2011 - 2012 SCHOOL YEAR JANUARY ISSUE
MAIN STREET
Principal’s Message
As I said, time does pass quickly. Once again,
welcome back; here are a few things that I’d like
you to know about:
Registration/Enrollment
Welcome to 2012! It never ceases to amaze me
how quickly time passes by! Remember this
though, ten years from now, today will be one of
“the good old days,” so make sure you try to enjoy
it. I hope that you and your family had time to relax
and recharge your batteries during the winter
break. I know that I came back to school energized,
and eager to see all our students and staff! We are
well under way now, and everybody is back into
the routine. Shortly, one of the rites of passage for
our fifth graders will begin: science camp! I have
been talking to many of our students about this,
and they are all excited to go and learn in the great
outdoors! This year I will experience this from a
parent’s perspective, as my 5 th grade daughter at
Soquel Elementary will be going at the same time
as our Main Street students. As well as learning
about science, this will be an opportunity for
students from both schools to get to know each
other. This will be helpful, because this time next
year many of these students will be in the same
classes at New Brighton Middle School!
There has been a change to the age requirement for
kindergarten students beginning school in August
2012. In order to be admitted for Kindergarten
in August 2012, students must be five years of
age on or before November 1, 2012.
If your child turns five between November 2
and December 2, 2012 your child may be
enrolled in a program called Transitional
Kindergarten (TK).
If you are interested in your child attending TK, you
should call Janet Lindenbaum (464 5639) at the
District Office, and ask to be placed on the interest
list for the TK program. You need to wait until
2/14/12 to call Ms. Lindenbaum.
The creation of a TK program will be decided when
there is clarification regarding the Governor
Brown’s budget proposal. There is a possibility
that the TK program may be suspended due to the
financial crisis at our state level. Continue on page 3
Principal’s Message
Attendance
Thank you to all the families that are getting your students to class on time each day, and attending school
regularly. As well as helping your student’s achievement by having him/her here each day for instruction, it
greatly helps the financial well being of the district! If you need to be out of school for five days or more, make
arrangements with the school office, and your child’s teacher, for an independent study contract. When a student
has an independent study contract, the district is able to receive attendance revenue for the days covered by the
independent study. A goal for the district is to improve overall student attendance, and every day a student is
present contributes to that goal. With regard to this, it is also helpful if families use student vacation time to go on
vacation. Thank you, again, for your continued attention to this matter.
Computer Lab
The computer lab will be undergoing some changes in the coming weeks, expanding from the present 20-‐
workstation setup to 32 workstations. Our superintendent, Henry Castaniada was successful in writing a grant,
and the Santa Cruz County Office of Education is providing the funds. We are excited about increasing the capacity
of the computer lab, and are looking at ways of increasing the hours that the lab is available for students. We are
already using it for after school reading intervention, and we’ll be looking at ways of opening it before school as
well.
Reading Intervention
Former Main Street teacher Linda Pearson has begun a reading intervention program here at school. Data from
reading assessments was used to identify which students would benefit from intervention, and K-‐2 students are
receiving these services during the school day, while students in 3-‐5 th grade are attending intervention after
school. If your child was identified for intervention you will have received a permission slip that needs to be
returned to the office.
Thank you for your support,
Craig Broadhurst
