The Leaders of Industry Arthur de Haast is an International Director of Jones Lang LaSalle (NYSE: JLL), the world’s leading real estate services and money management firm. He is the Global CEO of Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels, the specialist division of the company that provides wide ranging advice to major hotel companies and hotel investors globally. Manuel Fernando Espírito Santo Chairman, Espirto Santo Tourism Born in Lisbon in July 1958, Manuel Fernando Espirito Santo graduated in economics. In 1983, he joined Morgan Grenfell & Co, in London as assistant manager. In 1989, he became Director of Espirito Santo Investment Management in London, an asset management company specialized in investing in Southern European Countries. In 1992, he was appointed General Manager of Banco Espirito Santo, London Branch. In 1996, he moved to Portugal and became member of Espirito Santo Group Executive Committee, with the responsibility for all non-financial activities of the Group. Through Espirito Santo Resources, the group is involved in tourism, real estate, construction, mining, agriculture and health sectors. Espirito Santo Tourism holds all the tourism related activities of the Group, which includes the Tivoli chain of hotels in Portugal, ES Viagens, the largest travel agency and tour operator also in Portugal and 5 golf courses. Recently the Group acquired Praia do Forte Eco Resort, a 300 bedroom resort in the State of Bahia, in Brazil. Today, Manuel Fernando Espirito Santo is a Board Member of Espirito Santo International Holding, Espirito Santo Financial Group, Banco Espirito Santo and Chairman of Espirito Santo Resources and Espirito Santo Tourism. The Leaders of Industry Maurice Flanagan CBE Executive Vice Chairman Emirates Airline & Group Maurice Flanagan joined BOAC (predecessor of British Airways) in 1953 as a trainee after commissioned service in the Royal Air Force as a navigator. He worked in a variety of posts world-wide, and returned to the UK in 1965 as a Route Planning Manager. He became a member of British Airways’ senior management in 1974. In 1978, Mr Flanagan left British Airways to become Managing Director of Dnata, and of Emirates when the airline was launched in 1985. He was made CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2000 in recognition of his contribution to community relations in the UAE and for services to aviation. Financially independent and thriving, Emirates is not subsidised in any way by its owners, other than initial assistance with start up costs. Today the Group, which has over 30,000 staff, comprises an award-winning airline operating 103 wide-bodied aircraft to 87 international destinations, an international cargo division, a full-fledged destination management and leisure division, an international ground-handler and an airline IT developer. T h e Leaders of Industry John Francis Planetwalker Planetwalk After witnessing a massive oil spill in San Francisco Bay in 1971, John Francis stopped using motorized vehicles. He gave voice to his protest by taking a vow of silence, which lasted 17-years. In 1983, he set off on an 18-year pilgrimage, walking across North and South America, to raise environmental awareness and promote earth stewardship. While silent, he taught courses, and, obtained undergraduate and graduate degrees in environmental studies. Francis regained his voice on Earth Day 1990, and now shares what he had learned in his years of silence. He wrote oil pollution regulations for the US Coast Guard, and was appointed Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations Environmental Program. Francis, founded and directs Planetwalk, an educational organization dedicated to encouraging peace among people by making peace with nature. In 2005, he published his book Planetwalker: How to Change Your World One Step at a Time. Ed Fuller President and Managing Director, International Lodging, Marriott International, Inc Edwin D “Ed” Fuller is president and managing director of international lodging for Marriott International, Inc. Based at the company’s headquarters in Washington, DC, he has overall operating responsibility for managed and franchised hotels spanning seven lodging brands and brand extensions outside the continental United States and Canada. This region includes Hawaii and 67 countries in Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East. Under his leadership Marriott brands have grown to be the second largest in the Asia-Pacific region, second largest in South America and first in Europe and Africa.
