24-29 May (KP), Pterourus
glaucus, Pieris napi, Anthocharis
sara, Celastrina argiolus,
Plebejus saepiolus, Polygonia
faunus, Polygonia satyrus.
Anthocharis Sara was present in
reasonable numbers from mile 4 to
mile 16, feeding on dandelions at
the base of the cliffs along the east
side of the highway. The highest
concentration of A. Sara was found
at mile 8.5. A Haines resident said
that A. sara had been flying for
about two weeks before I arrived,
while the one specimen caught in
Skagway appeared very fresh.
Judging by the flowers, the season
in Haines was a couple of weeks
more advanced than Skagway.
Note: The Haines Highway from mile 9.2to mile
30.9 lies within the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle
Preserve, and a collecting permit is required
ALASKA
Barren Islands (Ushagat and
East Amatuli Islands), 4, 24 June,
4 July, Pieris napi. No other
species of butterfly was seen --
which often is the case on such
remote Alaskan islands.
Erebia occulta is now known to be
conditions, 1994 sawa return to good weather
MIGRANTS AND STRAYS
The common migrant species,
Vanessa cardui, Danaus
plexippus, and Hyles lineata, were
not reported at all. By contrast,
two rarer migrants were seen in
new or unusual areas andlor
conditions. Vanessa virginiensis
was collected in only the third
county east of the Cascades, in
Washington, at Sullivan Creek
Road, 10 miles northeast of the
campground, 5 September, PEND
OREILLE (DN). This record is put
in perspective by the fact that the
much better collected adjacent
part of British Columbia has
recorded only two specimens of
this species by 100 years of keen
resident collecting. V. atalanta, a
single fresh specimen was seen in
British Columbia at Sproule Creek,
near Nelson, 19 April, Central
Kootenay (JHS). This represents
the first evidence that V. atalanta
Since noneof theseare forthe current
Season Summary year they are not
reported here, but Ray will certainly provide
a copy of these recordstoany interested
