Oldest settlement in the <strong>Ulm</strong> region in the early y<br />
Neolithic period.<br />
854<br />
King Ludwig the German seals a document in “Hulma”, creating the first<br />
official reference to <strong>Ulm</strong> on July 22, 854.<br />
1184<br />
<strong>Ulm</strong> receives the status of Free Imperial <strong>City</strong>.<br />
1377<br />
Construction of the <strong>Ulm</strong> Minster as a townspeople‘s church begins on<br />
June 30, 1377.<br />
1397<br />
The <strong>Ulm</strong> constitution – the “Great Civic Oath” – comes into effect, controlling<br />
the distribution of power between the Guilds and the Patricians. The Mayor of<br />
<strong>Ulm</strong> still makes this oath every year on “Schwörmontag” (Oath Monday).<br />
1500<br />
<strong>Ulm</strong> is a successful trading hub. Above<br />
all, there is a great demand in Europe for<br />
fustian cloth from <strong>Ulm</strong>. At the same time,<br />
the city is one of the most significant<br />
artistic centres in Southern Germany.<br />
1530<br />
With a large majority, <strong>Ulm</strong>’s citizens<br />
decide to convert to Protestantism.<br />
1712<br />
Venice’s power,<br />
Augsburg’s glory,<br />
Nuremberg’s humour,<br />
Strasbourg’s weapons,<br />
and <strong>Ulm</strong>’s money rule<br />

Rhyme from around 1500<br />
From 1712, thousands of emigrants, “Danube Swabians”, use the river to<br />
reach what today are Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania.<br />
1770<br />
The city is declared bankrupt in 1770, due to diseases, war and extortion by a<br />
wide range of besiegers.<br />
1805<br />
The Battle of Elchingen takes place nearby on October 14, 1805, leading to the<br />
handover of <strong>Ulm</strong> by the Austrians to the victorious Napoleon.<br />
1810<br />
