101 Heathy dry forest Valley forest The community is restricted to the lower slopes and valleys in the foothills to the north and east of Melbourne. Kinglake National Park and the Reference Areas in Yan Yean Water Catchment include representative examples. Weeds are the major threat to valley forest, which has been drastically reduced in extent by agricultural and urban development. Heathy dry forest Of the three variants of heathy dry forest described earlier, only the Kinglake type is well represented in flora conservation reserves (Kinglake National Park). Both the upper Goulbum and upper Thomson variants are poorly reserved, although the lowland extension of Baw Baw National Park contains some stands of the latter. Valuable examples of the upper Goulburn variant include one at Moonlight Spur, and another near die junction of Slander Creek with the upper Goulburn River, east of Woods Point. Additional valuable stands in the Thomson Valley are found around Swingler and Mormon Town, near Walhalla. Highquality examples of this community also occur in the Upper Yarra Catchment. Frequent burning may also be detrimental to heathy dry forest. Dry sclerophyll forest This community is widespread from Kinglake to Jamieson. It is well represented in conservation reserves, including Kinglake National Park, Cathedral Range State Park, Eildon State Park, and Fraser National Park. An unreserved variant of dry sclerophyll forest grows soudi of die Thomson River and west of Toongabbie. The community often contains many environmental weeds, which appear to be the major threat to it. Box woodland Apart from stands on the lower slopes and alluvial plains of the Goulburn River valley.
102 small, disturbed examples of box woodland occur in the McKenzie Flora Reserve near Alexandra. This community has been substantially depleted, and is poorly reserved in the study area. Plains grassy woodland This woodland occurs on the basalt plains to the north of Melbourne, and on alluvial plains along the Goulburn and Yarra Rivers and their tributaries. It is rarely found on sedimentary geologies. Il is poorly represented on public land, occurring at Yan Yean (in a disturbed form) and in the Epping and Yan Yean Cemeteries. Weed invasion and grazing pose the greatest threat. Plains grassland With the exception of a small example in the Epping Cemetery, plains grassland does not occur on public land in the study area. An action plan for the management of this much-depleted community has been prepared by the Department of Conservation and Environment, and is being implemented. The remaining examples are commonly disturbed by grazing and weed invasion. Floodplain riparian woodland Woodland of this type is restricted to river banks and billabongs in the valleys of the Yarra, Goulburn, Yea, and the Acheron Rivers, and Hughes, King Parrot, and Dabyminga Creeks. Most of these stands are surrounded by agricultural land. Generally, they fall within river reserves, which, despite being public land, are often grazed or used as watering points by slock. Many are partially or completely cleared. The majority are in poor condition. Weed invasion and erosion of banks are the major threats. Grassy wetland Although not known to occur on public land in the study area, grassy wefland is believed lo occur on government-owned railway reserves in the Wallan area. Grazing and associated weed invasion pose the major threats lo il. Floodplain wetland complex Examples of this complex are found on alluvial plains in the Yarra and Goulbum Valleys, but many are disturbed by weeds and grazing. The best examples are scattered in the river reserves along the Goulburn River between Eildon and Seymour, although valuable examples also occur along die Yarra and Little Yarta Rivers near Yarra Junction and Yarra Glen. Heathy woodland A band of heathy woodland straddles the lower foothills to the south of the Great Dividing Range, from the Cardinia- Gembrook area eastwards to north of Moe. Representative examples are reserved within Bunyip State Park and Moondarta State Park. Fire regimes play an important role in determining the species composition and abundance in this community. Flora conservation, both inside and outside biological reserves, would be assisted by maintaining a full range of fire regimes (including unburnt areas), and monitoring any floristic changes, in order to increase our understanding of this interaction. Wet heathland This community is scattered throughout a range similar to that of heathy woodland, with which it usually occurs in conjunction. The wet heathland occupies wetter depressions and lower slopes. It is well reserved in Bunyip State Park and Moondarra State Park. The major threat to the community comes from changes to drainage, although it may also be prone to infection by cinnamon fungus. Swamp heathland Often associated with both wet heathland and swampy riparian forest, swamp heathland has a disjunct distribution. The most noteworthy stands occur along Woori Yallock and Cockatoo Creeks, in Bunyip State Park and Moondarra Stale Park. Sand heathland This community is found on French Island, Mornington Peninsula, and around Grantville
