CARGO HANDLING Step up to the next tier Last year, Hyster’s Nijmegen big trucks plant recorded its highest output since being established in 1953, with 1927 mast trucks and reach stackers of Cooper SH has supplied Poole Harbour Commissioners in England with two 10t Konecranes FLTs that have the same wheelbase as a traditional 8-tonner, thus increasing lift capacity, but not at the expense of turning radii. The machines have a 2800mm wheelbase - 200mm shorter than a conventional 10 tonner. Stability is not compromised as additional ballast is used to compensate for length. While a previous shortwheelbased version utilised the standard chassis for smaller machines, the new version, says Cooper SH, has a unique chassis length and also sits comfortably within the 8t-10t range. Chris Barnes, general manager, South for Cooper SH said: “The 8-tonne mark is generally a watershed where many suppliers complete their range, while others, such as SMV [Konecranes], start their range at 10 tonnes. Until now, it was believed that the two-tonne jump in capacity was also a determining factor in physical size. “Whilst this remains true in respect of height and wheel size, we can reduce the length yet retain capacity to 10 tonnes at 600mm load centre or even, if required, 12 tonnes at 600mm centre.” Konecranes last year supplied The two short wheelbase Konecranes 10-tonners at the Port of Poole The greening of oil filters US-based Filtration Technology Group (FTG) is supplying container terminals in Los Angeles and Long Beach with reusable oil filters for diesel engines fitted to container handling equipment. FTG’s “full-flow” filters are designed to last as long as or longer than a diesel engine, using a cleanable stainless steel wire cloth filter system that was initially developed, tested and manufactured by Parker Hannifin’s Racor Division. The technology is now independently manufactured by FTG. FTG originally found a market for replaceable filters in marine applications, where reusable filters eliminate all the logistics of getting new filters to vessels and then removing and correctly disposing of used filters. It is now targeting <strong>port</strong> applications and has had some success in LA/LB where a local service dealer, HD Industries (a division of Harbor Diesel between 6t and 54t manufactured - beating the previous record set in 2008 prior to the global economic financial crisis. Such is Hyster’s confidence, it is taking on Bespoke from Cooper SH 18 short-wheelbase machines to Sapa Aluminium in Sweden rated at 10t-1200mm LC, but compromises need to be made. Typically, continues Barnes, SMV machines of this size have a Volvo 6-cylinder, 7 litre engine developing 185 kW with a corresponding transmission. This is too long for a short wheelbase configuration, so it is replaced with a Volvo 561-VE, a 5 litre, 4-cylinder engine delivering 155 kW. Stage IIIb compliance is through a Volvo SCR system. Paul Gillingham, engineering manager of the Port of Poole, commented: “The short wheelbase machines have provided us with a new storage dimension that was not there previously. Other than the size, the machines share all the other characteristics of the rest of our fleet.” The two latest machines are part of a three-truck supply that brings the Konecranes FLT fleet at Poole to five, including 33t and 16t machines. ❏ ● The Linde-HTD plant in Wales will close in October. Konecranes in Sweden will take over production of container handlers for Kion Group, while other products (sideloaders, clamp trucks, etc) will be built under contract in the Czech Republic. FTG was able to manufacture reusable filters that matched all the specifications and passed all tests for use in mobile equipment, said Pat Vuoso, VP, parts and logistics at HD Industries. The filters are in use on equipment (including RTG gensets) at the ITS and Evergreen terminals. “My <strong>port</strong> contacts are quite happy with the result,” said Vuoso. “As word has gotten out that there’s a cost-effective alternative to disposable air filters, other <strong>port</strong> terminals are asking about cleanable, reusable filters, and the technology is spreading to other terminals.” Reusable filters do not affect oil replacement intervals and can be used for any liquid filtration application. New mid-range The company has introduced a new 8-16t range, which serves as something of a launch pad for various technologies, while also incorporating several applications already found in its larger trucks. Hyster has focused on overall cost of ownership, with particular regard to fuel consumption. The company claim savings of up to 17% can be achieved on the 8t-12t machines, mainly due to “rightsizing” the engine and the ECO-eLo control systems, already available on all Stage IIIb configurations. Fuel savings of 10% have been recorded with the H13-16XM-6 and H10-12XM-12EC series. The H8-12XM-6 and H13-16XM-6 diesel FLTs all feature load sensing hydraulics, which combined with the Cummins diesel engines, can achieve a 20% higher laden lifting speed. Even higher lifting speeds can be achieved with lower rpm. The main advantage is an additional 5% fuel saving. Further fuel saving options include a travel speed limiter covering top speed and variable set speed, and an empty seat shutdown feature with variable time delay. These are incorporated in the ECO-eLo package. A new light heavy A new 16t range will be launched in the autumn. While Hyster in Nijmegen is reluctant to discuss this design until then, the US variant was shown in early May at the AISTech 2013 Exposition in Pittsburgh (Pa). The machine displayed was a H360-36/48HD. This has a 36,000lb (16.33t) lift capacity at 36in (914mm) load centre. In the H360-48HD variant, the rating is at a 48in load centre. The machines feature load sensing hydraulics, which has allowed the Tier 4i Cummins QSB6.7 litre 6-cylinder engine to be downrated to 164hp (122kW), although advertised output for this engine is 300hp (220kW). The 13t-16t machines have the 6.7 litre engine and the European version of the new truck will also use it. This “rightsizing” fits Hyster’s philosophy of reducing fuel consumption and with it CO 2 emissions, which are not part of the EPA/EU off-highway emission regulations. Getting a boost Part of Hyster’s remarkable output last year could be due to the phasing in of Stage IIIB/Tier 4i regulations for smaller machines. The regulations were applied to off-road engines in the 130kW- 560kW range in January 2011, but for engines in the 56kW-129kW range the regulations did not come into force until January 2012.
