The new Magna Tyres M-Straddle
16.00R-25 tyre
ing and completely replaced, using
a rubber compound identical
to that used in Continental’s premium
new tyres. With this
method, around 65% of the existing
tyres can be reused and only
35% has to be new materials,
which sends out a strong environmental
message. LifeCycle sits
alongside the premium
superelastic tyres SC20, SH12 and
CSEasy and is aimed at single shift,
lighter use applications.
A recent customer for SC20
CSEasy tyres is Belgian port and
80
logistic operator Katoen Natie,
which has fitted the tyre to its entire
fleet of indoor and outdoor
use warehouse FLTs and reach
trucks in Antwerp and has reported
good results with them.
New OEM deal
In April, Sweden-based Trelleborg
Wheel Systems (TWS) and
NACCO Materials Handling
group (Hyster, Yale, Utilev) announced
a new partnership for the
supply and fitting of replacement
tyres for the whole EMEA region.
Under this aftermarket deal, TWS
has become NACCO’s preferred
and approved supplier to end users
and dealers and will work with
dealers across the region.
In some countries, said Elio
Bartoli, TWS’s director, Europe,
replacement services will be carried
out by Interfit, TWS’s service
brand. “We built Interfit to offer
lift truck OEMs and their dealers
a service designed around their
needs and to deliver value,” said
Bartoli. TWS and NACCO will
work together to provide technical
and commercial support to the
dealer network. TWS is a major
supplier to NACCO at OEM
level globally and already operates
an aftermarket tyre programme for
NACCO in the US.
TWS is one of five business
areas in the Trelleborg Group, the
others being Trelleborg Coated
Systems, Trelleborg Industrial Solutions,
Trelleborg Offshore &
Construction and Trelleborg Sealing
Solutions. This structure was
set up in January this year.
Acquisition trail
Earlier this year (February), TWS
announced that it had acquired
the industrial tyre business of
Dutch company Industriebanden
Beheer BV, for an undisclosed
sum. “The acquisition gives us the
opportunity to expand our successful
industrial tyre service concept,
while also allowing us to
grow in the areas of service and
distribution in Europe,” said
Maurizio Vischi, TWS business
area president.
“Industriebanden commands a
strong position in the market and
has a favourable profitability
record.” Industriebanden logged
sales of around €6M in 2012,
mainly in the Dutch market.
Consolidation is the name of
the game in the industrial tyre
market. TWS finalised the purchase
of UK-based Watts Industrial
Tyres for around SEK300M
(£21.6M) in February 2011, just
a few months after Canada’s
Camoplast acquired Solideal and
all its R & D and manufacturing
facilities in Asia, Europe and
North America, including the
Solideal share in the Loadstar joint
venture with the Jinasena group
in Sri Lanka. Last year the renamed
Camoplast Solideal group acquired
a regional US aftermarket
specialist and dealer, Forklift Tires
of Florida, based in Jaxport.
QM award
Another Netherlands-based company,
Magna Tyres, was awarded
ISO 90001:2008 for its quality
management system, following a
successful audit of its headquarters
in Waalwijk by TÜV
Nederland (TÜV Nord) completed
in March. Magna sees the
certification as key to its expansion
in international markets as a
company committed to the highest
quality standards.
New tyres
An independent company with
more than 30 years experience of
OTR, industrial and truck tyre
manufacturing, Magna started radial
OTR production in 2006 and
has gradually been extending its
range. Last November it launched
the M-Straddle, a 16.00R-25 tyre
with heavy duty sidewalls and a
deep, double rib tread pattern, of
the type that is now widely
adopted by straddle carrier operators.
Terex Port Solutions (formerly
Noell Mobile Systems)
confirmed that it would be carrying
out OEM trials.
This followed the launch of
the Magna MB01 CM Container
Master, an 18.00-25 bias tyre in
40 PR rating for reach stacker and
heavy mast truck applications. This
has an E4 tread pattern and an
extra wide shoulder design. This
has been tested by another TPS
arm (Terex PPM) on a reach
stacker at the River Rhône port
of Lyon. (Magna has had an OEM
agreement with Terex in
Zweibrücken for truck-mounted
mobile cranes since 2010). The
tyre has also been fitted to Kalmar
reach stackers at Barge Terminal
Tilburg, in the Port of Rotterdam
and in Nuuk in Greenland.
As part of its OTR tyre international
expansion drive, in February
Magna appointed Construction
and Mining Solutions Ltd in
Rangiora (Canterbury) as its exclusive
dealer for New Zealand.
In March it announced a strategic
agreement covering its OTR tyres
with leading German tyre wholesaler
Interpneu. This puts Magna
in touch with German equipment
operators through Interpneu’s nationwide
service network,
Pneuhage Riefendienste.
X marks the spot
Michelin launched its X-Sraddle
dedicated straddle carrier tyre in
2003-4 and came up with a (then)
novel size for this application, 480/
95R 25, between a 16.00R-25
and 18.00R-25 cover, aimed at the
(then) emerging market for 50t
SWL machines with twin 20
spreaders. Originally it was thought
that the trend towards 4-high stacking
and heavier SWLs would call
for a full 18.00R-25 size, but this
proved not to be the case.
The X-Straddle has a double
rib pattern and is also available in
16.00R-25 size. Original tread
depth is 61/32nds (49mm) with
the 16.00R-25 and 63/32nds
(50mm) with the 480/95R 25.
Michelin has launched a new
generation of X-Straddle tyre,
called X-Straddle 2. This is designed
with more protective
sidewalls, a new bead and a new
tread for added stability, safety and
CARGO HANDLING
18.00R-25 wheel assembly for VDL AGV. Gottwald is fitting 21.00R-25
wheels to its Battery Lift AGVs. It looks as though Kalmar will be fitting this
bigger size to its new AGV, although the drive is not thought to be all-electric
longer life. Faster laden travel
speeds are possible, so typical distances
per hour of operation are
extended and this translates into
higher productivity. Michelin did
not respond to WorldCargo News’
request for more information.
Turning the wheels
UK-based GKN Wheels, part of
GKN plc, chose BAUMA in Munich
in April to launch a new, customised
15.00-23/3.0 multi-piece
wheel for container transporter
AGVs in ports. “Heavy construction
and container equipment
wheels are subject to high stresses
during their service life,” said
Gianpietro Bramé, R & D director,
GKN Wheels Europe. “We have
developed a tough, hard-working
wheel for AGVs to suit the specific
load and operating conditions.”
It is understood that GKN has
been working on this project with
Kalmar, which is developing prototype
AGVs for testing by PSA
Singapore. The wheel was developed
and manufactured by GKN
in Denmark. The development
team originally produced a rim/
wheel that was then vehiclemounted
and field-tested using
fatigue analysis and strain gauge
measuring equipment.
The prototype loads and
simulations were recorded using
special computer software and
modelling. This meant, continued
Bramé, that GKN could predict
the real lifetime impact of the
wheel with precision, and design
a product to meet that specification
accordingly.
Using new paint plant technology,
the wheel has been finished
to what is claimed to be the
highest finish available, known as
C5 High, which offers long-term
corrosion resistance even in saline
atmospheres such as seaports.
GKN has also introduced
“Swift ID” as a wheel service tool.
Data are transmitted from RF tags
attached to the wheel to handheld
readers used by the service/maintenance
team. The data from the
handheld devices can be transferred
to a central database and
accessed anywhere on-line. The
system is currently being tested on
mining equipment in Australia.
Sizing up
Container transporter AGVs are
generally fitted with 18.00-25 size
tyres mounted on multi-piece
rims. Nearly all Gottwald AGVs
in service are fitted with 18.00R-
25 tyres, for example, and this is
also the case with the new hybrid
AGVs launched recently by VDL.
However, in a departure,
Gottwald’s Lift-AGVs are fitted
with 21.00R-25 tyres. Due to the
lift platforms and the additional
deadweight of the battery array,
the vehicle is heavier and requires
larger road contact. The bigger
tyres help spread the load more
evenly. The suspension system has
also been reinforced. Judging by
the dimensions of the new GKN
rim, Kalmar is also fitting its new
AGV with 21.00-25 tyres. ❏
