Welcome address by his Excellency, the President of the Republic of Portugal, Aníbal Cavaco Silva
“It is a privilege for Portugal to play host once again to the Global Travel & Tourism Summit,
on this occasion in Lisbon, and I am most pleased to be involved in such a valuable initiative.
In addition to the growing significance of Travel and Tourism as a key source of economic
activity, the industry also presents a rather unique network of interdependencies across a broad
social spectrum, including culture, the environment, security, natural and human resources,
urban planning, heritage, transportation, infrastructure and the business climate. Thus, the sector
involves multiple stakeholders - in a frequently delicate balance of interests and perspectives - and is progressively
acquiring a global dimension.
Given the high profile of professionals attending this Summit, both at the business and institutional level, and the
extremely opportune and incisive nature of the issues to be debated under the theme Breaking Barriers, Managing
Growth, this Summit is sure to engender insightful and profitable discussion on the worldwide role and future
of the Travel and Tourism industry. I am convinced that this event will provide a stimulating contribution to a
global strategy for co-operation and plural development of the tourism business.
I would therefore like to express my greetings and a warm welcome to all participants in this important forum –
the 7th Global Travel & Tourism Summit – and wish you every success in your works over the next few days.”
The Honourable José Sócrates, Prime Minister of Portugal
“Over the years Portugal has become one of the main world tourist destinations. Its rich
natural heritage, valuable historical sites and monuments, and the warmth and hospitality of
its people, have created altogether a high quality offer that accounts for millions of tourists
every year. This success, which we want to develop and build on, can also be explained by
a unique gastronomy, exquisite and traditional wines, and an increasing investment both in
environmental and urban quality and in security, an essential element of leisure and tourism
today. We are fully aware of the important role played by hospitality in what we have achieved
so far and in what we want yet to become. That is why we invest in the continuing improvement of human
resources and quality of service.
But see for yourself: Welcome to Portugal!”
W e l c o m e
Jean-Claude Baumgarten, President, World Travel & Tourism Council
“Our world has always progressed in cycles. The global economy is currently enjoying one of
the most significant levels of growth for the past fifty years. Within this, an increasing number
of national economies are driving forward, generating wealth, buying power and employment.
Developing nations have an unparalleled chance to benefit from this climate.
This development creates both opportunities and challenges which the Travel & Tourism
industry must recognise and address. The Round, the Summit’s unique format will provide an
active forum for discussion, aiming to reach solutions which will reconcile prosperity and social, cultural and
environmental responsibility.”
Geoffrey J W Kent, Chairman, World Travel & Tourism Council, Chairman & CEO, Abercrombie & Kent
“Four years ago major industry leaders and public sector decision makers met at the WTTC
Summit in Vilamoura, Portugal and gave the world a message of confidence in our future.
Very few of us could have predicted during that difficult period, that four years later we would
return to Portugal with a growth agenda of this magnitude.
This year’s Summit will be another turning point. We will not only continue to raise awareness
of the importance of our industry, but will also play an active role in the global issues that the
planet is facing. A human activity where people serve people has to be present in this debate.”
Igniting Markets of Growth
In recent years, CEOs have been judged by their success in rationalisation, streamlining and cutting unnecessary
costs. Now, such conventional approaches to leadership face a new challenge – unprecedented growth. Today,
CEOs must find ways to project their ‘lean teams’ and compact companies into a future of rising global
demand, faster change, and new questions. How do CEOs respond to the opportunities Is there new scope
not only for new profits, but also for new priorities and responsibilities, balancing business needs with cultural,
social and environmental factors What visions and strategies drive the leaders of dynamic companies and
industries And what can we learn from them
The Growth Agenda
T h e Pro g r a m m e
Infrastructure in most of the world’s major Travel & Tourism economies is facing serious capacity
challenges and functional constraints. It is simply incapable of coping with accelerating global demand.
The development of airports or roads is also often delayed by misguided priorities, red-tape, or influential
interest groups. Even though the growth clock is ticking, some governments are still indecisive when it
comes to providing the hardware (infrastructure) or the software (regulatory framework) to promote social
progress and economic prosperity.
How are governments responding to the opportunities presented by Travel & Tourism growth Do nations
establish long-term goals, and are they the right ones How are they addressing barriers to growth, balancing
security and passenger flow, investment and infrastructure, as well as human capital Do communications,
diplomacy and partnership feature on their agendas
Our industry generates employment, creates economic prosperity and can even help cement international
Is it really possible for the industry to bring useful change to people’s lives, to their communities, and to
The risk of an energy crisis is forcing a re-think on consumption levels, efficiency, and alternatives. Know-how is
The building was commenced under the reign of Queen D Isabel, wife of King
D Afonso V, prior to her death in 1455. It was completed more than a century
later by Canon António da Conceição. He carried out the project with the sum
amateurs a pleasant game, whilst also presenting a challenge for professionals. It was
voted amongst the top 10 courses in Portugal in the biennial poll organised by the
European Golf magazine. With its many trees and wild flowers, the course provides
a varied start, for the first three holes consist of a par 5, a 386-metre par 4 and a
186-metre par 3. Amongst the first nine holes, attention is drawn to the short
eighth hole, with a lake in front of its green.
The next nine holes are even more difficult. Number 12 is a par 4 which, although
not very long, has a lake running beside the fairway and down to the green. Then
comes what is probably the most difficult test on the course: hole 16, a 200-metre
par 3, where one needs to play over a lake to reach the green.
The course’s recognised quality has led to its hosting several events from the
European Challenge Tour.
the marks established in the strategic plan.
After just one year in office, Landrieu increased the state’s advertising budget by
almost 20% by implementing cost-savings and streamlining operations.
