The recent death of Neil Archbold, chair of
the ESHG for some years, was a great loss,
especially to those who work on the history
of geology in Australia. Neil had made a
number of plans for the future of the ESHG,
which the Committee will be attempting to
carry out in the coming year. Newsletter
No 37 later this year will pay tribute to Neil's
activities in the history field, and an obituary
has already appeared in Newsletter No 36.
The Royal Society of Victoria is planning a
meeting in Melbourne in Neil's honour on
Friday 24 November 2006, as well a Central
Victoria field trip on the following day, and a
publication based on the meeting papers, in
all of which the ESHG will play a significant
part, a number of the speakers being ESHG
members. An Archbold prize for work in Earth
sciences history is under consideration by the
committee.
Accepting the position of ESHG chair and
following on from Neil Archbold is not a task
I take on lightly. However we have a strong
Committee in Melbourne, and we hope that
together we can continue to further the
original aims of the ESHG. Here are those
aims again, for your consideration. There are
aspects we might select for particular action
over the next year or so, and your
suggestions are invited.
We invite all GSA members interested in the
history of our science to join the group, take
part in its activities, and suggest what we
might do in the future.
The Specialist Group for
Geochemistry, Mineralogy
and Petrology recently
produced a vibrant new
postcard flyer to promote
its benefits and services
to members – an excellent
promotional tool!
The business office is available to
all the GSA's specialist groups
