combustion
misfire faults
Tech tip explaining some of the
causes and fault finding procedures
in diagnosing combustion misfires
Engine misfires and associated
fault codes stored in the ECU
memory can be a result of many
electrical and or mechanical
malfunctions.
For instance, a lean air-fuel
mixture due to excessive air leakage
of a faulty EGR valve, incorrect
output signal of a malfunctioning
air mass meter or insufficient or no
spark output from the ignition coil
pack are regularly experienced
faults.
However, engine mechanical
malfunctions resulting in engine
misfires can also result in some of
the above codes to be stored in the
ECU memory.
Diagnosis: Ensure you have
completed all fundamental and
preliminary checks.
For instance, check for intake
air leaks, manifold vacuum,
engine compression (it is
favourable to conduct a cylinder
leakage test to confirm engine
condition) and ensure hydraulic
cam followers are not
malfunctioning i.e. holding intake
or exhaust valves open.
AFI suggests that a fuel
pressure and flow test be
conducted and thoroughly check
any other possible causes that can
result in an engine misfire which
isn’t directly related to the engine
management system.
AFI dealers stock numerous
commonly replaced products for
the Holden Astra, including the
ignition coil assembly for TS
Z18XE and X18XE engines,
crankshaft position sensor for the
TS Z18XE and camshaft position
sensors, EGR valves and mass air
flow sensors.
Jump starters models BJC-2000/BJC-
4000 and models BJT-75/BJT-200
Durst is a leader in manufacturing jump starters for all types of cars, trucks and
heavy equipment to suit Australian conditions.
Whether you are in the cold of Kosciusko or the
harsh deserts of the outback, there is a Durst jump
starter to suit your needs.
The light and portable BJC-2000, a 12 volt
model, will start the family car with ease time and
time again.
It’s light and easy to operate, foolproof and
reliable.
The 2000 comes with its own Switchmode
charger so when not in use simply plug the charger
into the BJC-2000 and it’s ready for use at anytime.
Throw it into the boot to go and start the wife’s car
in the supermarket parking lot.
Bigger brother to the 2000 is the BJC-4000.
Again, it is light and portable and just as easy to
use, but this little monster will do both cars and light
trucks and for the more technical minded it is both
12 and 24 volt.
It is ideal for the family saloon, the light
commercial industry Hino, Isuzu, Hyundai or your
motor home or camper van.
Both the 2000 and the 4000 have all the safety
features, fuse protection, anti-spike protection, come
with their own Switchmode chargers for fully
automatic set and forget, reverse polarity warning
buzzer and LED warning indicators, long life and
maintenance free and will jump start vehicles with
dead flat batteries.
Both the 2000 and 4000 comply with all OH&S
regulations.
With all the safety features as in the 2000 and
4000 but much more grunt to do those heavy duty
jobs, Durst has the BJT-75 jump starter to suit
trucks, buses, bulldozer and earthmovers.
The very heavy duty 12 volt model has 785 CCA
(cold cranking amps).
It’s mobile, on
inflatable tyres, for
ease of use on any
surface or terrain,
with two metre
leads and heavy
duty alligator
clamps.
This model
starter is made for
the heavy duty
multiply 12 volt battery vehicles, is reliable, easy to
operate and comes with its own Switchmode charger
for set and forget.
It is ideal for the workshop yet mobile enough to
throw on the back of the ute to get that broken down
vehicle up and going in no time flat.
Now to the ‘Rocky Balboa’ of this group of jump
starters is the workhorse that will start just about
anything.
That’s why the industry including the State Transit
Authority use this to start their Government Buses at
all 11 Depots throughout Sydney.
With 1960CCA this model has the power yet is
portable enough to take out on the job, again with
inflatable tyres, strong steel powder coated cabinet
and all the whistles and bells to meet OH&S and the
Australian Standards requirements.
This unit can even be used as a mobile power
supply.
The units are designed by Australians to meet the
needs of the Australian market but are also exported
to more than 11 countries throughout the world.
