County, 13 June 1979, CAM (BW,
genit/micro det RES 1994); the
material I have seen from UTAH
undescribed subspecies-RES.
1994); Wasatch Mountain State
Park, WASATCH County, 15
August 1982, CAM (BW, det RES
1994). Coenonympha tullia
ochracea, montane material from
Box Elder, Iron, Juab, Millard and
Tooele counties is referable to this
subspecies (CAM, JMJ, RES, BYU,
all det RES 1994); now all Utah
counties. Coenonympha haydeni,
Provo Canyon, UTAH County, 24
July 1962, TJB (BYU, det RES
1994); this is not a believable
record, based on all available
information, nor are any of several
other records from previous
decades, so this species remains
unknown AND UNLIKELY from
Utah. Cercyonis pegala, Mona,
5,000 ft, JUAB County, ssp
utahensis Austin, det G.T. Austin
(Bulletin of the Allyn Museum No.
135, 1992). Cercyonis sthenele,
Morgan, MORGAN County, 18 July
1963, TJB, one fresh male with a
slight suggestion of a red flush
around the largest dorsal forewing
spot (BYU, det RES 1994); Ogden
Canyon, WEBER County, 14
August 1933, A.D. Boyle, one fresh
male with NO red flush (BYU, det
RES 1994); a few of such
specimens approach Cercyonis
meadii in facies, but are better
referable to Cercyonis sthenele
[JAS considers the two species
conspecific anyway, and I think I
agree, so no big deal, amigos].
Erebia epipsodea, Provo Canyon,
UTAH County, 12 July 1973, V.M.
Tanner (BYU, det RES 1994); this
is another enigma, since Dr.
Tanner is considered reliable, but
inadvertent mislabeling is
considered likely, since the species
is unknown from Utah except in
the La Sal Mountains. See the
Wyoming record above, and realize
that Erebia epipsodea could well
occur on the north slope of the
Uinta Mountains in Utah, but all
records so far from the Wasatch
Range are dubious. Neominois
ridingsii, Seely Creek, SANPETE
County, 12 July 1979 (KBT).
Oeneis jutta, McKee Draw,
DAGGETT County, NORTHEAST,
Summary: Total of 19 contributors is about
average, butfewerthan in 1993. We had a 9 0
percent winter snowpack and typical spring, but
there was nearly zero precipitation after
Memorial weekend, so the rest of the season
was hot, dry, advanced and generally poor.
Statewide forest fires, with several deaths,
were in the national news; several lakes wentdry;
and portionsof the National Forests were
closed after 15 July becauseof the firesand fire
danger. Nearly all butterflies were gone by12
July on Loveland Pass, and most of thealpine
wetlands looked like they usually do about Labor
Day. As of 21 January1995 there still has been
almost no rain or snow, so this could be a
disastrous drought year.
