We have the new laptop that the club agreed to
purchase. It will be used for the newsletter, the
Rally and all Club business. I hope to be able to do
the newsletter with a little less effort and some
changes in the next month or so. I hope you will
like the changes. This one will be about the same.
The Polar Bear ride was a big success. There is
more information on it as well as photos in this
newsletter. I would like to thank Rob and Kay Brant
for their hospitality after the ride. We had a good
turnout for the ride as well as the soup, chili and
goodies the Kay and Ron provided. It was
excellent. Thanks folks, for all you did to make this
a success. A special thanks to Ron for planning
and leading the ride.
Our next meeting will be at Bloodworth’s for the
Chili cook off. Bring your crockpot full of Chili for
everyone to taste and judge. We’ll see who has the
winning chili recipe. There will be a 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd
place cash prize winner.
Please let me know if you are planning to be there.
We will need to know how many plates, drinks, and
all the other things to have ready for that night. We
also need to let David and Virginia know how many
to plan for the year.
I am still looking for ideas for programs for this
year. If you have any ideas or want to present a
program yourself, just let me know.
We are planning a Tech Session in March at Andy
Valentine’s. You will be hearing more about that in
the next month by emails. Don’t forget to send me
any news you have. I like to hear about trips, rides,
new technologies on bikes, and things you think
someone would like to know about.
RIDING, FLYING AND P.S.I.
By Hack Tidman
Right after Christmas I drove to the airport to
pick up my daughter, son-in-law, and their kids. I asked
my daughter how the flight went and she said my fiveyear-old
granddaughter had been crying because as they
were landing, her ears began to hurt.
I don’t know about you but my ears are very
sensitive. Pressure in my ears builds up even going up
six floors in an elevator. I can build up pressure riding
from my house down the street for the first half mile.
But I know how to fix this problem.
Do you know why babies and small children cry
when descending to land on a commercial aircraft It’s
because pressure builds up outside their head or inner ear
and causes pain. You may suffer the same problem and
have been living with it all your life.
I am not a doctor, so what I am telling you works
for me and will probably work for you. But I do not
know why the Airlines do not publish this information.
Probably because of liability lawsuits. So take this
information with a grain of salt and do with it what you
want.
When I joined the Navy Air Corps some fifty-six
years ago, and we were going through training, they put
us in a decompression tank. This was about the size of a
trailer of a tractor-trailer rig. We sat in a seat and were
given an oxygen mask. They said they were going to
take us up to thirty thousand feet and we would do some
activities after taking our masks off. So after being
sealed up in the tank, the pumps starting drawing the air
out of the chamber, simulating climbing in altitude. We
watched the needle on the gauge climb to 10,000 ft.
when we were told to put our oxygen masks on. Then we
continued up to the 30,000 ft. mark, where the
instructors told us to take our masks off and perform a
few simple tasks. After 60 seconds or so, we started
loosing it. It was sort of being unable to think anymore.
We put our oxygen masks back on and we slowly
started back down. We found out if we simulate blowing
our nose gently, we could force pressure back into our
ears or head. When I fly now, and on losing altitude, and
coming in to land, I simulate blowing my nose about
every 5,000 ft. To do this, I hold my nose closed and
pretend to blow my nose ever so gently. This makes my
ears pop. It may be awkward at first but keep practicing
and you can do this just fine.
On a related subject, why don’t we need oxygen
masks when we fly in planes today Because we pump
air into the planes by compressors that allow us to
breathe normally as we fly along. Even at 35,000 ft. we
can get enough oxygen to not have to wear an oxygen
mask. The planes are sealed much better today.
Why am I bringing this subject up Because as
motorcyclists, we are usually heading for the hills and
mountains. That’s where the curvy roads are located.
And that is where your ears can get stopped up, just like
they do flying. And this is how you can relieve the
pressure.
Somer Hooker’s ride for the Polar Bear Ride
Hack Tidman, David Brown and Ray May.
THE POLAR BEAR RIDE THAT WAS
By Ron Brant
In the three years Kay and I have been hosting the Club’s
Polar Bear Ride, we have yet to experience weather that would
remotely justify the ride’s moniker. Finally the weather
thumbs its nose at Al’s dire predictions and provides us with a
day suitable for a New Years Day jaunt. “Are you crazy” you
ask Perhaps a little background history is in order. The first
fifteen years of my riding career was spent 50 miles Southwest
of St. Louis Missouri. For those of you who don’t pay
attention to weather outside of an hour radius from your home,
St. Louis has and still gets serious winter weather. A long
standing St. Louis motorcycling tradition is the New Years
Day gathering at the base of the Gateway Arch. Routinely,
temperatures hovered in the single digits when we departed on
our 50 mile ride into “the city”, as we country boys referred to
St. Louis. We would show up with body temperatures just
slightly north of hypothermia and watch the really crazy ones,
the Belleville Ski Club, water ski on the Mississippi River.
The point is a Polar Bear Ride on a fifty degree day provides
little personal challenge nor does it inspire campfire tales
where the mileage and temperature go opposite directions as
the adult beverages flow. But I digress…
For those of you who were benchwarmers rather than players
in the game, we had a great 2008 Polar Bear Ride filled with
good roads, great scenery, hot food, fellowship and even an
ironic opportunity to lose Steve Stratz on a group ride! Our
route meandered through Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson,
Sumner and Robertson Counties with visits to notable
destinations such as Hickory Grove, Castillion Springs,
Bethpage and Rock Bridge. Road selections included Canoe
Branch Road and Hogback Ridge Road.
Many thanks are in order for the club members and friends of
the club who rode the fifteen bikes departing Pucketts: Kay
Brant, Curt Hagenau, Charlie Holt, Logan (sorry but I don’t
have your last name), Larry Dreaden, Steve Stratz, Allen
Brosche and Ray Ingram. Other riders included Kevin
Bullock (co-ride leader), Rick Culwell, Wendell Elrod, Trey
Hall, Jake and Cheryl Jacobs. My apologies for not recalling
names for the Aprilia rider and the cruiser rider; we were glad
you rode along!
We’re working to make the BMW Club of
Nashville a riding club. Come join us.
BMW Says Patience is a Virtue
Woodcliff Lake, NJ - January 24, 2008... Motorcycle
enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the arrival of BMW's new F
800 GS will need to be a bit more patient, as production
of the middleweight dual-purpose enduro will be delayed
due to worldwide demand for the popular F 650 GS. The
F 800 GS is expected to be available at US BMW
Motorrad retailers in Fall 2008, making it a 2009 model.
Fulfilling a need for a pure off-road oriented motorcycle
that still has all the power, handling and reliability
required for long-distance adventure touring as well as
on-street handling, the F 800 GS is perfectly positioned
as a middleweight dual-purpose enduro. The bike,
representing yet another market segment in BMW's
dual-sport category, follows in the footsteps of its highly
acclaimed "older brother" - the R 1200 GS - which traces
its roots back to the early 1980s when BMW won the
grueling Paris-Dakar rally four times with its trailblazing
dual-purpose R 80 G/S.
saddle both comfortable and enjoyable. A generous 8.7
gallon fuel tank allows the rider to cover vast areas of
territory easier and optional ABS enhances braking
safety when required.
The most significant technological development found on
both the 2008 R 1200 GS and GS Adventure models is
optional enduro ESA (Electronic Suspension
Adjustment) technology (a first-time offering for BMW
off-road bikes) with three damper settings - Sport,
Normal and Comfort -- giving riders the option of
customizing both front and rear suspensions to his or her
specifications. Whether they are navigating the urban
jungle or touring off the beaten path, these GS models
have set a new standard for the entire adventure bike
category.
The F 800 GS, BMW's latest dual-purpose enduro,
features an asymmetrical double headlight and a look
that is sleek, trim and 100% aggressive. With a compact
85-horsepower parallel twin engine, lightweight steel
trellis frame and double-sided swingarm, along with a
chain drive and longer front and rear suspension travel,
there has never been a BMW dual-purpose machine
offering such a unique blend of power, comfort and offroad
muscle.
The 2008 BMW Motorrad GS line features the upgraded
R 1200 GS and GS Adventure models, which will arrive
in dealerships this Spring. Since their debut in 2004, the
versatile R 1200 GS and its rugged companion, the R
1200 GS Adventure, have earned praise from
motorcycle enthusiasts and the press for their
exceptional performance both on and off the road.
The R 1200 GS has earned award after award, including
Cycle World's Best Open Class Street Bike and the
International Journalist's Panel "Best Bike in the World."
For 2008, this go-anywhere motorcycle has several
enhancements that meet the demands of serious
motorcyclists on both dirt and pavement. A new
aluminum handlebar which can be mounted in two
positions offers increased ergonomics, making its seated
(or standing while off-road) position even more
comfortable. Its engine offers 5% more power and its
new transmission ratios also mean quicker acceleration
and better low-speed traction.
The R 1200 GS Adventure - named "Best Adventure
Bike" three years in a row by editors of Motorcyclist
Magazine - also offers a number of significant features
that make it even more adept at riding to the ends of the
earth. In addition to new design elements, including twopart,
two-color hand protectors, the new 2008 R 1200
GS Adventure provides a taller windshield, adjustable
seat and extra wide foot pegs making long days in the
Racer Nate Kern’s Trailer
Burglarized
Burglars broke into BMW racer Nate Kern’s trailer, taking
several personal racing items, according to a police
report.
The burglary took place at the BMW Motorcycles of
Atlanta dealership over the weekend of January 12-13,
Bob Woolridge, co-owner of the dealership, told police,
according to an offense report from the Marietta Police
Department.
The trailer’s doors were discovered open by employees
at the dealership the morning of January 14. Missing
were two of Kern’s Suomy helmets, Kern's custom
Vanson racing suit, three pairs of Sidi boots, three sets
of Chickhawk tire warmers and other parts, the police
report stated.
The black and white leathers carry BMW Xplor logos,
and have a N8 logo on the hump and "Kern" across the
back.
Police said the burglars appeared to have wiped
fingerprints off the doors of the trailer and the cabinets
where the gear was stored.
Woolridge also reported that a custom 8-foot-long
aluminum ramp was stolen from his pickup truck.
Anyone with information should contact the Marietta
Police Department at (770) 794-5300.
cold Saturday morning. We loaded the bus, loaded our
selves and happy hour began. Arriving in Atlanta around
noon, we were greeted with a snow storm and a strong
cold wind.
It looks like BMW really is going dirt bike riding. They
had on display their new 450 dirt bike which at least
appears to be a well built and potentially competitive
machine.
After everyone had a chance to get checked into the
Omni Hotel, we all made our way over to the show.
But truly the show stopper was the GS 800. There was a
constant crowd around this bike. I never had a chance to
take a picture of the bike without someone on it. This
bike looks better in person and will be a very sought
after model. If you think you are going to want one of
these bikes, you best place your deposit now.
The show was bigger than every with all the
manufacturers represented and loads of vendors with
everything you could think of. BMW Motorcycles display
was loaded with all the 2008 models and some of the
exciting upcoming vehicles that most of us have not
The day ended at the Latitudes Lounge at the Omni
Hotel where David and Virginia bought everyone a round
and we enjoyed some great hors d’ hours. We shared
with each other what we had seen at the show and
enjoyed a relaxing evening.
