A writing skills class for children ages 3 – prekindergarten. 

Children will learn to write letters, 

numbers, and their names while exploring fun, fitness, 

and creativity through shapes, colors, and alphabet

Enjoy this fun music and fitness class featuring muscle 

warm-ups, body stretches, floor exercises to improve 

self-confidence and enhance balance. New ways of 

self-expression will be explored through musical

MOMMY and ME

A parent/guardian will assist their child by leading

Level 1*: Children will learn alternating arm action, 

supported floating and kicking on front and back, and 

bubble blowing.

Level 2: Children will learn floating and kicking on front 

and back, combined stroke on front and back, rhythmic 

breathing and turning over front to back. 

Level 3: Children will learn the basics of elementary 

backstroke, diving from side of the pool and treading 

water. 

Level 4: Children will learn the basics of breaststroke, 

butterfly and turns at the wall. 

Level 5: Children will become proficient in all 4 strokes. 

They will build endurance and be able to complete 50 

yards in each stroke. 

Swim Stroke Clinic: Children ages 7 and older who want 

to perfect their swim strokes and improve their 

endurance for competitive swimming.

scheduled on Sundays, Mondays, & Fridays.

- Must be able to swim twenty-five yards. 

- Must not be a member of USS Swimmers.

Farmington Recreation is now accepting team 

applications for our Adult Men’s Basketball League with 

play scheduled to begin on Thursdays in November and 

run through February. A maximum of six teams will be 

accepted for the 2013 – 2014 season. Those

FARMINGTON VALLEY FIELD HOCKEY 

Girls Grades 5 – 8 

The Farmington Valley Field Hockey League will be 

comprised of teams from Avon, Burlington, Canton, 

Farmington, Granby, and Simsbury. The program 

includes one practice and one game per week. This is a 

recreational league that requires travel to away games. 

Each player is responsible for their own field hockey 

stick, cleats, mouth guard, shin guards, and eye 

protection. A reversible game jersey will be provided. 

The 7 th & 8 th grade team will play 11 v. 11 (The Town of 

Farmington will provide Goalie equipment.) while the 5 th 

& 6 th grade team will play 8 v. 8 (No Goalie).

PASSIVE RECREATION – WALKING & HIKING TRAILS 

BURNT HILL TRAIL 

This trail, close to the West Hartford town line is 

located between Farmington Avenue and Middle Road. 

It is near several flood control dikes and connects with 

65 acres of property which the Town of Farmington 

purchased from Hartford. 

CANAL AQUEDUCT 

This towpath, located two miles north of Farmington 

Center off of Rt. 10, runs for 700 feet to the 

Farmington River where two stone abutments were 

built to transport barges. This land, donated by James 

Thompson, was the first piece of property given to the 

Farmington Land Trust. 

FARMINGTON MEMORIAL FOREST 

The Memorial Forest was established in memory of 

those who lost their lives during World War I. Land 

was donated to the town by many surrounding 

residents. In 1945, 2 nd Lt. Vincent H. Core died crash 

landing his P47 Thunderbolt plane in this then remote 

area, courageously avoiding residential neighborhoods 

in Bristol. The Forest is a level walk that is all 

woodlands with access from several points. The main 

entrance is on Plainville Avenue. Walking and biking are 

allowed from dawn to dusk. 

FARMINGTON RESERVOIR TRAIL 

This trail is located on 57 acres of land purchased by 

the Town of Farmington from the Unionville Water 

Department. Parking is accessed from Reservoir Road. 

The trail to the west side of the reservoir is easy, 

while the trail to the east is more difficult and 

eventually leads to the Metacomet Trail. 

HANDICAPPED ACCESSIBLE TRAIL 

The trail is located along the Farmington River off of 

Railroad Avenue in Unionville. The initial property was 

donated to the Farmington Land Trust by local 

developer, Tom Zipp, in memory of his parents, Elmer & 

Claire Zipp. Land Trust Director, Dick Noyes, 

suggested that a handicapped accessible fishing pier be 

built in the area. In order to position the pier at a 

bend in the river providing a spectacular view north, 

the site was moved to adjacent land which had been 

donated by the Douglas-Mount family. Local business 

men, Jake Carrier and partners Geoff Sager & Peter 

Dunn joined Mr. Zipp and architect, David Eveleth, in 

developing a recreational area specifically designed to 

be wheelchair accessible. 

McMANAMA TRAIL 

This trail was established in 1982 in honor of John 

McManama, a principal at West District School. The 

land was once part of a farm owned by The Bushley 

Family, whose house and barn still stand on Coppermine 

Road. There are approximately 40 acres of varying 

habitats and interesting boulders know as glacial 

erratics. The red blazed trail begins behind the school 

near the upper playground and enters the woods 

through a small area edged with rocks. 

METACOMET TRAIL 

The Metacomet Trail in Connecticut follows the 

Hanging Hills in Meriden to the Massachusetts border 

for approximately 51 miles. It is named for the Indian, 

Metacomet (Prince Philip), who is supposed to have 

directed the burning of Simsbury from one of the 

summits. See three maps: Metacomet/Mattabesett, 

U.S. 6 to Tariffville, and Metacomet – North Section in 

the Connecticut Walk Book – A Trail Guide to the 

Connecticut Outdoors. 

NANCY CONKLIN TRAIL 

The land for this trail was donated to the Farmington 

Land Trust by the Cowles family. The Farmington 

Garden Club cleared part of the trail in honor of one of 

its founders, Nancy Conklin. Parking is on Meadow Road 

and the trail runs north along the Pequabuck River. 

SHADE SWAMP SANCTUARY 

This 800 acre sanctuary is owned by the State of 

Connecticut and contains two nature trails located on 

the northern side of Rt. 6. The White Trail, on the 

west side of New Britain Avenue, is 2.5 miles of level 

walking with parking at the entrance to the DEP 

Headquarters, now decommissioned. The Blue Trail, on 

the east side of New Britain Avenue, is 1.5 miles of 

level and hilly walking paths with parking near the old 

pavilion. This trail contains the remains of an old 

roadside wildlife area that was abandoned in the early 

1960’s. 

SUBURBAN PARK 

This park is a historic landmark in the center of 

Unionville. It contains the remnants of an “electrical 

amusement park” that flourished from 1895 to 1905. 

Purchased by the Town of Farmington, it provides 20.5 

acres of open space with two miles of hilly walking 

trails. The park contains five circular “kettles” formed 

during the glacial age. Best parking is at the Lion’s 

Park at the end of Cottage Street off Rt. 167.

RECREATION SCHOLARSHIP FUND 

Farmington Recreation recognizes that there may be 

residents who cannot afford the fees for some 

programs. A Recreation Scholarship Fund has been 

established to assist residents who are experiencing 

financial difficulties. You can help support the 

scholarship fund by adding $1.00 (or more) to your 

registration fees. 

PROGRAM POLICIES 

CANCELLATION INFORMATION 

‣ Two business days prior to the program start date, 

a decision will be made to cancel the program if 

necessary. If cancelled, you will be notified and 

will have the option of transferring to another 

program or obtaining a full credit or refund. 

‣ Farmington Recreation reserves the right to cancel 

any program due to low enrollment. 

‣ Farmington Recreation reserves the right to 

change the time, date, location, and to make other 

revisions in any program. 

‣ Every effort will be made to make up cancelled 

programs due to weather, etc. 

REFUND INFORMATION 

Since programs are self-supporting and commitments 

need to be made to instructors and staff, the 

following is the Department‟s refund policy: 

‣ Refunds, minus a $10.00 processing fee, will be 

given when requested up to three business days 

prior to the start of the program. 

‣ Once the decision has been made to run a 

particular program no refund will be given unless a 

substitute can be found or there is a medical 

emergency. 

‣ Refunds will be issued for medical emergencies 

when accompanied by a physician’s note, which must 

be received within five business days following the 

conclusion of the program. 

‣ Absolutely no refunds will be given for any unused 

portion of a program. Fees are not prorated. 

‣ All refunds will follow the Finance Department's 

bill paying schedule. There will be no cash refunds. 

Please allow two - four weeks to process a refund. 

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE 

Financial Assistance Program: Farmington 

residents may qualify for a reduction in the cost of 

a program based upon the Federal Income Poverty 

Guidelines. An eligibility application needs to be 

completed and verified to qualify for a discount on 

the fees.

a payment in full at the time of registration, please
