Book Week is one of Uplands’ important events in the School year. Its primary aim
is to encourage more reading among the student community. This year it ran from
Monday 9th of Feb to Friday 13th Feb, beginning with a whole School assembly
where students performed funny sketches and played guessing games of book titles
with the audience. Some even sang to entertain their fellow students and read poetry
to encourage them to read more.
As the week progressed, other activities were organized such as a Book Swap where
parents and children brought in books they do not read anymore to exchange, a door
decorating competition, a photography competition called ‘Get Caught Reading’
where photos of students and teachers reading in odd locations are submitted. One
of the highlights of the week was the storybook character costume parade where students
from each year came to School dressed as a character out their favorite book.
Coinciding with Book Week, Uplands was honoured by a visit by Malaysian Nobel
nominated poet and recipient of the Malaysian Lifetime Humanitarian Award, Mr.
Cecil Rajendra who read and discussed poetry writing with our IB Diploma students.
All in all, Book Week has proven to be a lot of fun and I am sure has produced many
new bookworms.

Book Week – Secondary
The English department is pleased to report that this year’s Book Week was a great success in the Secondary
section at Uplands. Highlights included a much-improved turnout from Secondary in response
to the traditional costume parade, with many individuals creating eye-catching outfits to celebrate characters
from their favourite literary works. It was great to see such a positive response – and a pleasure to
spend the first part of the morning mixing with the enthusiastic Primary students and teachers!
Other events included a number of poetry reading sessions in the library (with students and teachers
reading a variety of published and personal writing), the visit of Malaysian poet, Cecil Rajendra, and a
range of competitions that invited students to present responses to literature in a number of ways. The
results of these competitions are listed below:
