4.2 Appearance Based <strong>Face</strong> <strong>Recognition</strong><br />
Before doing a comparison <strong>of</strong> visual <strong>and</strong> thermal images, we evaluated <strong>Face</strong>It®<br />
identification s<strong>of</strong>tware, which uses still images, <strong>and</strong> <strong>Face</strong>It® surveillance, which uses real<br />
time video images, to check the robustness <strong>of</strong> current, best face recognition system<br />
[57][58]. <strong>Face</strong>It® is based on the local feature analysis (LFA) algorithm [14] <strong>and</strong><br />
represents facial images in terms <strong>of</strong> local features derived statistically from a<br />
representative ensemble <strong>of</strong> faces. Figure 26 shows the <strong>Face</strong>It® s<strong>of</strong>tware templates which<br />
utilizing the following steps. First, the gallery database, which includes faces images,<br />
should be created (a). Then, subject images, which we want to identify, should be chosen<br />
(b). Finally, after aligning the subject image <strong>and</strong> then clicking the search button, the<br />
results can be seen according to the confidence rate (c).<br />

In the identification experiment, we mainly focused on several facial image<br />
variations such as expression, illumination, age, pose, <strong>and</strong> face size which are the main<br />
