Cercyonis sthenele, Morgan, MORGAN County, 18 July 1963, TJB, one fresh male with a slight suggestion of a red flush around the largest dorsal forewing spot (BYU, det RES 1994); Ogden Canyon, WEBER County, 14 August 1933, A.D. Boyle, one fresh male with NO red flush (BYU, det RES 1994); a few of such specimens approach Cercyonis meadii in facies, but are better referable to Cercyonis sthenele [JAS considers the two species conspecific anyway, and I think I agree, so no big deal, amigos]. Tanner (BYU, det RES 1994); this is another enigma, since Dr. Tanner is considered reliable, but inadvertent mislabeling is considered likely, since the species is unknown from Utah except in the La Sal Mountains. See the Wyoming record above, and realize that Erebia epipsodea could well occur on the north slope of the Uinta Mountains in Utah, but all records so far from the Wasatch Range are dubious. We had a 9 0 percent winter snowpack and typical spring, but there was nearly zero precipitation after Memorial weekend, so the rest of the season was hot, dry, advanced and generally poor. Statewide forest fires, with several deaths, were in the national news; several lakes wentdry; and portionsof the National Forests were closed after 15 July becauseof the firesand fire danger. Many thanks to all! BUTTERFLIES Summary: That moth list isa tough act to follow, but despite the summer and fall drought, we had one of the best field years ever! Many days were collectible from 7in the morning to 7 at night, totally sunny. Nearly450 recordsare available, for over 200 species; of these, 236 are county records for 129 species in 50 counties [53 in 1993,57 both years combined]. Our State now has 113.11 average Species per county, or 92.39 percent of projection, which is slightly ahead of Utah forthe first time in several years. However, we havea long way togo toequal the 96-97 percent levels of Arizona, California and Nevada,and both New Mexicoand Oregon are over 90 percent. This is all good news; Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming,and the Plains States need a lot of help, so lets work there too! Two state records were found: Polites pvretta] carus by RE5 and 5andia macfarlandi by PAOetal. Several moreare possible,Yogi, so it ain't over yet.
