to<br />

everyone, without discrimination. I brought a copy of the most recent<br />

Taiwan Catholic Church Directory for <strong>20</strong>10. As of December 31, <strong>20</strong>09,<br />

there are 299,938 Catholics in Taiwan, 15 bishops, 682 priests, 93 religious<br />

brothers, 1146 Sisters, 65 seminarians, 321 catechists, 378 parishes, three<br />

Catholic universities, 29 secondary schools, 11 elementary schools, and 167<br />

kindergartens. The church administers 10 hospitals, 7 clinics, 15 orphanages,<br />

<strong>20</strong> nursing homes, and 19 centers for handicapped children. This is really<br />

an impressive number of high quality institutions of which the Church in<br />

Taiwan can be justly proud. I am proud of the Church in Taiwan.<br />

As for the number of foreign missionaries, my office is keeping a careful<br />

watch on the numbers of priests. I made a review of the statistics for the<br />

past 10 years. In <strong>20</strong>00, there were 339 Chinese priests and 325 foreign<br />

priests. In <strong>20</strong>04, there were 360 Chinese priests and 366 foreign priests. In<br />

<strong>20</strong>07 there were 326 Chinese priests and 356 foreign priests. In <strong>20</strong>09, there<br />

was one more in each category: 327 Chinese priests and 357 foreign priests.<br />

From <strong>20</strong>00 to <strong>20</strong>07, the number of Chinese priests and foreign priests in<br />

Taiwan is just about equal. From <strong>20</strong>07 until now, there are 30 more foreign<br />

priests than Chinese priests. These statistics indicate that the number of<br />

priests in Taiwan is fairly stable, and the ratio of Chinese priests to foreign<br />

priests is also stable. But everyone is getting older. I think that the Catholic<br />

Church in Taiwan is going to need foreign missionaries for many years to<br />

come, because there are not many young men from Taiwan who are entering<br />

seminary, and Taiwan has one of the lowest, if not the lowest, birthrate in<br />

the world. If parents have only one child, especially a son, they want that<br />

child to marry and carry on the family line. This is important in the Chinese<br />

culture, but also in many cultures around the world. When parents have<br />

fewer children, there are fewer people becoming priests and Sisters. That<br />

being said, however, I want to point out one significant fact: in the history<br />

of the Church in Taiwan there were many missionary bishops; now all the<br />

active Catholic bishops of Taiwan were born in Taiwan. They are bishops<br />

"made in Taiwan." This is another sign of the church's maturity.<br />

Recently, Cardinal Shan said that he hoped that the Catholic Church in<br />

Taiwan would have enough vocations to be able to send priests to other parts<br />

of the world. There are already some priests from Taiwan working in other<br />

parts of the world – maybe about 8 priests – who are serving the overseas<br />

Chinese community in Canada, the United States, Malaysia, the Philippines,<br />

Australia, and Europe. I join with the Cardinal in praying that there will be<br />

more in the future.<br />

5. The Catholic Church has been in Taiwan for 150 years now. How<br />

much has Catholicism changed in Taiwan<br />

Actually, the Catholic Church has been in Taiwan for almost 400 years. The<br />

first priests came in 1626. They came from the Philippines, accompanying a<br />

small group of Spanish soldiers, and arrived in the north of the island. They<br />

remained until 1642 when they were expelled by the Dutch. These first<br />

priests received a very good welcome and many people, about 3000-4000<br />

out of a total population of 60,000 to 70,000, were baptized.<br />

When the Dutch forced the Spanish soldiers to leave, they let these priests<br />

stay for a while, then they forced them to leave too. Priests did not return to<br />

Taiwan until 1859, arriving in Kaohsiung. That is the 150th anniversary we<br />

have been celebrating.<br />

Now to answer your question: in the Bible, in Hebrews 13:8, we read: "Jesus<br />

Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever!" What makes the Catholic<br />

Church "Catholic" never changes, it is always the same. Over the past 150<br />

years, the essence of the Catholic Church – what makes the Catholic Church<br />

"Catholic" – has not changed.<br />

That being said, social conditions in Taiwan in 1859 were much different<br />

from today. The circumstances of the church have changed. In 1859,<br />

Taiwan was a wild and often dangerous place. There were only a handful<br />

of Catholics, and the foreign Catholic missionaries – both priests and<br />

laypeople, especially families – were dependent on the people with whom<br />

they came into contact. Now the Catholics are not foreign, but local; they<br />

are a lot more numerous, they enjoy peace and prosperity, and religious<br />

freedom.<br />

6. What kinds of exchanges have been going on between Taiwan and<br />

the Holy See apart from religious and diplomatic relations<br />

Diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the Republic of China –<br />

Taiwan are stable. There have been many significant events during the<br />

course of the past year. First, I would like to mention Typhoon Morakot<br />

and the flooding which came with it. The Pope was the first Head of<br />

State to send a donation to help the victims. Second was the Cor Unum<br />

Spiritual Exercises, which we already talked about. Third, the Republic of<br />

China decided to allow Holy See and Vatican City State passport holders<br />

to come to Taiwan without a visa. Of course, no visa is required to enter<br />

the Vatican City, so now the treatment is reciprocal. Fourth was the 150th<br />

anniversary, which we already mentioned. Recently, the ministry of<br />

education announced that it would recognize the academic degrees granted<br />

by pontifical universities in Rome. I was really overjoyed when I heard this<br />

news, because in Taiwan there are about 850 priests, Sisters and laypeople<br />

who have degrees from pontifical universities. Until now, those degrees<br />

have not been recognized by the government. This is good news for them.<br />

This is also good news for students from Taiwan who want to study at one<br />

of the pontifical universities in Rome, and it is good news for students from<br />

one of the pontifical universities in Rome who want to study in Taiwan.<br />

7. Can you tell me more about these educational exchanges<br />

Last summer, about <strong>20</strong> students from Taiwan went to Rome for a twoweek<br />

program at the pontifical Gregorian University. In the last year,<br />

three pontifical universities in Rome signed cooperation agreements with<br />

three different universities in Taiwan. This opens the way for academic<br />

cooperation and educational exchanges of professors and students. It<br />

is something at the beginning. I hope it is something that will grow.<br />

When students travel and study in a different cultural context, in a<br />

different language, they bring something and they take something away.<br />

Student exchanges bring greater understanding among peoples. Greater<br />

understanding promotes peace and harmonious relationships among nations.<br />

It is something very positive.<br />

8. What do you hope to achieve during your tenure in Taiwan<br />

The primary role of the pope’s representative in a country is to support<br />

and strengthen the bonds between the pope and the local Church. This<br />

connection between the pope and the church in a country is something<br />

essential to the Church. Without it, we can’t talk about a Catholic Church.<br />

In addition, the Church in Taiwan has its contribution to make to the worldwide<br />

Church. In particular, there are several ways that the Church in<br />

Taiwan can help the Church in China. The Church in China needs healing<br />

and reconciliation. Moreover, the training of its religious personnel is a<br />

very serious concern of the Holy See. There are several things the Church<br />

in Taiwan can do to help, and in helping the Church in China, the Church in<br />

Taiwan also helps itself. There is the Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi: “it is<br />

in giving that we receive.” It is a win-win situation.<br />

I already mentioned the news reports concerning the Republic of China’s<br />

intention to recognize the academic degrees granted by the pontifical<br />

universities in Rome. I hope this can happen very soon. There are<br />

other pontifical universities in other places in the world. I hope that the<br />

government will also recognize the degrees from these universities.<br />

I would also like to note that the Council for Labor Affairs is looking into<br />

the treatment of foreign workers, especially family caregivers. Here I<br />

have to say that there are many foreign caregivers whose employers do not<br />

give them a day off every week. This is an unjust situation. I hope that<br />

foreign caregivers, many of whom are Catholic, can receive more equitable<br />

treatment. The Holy See has a long tradition of supporting workers’ rights.<br />

There are many ways in which the Holy See and the Republic of China can<br />

cooperate in the humanitarian, cultural and educational areas.<br />

For example, the Republic of China - Taiwan is an excellent partner of the<br />

Holy See in providing humanitarian assistance around the world. Whenever<br />

there is a natural disaster and the pope makes an appeal, the Republic of<br />

China responds. No other country does this. I hope that the Republic of<br />

China will continue this type of assistance in the future as it has done in the<br />

past.<br />

On a personal note, in every country where I have served, I have grown to<br />

love the people, the culture, and the local Catholic Church. I have been<br />

in Taiwan for two years and already I love the people of Taiwan and the<br />

Catholic Church in Taiwan. I hope that I will grow to love Taiwan and its<br />

people more and more. I'm trying to learn the language. One of the first<br />

things I learned to say in Chinese is: Tien Zhu shi ai – "God is love." God's<br />

love and the compassion we show to one another are the center of life.<br />

9. You served as a counselor at the apostolic nunciature in Nigeria. And<br />

now charge d’affaires in Taipei. What did you expect before coming to<br />

Taiwan<br />

Having served in many countries, Ethiopia, Turkey, Switzerland and<br />

Nigeria before coming to Taiwan, I have learned not to form ideas and<br />

preconceptions. Every country is different from the image people have of it<br />

around the world. I would only say that Taiwan is a very dynamic country;<br />

things here are very busy; Taiwan has a great contribution to make to the<br />

world. And while the Catholic Church in Taiwan is very small, it is also<br />

active, and it has its contribution to make.<br />

10. You were born in the USA. Were you born a Catholic<br />

I was born in the U.S., but have lived in 12 different countries and have<br />

visited 39 different countries in addition to those. I’ve taken a little piece of<br />

every country where I have lived. I was born a Catholic. Both my parents<br />

and all my grandparents are Catholic. There are several priests in my<br />

family. My cousin is a priest. My mother’s father’s younger brother was<br />

a priest. My father’s mother’s cousin was a priest. He was from Poland<br />

and was killed in Germany in the concentration camps in World War II.<br />

Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1999, so he is one step away from being<br />

proclaimed a Saint. In the midst of the camps, in the midst of suffering and<br />

in the face of evil, he never lost his humanity, but continued to try to help<br />

other people. The prisoners in the camps had almost nothing to eat, and my<br />

cousin gave away his bread. He was unselfish. He was faithful to God, to<br />

himself and to other people. For me, he is a real inspiration. When people<br />

try to hurt us, even though it is difficult, we need to learn to respond without<br />

hate or anger, but in a positive way.<br />
