W e e k<br />

<strong>Book</strong> <strong>Week</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> Uplands’ <strong>important</strong> <strong>events</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>year</strong>. Its primary aim<br />

<strong>is</strong> to encourage more read<strong>in</strong>g among <strong>the</strong> student community. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>year</strong> it ran from<br />

Monday 9th <strong>of</strong> Feb to Friday 13th Feb, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g with a whole <strong>School</strong> assembly<br />

where students performed funny sketches and played guess<strong>in</strong>g games <strong>of</strong> book titles<br />

with <strong>the</strong> audience. Some even sang to enterta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fellow students and read poetry<br />

to encourage <strong>the</strong>m to read more.<br />

As <strong>the</strong> week progressed, o<strong>the</strong>r activities were organized such as a <strong>Book</strong> Swap where<br />

parents and children brought <strong>in</strong> books <strong>the</strong>y do not read anymore to exchange, a door<br />

decorat<strong>in</strong>g competition, a photography competition called ‘Get Caught Read<strong>in</strong>g’<br />

where photos <strong>of</strong> students and teachers read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> odd locations are submitted. One<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> highlights <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> week was <strong>the</strong> storybook character costume parade where students<br />

from each <strong>year</strong> came to <strong>School</strong> dressed as a character out <strong>the</strong>ir favorite book.<br />

Co<strong>in</strong>cid<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>Book</strong> <strong>Week</strong>, Uplands was honoured by a v<strong>is</strong>it by Malaysian Nobel<br />

nom<strong>in</strong>ated poet and recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Malaysian Lifetime Humanitarian Award, Mr.<br />

Cecil Rajendra who read and d<strong>is</strong>cussed poetry writ<strong>in</strong>g with our IB Diploma students.<br />

All <strong>in</strong> all, <strong>Book</strong> <strong>Week</strong> has proven to be a lot <strong>of</strong> fun and I am sure has produced many<br />

new bookworms.<br />

<strong>Book</strong> <strong>Week</strong> – Secondary<br />

The Engl<strong>is</strong>h department <strong>is</strong> pleased to report that th<strong>is</strong> <strong>year</strong>’s <strong>Book</strong> <strong>Week</strong> was a great success <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Secondary<br />

section at Uplands. Highlights <strong>in</strong>cluded a much-improved turnout from Secondary <strong>in</strong> response<br />

to <strong>the</strong> traditional costume parade, with many <strong>in</strong>dividuals creat<strong>in</strong>g eye-catch<strong>in</strong>g outfits to celebrate characters<br />

from <strong>the</strong>ir favourite literary works. It was great to see such a positive response – and a pleasure to<br />

spend <strong>the</strong> first part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g mix<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> enthusiastic Primary students and teachers!<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r <strong>events</strong> <strong>in</strong>cluded a number <strong>of</strong> poetry read<strong>in</strong>g sessions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> library (with students and teachers<br />

read<strong>in</strong>g a variety <strong>of</strong> publ<strong>is</strong>hed and personal writ<strong>in</strong>g), <strong>the</strong> v<strong>is</strong>it <strong>of</strong> Malaysian poet, Cecil Rajendra, and a<br />

range <strong>of</strong> competitions that <strong>in</strong>vited students to present responses to literature <strong>in</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> ways. The<br />

results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se competitions are l<strong>is</strong>ted below:<br />
