BUILD REPORT
Justin Ratcliffe/superyachtart.com
Can I Take Your Order Sir
This has been a year of spectacular growth, at least that’s what we all say at conferences, boatshows and in print. At GSF
Barry Gilmour and Neil Miller predicted a plateau-ing of demand yet later Steven Rattner was extremely “bullish” about the
growth seeing no cessation. Here our Order Book lists all the yards building over 30 metres worldwide today, which should
allow you to decide who is correct – or at least was for the period from 1st Nov 2006 to 1st Nov 2007. Just as last year
we are categorising and following builds in three stages. Shaded in blue are contracts signed in the sample period. Shaded
in purple are those signed before the period for completion after November 2007 and finally in grey shading are those
completed and handed over since November 2006. As ever there is a variation in the willingness of yards to furnish all such
data; some consider publicising it a real service for future clients and a matter of pride and promotion of their competences
and achievements, others still regard this as data they would rather keep private due to their own desire for confidentiality
or for their clients.
We asked for the usual information; however, one very significant change is that for the first time we show separate launch
and handover dates. These are distinct and separate events and the time between the two can vary from yard to yard,
project to project, LOA and gt; all have a profound effect on how long the interval between is. Handover, though, is a real
and contractual defining point at which the project changes colour (regardless of the shiny topcoat she wears) in our listing
from purple (in build) to grey (delivered). The statistics, analysis and trends of the order book follow on from this listing
where the growth for 2007 can be easily determined. Throughout 2008 we also plan to follow this information with our
comprehensive Yacht Register on our website portal, www.synfo.com, therefore please make sure you keep us updated
with all your orders and deliveries so that we can track the market data as it happens.
The Global Build Report is based on information sent to us by the shipyards themselves.
While we make every effort to verify the accuracy of the information submitted we cannot do so for every build, project and yard.
However, we will be putting systems in place to increase the depth of such verification and cross checking in time for the TAR of 2008.
Statistics
ANALYSIS and SUMMARY
Another year, another interesting period of growth
the upward rise of order books and delivery schedules,
suggesting that we are not slowing down. The following
pages demonstrate where we are today, where we
have been and I will try to suggest where we might
be heading. Not an easy job, but one worth
speculating over.
Those who were lucky enough to hear the words of
wisdom shared during the Global Superyacht Forum last
November 2007 will have been enlightened by Steven
Rattner’s vision (see Stern Words) and echoes of the
Business Summit that suggested that we may have been
enjoying too much success on paper or in print, but
perhaps not enough success on the Balance Sheet.
I think is one of the key words for the future and has to
be the focus of our industry – Profit. We try to explain
the numbers and demonstrate what and who is making
the market; over the past decade, it is the same
territories that win in terms of market share, and the
same key brands that demonstrate a healthy order book,
year in year out.
The names Feadship, Lurrsen, Benetti and Amels all seem
to rank in the upper levels of the shipyard league table;
the yacht report 227
2007/08 statistics
however, in 2008 and beyond, we plan to add into
the mix the words gross tonnage, a more accurate
representation of market growth and volume of orders.
It is obviously very difficult to compare tonnage and
price to create some form of equation, but we intend to
try to create a model of quality, volume, length, brand
and any other key parameters that could help breakdown
the market and deliver some data that truly represents
the position we are in.
Although, as Steven Rattner suggests, Owners really
do brag about the length of their yachts, more so
than the tonnage, but perhaps when more clarity and
transparency is upon us then it will be more important
what builder you have bought from and what that
means in terms of a price point, in the same way you
would with a car. It exists in the realms of the real players
that at the top of the market people invariably know
what they are buying; I just wonder if there should be
more information available about re-sale values and
depreciation or ROI numbers. It may in fact help the
market mature.
As you will see from the figures, the order book once
again shows an increase in total orders in yards today,
again a healthy representation of the growth in HNWIs
and perhaps a demonstration that yachts are the last
and most expensive thing money can buy in the market.
This was reported by Rattner in his video conference:
the HNWIs are suffering from wealth fatigue – so much
money and nothing expensive enough to buy in order to
spend suitable proportions of wealth, a major headache
if ever there was one.
The key issue we are potentially going to face in the
future is the fact that the market potential is huge
and there are more and more people coming into the
superyacht arena with lots of money to spend; we are
just not geared up todeliver and meet the supply and
demand imbalance. The order book shows 445 units
in build and the delivery chart shows 253 actual yachts
handed over, whereas the potential suggests that the
number of people who could in fact order 30 metres
plus yachts is 90,000, so in fact we are still only
scratching the surface.
I wonder why this is – in essence the market has made
a rod for its own back, allowing Owners and Designers
to over-complicate the manufacturing process, removing
the words ‘efficiency’ and ‘standardisation’. As you will
have read over the past few years, many of the big
brands are starting to invent standard product, semicustom
ranges and yachts that have the flexibility to
change living space, but not machinery space. This will
in theory have an impact on future order books, once
the yards introduce more processes that will allow them
to build faster and more efficiently, hopefull culminating
in more profit and perhaps more investment. When you
consider the speed at which a GV or BBJ is built today,
we could perhaps be looking at 50-metre yachts being
built within a 12–18-month delivery programme.
There have been one or two new additions to the yard
list, and these new kids on the shipyard block have
ultimately to prove themselves, not only by delivering to
market expectations, but also – perhaps when it comes
to re-sale value – the real judge of a good pedigree.
ORDER BOOK GROWTH
1998–2008
While our market has shown some very exciting figures
over the past decade, the market has started to flatten
out. As you can see, the number of orders is limited to
the low 400s, up from 80 plus orders a decade ago. In
simple terms, I think this is a combination of build slot
limitation and over-runs from the previous year, coupled
with some new arrivals in the market place. When you
look at the list of builders and apply a rule of thumb that
the majority of yards are only geared up for single digit
build slots, we can see that the market is always limited
by capacity. The only way to grow the business has to be
a combination of faster build times and more new yards
entering the arena. This will hopefully be influenced by
the increase in new Asian yards and perhaps some of the
US yards investing in their semi-custom and production
strategies. If the dollar stays where it is for the next year,
one can anticipate overseas buyers looking into the
American market for some very attractive build deals.
However, even with the weakened dollar, the most
important graph demonstrates a drop off in the USA
orders over the past 12 months and a stagnant position
in the ROW sectors, leaving Europe as the most dynamic
and booming sector. But on the next page, you will see
that both the lesser markets have delivered above their
previous year’s quota and as a result replaced their
deliveries with new business. This is why it is so important
to look at both the order book and deliveries in close
proximity, to get a true reflection of the market’s
performance.
2007 saw a record number of deliveries, breaking the
250 barrier as we predicted last year. This is obviously
a key indicator that not only did the market meet most
of its objectives, but that the industry has also in fact
replaced a huge number of these floating assets with
new projects. This is a sure sign that the market is
moving forward; however, the only issue is that looking
at the forward deliveries for the next two years seem
limited in units, but as in previous years, the majority
of the mass market manufacturers and larger
production builders seem capable of replacing these
quite effectively. I am not suggesting that there is a
negative position on the horizon, but more a status
quo, always limited by the current capacity of the
shipyards themselves. As you can see, in the past
decade, the market has in fact tripled from 87 units
delivered to today’s 253, I think there are very few
markets or business sectors that can say that.
ORDER BOOK GROWTH
BY SIZE
1999–2008
As is always the case, it is not only important to look
at the market as whole but by sector and size, but also
in terms of actual signed orders in the past 12 months.
The following graph shows decline in the smaller yacht
sector, below 40 metres, some growth in the 40- to
50-metre market, but perhaps more importantly the
increase in the number of new orders and projects as
a whole in the 50-metre plus market.
While this on paper suggests that this market is
expanding in terms of units, the key thing to analyse,
which we will be doing in 2008, is the actual GRT of
the 50-metre plus market. While at the upper end the
number of projects are growing , it is fair to say that the
actual gross tonnage in this market is also increasing, the
projects are getting bigger and of far greater volume
and significant budgets.
One particular project we have been watching that is
above the 120-metre mark is reported to have a contract
price in excess of €330 million, which when compared
with 3 x 40m at perhaps €50 million shows the
discrepancy when comparing length and number of units
side by side. In 2008, our analysis will dig deeper and
make some new and more specific references and
comparisons. The market is growing and ultimately each
size category seems to feed the next, so while we have
seen a decrease in the 30- to 40-metre sector, we are
still witnessing a feeder market for the 40-metre and
50-metre plus markets in the next five or more years.
The 30- to 40-metre sector is signing twice the number
of orders per annum than the 40- to 50-metre and
50-metre plus sectors combined, this bodes well for
the future as clients trade up in size, as they always do,
it’s a ego thing.
As is clearly demonstrated by the graph to
the right, this segment of the market is
showing a decline in terms of the number of
units; however, on further analysis, it becomes
clear that the builders who were in fact part of
this category last year have in fact upgraded
their build programme to above40 metres loa;
therefore they have left one market segment
and moved up the league table into large
yachts. This is purely an indication of how
the market moves; one would expect other
yards working in the below 30-metre sector
to follow suit in the next few years and create
a whole new picture.
In the last five years we have seen some
impressive growth in the 40-metre plus sector
– almost 100%. While the number of units
is still relatively small, there is nothing to
suggest that it will not follow the upward
trend. The 1,200 or so projects delivered over
the past five years will hopefully generate a
new wave of clients continually upgrading
from the sub-40-metre sector into this ever
expanding market place. With approximately
750 yachts delivered between 30 and 40
metres in the past five years. This should
create a market for the next five years in the
upper sectors, perhaps even more than ever;
after all the price jump from one to the other
is still significant, but in the world of the
HNWI, it is still relatively small change.
Ten years ago there were less than 25 orders
over 50 metres, a staggering figure when you
consider today’s marketplace for the average
superyacht. The leap from 62 orders three
years ago to 144 today shows an incredibly
active market and as has been consistently
highlighted throughout this issue, the number
of people that can afford to play at this level
is increasing tenfold and the current wave
of semi-custom and standard versions in the
50- to 70-metre range makes the process
of market growth even more predictable.
With brokers crying out for build slots and
the secondhand market dry of inventory, the
fuelling of this upper sector is likely to be jet
propelled for the next decade. We just need
a more build slots as we seem to be almost
at saturation point, when analysing the
shipyard build slots.
As can be seen from the variety of historic and current pie charts, Europe dominates the business and as a percentage of
the industry, the American business is losing market share; however, as a percentage of the new orders, America seems
to be picking up speed; perhaps this is currency related.
This year, when looking at Europe, their 72% market share can be further analysed to create some form of league table,
with Italy obviously dominating the field, with over half of the EU units being built in their yards, more than all of the
units in build outside of the EU. An impressive statistic, but one that clearly relates to their sheer volume of facilities
and the capacity for the sub 50-metre projects
across their territories. While Germany and
The Netherlands show a sub 10% market share
in terms of units, once again if we refer to the
GT of their orders, the pie chart would change
dramatically. Later on this year, this data will be
presented on Synfo.com to clearly show who is
leading the market in terms of number of units,
who is leading the market in terms of volume
and, perhaps one day, who is leading the market
in terms of turnover or at least estimated contract
value. It is very easy to create statistics from all of
the data we collate and analyse and make them
tell varying stories, but ultimately the best way to
see who is in fact winning the real business is to
refer back to the tables and look at the number
of deliveries, the number of new orders; and the
one that has the biggest volume of both is in fact
surely the market leader. Until we can analyse GT
in more detail and contract values, the true figure
of who is the most financially successful is still
speculative, but we have an idea.
While the motoryacht market is by far the biggest sector and will
continue to be so, with just under 400 units in build or on order
each year, the sailing yacht market has seen a dramatic 24%
leap in projects in build. A huge number in percentage terms,
but which only amounts to 10 units year on year growth.
While America has seen only one sailing yacht in build at the
moment and the ROW has remained equally static with their
12 units, again probably based on build slots in the specific
yards, Europe has seen all of the new order sail their way, as
yards have increased capacity and we have added new yards
to the list.In the motoryacht sector, both the US and the ROW
markets have seen a decline in the number of projects on order,
but again the EU has enjoyed huge success with an expectation
to break the 300 motoryachts barrier in the next 12 months, as
more yards come on stream in new areas like Turkey and Russia.
The 1:4 ratio of sailing yachts to motor yachts is not expected to
fluctuate much, as the market for sailing yachts has always been
the domain of the purist yachtsman and not for the client who
just wants to order a piece of floating real estate.
With well over 36 km of boat builds to their name, the
Italians should be rightfully triumphant in the number of
yachts they build across all classes. However, what we
have identified with the two bar charts above is that in the
world of superyachts, the Italians are not top dogs. In fact
Germany and The Netherlands have built a vast number of
specifically high-volume yachts – as identified by the gross
tonnage amounts above.
Breaking this down further, the really specialist shipyards
are incredibly focused in northern Europe, with four
German, four Dutch and two Italian yards comprising all
top ten spots.Taking this knowledge and investigating
further in the two graphs below, we can see that the
advent of truly super yachts is not new. There have been
numerous +50-metre and only slightly fewer +70-metre
yachts built in the last 50 years. However, the number of
truly large yacht builds has exploded since the turn of the
millennium. The dashed line identifies those vessels in the
Order Book and that, in the grand scheme of builds, the
trend is in no hurry to slow down.
The last graph presents the trend of +50-metre motor
yachts versus sailing yachts in the last half century.
Despite some high-profile sailing yachts being built in
recent years, the quantity built is very stable whilst the
motor yacht has received an upward fluctuation due to
current demand. * Taken from The Yacht Register
ANNUAL REPORT SUMMARY
While there are many forms of market data and order
book information, we like to think that because we have
been looking at the market for the past 15 years and have
collated data even prior to this starting date of The Yacht
Report, we feel better qualified to comment and report
on what is happening in the large-yacht business today.
On paper it would appear that the market is growing at
a comfortable rate over all, with some newcomers adding
to the growth figures, but it is important to forecast and
perhaps speculate about the future, in the way that a
market analyst may in the financial world.
As long as the yards have a workforce and the sales men
and women of the industry have existing clients that love
their yachts, we will see the few hundred build slots being
filled in a cyclical process. As one yacht leaves the yard, it
would seem that the yard has another one in the wings
and so the order book keeps moving forward. When a
yard invests in its capacity and adds a new build shed,
this is invariably due to the number of enquiries they
receive and the confidence they have in filling that extra
slot for the next decade, with, say, three new projects.
Add this to the handful of new yards or entrants from
commercial ship building and you can demonstrate
market growth, but is it real growth
If every yard is just adding new or repeat orders to fill
their existing capacity and the more successful yards are
investing in increased facilities in order to add to their
build slots, and the newcomers are introducing the odd
new build slot and investing in a new market, it is not
exactly earth-shattering business explosion. As you can
see on the first statistical page, the order book for yachts
over 30 metres has in the last three years only grown
by 23 orders, that is fewer than eight new orders per
annum or less than 2%; while this may be a stark reality
when comparing number of units, the real growth is
demonstrated in the upper end of the business, above
45 metres.
As the sub-40-metre market shows a decline in volume,
the upper end of the scale shows huge demand from a
whole host of clients, but more specifically the Russians
who have buoyed the market with multiple orders and
securing build slots for the next five or so years. Once
they take delivery of their new bigger and better toys,
it will be very interesting if they come back for more,
or if they play with their current deliveries expected for
handover in the next 24 month or so, for the next decade
until they choose to upgrade.
While the market appears to be stable and more and
more investors and clients see yachting as a brave new
financial world, there needs to be a major shift towards
creating bigger facilities with increased capacity, more
efficient build programmes to enable the market to
deliver new builds quicker and in greater numbers,
otherwise we will stand still. I think we can expect this
from the bigger brands in Europe and the US, like
Feadship, Benetti, Amels, Lurssen, Trinity and Westport,
and definitely from the emerging Turkish and Asian yards,
but ultimately we are probably looking at 20 yards in the
next ten years developing their position in the market to
deliver over 50% of the sectors units. The remaining yards
will focus on their core expertise and keep delivering one
or two units per annum and in many cases chase a small
list of clients who will be in search of the available
remaining build slots.
The final comment and one that has been mentioned in
the past year throughout The Yacht Report pages is the
ultimate logjam in the business. No, not the lack of berths
or crew to host and man the 250 plus projects handed
over each year, but more importantly the ability for the
suppliers and sub-contractors to actually match the
demand for equipment, installation and finishing over
the next decade. While yards seem to be investing,
recruitment initiatives being developed and new marinas
are in progress or development, there is a growing
concern by all yards that the increased number of orders
does not match the capacity of the supply chain and if
this chain breaks, the domino effect could be significant.
As an industry it is vital that we ensure that the supply
and sub-contractor market is managed, supported and
partnered in order to sustain the demands of the market.
Where there is a supply and demand imbalance at the
client end of the spectrum in favour of demand, the
opposite could be said of the demand for suppliers.
With the financial world high on the agenda of the
world’s press and while banks are trying to bolster up
the world’s economy, it is not likely to put the HNWIs off
buying the latest and greatest wealth toys, but it is more
likely to impact any of the suppliers and sub-contractors
that may be being bullied by their banks or have
imbalanced payment terms from their handful of clients.
All of this points towards interesting times, and it should
keep the pages of The Yacht Report and www.synfo.com
very active over the next 24 months.
