The Programme “” assessing the trends and adapting to change 14
Summit Day One: The Programme 21 April Global perspectives – changing priorities Increasingly in today’s world, influences from economic, political, environmental and social changes now routinely interact at an international level, and determine the context in which everyone has to operate. This session aims to: • Assess the principal trends in the world in 2008 and beyond which can constrain the industry’s potential for growth, sustainability and responsibility; • Examine possible responses from Travel & Tourism - notably to: - the opportunities of economic growth, international trade, new tourism markets, greater leisure, wider education, longer lifespans, inter-culturalism, and technologies in travel and communications; - the pressures from climate change, population growth, wider inequalities, cultural tensions, political instability, financial market volatility, increased competition for land, water, food and energy; - the changes in context resulting from the rise of China, Russia, the Middle East and India, from the speed of scientific advance and the pervasiveness of information technology, and from milestones such as the phase-out of leaded petrol worldwide in December 2008, or from the increasingly dominant role of the news and entertainment media. 10.30 – 10.35 Special Welcoming Remarks 10.35 – 10.50 Scene Setter 10.50 – 12.00 Panel Discussion Moderator: HE Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority Professor Norbert Walter, Chief Economist, Deutsche Bank Group and CEO, Deutsche Bank Research Nik Gowing, Main Presenter, BBC World Panel Contributors: HE Mubarak Al Muhairi, Director General, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority Christopher Dickey, Paris Bureau Chief and Middle East Regional Editor, Newsweek Arthur de Haast, Global CEO, Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels Jabu Mabuza, Chairman, South Africa Tourism, Group Chief Executive, Tsogo Sun Holdings Ltd and Southern Sun Hotels Edouard Ettedgui, Group Chief Executive, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group 12.00 Special InaugurATION HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and the Ruler of Dubai 15
