Carlos del Ama Gutierrez (MSIA)<br />
just finished a book, Towards a New<br />
World Order. It analyzes the Islamic<br />
fundamentalism ideology, the<br />
“American Empire” and the developments<br />
in the European Union. It was<br />
published in Spanish in December.<br />
He is looking for an American publisher<br />
who would be interested in its<br />
translation and publication in English.<br />
1969<br />
Gordon Cohn (BS) is currently<br />
teaching accounting, economics and<br />
finance atTouro College and Baruch<br />
College. He has a PhD in accounting<br />
from Baruch College. He has published<br />
several articles on theTalmudic<br />
perspective on accounting and<br />
accounting ethics.<br />
Alan Hess (MSIA ’67, PhD) reports that<br />
the undergraduate finance students at<br />
the <strong>University</strong> of Washington voted him<br />
“Faculty of theYear” for the 2005 – 2006<br />
school year. A paper Alan coauthored<br />
on Japanese banks was presented at<br />
the Financial Intermediation Research<br />
Society conference in Shanghai in June.<br />
Later this fall, he will be presenting<br />
a paper on international banking<br />
at a joint Federal Reserve Bank of<br />
NewYork/Wharton/Review of Financial<br />
Studies conference at Wharton.<br />
James R. Holland, Jr. (MSIA),<br />
president and CEO of Unity Hunt Inc.<br />
in Dallas, has been inducted into the<br />
Oklahoma State <strong>University</strong> Hall of<br />
Fame for Engineering.<br />
Louis B. Mendelsohn (BS) is the<br />
president and CEO of Market<br />
Technologies, LLC, an Inc. 500 trading<br />
software company he founded in 1979.<br />
Louis is a world-renowned software<br />
developer in the application of personal<br />
computers to technical analysis of the<br />
financial markets. In 1983, he pioneered<br />
strategy back-testing for PCs and, in<br />
the mid-1980s, was the first to introduce<br />
intermarket analysis software. In the<br />
early 1990s, he released his latest<br />
program, VantagePoint Intermarket<br />
Analysis Software, which forecasts<br />
90 global markets, using artificial<br />
intelligence to find hidden patterns<br />
and relationships between them.<br />
In 2005, he expanded his analysis to<br />
encompass a new area that he calls<br />
Hurricaneomics Ș M which analyzes the<br />
impact that monster storms have on<br />
the global financial markets. Louis has<br />
authored two books on intermarket<br />
analysis, including his second, entitled<br />
Forex Trading Using Intermarket<br />
Analysis, which was published in 2006.<br />
His firm has received numerous awards<br />
throughout the years. Recently it was<br />
recognized as the 2006 Best Place<br />
to Work and as one of theTop 25<br />
High-Tech Companies inTampa Bay.<br />
MarketTechnologies recently relocated<br />
to a new state-of-the-art corporate<br />
headquarters that was designed<br />
with Hurricaneomics in mind.<br />
Louis, Illyce, his wife of thirty years, and<br />
youngest son, Lee, live on a ranch outsideTampa,<br />
Fla., where they raise Paso<br />
Fino horses and a variety of cattle and<br />
other livestock.<br />

Cheryl and Paul Schenk (BS)<br />
celebrated their 30th anniversary<br />
last fall with a trip to the Provence<br />
region of France. In November,<br />
Paul’s second book, The Hypnotic<br />
Use of Waking Dreams: Exploring<br />
Near-Death Experiences Without the<br />
Flatlines (Crown House Publishing),<br />
was published.<br />
RawleyThomas (MSIA) published a<br />
paper entitled “The Discounted Cash<br />
Flow Model: Using New Modeling to<br />
Test Reasonableness” with Randy<br />
Schostag in Valuation Strategies.This<br />
follows a presentation to the Midwest<br />
Finance Association on “Advanced<br />
DCF Valuation Measurement<br />
Methodology: Predictive Capability,<br />
Accuracy, and Robustness.”<br />

John Bassler (MSIA ’68, PhD) retired<br />
May 31, 2006 from his position as director<br />
of the Master’s Degree Program in<br />
Marketing Research atThe <strong>University</strong><br />
ofTexas at Arlington. Rather than head<br />
directly to the hammock (it’s too hot in<br />
Dallas to do that anyway), he has<br />
formed Know/Go NPD LLC with a<br />
partner, Jim Kindley.They are offering<br />
early-stage market feedback to<br />
new-product developers who have the<br />
humility to recognize that potential<br />
customers may not think their ideas<br />
are as good as they do.These insightful<br />
NPDers can save a lot of money by<br />
killing the non-starters early.<br />
1973<br />
Zane Swanson (MSIA) is associate<br />
professor for the Emporia State<br />
<strong>University</strong> and advisor to the<br />
university’s team entered in the 6th<br />
Global XBRL Academic Competition.<br />
XBRL, eXtensible Business Reporting<br />
Language, is a technology for improving<br />
access to the information in financial<br />
reports. Zane’s winning team presented<br />
a project using XBRL to do continuous<br />
auditing. “In general, what bar codes<br />
have done for retail packaging, XBRL<br />
will do for accounting,” said Zane.<br />

was awarded the William G. Chase<br />
Professor of Psychology at Florida<br />
State <strong>University</strong>.<br />
