Short SUMMARY
Giancarlo Franzese leads a research group on Statistical Physics of Complex Matter
at the University of Barcelona (UB), where he is Tenured Professor. He got his PhD
in Physics with honors at the University of Naples and was Associate Researcher at
the University of Roma Tre, the Boston University, the Second University of Naples
and the Center for Statistical Mechanics and Complexity of “La Sapienza” University
of Rome, before moving to Barcelona in 2003. Since 2002 he is Visiting Professor
at the Boston University Center for Polymer Studies. He has been Visiting Scientist
at UFRGS Porto Alegre (3 months in 2005-2008), Centre for BioNano Interactions–
Dublin (3 months in 2009), University of Cambridge (6 months in 2010), International
Center for Quantum Materials–Beijing (3 weeks in 2012). In 2008 he became Profesor
Titular at UB. In 2000 he won the CNR Prize for the Results as Young CNR Research
Fellow Abroadandin2012theUBIncentive Program for the Enhancement of Research
Activity prize. He was selected as Emerging investigator in soft matter by The Royal
Society of Chemistry UK in 2012. Since 2011 UB ranks him within the top 5% of its
faculty members for research. In 2013 he was accredited for being contracted as Full
Professor in Spain.
At UB he is coordinator of the Condensed Matter line of the PhD in Physics,
Professor of the Master of Advanced Physics, Professor of Physics and Professor of

ii
Biomedical Engineering. He supervised 7 Master theses and 13 PhD theses (with one
ongoing in each category). He has directed PhD thesis at UB, at Boston University
andUFRGS.HeisPIinnationalandinternationalprojects,includingaFP7European
project (of which he is national PI) funded with approximately 1 million euros (shared
among three groups). He organized 12 international conferences and chaired 5 in the
last 6 years, on subject including Physical Biology and Molecular Biophysics. He is
editor of three international journals and referee for 32 of them—including PNAS,
PlosOne, PRL, JCP—and for eight international grant agencies, including the NSF
of US, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council-UK and the Swiss
National Science Foundation.
His research focuses on complex liquids and the role of water in nanoscopic and
biological systems. He edited “Aspects of Physical Biology: Biological Water, Protein
Solutions, Transport and Replication” (Springer 2008) and published in highimpact
journals such as Nature, PNAS, and PRL, with his papers listed among
the Highly Cited Papers in Physics, the Highly Cited Papers in Chemistry and the
Core Papers in Liquid Water of the last years 1 .
His research uses theoretical calculations and numerical simulations, often collaborating
with experimental groups. He made 77 peer-reviewed publications, including
book chapters, with 59 papers in international scientific journals, and gave 80 Invited
Talks. Hewascitedmorethan2100timeswithH-index 27onGoogleScholar(H-index
Rank among the Top Scientists in Spain
Ranked among the top scientists in “PHYSICS, FLUIDS & PLASMAS” 6
and “PHYSICS, MATHEMATICAL” 7
Citation indices: H index = 27, V index = 2.11 (> 1 =
success), M index = 1.35
The Hirsch’s citation index H (i.e. the number of publications with more
citations than their ranking in the list of most cited publications) is H=27 8 .
The Vaidya’s V index is V=2.11. V>1 indicates a successful researcher
9 .
The V index is calculated on the basis of the H index as follows.
The Academic Age (number of years doing reserach) is N Y =20.
The Hirsc’s M index is M=H/N Y =1.35 10 .
Numberofhoursdevotedtoteaching[seeFig.1pag. 6]andadministration
N T = 1075×2+N Y ×(365−30)/7×5×2 = 11721.4
The Proportion of time devoted to research (average over Academic Age)
is P=(N Y ×1650−N T )/(N Y ×1650)=0.64
The Vaidya’s V index is V=H/(N Y ×P)=2.11
Editorial conventions. In this field the authors are not conventionally listed
in alphabetical order but in a specific order. First author: main researcher
that has carried out the body of the research. Last author: senior author,
normally leading the research. Corresponding author: can be assigned to the
first author, usually a student or a post-doc, or the lead author, depending
on the team choice.
Total number of citations N C =2152.
Total number of publications (including preprints on cond-mat archive that
are counted in Google Scholar) N P =81.
Average number of citations per article N C /N P =26.6.
Number of publications being the first author N 1 =27.
Number of publications as the last author N ∞ =26.
Total number of coauthors N A =360.
Average number of citations per author N C /N A =5.98.
Personal Contribution PC=[N 1 /N P +N P /N A +N ∞ /(4N P )]/[1+N P /N A +
1/4]= 43.3%: the Personal contribution corresponds to the % of the total
impact of publications. The Personal contribution is calculated assigning to
each article a score 1 + 1/(N A /N P ) + 1/4, divided as folows: 1 for the 1st
author, 1/4 for the last author, 1/(N A /N P ) for any author (including the 1st
and the last).
Personal Impact Factor PIF=N C /N P ×PC=11.5.
The PIF should be compare with a reference IF in the field, such as the
Physical Review Letters IF=7.9.
Hence, my Personal Impact Factor is approximately 1.5 time the Physical
Review Letters Impact Factor (PIF/IF PRL =1.46).
