Dr. HELEN F. GILES-GEE (center) walks with Board Chairman MARVIN SAMSON and Presidential<br />
Search Committee Chair KATHLEEN MAYES P’76, PharmD’78.
From <strong>the</strong> Chairman<br />
Serv<strong>in</strong>g as your <strong>in</strong>terim president this past year has been a<br />
remarkable experience for me. As a trustee for over 20<br />
years, I have always been aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> outstand<strong>in</strong>g academic<br />
credentials and accomplishments <strong>of</strong> our students, as well<br />
as <strong>of</strong> your successes after graduation. However, over <strong>the</strong><br />
past twelve months, I have ga<strong>in</strong>ed a new perspective.<br />
Hav<strong>in</strong>g direct <strong>in</strong>teractions with students has given me keen<br />
<strong>in</strong>sight as to how outstand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>y really are and how<br />
seriously <strong>the</strong>y approach <strong>the</strong>ir studies. When I have asked<br />
students what we can do to make <strong>the</strong>ir college experience<br />
better, <strong>the</strong>y have not asked for anyth<strong>in</strong>g frivolous. They<br />
requested th<strong>in</strong>gs to improve <strong>the</strong>ir ability to learn, for example, more quiet study space. This<br />
attitude is <strong>in</strong>dicative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> exceptional caliber <strong>of</strong> students at <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong>.<br />
In my role, I also had <strong>the</strong> opportunity to see, firsthand, <strong>the</strong> dedication and commitment <strong>of</strong><br />
our faculty and staff, without whose support, and <strong>the</strong> services <strong>the</strong>y provide to our students<br />
and alumni on a daily basis, my job as <strong>in</strong>terim president would have been extremely difficult.<br />
When I look back on <strong>the</strong> past year, I know <strong>the</strong> experiences and <strong>in</strong>teractions I have had will<br />
make me a much better chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong> trustees.<br />
As I turn <strong>the</strong> re<strong>in</strong>s over to our new president, Dr. Helen Giles-Gee, I do so with <strong>the</strong> certa<strong>in</strong><br />
knowledge that she is <strong>the</strong> right person to lead and guide this <strong>University</strong> through <strong>the</strong> array<br />
<strong>of</strong> opportunities and challenges we face <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> higher education and healthcare arenas.<br />
Our <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> community looked forward to Dr. Giles-Gee’s arrival <strong>in</strong> July, as evidenced by<br />
<strong>the</strong> enthusiastic reception she received when she was <strong>in</strong>troduced as <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s<br />
22nd president <strong>in</strong> March. We are all excited about <strong>the</strong> benefits we will derive from <strong>the</strong> wealth<br />
<strong>of</strong> wisdom and experience she has gleaned from more than 30 years <strong>in</strong> higher education.<br />
And we are especially pleased to have her lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r development and implementation<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s strategic plan, which lays <strong>the</strong> foundation for <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong>’ future.<br />
There is much to look forward to <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g weeks and months, and we approach <strong>the</strong><br />
future with great optimism.<br />
Thank you aga<strong>in</strong> for <strong>the</strong> privilege <strong>of</strong> serv<strong>in</strong>g this great <strong>University</strong>.<br />

It was quite a homecom<strong>in</strong>g for Dr. HELEN F. GILES-GEE.<br />
A stand<strong>in</strong>g-room-only crowd at <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong>’ McNeil Science<br />
and Technology Center was packed with <strong>University</strong> faculty,<br />
staff, and students, as well as honored guests, to welcome<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s 22nd president on March 23, 2012.<br />
Dr. Giles-Gee, who had served as president at Keene State<br />
College <strong>in</strong> Keene, New Hampshire, s<strong>in</strong>ce 2005, spent quite<br />
a bit <strong>of</strong> time <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Delaware Valley, first as a student at<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania for her undergraduate, master’s,<br />
and doctoral degrees and <strong>the</strong>n later as provost at Rowan<br />
<strong>University</strong>. And her connection to <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> is even closer<br />
as she took pre-graduate classes at one po<strong>in</strong>t from <strong>the</strong>n-<br />
<strong>Philadelphia</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy and Science.<br />
“I look forward to work<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

The Class <strong>of</strong> 2012<br />
Meet five impressive graduates from <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> 2012<br />
by Brian Kirschner<br />
Elizabeth Schlatter BI’12, Morrisville, Pa.<br />
“I found my niche <strong>in</strong> forensic<br />
sciences and have had a ton<br />
<strong>of</strong> opportunities to fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />
my education and experience<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field.”<br />
- Elizabeth Schlatter BI’12<br />
Fans <strong>of</strong> TV shows like CSI, NCIS, and<br />
Law and Order see forensic scientists as<br />
jacks-<strong>of</strong>-all-trades who can solve <strong>the</strong><br />
crime <strong>in</strong> an hour or less. In reality,<br />
forensic scientists are specialized experts<br />
who focus on one particular aspect <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> crime scene, and results can take<br />
weeks or months to get.<br />
ELIZABETH SCHLATTER, who was<br />
drawn to <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> orig<strong>in</strong>ally to pursue<br />
medical school, was look<strong>in</strong>g for a challenge<br />
and got hooked on forensic science.<br />
“I found my niche <strong>in</strong> forensic sciences<br />
and have had a ton <strong>of</strong> opportunities to<br />
fur<strong>the</strong>r my education and experience <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> field,” she said. “The job post<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
I’ve come across are look<strong>in</strong>g for<br />
biologists or chemists, not a forensic<br />
science degree.”<br />
Armed with a BS <strong>in</strong> biology and classes<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> forensic science program, Schlatter<br />
has plans to cont<strong>in</strong>ue her education <strong>in</strong> a<br />
master’s program with a concentration<br />
<strong>in</strong> molecular biology. It would be <strong>the</strong><br />
foundation for <strong>the</strong> career she envisions<br />
<strong>in</strong> a forensic laboratory as a DNA<br />
analyst or toxicologist.<br />
“Hopefully, <strong>in</strong> five or 10 years, I’ll be<br />
done with grad school, work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a<br />
lab, and maybe even testify<strong>in</strong>g as an<br />
expert witness,” she said.
The Class <strong>of</strong> 2012 (cont.)<br />
Hanna T. Hyon MOT’12 (m<strong>in</strong>or <strong>in</strong> psychology), Cherry Hill, N.J.<br />
Not long after she picked up her<br />
<strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> diploma, HANNA HYON<br />
was pack<strong>in</strong>g her bags for a 10-month<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternship to South Korea’s Far East<br />
<strong>University</strong> as a Fulbright Student Scholar.<br />
The prestigious award will cont<strong>in</strong>ue her<br />
research on a cultural comparison <strong>of</strong><br />
assistive technology provision and use<br />
between our two countries.<br />
Needless to say it is quite an honor for<br />
Hyon who will have <strong>the</strong> opportunity<br />
to also reconnect with her ethnic roots.<br />
Certa<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> opportunity would not have<br />
been possible without her OT tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />
“I have to say that my favorite course<br />
was neuroscience with Dr. ROGER<br />
IDEISHI,” she said. “Neuroscience was<br />
followed by a series <strong>of</strong> amaz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternships,<br />
<strong>in</strong>trigu<strong>in</strong>g classes, and <strong>the</strong> opportunity<br />
to meet with respected OTs who<br />
are extremely <strong>in</strong>vested <strong>in</strong> our pr<strong>of</strong>ession.”<br />
Hyon looks forward to becom<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
seasoned practitioner with a background<br />
<strong>in</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ical research. She sees herself<br />
eventually end<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>in</strong> academia so that<br />
she “can jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> movement that <strong>in</strong>spires<br />
and educates <strong>the</strong> OTs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> future.”<br />
“[My] neuroscience [course] was followed by a series <strong>of</strong> amaz<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternships, <strong>in</strong>trigu<strong>in</strong>g classes, and <strong>the</strong> opportunity to meet with<br />
respected OTs who are extremely <strong>in</strong>vested <strong>in</strong> our pr<strong>of</strong>ession.”<br />
Hanna T. Hyon MOT’12<br />
Amir Forouzan MBA’12, Hunt<strong>in</strong>gdon Valley, Pa.<br />
“I had <strong>the</strong> opportunity to learn<br />
from faculty who have worked<br />
or are work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
<strong>in</strong> various capacities.”<br />
Amir Forouzan MBA’12<br />
Before return<strong>in</strong>g to school, AMIR<br />
FOROUZAN was a project director at a<br />
medical market research outfit <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Philadelphia</strong> suburbs, where he specialized<br />
<strong>in</strong> qualitative market research. Comb<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
with his previous degree <strong>in</strong> philosophy<br />
with an English concentration, Forouzan<br />
had a different outlook than his classmates.<br />
“I th<strong>in</strong>k my prior humanities background<br />
gave me a different perspective and thought<br />
process on approach<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess topics,”<br />
Forouzan said. “But what left an <strong>in</strong>delible<br />
mark for me was learn<strong>in</strong>g from faculty <strong>in</strong><br />
both approaches and styles <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>struct<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
I had <strong>the</strong> opportunity to learn from<br />
faculty who have worked or are work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> various capacities.”<br />
Not surpris<strong>in</strong>gly that faculty expertise is<br />
what attracted Forouzan to <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first place.<br />
Forouzan po<strong>in</strong>ts to his MBA capstone<br />
project, titled “Milk<strong>in</strong>g a Cash Cow: The<br />
Effects <strong>of</strong> Pediatric Exclusivity as Outl<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
under <strong>the</strong> Best Pharmaceuticals for<br />
Children Act,” as his biggest accomplishment<br />
<strong>in</strong> school. It allowed him not only to<br />
work <strong>in</strong>dependently, but also to amalgamate<br />
his prior background with <strong>the</strong><br />
knowledge he had accrued throughout<br />
<strong>the</strong> MBA program.<br />
He advises current and future students to<br />
“be will<strong>in</strong>g to work on presentation skills,<br />
to be prepared, and to approach every<br />
situation with <strong>the</strong> seriousness <strong>of</strong> a<br />
workplace <strong>in</strong>teraction.”
THE BULLETIN: THE CLASS OF 2012 PAGE 7<br />
Anita Sharma PharmD’12, York, Pa.<br />
Grow<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>in</strong> a small town, ANITA<br />
SHARMA was drawn to <strong>the</strong> urban environment<br />
<strong>of</strong> PCP and <strong>the</strong> various connections<br />
that PCP had with o<strong>the</strong>r healthcare<br />
sites. What she did not realize at <strong>the</strong> time<br />
was that she would f<strong>in</strong>d her call<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
“I always knew that I wanted to<br />
help people get <strong>the</strong> most out <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir medications,” she said. After<br />
graduation she moved on to an<br />
ambulatory care residency at The<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> M<strong>in</strong>nesota. “I can<br />
picture what I want to do—tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
care <strong>of</strong> patients and mak<strong>in</strong>g sure that<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> most out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
medications. It is a simple concept.”<br />
Perhaps more importantly, through her<br />
exposure to <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession through<br />
PCP, Sharma understands that as <strong>the</strong><br />
pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> pharmacy evolves, it is <strong>in</strong><br />
need <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals who can provide<br />
leadership <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> direct delivery <strong>of</strong><br />
pharmaceutical care to patients, expansion<br />
<strong>of</strong> pharmaceutical care practices,<br />
development <strong>of</strong> reimbursement models<br />
for pharmaceutical care, and practicebased<br />
research <strong>in</strong> pharmaceutical care,<br />
as well as provide effective education <strong>in</strong><br />
pharmaceutical care to pharmacy students<br />
and practitioners.<br />
“Remember, our job as pharmacists<br />
will always revolve around patient<br />
care,” she said.<br />
“I always knew that I wanted to<br />
help people get <strong>the</strong> most out <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir medications.”<br />
Anita Sharma PharmD’12<br />
Daniel Hagaman C’09, MS’12 (chemistry), Hammonton N.J.<br />
“Whe<strong>the</strong>r it is for <strong>the</strong> next<br />
stage <strong>of</strong> your career or for your<br />
research project, be prepared.”<br />
Daniel Hagaman C’09, MS’12<br />
DANIEL HAGAMAN did not have to<br />
worry about relocat<strong>in</strong>g after he earned<br />
his BS <strong>in</strong> chemistry <strong>in</strong> 2009; he decided<br />
to stay right here at <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> to<br />
work with his research advisor Dr.<br />
ALEXANDER SIDORENKO.<br />
“All <strong>of</strong> my abilities as a scientist I owe to<br />
Dr. Sidorenko,” Hagaman said proudly.<br />
He po<strong>in</strong>ted to <strong>the</strong> ability to present his<br />
research around <strong>the</strong> country at national<br />
meet<strong>in</strong>gs and his tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> perform<strong>in</strong>g<br />
cutt<strong>in</strong>g-edge research at <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong><br />
that will allow him to transition <strong>in</strong>to<br />
any lab or group as <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> his<br />
education that has <strong>the</strong> most impact.<br />
“I am really proud <strong>of</strong> my publications<br />
<strong>in</strong> scientific journals. After all <strong>of</strong> your<br />
hard work, it is really nice to see your<br />
work published,” he said.<br />
His master <strong>of</strong> science degree is just<br />
ano<strong>the</strong>r step for Hagaman, who has<br />
set his sights on a PhD—though likely<br />
at ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stitution—and a future <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry or academia.<br />
He advises fellow students to have a<br />
plan at all times: “Whe<strong>the</strong>r it is for <strong>the</strong><br />
next stage <strong>of</strong> your career or for your<br />
research project, be prepared.”

Personalized Medic<strong>in</strong>e and Targeted<br />

Kimmel, MD, MSCE; Michael<br />
Christman, PhD; and <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong>’<br />
AMALIA M. ISSA, PhD, MPH, who<br />
serves not only as director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Program <strong>in</strong> Personalized Medic<strong>in</strong>e and<br />
Targeted Therapeutics as well as chair<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Health Policy and<br />
Public Health, <strong>in</strong>dividually addressed<br />
different aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field. They<br />
<strong>the</strong>n took nearly an hour <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tense<br />
question<strong>in</strong>g from attendees.<br />
The National Institutes <strong>of</strong> Health def<strong>in</strong>es<br />
“personalized medic<strong>in</strong>e” as <strong>the</strong> “emerg<strong>in</strong>g<br />
practice <strong>of</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e that uses an <strong>in</strong>dividual’s<br />
genetic pr<strong>of</strong>ile to guide decisions<br />
made with regard to <strong>the</strong> prevention, diagnosis,<br />
and treatment <strong>of</strong> disease.”<br />
Or, “<strong>the</strong> right medic<strong>in</strong>e for <strong>the</strong> right<br />
person at <strong>the</strong> right time,” stated<br />
Dr. Kimmel, a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> both<br />
medic<strong>in</strong>e and epidemiology at <strong>the</strong><br />
Perelman School <strong>of</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e at <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania. “It’s <strong>the</strong><br />
most appropriate <strong>the</strong>rapy to <strong>the</strong> most<br />
appropriate patient.”<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> human genome was first<br />
mapped <strong>in</strong> 2001, it’s been determ<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
that humans are more or less 99.6<br />
percent similar. It’s that 0.4 percent that<br />
makes us unique and determ<strong>in</strong>es height<br />
and aspects <strong>of</strong> our personality, along<br />
with <strong>the</strong> likelihood <strong>of</strong> gett<strong>in</strong>g breast<br />
cancer or <strong>the</strong> likelihood <strong>of</strong> respond<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to a drug, said Dr. Christman,<br />
president and CEO <strong>of</strong> Coriell Institute<br />
for Medical Research.<br />
In only 13 years <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tense study,<br />
knowledge has <strong>in</strong>creased dramatically,<br />
but researchers are still wrapp<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir arms around what exactly this<br />
knowledge can be used for. Progress<br />
has been slow but promis<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
accord<strong>in</strong>g to Dr. Kimmel.<br />
“Scientific progress doesn’t move all<br />
that fast. But genetics still has great<br />
potential to improve health,” said Dr.<br />
Kimmel. “I th<strong>in</strong>k it’s go<strong>in</strong>g to take<br />
time—some <strong>in</strong>novation and new ways<br />
<strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, carefully done studies,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g randomized trials—but more<br />
<strong>of</strong>ten than we are do<strong>in</strong>g now. And a lot<br />
<strong>of</strong> patience. It’s progress and promise,<br />
not hype and disappo<strong>in</strong>tment.<br />
“We’re not quite to <strong>the</strong><br />
po<strong>in</strong>t where we can go<br />
to a pharmacist and hand<br />

for a prescription.”<br />

“It’s progress and promise,<br />
not hype and disappo<strong>in</strong>tment.”<br />
- Dr. Stephen Kimmel<br />
“I th<strong>in</strong>k we need to make a really<br />
concerted effort to test and study <strong>the</strong><br />
effects <strong>of</strong> genetics. We’re not quite<br />
to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t where we can go to a<br />
pharmacist and hand <strong>the</strong>m our DNA<br />
sequence for a prescription.”<br />
But it might be close.<br />
“What’s happened is really stagger<strong>in</strong>g,”<br />
Dr. Christman said. “[The] cost to<br />
[map genes] has really come down.<br />
And it will have pr<strong>of</strong>ound implications<br />
cl<strong>in</strong>ically. This <strong>in</strong>formation is go<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
be mak<strong>in</strong>g its way <strong>in</strong>to a cl<strong>in</strong>ical sett<strong>in</strong>g<br />
very soon whe<strong>the</strong>r we’re ready or not.<br />
It’s a great time to be a pharmacist<br />
because <strong>the</strong>ir importance to <strong>the</strong><br />
healthcare system is about to explode.<br />
The earliest utility <strong>of</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g personal<br />
genetic <strong>in</strong>formation is go<strong>in</strong>g to be <strong>in</strong><br />
mak<strong>in</strong>g decisions about drug dos<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />
A nationally and <strong>in</strong>ternationally<br />
recognized expert <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong><br />
personalized medic<strong>in</strong>e, Dr. Issa<br />
discussed <strong>the</strong> public health and policy<br />
challenges presented by grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
consumer and <strong>in</strong>surance company<br />
engagement.<br />
“What needs to happen is <strong>the</strong><br />
development <strong>of</strong> evidentiary standards<br />
if [personalized medic<strong>in</strong>e] is go<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
become a part <strong>of</strong> standard practice,”<br />
said Dr. Issa, who founded <strong>the</strong> P 2 MT 2<br />
<strong>in</strong> 2001 as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first centers<br />
focused on pharmacogenomics and<br />
personalized medic<strong>in</strong>e. She jo<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>in</strong> 2011 and brought<br />
P 2 MT 2 with her.<br />
Through <strong>the</strong> program, Dr. Issa and a<br />
team <strong>of</strong> scientists and researchers are<br />
actively engaged <strong>in</strong> research aimed at<br />
<strong>the</strong> effective translation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> science<br />
<strong>of</strong> pharmacogenomics and personalized<br />
medic<strong>in</strong>e from <strong>the</strong> laboratory bench<br />
to <strong>the</strong> bedside and to <strong>the</strong> community<br />
and policy. Dr. Issa has developed a<br />
unique area <strong>of</strong> translational research<br />
focused on pharmacogenomics and<br />
personalized medic<strong>in</strong>e applications<br />
and how <strong>the</strong>y will be translated and<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong>to healthcare delivery and<br />
health systems.<br />
Aside from evidentiary standards,<br />
just simple general knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />
personalized medic<strong>in</strong>e will help it<br />
become standard practice. Accelerat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
“Scientific progress<br />
doesn’t move all that<br />
fast. But genetics still<br />
has great potential to<br />
improve health.”<br />
- Stephen Kimmel, MD, MSCE<br />
this knowledge, <strong>in</strong> addition to<br />
develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> evidence base for and<br />
promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formed decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
about personalized medic<strong>in</strong>e to create<br />
mean<strong>in</strong>gful health outcomes, is <strong>the</strong><br />
mission <strong>of</strong> Dr. Issa’s P 2 MT 2 .<br />
“In exchange for a few drops <strong>of</strong><br />
blood or saliva, patients are now able<br />
to obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation based upon<br />
variations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir DNA sequences that<br />
will one day help <strong>the</strong>m benefit from<br />
<strong>the</strong> prescrib<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> more effectively<br />
tailored drugs and avoid some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
more serious side effects,” said Dr.<br />
Issa. “That is <strong>the</strong> tantaliz<strong>in</strong>g promise <strong>of</strong><br />
personalized medic<strong>in</strong>e.”

Far East <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> has forged an important relationship with Far East<br />

Thursday, May 17, 2012. Central to sign<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Memorandum <strong>of</strong><br />
Understand<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> an exchange program<br />

scientific, and cultural experience. As <strong>the</strong> program fortifies,<br />
<strong>the</strong> partnership will explore new opportunities, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g jo<strong>in</strong>t<br />
faculty and academic program development and <strong>the</strong> exchange<br />
<strong>of</strong> scientific materials and publications.<br />
As healthcare fields cont<strong>in</strong>ue to grow both nationally and<br />

be enough for pr<strong>of</strong>essionals whose goals are to move ahead<br />
<strong>in</strong> leadership or management roles. Ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a dual degree or<br />
a graduate pr<strong>of</strong>essional degree, such as <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong>’ master<br />
<strong>of</strong> public health (MPH,) provides a pathway to careers <strong>of</strong><br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals achieve that goal faster. Understand<strong>in</strong>g that<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>of</strong>essionals and students need flexibility, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>’ program consists <strong>of</strong> classes taken <strong>in</strong> eight-week<br />
blocks, and <strong>the</strong> asynchronous nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> program means<br />
that students can start <strong>the</strong> program at any one <strong>of</strong> six start<strong>in</strong>g<br />
po<strong>in</strong>ts throughout <strong>the</strong> year. Best <strong>of</strong> all, fulfillment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> program<br />
requirements can be accomplished <strong>in</strong> as little as two years. The<br />

Parents—<strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> Wants You to Get Involved<br />
Parents have always been a vital part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> community. But <strong>in</strong> order to better<br />
connect parents with <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, <strong>the</strong><br />
Alumni Office and Student Life are form<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> Parents Committee.<br />
The Parents Committee will aim to enhance<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s sense <strong>of</strong> community and<br />
<strong>the</strong> overall student experience. There<br />
are many current parents like Ron and<br />
Judy Cerm<strong>in</strong>aro who feel strongly about<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a connection with <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong>.<br />
“I th<strong>in</strong>k our <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> our daughter<br />
Nicolette’s <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> experience has had a<br />
positive effect on how she approaches her<br />
development,” said Ron and Judy. “There<br />
is excitement and pride <strong>in</strong> her when she<br />
<strong>in</strong>troduces us to pr<strong>of</strong>essors and classmates,<br />
expla<strong>in</strong>s new topics about which she is<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g, and demonstrates her command<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> community <strong>in</strong> which she is<br />
totally immersed.”<br />
Form<strong>in</strong>g now, <strong>the</strong> Parents Committee will<br />
be made up <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> faculty and staff<br />
members, parents/guardians, and alumni.<br />
Their <strong>in</strong>volvement will play a major role<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiatives, such as promot<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> annual Family Fall Fest and help<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Bank<strong>in</strong>g on Pharmacist-Patient Relationships<br />
By April Hall<br />
There are three places to which EMORY<br />
PARSONS P’66 strives to give back.<br />
He supports his church, <strong>the</strong> preparatory<br />
school he attended as a young man, and<br />
<strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong>, all <strong>in</strong>tegral parts <strong>of</strong> his life.<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce graduat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> <strong>in</strong> 1966, Parsons<br />
has developed a legacy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mercersburg, Pa.,<br />
area. He owns three “country” pharmacies,<br />
is a major shareholder <strong>in</strong> a cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> seven<br />
community banks, and has served as a pharmacist<br />
on missionary trips to South America.<br />
His latest commitment to <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> is as<br />
a charter member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Griffith Leadership<br />
Society. Last year, when a Phonathon<br />
student called him, Parsons doubled his<br />
usual annual gift and became a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
school’s newest alumni group.<br />
“I’m k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> at a stage <strong>of</strong> my life when I<br />
want to give back to <strong>the</strong> places that gave to<br />
me and helped me along <strong>the</strong> way,” he said.<br />
“PCP prepared me very, very, very well <strong>in</strong><br />
pharmacy. It also tra<strong>in</strong>ed me <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
management and <strong>the</strong> communication skills<br />
that are very important.”<br />
Parsons is proud <strong>of</strong> his pharmacies and<br />
<strong>the</strong> services <strong>the</strong>y provide and credits<br />
<strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> with provid<strong>in</strong>g more than<br />
technical knowledge.<br />
“People get more than <strong>the</strong>ir medic<strong>in</strong>es<br />
when <strong>the</strong>y come to my pharmacy; <strong>the</strong>y<br />
get me,” he said. “I can be <strong>in</strong>volved with<br />
<strong>the</strong> patients more completely. I have three<br />
stores full <strong>of</strong> patient relationships.”<br />
He sees his work as a pharmacist as <strong>the</strong><br />
role that’s facilitated <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> his life.<br />
Most recently he went to Ecuador with<br />
a handful <strong>of</strong> doctors, dentists, and<br />
nurses, where, Parsons said, he filled<br />
2,200 prescriptions <strong>in</strong> five days to help<br />
a medically-underserved population.<br />

Opportunity<br />
You’ve worked hard and saved diligently to<br />
provide for your retirement, and you’re not<br />
alone. Last year, $17.5 trillion was <strong>in</strong>vested<br />
<strong>in</strong> retirement market assets, and more than<br />
70 percent <strong>of</strong> households took advantage <strong>of</strong><br />
tax-advantaged retirement sav<strong>in</strong>gs options<br />
such as <strong>in</strong>dividual retirement accounts (IRAs)<br />
and def<strong>in</strong>ed contribution plans such as 401(k),<br />
403(b), and 457 plans.* Even dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
economic downturns, retirement accounts<br />
rema<strong>in</strong> a primary vehicle through which<br />
Americans save and <strong>in</strong>vest. These assets<br />
not only secure your future; <strong>the</strong>y are also an<br />
important part <strong>of</strong> your overall estate plan.<br />
Your family, however, may not fully benefit.<br />
If you name an <strong>in</strong>dividual o<strong>the</strong>r than your<br />
spouse, such as a child, as <strong>the</strong> beneficiary <strong>of</strong><br />
your traditional IRA, <strong>the</strong> plan assets can be<br />
subject to up to four different taxes:<br />
Federal estate tax: Under current law, if you<br />
pass away with an estate <strong>in</strong> excess <strong>of</strong> $5<br />
million, <strong>the</strong> balance <strong>of</strong> your traditional IRA<br />
will be <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> your estate for federal<br />
estate tax purposes. Although that sounds<br />
like a high threshold, when you <strong>in</strong>clude your<br />
house, sav<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong>vestments, life <strong>in</strong>surance,<br />
and o<strong>the</strong>r assets, it is far more atta<strong>in</strong>able for<br />
far more people than you might imag<strong>in</strong>e. If<br />
your IRA is <strong>in</strong>cludable <strong>in</strong> your estate, <strong>the</strong><br />
balance available after taxes could be lessened<br />
by 35 percent or more. (Assets left to your<br />
spouse are generally not subject to estate<br />
tax, but once that spouse passes away, <strong>the</strong><br />
estate tax issue will aga<strong>in</strong> become relevant.)<br />
Federal <strong>in</strong>come tax: An IRA can produce<br />
<strong>in</strong>come known as “<strong>in</strong>come <strong>in</strong> respect <strong>of</strong> a<br />
decedent.” This means that withdrawals<br />
from your IRA by your estate or heirs will<br />
be taxed as ord<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>come, with rates that<br />
could hit 35 percent.<br />
State <strong>in</strong>come and estate taxes: Additionally,<br />
<strong>the</strong> IRA balance may be subject to both<br />
state <strong>in</strong>come and state estate tax depend<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on where you live.<br />
There is a better way. When you name a<br />
charitable organization, such as <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>, as a beneficiary <strong>of</strong> your IRA,<br />
<strong>the</strong> charity will receive 100 percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
proceeds tax-free. The IRA balance will be<br />
subject to none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> taxes discussed above.<br />
You can thus make a significant impact on <strong>the</strong><br />
life and programs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> without<br />
impos<strong>in</strong>g any negative tax consequences<br />
upon your heirs.<br />
It’s not a question <strong>of</strong> leav<strong>in</strong>g assets to your<br />
children or charity—you can provide for<br />
both, while leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> tax collectors out<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cold. With careful plann<strong>in</strong>g, you can<br />
bequeath o<strong>the</strong>r assets—such as common<br />
stocks, mutual fund shares held <strong>in</strong> taxable<br />
accounts, real estate, bus<strong>in</strong>ess ownership<br />
<strong>in</strong>terests, or o<strong>the</strong>rs that would qualify for<br />
capital ga<strong>in</strong>s treatment if sold.<br />
You can pass a legacy <strong>of</strong> thrift to your heirs<br />
and a legacy <strong>of</strong> opportunity to <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong><br />
students, even designat<strong>in</strong>g which college,<br />
program, or activity your assets will propel<br />
ever forward.<br />
If you have named <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> as a beneficiary<br />
<strong>of</strong> your retirement plan but have not yet<br />
<strong>in</strong>formed <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, or if you wish to<br />
become a member <strong>of</strong> The Rem<strong>in</strong>gton Society<br />
by <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> as a beneficiary,<br />

CARRIE COLLINS, JD, <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong>’<br />
new vice president <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutional<br />

one pr<strong>in</strong>ciple: donor-centric, missionbased<br />

misconceptions about <strong>in</strong>stitutional<br />

people believe IA pr<strong>of</strong>essionals only<br />
want to talk to alumni when <strong>the</strong>y want<br />
money, but that’s not true. I want to be<br />
focused on <strong>the</strong> donors, match<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

to be <strong>in</strong>volved.”<br />
After practic<strong>in</strong>g law for several years,<br />
with a focus on estate plann<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
corporate law, Coll<strong>in</strong>s decided to get<br />
out <strong>of</strong> private practice. The opportunity<br />
to work <strong>in</strong> development came through<br />

Donor centricity proved successful for<br />
Coll<strong>in</strong>s at Duquesne <strong>University</strong>—where<br />
she was <strong>the</strong> executive director <strong>of</strong> gift<br />
plann<strong>in</strong>g and stewardship—not just<br />
<strong>in</strong> rais<strong>in</strong>g funds for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitution<br />
but also <strong>in</strong> successfully engag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
alumni as active participants <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
university’s culture. Coll<strong>in</strong>s believes<br />
donor centricity will work even better<br />
at <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong>, where, she said, “alumni<br />
are already connected to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitution<br />
and <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong>y were here.” Her<br />
goal will be listen<strong>in</strong>g as alumni express<br />
what <strong>the</strong>y want <strong>the</strong>ir legacy to be and<br />
<strong>the</strong>n f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g opportunities to br<strong>in</strong>g<br />
this to fruition as she connects <strong>the</strong>m to<br />
<strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong>’ future.<br />
Coll<strong>in</strong>s was<br />
attracted to<br />
<strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong> by<br />
<strong>the</strong> people she<br />
met, people<br />
like MARVIN<br />
SAMSON and<br />
WILLIAM<br />
ASHTON.<br />
“They brought<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitution at this excit<strong>in</strong>g time.”<br />
<strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong>’ hir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a new president—<br />
DR. HELEN GILES-GEE—makes<br />
this an even more strategic moment.<br />
“I want to be focused<br />
on <strong>the</strong> donors, match<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir passions with <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>stitution’s needs.”<br />
- CARRIE COLLINS, JD<br />
“The people <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> IA <strong>of</strong>fice,” said<br />
Coll<strong>in</strong>s, “are ano<strong>the</strong>r great group—<br />
enthusiastic, energetic, knowledgeable<br />
about <strong>the</strong>ir own areas <strong>of</strong> focus, and<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g well as a team.” She envisions<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice as a support system for<br />
alumni, help<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m f<strong>in</strong>d ways to be<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y have an hour a<br />
year or an hour a week. “And we want<br />
to be transparent. We want donors to<br />
know where <strong>the</strong>ir money is go<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
how it is used, f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g efficiencies <strong>in</strong><br />
operations wherever possible. It’s all<br />
part <strong>of</strong> donor centricity.”<br />
Coll<strong>in</strong>s is never far away from <strong>the</strong><br />
legal field, though. Her husband Matt<br />
is a litigator, and<br />
she says her sixyear-old<br />
daughter<br />
Vivian has already<br />
learned how to<br />
out-negotiate her.<br />
She also has a<br />
four-year-old son<br />
named Mitchell.<br />
Coll<strong>in</strong>s loves<br />
hang<strong>in</strong>g out with<br />
her family as <strong>the</strong>y start life <strong>in</strong> this new<br />
city—a place where <strong>the</strong>y have been<br />
“warmly welcomed,” just as she has<br />
been at <strong>U<strong>Sciences</strong></strong>.

100 Years and Count<strong>in</strong>g<br />
By April Hall<br />
MICHAEL BROWN P’83 started work<strong>in</strong>g at<br />
<strong>the</strong> family pharmacy as a teenager. He is<br />
now <strong>the</strong> president <strong>of</strong> Andrew Brown’s Drug<br />
Store, celebrat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess’s 100th<br />
anniversary this year.<br />
“We lived above <strong>the</strong> pharmacy,” Brown<br />
said. “I have n<strong>in</strong>e bro<strong>the</strong>rs and sisters—<br />
I’m one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> younger ones—and we all<br />
worked here at one time or ano<strong>the</strong>r.”<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce tak<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess from his<br />
fa<strong>the</strong>r, Brown has, with <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> his<br />
bro<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>in</strong>corporated and expanded <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />
build<strong>in</strong>g next door to <strong>the</strong> pharmacy where<br />
<strong>the</strong>y sell durable medical goods.<br />
Expand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>of</strong>fered its own<br />
challenges, Brown said, but diversify<strong>in</strong>g<br />
was one way to make a local neighborhood<br />
drug store viable.<br />
Ano<strong>the</strong>r way Brown hopes to make his pharmacy<br />
<strong>in</strong>dispensable is by <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> personal<br />
care faceless mail-order companies cannot.<br />
“I th<strong>in</strong>k more than anyth<strong>in</strong>g, more than<br />
cha<strong>in</strong> stores <strong>in</strong> every section <strong>of</strong> town, it is<br />
<strong>the</strong> mail order that has really taken over,”<br />
Brown said. “Be<strong>in</strong>g able to call and talk to<br />
<strong>the</strong> pharmacist about any questions people<br />
may have is important. It’s def<strong>in</strong>itely<br />
an elderly population here <strong>in</strong> Scranton,<br />
Lackawanna County, and <strong>the</strong>y’re not<br />
comfortable us<strong>in</strong>g mail order.”<br />
Brown’s pharmacy also <strong>of</strong>fers special services<br />
that <strong>in</strong>clude mak<strong>in</strong>g deliveries to local nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />
homes and fill<strong>in</strong>g clients’ pillboxes each<br />
week to avoid dosage confusion for <strong>the</strong> elderly.<br />
Look<strong>in</strong>g forward, Brown says he hopes<br />
Andrew Brown’s Drug Store will last ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
100 years. Whereas his sons are pursu<strong>in</strong>g<br />
careers <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r fields, two <strong>of</strong> Brown’s<br />
nephews are currently study<strong>in</strong>g pharmacy.<br />
Perhaps, <strong>the</strong>y will carry <strong>the</strong> torch <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />
next century.<br />

CARRIE JAMES PAGLIANO MPT’99 (DPT,<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> St. August<strong>in</strong>e for Health<br />
Science) has a bor<strong>in</strong>g story <strong>of</strong> why she<br />
went <strong>in</strong>to physical <strong>the</strong>rapy, or so she says.<br />
She was always <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> sports <strong>in</strong> high<br />
school and hoped to comb<strong>in</strong>e her love <strong>of</strong><br />
sports and <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e. That’s it;<br />
no story <strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>jury or battl<strong>in</strong>g back<br />
through pa<strong>in</strong>ful sessions <strong>of</strong> physical<br />
<strong>the</strong>rapy herself.<br />
But that’s not where her story ends. Now<br />
a mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> a 14-month-old son, she works<br />
part time at Medstar Georgetown <strong>University</strong><br />
Hospital <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C., and specializes<br />
<strong>in</strong> women with postpartum issues, from<br />
pelvic pa<strong>in</strong> and <strong>in</strong>cont<strong>in</strong>ence to low back pa<strong>in</strong>.<br />
Many women believe <strong>the</strong>se issues are <strong>the</strong><br />
price <strong>the</strong>y pay for hav<strong>in</strong>g babies, Dr. Pagliano<br />
said. “They th<strong>in</strong>k, ‘My mo<strong>the</strong>r was like this; my<br />

come to me after <strong>the</strong>y’re f<strong>in</strong>ished hav<strong>in</strong>g kids.<br />
It would help <strong>the</strong>m even more if <strong>the</strong>y came<br />
to see me even before hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir first child.”<br />
She said her studies at <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Sciences</strong> and <strong>the</strong>n later at <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
St. August<strong>in</strong>e for Health Science, where<br />
she earned a doctorate degree, began her<br />
education, but be<strong>in</strong>g pregnant herself put<br />
her over <strong>the</strong> top.<br />
“It’s one th<strong>in</strong>g when you learn all <strong>of</strong> this<br />
<strong>the</strong>oretically,” Dr. Pagliano said. “Once you<br />
have your own child, however, that’s <strong>the</strong><br />
most <strong>in</strong>valuable education I’ve ever had.”<br />
Dr. Pagliano said many <strong>of</strong> her patients<br />
(she also works with men recover<strong>in</strong>g from<br />
prostate surgery) come to see her through<br />
word <strong>of</strong> mouth as opposed to referrals<br />
directly from <strong>the</strong>ir doctors.<br />
But that may change as more <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
works its way <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stream, she said.<br />
Dr. Pagliano <strong>of</strong>ten talks with physical <strong>the</strong>rapy<br />
students, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those from <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>, who are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong><br />

A Family Legacy<br />
<strong>in</strong> Pharmacy<br />
By April Hall<br />
Over a more than 30-year period, <strong>the</strong><br />
Swantkowski family trusted <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> with <strong>the</strong>ir future.<br />
First, FLOYD P’31, and<br />
CHARLES SWANTKOWSKI<br />
P’31, attended <strong>the</strong> school<br />
and opened pharmacies<br />
<strong>in</strong> Duryea and Old<br />
Forge, Pennsylvania,<br />
respectively.<br />
“That’s what you did<br />
<strong>the</strong>n,” said CYNTHIA<br />
(SWANTKOWSKI) RIOS<br />
P’65, Floyd’s daughter. “You<br />
studied pharmacy and <strong>the</strong>n you went<br />
home and opened your own store.”<br />
Swantkowski Pharmacy was an<br />
established family bus<strong>in</strong>ess by <strong>the</strong><br />
time Cynthia entered high school.<br />
She worked at <strong>the</strong> store do<strong>in</strong>g odd<br />
jobs and runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> register.<br />
Cynthia decided to follow <strong>in</strong> her fa<strong>the</strong>r’s<br />
footsteps at <strong>Philadelphia</strong> College <strong>of</strong><br />
Pharmacy and Science.<br />
She also said <strong>the</strong>re weren’t too many<br />
women go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to pharmacy. Only 20<br />
women graduated with her <strong>in</strong> 1965.<br />
As Cynthia was pack<strong>in</strong>g up to go to PCPS,<br />
so was CARLOS RIOS P’65. Rios had<br />
also worked at a neighborhood pharmacy<br />
and said he was impressed by <strong>the</strong><br />
respect given to pharmacists. He decided<br />
to study pharmacy himself.<br />
Cynthia and Carlos met and fell <strong>in</strong> love<br />
at school. They moved to Duryea, and<br />
Carlos took over Floyd Swantkowski’s<br />
pharmacy while Cynthia worked <strong>in</strong><br />
hospital pharmacy.<br />
Meanwhile, Cynthia’s bro<strong>the</strong>r, ALAN<br />
SWANTKOWSKI P’68, was study<strong>in</strong>g<br />
pharmacy at <strong>the</strong>ir alma mater. He<br />
graduated <strong>in</strong> 1968 and came back to<br />
“That’s what you<br />
did <strong>the</strong>n. You studied<br />
pharmacy, and <strong>the</strong>n<br />
you went home and<br />
opened your own store.”<br />

RIOS P’65<br />
Duryea as well where he ran <strong>the</strong> store<br />
until <strong>the</strong> family sold it 15 years ago.<br />
The Rioses opened <strong>the</strong> Rios Pharmacy <strong>in</strong><br />
Morton. One pharmacy became three<br />
and a durable medical supply company,<br />
Rios Medical and Respiratory Products,<br />
with five locations <strong>in</strong> three states.<br />
About 25 years ago <strong>the</strong> couple sold <strong>the</strong><br />
durable medical goods company. In<br />
1999, <strong>the</strong> pharmacies were sold to CVS.<br />
Currently, Carlos is a partner <strong>in</strong><br />
Independent Pharmacy Buy<strong>in</strong>g Group,<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g with 148 <strong>in</strong>dependent pharmacies<br />
as a buy<strong>in</strong>g coalition. Cynthia has worked<br />
for 12 years as a volunteer pharmacist<br />
for Community Volunteers <strong>in</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
Though <strong>the</strong> couple doesn’t get back<br />
to campus <strong>of</strong>ten due to <strong>the</strong>ir busy<br />
schedules, Carlos said <strong>the</strong>y faithfully<br />
attend <strong>the</strong> annual d<strong>in</strong>ner-dance and<br />
headed up <strong>the</strong>ir 45th reunion <strong>in</strong> 2010.

Work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> conjunction with a team from <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania, Dr. Porter received a<br />
four-year grant from <strong>the</strong> National Institutes <strong>of</strong><br />
Health (NIH) on October 1, 2011, for <strong>the</strong> isolation,<br />
identification, and characterization <strong>of</strong> a tox<strong>in</strong> that<br />
can cause a syndrome similar to biliary atresia.<br />
The project started <strong>in</strong> 2007 when gastroenterologist<br />
Rebecca G. Wells, MD, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Perelman School <strong>of</strong><br />
Medic<strong>in</strong>e at <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania, wanted<br />
to read more about <strong>the</strong> 1964 and 1989 epidemics <strong>of</strong><br />
biliary atresia <strong>in</strong> Australian lambs, which were<br />
attributed to consumption <strong>of</strong> unusual plants by<br />
pregnant ewes dur<strong>in</strong>g severe droughts. Dr. Wells<br />

and her colleague Michael Pack, MD, also a gastroenterologist<br />
at <strong>the</strong> Perelman School <strong>of</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e, began<br />
study<strong>in</strong>g biliary atresia as members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fred and<br />
Suzanne Biesecker Center for Pediatric Liver Disease, at<br />
The Children’s Hospital <strong>of</strong> <strong>Philadelphia</strong>. To her<br />
surprise, Dr. Wells learned that <strong>the</strong>re had been a third<br />
biliary atresia epidemic <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Australian lambs <strong>in</strong> 2007.<br />
She was able to contact <strong>the</strong> Australian veter<strong>in</strong>arian<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved, Dr. Steve Whittaker, and learned that<br />
pigweed was believed to be <strong>the</strong> most likely culprit.<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce it would not be feasible to grow <strong>the</strong> plant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
United States, <strong>the</strong> U.S. group collaborated with Dr.<br />
Whittaker to provide a quantity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> plant for study.<br />
Dr. Porter and Dr. Kyung A. Koo, a postdoctoral<br />
researcher on <strong>the</strong> project, fractionated <strong>the</strong> plant <strong>in</strong>to<br />
multiple components, and Dr. Pack’s group identified<br />
<strong>the</strong> toxic fractions us<strong>in</strong>g a novel assay his lab devised<br />
to monitor bile flow and bile duct morphology <strong>in</strong><br />
larval zebrafish. Dr. Pack’s group uses <strong>the</strong> zebrafish to<br />
study <strong>the</strong> pathogenesis <strong>of</strong> heritable bile duct disorders;<br />
thus he was uniquely prepared to collaborate on <strong>the</strong><br />
pigweed project. Dr. Porter and his research team<br />
are now work<strong>in</strong>g to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> structure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
compounds responsible for <strong>the</strong> toxicity.<br />
“Understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> disease <strong>in</strong> humans<br />
is an ultimate goal,” said Dr. Porter.<br />
Once <strong>the</strong> structures are identified, he will be able to<br />
work with Dr. Wells and Dr. Pack to study <strong>the</strong> new<br />
zebrafish model <strong>of</strong> biliary atresia and develop o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
animal models <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> disease.<br />
“It’s not <strong>the</strong> highest <strong>in</strong>cidence disease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world,<br />
but it is one that is pretty devastat<strong>in</strong>g,” said Dr.<br />
Porter. Biliary atresia is <strong>the</strong> major reason for liver<br />
transplants <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pediatric population.
