Eastlands
Apprentice
Eastlands Homes is committed to providing
training and local labour opportunities.
We offer a number of ways
to increase employment
opportunities through
apprenticeships, volunteering,
work placements and working
with the Future Jobs Fund.
Currently we have seven
apprenticeships and the
individuals are working
hard to be successful in
their studies whilst gaining
practical experience with
Eastlands Homes.
We recruit people for
trainee, volunteer and work
experience positions. People
from all of our diverse
communities are encouraged
to apply so that our workforce
reflects the customers that
we serve.
Antony Oduntan started work
as an ICT apprentice:
“I started working at
Eastlands Homes in February
as an apprentice on the ICT
team. Before that I worked
for Arawak Walton Housing
Association employed
through the Future Jobs
Fund. My day-to-day job
largely includes providing
support to users who are
having any issues to do with
IT. I have enjoyed my time
here so far, this is mainly
down to the friendly and
welcoming people at each of
the offices. I am also studying
on an IT Practitioner’s course
as part of my apprenticeship.
The course I am studying will

Scheme
Antony Oduntan
last 2 – 3 years and I will be
working at Eastlands Homes
for the duration of the course.
Hopefully the combination of
study and practical working
will enable me to get a good
job in ICT in the future.”
Our Customer Involvement
Team has a range of
volunteers who we support
to develop new skills. We are
working with two schools
to offer work placements
which enable young people
to receive a taste of work life
as well as gaining invaluable
skills.
Recently, we have been
working with the Future
Jobs Fund to provide six
month work experience
opportunities for members of
the local communities. The
individuals bring key skills
to the organisation whilst
helping them to develop
different skills and increased
confidence and improve
their chances of future paid
employment.
All of our contractors are
expected to employ local
people and also take on local
aprentices.
Since starting our £150
million pound improvement
programme they have
employed over 20 apprentices,
many of which live within the
areas in which they work.
The apprentices get
actively involved with
the local communities,
giving something back as
well as making valuable
contributions to the industry.
The contractors who have
employed apprentices are:
• Baas Construction
• Casey’s
• Henry Boots
• Allten Windows
• Connaughts
• Safe and Sound
• Wrekin Windows
Keeping you safe
Operation Thunderflash was a week-long
initiative that saw Greater Manchester Police
blitz the streets of inner-city Manchester. Over
200 offenders that have caused distress and
disruption to this community were arrested.
Inspector Steve Palmer from the Longsight and
Ardwick Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Our
community have told us that they want police
in this area to tackle burglary, robbery, antisocial
behaviour and serious violent crime, so that is
exactly what we will do.
“Seeking out and arresting those people who live
among us and commit these terrible crimes is our
number one priority. I hope the heightened police
presence has not made any residents feel alarmed
or anxious; the activity we carry out is with the
sole intention of making this community a safer
place to live and work.
“Information passed on to us by the public plays
a vital role in helping us get these criminals off
the streets. Our Policing Pledge to the people of
Manchester states that we will listen to everything
you have to tell us and we will act on it.”
To help GMP identify any problems in your area
Getting the most out of your
rent payments
We work hard to make sure your rent
payments are spent on the right things and
that we always achieve value for money –
but we need your help.
We have set up a new Value for Money Customer
Panel to look at savings and reducing costs, as
well as improving the way we do things. The
group held their first meeting in May and will
continue to meet on the first Monday of each
month. There are still a few vacancies for any
interested customers, especially those living in
Longsight and Rusholme.
At the first meeting, the panel was given an
6
introduction to the issue of value for money and
how it can be applied to our services. Members
were asked to think about which issues were
most important to them and what needed to be
reviewed first. At the June meeting, members
developed an action plan for the panel.
If you want to take part in the Value for Money
Customer Panel, please contact Ashleigh Hogan
on 0161 274 2149.
Tenancy Cheats
Do you know someone who:
• Is subletting or renting
out their home without
permission
• Is not using their property as
their sole or principle home
• Has used false documents to
get a home
What can you do to help
We are working hard to track
down Tenancy Cheats and
ensure that homes are given to
people who really need them.
Your help in reporting tenancy
cheats is important because you
can see what is happening in
your neighbourhood.
• You might know that
someone has a home that
we don’t know about, or that
gave false information in their
housing application
• You might suspect someone
of subletting if you have seen
them collect rent from your
neighbours
• You might be suspicious
because the tenants of a
property keep changing
CALL 0800 028 9575 NOW!
*There is a national cash reward
scheme for information supplied
that leads to the recovery of a
property. This reward is £500 and
will cover the first 1,000 properties
nationally that are recovered.
If you prefer, you can provide
information anonymously.
However, if you would like to
be put forward for the £500
potential reward, we will need
your details. Please note that
these are for use only for the
tenancy fraud initiative and will
be kept confidential.
If you suspect someone is
a tenancy cheat, please let
us know. It could make a
big difference to people in
real need.
A new ‘view’ from Gorton
Money Matters
Saving Gateway
– what it is and who qualifies
From July 2010, there will be
a new government supported
cash saving scheme called the
'Saving Gateway'. It's for people
of working age who are on
lower incomes, and aims to help
kick-start a saving habit. The
government will add 50 pence
for each £1 saved into Saving
Gateway accounts.
How will the accounts work
If you are eligible for a Saving
Gateway account you will
automatically be sent a letter
of invitation, an information
booklet and a list of providers by
HM Revenue & Customs. You
will then be able to approach
an approved Saving Gateway
provider of your choice. This will
be sent if you are in receipt of
a qualifying benefit.
More information about the
Savings Gateway Account is
available from the Financial
Inclusion Officer at your local
housing office.
machines with a cash card
(this is usually free, but some
cash machines make a
charge);
• Withdraw money at the Post
Office ® and
• Pay your bills by direct debit
– meaning you could pay less
Some banks will also let you
pay by standing order.
Credit Union Current
accounts
Manchester Credit Union offer
savings and loan facilities as well
as basic bank accounts.
• The current accounts are ideal
if you need a bank account
that is easy to manage, and
won’t hit you with huge
hidden charges. There is
a £1.00 weekly charge for
holding the account.
• It may be that you’ve been
unable to open an account
due to poor credit, or low
income.
• You need to be member of
Manchester Credit Union with
a minimum of £5.00 in your
savings account to open an
account.
information or help to set up
an account please contact the
Spending too much on
your bills
Money can be saved on utility
bills by switching provider
according to individual needs.
Considering dual fuel is more
likely to save money for both gas
and electric.
If you think you are paying too
much on your utility bills you
can check various competitive
rates on different online
websites. Eastlands Homes do
not recommend any particular
company but some of the useful
ones can be found online are:
Money savings expert
- 0845 345 5708
Moneysupermarket.com
- 0845 345 1296
Uswitch.com - 0800 404 7961
Comparethemarket.com
Gocompare.com
The online service is very simple
to use. It can be searched by
using your post code. The
search will identify the energy
supplier’s appropriate tariffs for
the householders need. If you
have no access to internet you
can ring them directly for a quote
and they will find the appropriate
tariff for your need.

Tips and ideas on how to save
money and the environment
Save money on Gas and Electric
Some energy savings tips:
1. Switch Off Appliances:
(at the plug) that are not in
use and save approx £30 a
year. Remember not to leave
appliances on standby or on
charge unnecessarily.
2. Energy Saving Light
Bulbs: will last up to ten
times longer than an ordinary
standard light bulb. One
Energy Saving light bulb could
save you up to £3 a year, and
up to £6 for brighter bulbs.
3. Use Lids on Saucepans:
food will not only cook
quicker but will save money
on your cooking fuel.
4. Only Boil the Amount
of Water That You Need
when making a cup of tea.
5. Turn Your Thermostat
Down by 1°C could reduce
your fuel bill by 10%.
6. When Using Your
Washing Machine, always
wash with a full load or if
available use a half load
programme for smaller loads.
Wash your clothes at 30°C.
Hang out your
clothes to dry in
warm weather.
7. Close the
Curtains at
dusk to stop heat
escaping through
the windows.
Insulate hot pipes
to keep hot water hot.
Saving energy means spending
less towards bills and saves
money for others house hold
expenses.
You Choose
Youth Forum members regularly
attend an event organised by
Greater Manchester Police
Authority called ‘You Choose’.
The event concentrates on
issues that affect young people,
the topics this year were:
■ Domestic Violence
■ Sexual Assault
■ Stop and Search
The workshops raise awareness
about the topic and give young
people practical information and
advice about what they should
do if they find themselves in any
of these situations.
The next ‘You Choose’ event
will be held towards the end
of the year.

Customer Involvement
Youth
Conference
Eastlands Homes has an annual Youth Conference
which enables us to get feedback from young
people (aged 6 – 19years) about the services we
provide and to find out if they have concerns
about their areas. The workshops for this year's
conference held in February at the Manchester
City Stadium were:
■ What do you like and dislike about the Street
or area you live in
■ What could you and your friends do to improve
the Street or Area you live in
■ What could Eastlands Homes do to make your
area a better place to live
■ In your opinion, what do adults in your area
think of young people If not good – what
could you do to change this
If you'd like to find out any of the feedback from
the Youth Conference please contact Bridget
Halliday on 0161 274 2156.
The evening ended with a quiz and the lucky
winners were: Morgan Hopkins (£100), Naomi
Macdonald (£25), Connor Gallagher (£25), Ellie
McDermott (£25) and Joe Fox (£25).
Planning for next year's conference will be
starting very soon so watch out for the date!
